To the right was the most fun to can have with your clothes on! Of course taking about the best chicken wing contest ever at the Canadian Trucking Show at Headingley MB in July put on by Fionn MacCool’s on Regent Ave. West in Winnipeg MB. Serving up the great wings was of course the CTM Cover & Centerfold Fionn MacCool’s Gal Paige with Laura (pictured here bottom right) and manager Ryan (seen working hard, blue shirt left corner of the top right picture). Thank-you for the great event at the show Fionn MacCool’s and also setting up your tent and dunk tank for all to enjoy. Winners received gift cards and the rest of those who participated not only got to eat yummy wings by a $5 off coupon on thier next visit. I was happy to have the Fionn MacCool’s event at your Canadian Trucking Show this year under the Querel Trailer Event Tent as I am a regular customer there for my fish Friday and Tuesday Karaoke. Good food and great people. If you don’t live in Winnipeg and in a big truck, I would park in the Home Depot lot behind, I know I can fit a truck and trailer back there. Live in the peg, a no brainer, crossroads shopping centre, whip down and enjoy a treat anytime. They also have location across Canada and in airports.

Load Securement – Know Before You Go
In this era of heightened security due to various terrorism acts we are now required to have load securement devices, policies and procedures.
These requirements are meant as a deterrent in an attempt to dissuade the drug smugglers and human traffickers from gaining access to our loads. With the Dawn of the C-TPAT and FAST Programs; Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism and Free And Secure Trade, came the heightened security measures. PIP Partners In Protection, our own Canadian Program has been around since 1995, we were ahead of the rest of the world in our attempts to fight the battle against terrorism. Trucks are front and centre in the world of International Freight Transportation as we all are aware therefore the strictest load securement regulations have hit the Transportation Industry hard. We are not only required to lock our Tractor Cabs but also our Trailers, storage compartments trailer doors and in some cases even the cargo itself. Ocean and Air Freight have also been hit hard, Containers absolutely have to be secured with locking devices and seals to prevent and manipulation or tampering before during and after transport. Why is the government on both sides of the borders insisting on these heightened security measures? If you are like most of us, we hear everyday on the news about drug smuggling events, human trafficking events, bomb threats, heists, and drivers getting killed for their cargo, not to mention the accidents that happen within the transportation industry as well. These measures are for our safety as much as they are for security. The requirements for Trucks are as follows: you must have your loads secured at all times, your cab must be equipped with locks on all doors and when you are not in your cab you are required to keep all of the doors locked. You are required to turn off your truck when not on the road travelling, sitting idle is no longer allowed due to both security as well as the environmental concerns.
10
During domestic travel your trailer is required to be locked and sealed with either a padlock device or a bull dog style seal. During International transport you are required to Seal your trailers with a high security seal that meets the ISO PAS 17712:2010. If you are a CTPAT, FAST and PIP Certified Company you are aware of this fact and as you are also aware, if you, being driver and company, are caught without a Seal that meets this standard you will receive a warning,
second warning you will receive notice that if you are caught again without a Seal you will be removed from these programs by CBP and CBSA, there is no third strike as you are out. Just in case you are wondering, this applies to both sides of the Land Driven borders both Canada and the U.S.A., for International Sea travel these regulations apply to all Ocean port freight; these regulations also apply for International Air freight. Both U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Canada Border Services Agency have a complex mission for protecting our borders with a broad range of law enforcement authorities for screening all foreign visitors, returning citizens as well as all imported cargo that enters our countries at over 600 land, air and sea ports. In the aftermath of the terrorist’s attacks from 911 the U.S.A. began developing antiterrorism programs such as the FAST Free And Secure Trade program and the C-TPAT Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism. These programs along with the CSI Container Security Initiative, PIP Partners In Protection and the TTP Trusted Traders Program known both to Canada and the EU European Union; have put forth a fight against terrorism worldwide. CSI addresses maritime container security, with over 11 million maritime containers arriving in
o
North American ports, under the requirements there must be a 7 point inspection done prior to the loading of goods into the container and for load securement requiring containers to be Sealed with High Security Seals that meet or exceed the ISO PAS 17712:2010 standard. All containers are prescreened utilizing large-scale X-ray, gamma ray machines and radiation detection devices prior to departing all ports. Land borders cross over 11 million trucks and 2.7 million rail cars every year. All drivers and conductors are responsible for knowing what is inside of every tractor, trailer, container and rail car. With the implementation of such programs as the C-TPAT, PIP and FAST, heightened security measures protecting our borders that have become mandatory as in the regulations for locks and seals on all trailers, containers and rail cars are clearly making a giant step in the right direction. Having given all of this information regarding border protection, here is a listing of load securement devices as per requirements: 17-point inspections of conveyances must be conducted prior to all shipments. Stickers that State “SECURED” may be affixed to the contents in the trailer and to the goods that are stored in a Warehouse. LTL carriers must use a high-security padlock or similar locking device when operating domestically and must have strict controls limiting access to all keys or combinations. TL Carriers domestically must also utilize a high-security padlock or similar locking device such as a bulldog seal. For all International Border Crossing Trucks a High-Security Bolt Seal or Cable Seal that meets the ISO PAS 17712:2010 must be utilized.
Please be very aware that there are many “knock-offs” of these seals that claim to be C-TPAT Certified and/or ISO Certified which in fact are not; you need to be very careful of your source. For LTL consolidation, once the freight has been sorted and loaded, the trailer must be affixed with the high-security seal that meets the ISO PAS 17712:2010 standard. Container Security regulations, a high-security seal that meets the ISO PAS 17712:2010 standard must be used.

Note from Dave!
If you see suspicious activity, persons asking you for a ride across the border in your vehicle, a loose lipped driver talking about smuggling loads of weapons or drugs, do us all a big favour and contact authorities. Try to get as much information as possible without becoming involved and shut these bad guys down. They are bad for our business.

Eight things your neighbor probably doesn’t understand about professional drivers
By; Ellen Voie CAE, President/CEO Women in Trucking
The public perception of professional drivers has often been based on misunderstanding due to the media and movie industry’s portrayal of these hard working men and women. Although there are numerous image campaigns in the trucking industry, most of them focus on the importance of the industry itself instead of trying to change the image of the person behind the wheel. Your neighbor might not understand what your life is like as a professional driver and more importantly, how your job affects their lifestyle. Here are eight things your neighbor probably doesn’t know about you, but should. This list isn’t comprehensive and I’m sure you can think of many more things you’d like your friends to know about your career, but this is a start. #1. Driving a truck for a living is not an easy job. You can’t just hop into a tractor-trailer and take it out on the highway without extensive training. It’s not an unskilled job that just anyone can do. It takes time and effort to learn how to shift and how to turn corners and how to back into a dock. It’s not easy! #2. Being a professional driver isn’t just a job, it’s a lifestyle. When your neighbor goes to work each morning and returns home at night, his or her kids might not even know if their mom or dad changes jobs or careers because it doesn’t affect them in the same way it will affect the child of a professional driver. It was years before my daughter learned that some daddies were home every Wednesday! #3. Just because you are away from home a lot doesn’t mean you are unfaithful or that your marriage is in trouble. Your neighbor will judge your family situation based on their own. So, if they think you stay away because you’re unhappy, it’s their perception. Many folks still assume that you’re unfaithful because you travel often and have the opportunity to cheat on your spouse. Remind them that cheating relates to values, not time apart. #4. You can’t just make plans for a week from Thursday because you don’t know if you’ll be home or not. This one was always one of the most difficult aspects of the
14
trucking lifestyle to explain. No, I cannot RSVP to your daughter’s wedding next June, so it’s easier to decline the invitation. People just don’t understand how unpredictable your job can be when you’re delivering loads around the country. #5. Remember who is the professional! If I had the choice of driving alongside a family in an SUV in a snowstorm, or running alongside an eighteen-wheeler, I would chose the big rig. I just don’t trust non-commercial drivers as much as I do those professionals who are well trained and more observant. When people complain about big trucks sharing the highway, I remind them that the professional is the one who is more capable and trustworthy on the road than those drivers with less training. #6. Yes, trucks do own the road! Without trucks paying for the taxes that fund road projects, the highways wouldn’t be the same. From fuel taxes to IRS taxes, to tolls to mileage taxes, the trucking industry pays for the roads and their upkeep. Those four wheelers just don’t realize how little they pay, and don’t even think about how little those electric vehicles are paying for our roads! #7. If your neighbor only understood that your job keeps his kitchen stocked, his car’s tank filled, and his children clothed. He doesn’t always understand the supply chain and how you and your truck allow him to enjoy the products he uses every day. Maybe he needs a lesson in the importance of the trucking industry and its effect on the economy. #8. You’re not driving a truck until you find something better. For some, being a professional driver is the job of last resort, but for most of you, it’s your career. Sure, there are people who are always looking for something that pays better and allows you to have a different lifestyle, but not all drivers are seeking a way out. Feel free to show this article to your neighbor the next time you feel misunderstood. You just might change his or her opinion of you, one neighbor at a time. Women In Trucking Association, Inc. is a nonprofit association established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. Membership is not limited to women, as 16 percent of its members are men who support the mission.

By Marc Palud Xp3 Canada Xp3 is the Fuel Upgrader
X p 3
Every once in a while, we come across new technologies that improves our lifestyles, businesses and health. Getting access to new products & services capable of positive changes has always been an exciting part of life. The challenge consumers face in today's marketplace is finding products that stand out from the others, doing our research, then personally putting the product to the test. Xp3 is one of those new and important technologies that is making positive changes to owner operators and fleets all over the transportation industry.
Without Xp3 Treated Fuel
A 他 ton diesel truck that normally consumes 16 litres to travel 100 kilometers, assuming that the cost of diesel is at $1 per litre and the truck has a 100 litre tank. One tank will get 625 kilometers of distance travelled at a cost of $100 for the diesel for a per kilometer cost of 16 cents per km.
32
With Xp3 Enhanced Fuel
By being able to extract more energy out of the fuel, the same 他 ton diesel truck gains a minimum of 3% better fuel economy and now consumes 15.5 litres for every 100 kilometers travelled. Add $3 for the Xp3 fuel treatment, and the cost to travel 645 kilometers is $103, for a cost per kilometer travelled being at 16 cents per km. At a 3% improvement, Xp3 becomes a NET-ZERO cost product to use and all of the other benefits gained by using Xp3 are at NO COST. That $3 of Xp3 gained you 20 additional kilometers travelled providing you with an instant return on investment. If your vehicle nets better than a 3% improvement in fuel economy, then Xp3 becomes a profit generator providing you more value than it costs in kilometers travelled alone and all of the other benefits are still at NO COST. See one of our participating dealers for full details. For more information on Xp3, go to
www.Xp3Canada.com
or call
1-800-507-4107.
Canada is now starting to see more truck drivers and owner operators smiling and feeling better about their businesses after they experience first-hand benefits of the new Xp3 Fuel Enhancer.

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again. Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop. From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio. Blackjacks Roadhouse and Games Room is a brand new building been created to host Clarence’s latest vision, this outstanding and beautiful building features amazing truss work and a 2nd floor grand stage over- looking our room.
