Hey did you know where the Caesar Salad came from? Here is an interesting fact a driver can tell servers and friends on the road. The salad's creation is generally attributed to restaurateur Caesar Cardini, an Italian immigrant who operated restaurants in Mexico and the United States.Cardini was living in San Diego but also working in Tijuana where he avoided the restrictions of Prohibition. His daughter Rosa (1928–2003) recounted that her father invented the dish when a Fourth of July 1924 rush depleted the kitchen's supplies. Cardini made do with what he had, adding the dramatic flair of the table-side tossing "by the chef." With Prohibition, gangster and movie stars from California would come to the Caesar Hotel, Main Street Tijuana for forbidden drinks and the Caesar salad. Bugsy Seigel who opened the Flamingo in Las Vegas had the Caesar for the opening and hence it spread in Nevada and world wide. Pictured to the right I am sitting in the famous Caesar Hotel in Tijuana with a forbidden wobbly pop and getting ready for a famous Caesar salad.

US Does Away With Most Vehicle Inspection Reports Washington is eliminating the need to file the majority of inspection reports. Under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) No-Defect Driver-Vehicle Inspection Report rule, as of December 18 (2014), when a driver completes a pre- or posttrip inspection and finds no defects or safety problems, no paperwork will be required. According to US government figures, 95% of inspections typically fall under this category. “We are committed to improving efficiency so that drivers can stay focused on their safety and the safety of everyone they share the road with,” said FMCSA acting administrator Scott Darling. The FMCSA estimates that professional drivers spend approximately 46.7 million hours each year doing inspection paperwork. US transportation secretary Anthony Foxx offered some perspective about how much time report filing was costing truckers. “Until now, truck driver vehicle inspection reports were the 19th highest paperwork burden across all federal agencies. By scrapping the no-defect inspection reports, the burden is reduced to 79th, marking the most signifadded content
icant paperwork reduction achievement “ America’s truckers should be able to focus more on getting their goods safely to store shelves, constructions sites or wherever they need to be instead of spending countless hours on unnecessary paperwork that costs the industry nearly US$2 billion each year. This is a far better way to do business.”
Controversial US Hours-of-Service Reset Provisions Suspended for Two Years Two of the more contentious elements of the US hours-of-service regulations put into place in 2013 has been suspended for two years as part of an omnibus spending bill voted through last month. President Barack Obama must sign the bill and the FMCSA and states adopt the revisions before the changes go into effect. Once these formalities have been completed, drivers will no longer have to include two overnight periods of 1-5 a.m. during their 34-hour reset. They will also no longer be limited to one reset period per week. The American Trucking Associations, one of the most vocal critics of those aspects of the regulations, which it argues force drivers to end their reset when traffic tends to be busier, applauded the development. “We have known since the beginning that the federal government did
not properly evaluate the potential impacts of the changes it made in July 2013,” said ATA president and CEO Bill Graves. “Now, thanks to the hard work of Senator (Susan) Collins and many others, we have a common sense solution. Suspending these restrictions until all the proper research can be done is a reasonable step.”Sen. Collins tabled the amendments, which were part of a broader $1-trillion spending bill. The ATA in recent months has brought forward many reasons why the existing rules were flawed – and continued to do so after Congress and the Senate approved the bill. “One of our members told us several of his drivers took four days off for the recent Thanksgiving holiday, yet when they returned to work, their hours were limited because that 96-hour breakcould not count as a 34-hour restart,” Graves said. “That’s just one of the impacts FMCSA failed to research that we hope they fully examine as aresult of this congressional mandate.” “Fleets from around the country, including mine, tried to tell FMCSA that the previous rules were working just fine and that these new restart provisions were going to cause unintended problems,” added ATA chairman Duane Long, chairman of Longistics. “Those warnings went unheeded at the time, but we’re glad Senator Collins and others in Congress listened to us and that we’ll finally get a full examination of the potential impacts of these rules.
We call on President Obama to quickly sign this omnibus spending bill, which will immediately enact this suspension.” The restart provisions were opposed by both the ATA and the OwnerOperator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA). “Small business truckers know from personal experience that current restart restrictions compromise safety by forcing them onto the roads during the most congested and dangerous hours of morning traffic,” said OOIDA executive vice-president Todd Spencer. FTR said trucking productivity will immediately improve by 2% for the twoyear period during which the rules are suspended. This will noticeably affect truckload capacity utilization, FTR reported, giving the industry an important reserve of surge capacity to handle seasonal peaks and other issues. Price increases could moderate as a result, FTR indicated. “It is important to note that this change does not reduce the impending wave of regulatory drag still scheduled for late 2016 and beyond,” said Noel Perry, senior consultant and managing director, FTR. “Indeed it makes it worse, because the revised regs will hit just when a bunch of other regulatory changes appear as well. At that point, capacity will move above 100% and stay there for a year or more, unless the FMCSA doesn’t do what it says it will do, or if recession appears to blunt demand.” added content
Saskatchewan Amends Vehicle vehicle, taxi or farm vehicle in cases where the vehicle was Seizure Policy
Saskatchewan plans to crack down on drivers of commercial vehicles who commit “high-risk driving offences.” Changes to the province’s Traffic Safety Act will strengthen penalties for drivers while also making it less complicated for business owners to get their vehicles released. Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance Don McMorris said a new three-day licence suspension is being proposed for the driver of a commercial vehicle who commits highriskdriving offences such as: * cellphone use while driving (2nd offence within 12 months); * exceed speed limit by more than 50 km/hr (1st offence); * fail to stop for a peace officer (1st offence); * exceed speed limit by more than double the speed (2nd offence within 12 months); and * driving without due care or reasonable consideration (3rd and subsequent offence within 12 months). Supporting regulations are also being put in place to provide an appeal process for early release of a commercial added content
seized due to the driving behaviour of the employee. The following conditions must be met before the vehicle will be released: * the driver (employee) at the time of the offence is not the owner of the vehicle; * the owner can produce evidence that they have a written and communicated safety plan in place; and * the owner had obtained a driver’s abstract within the previous 12 months for their employee. Regulation changes are expected to take effect early January 2015. These changes will apply only to commercial vehicle seizures due to the driving behaviour of an employee. They will not apply to personal-use vehicles, for example when someone loans their vehicle to a friend or family member. In that situation, the usual grounds for appeal still stand. To apply for early release of a commercial r personal vehicle, the vehicle owner – be it a business or individual – may purchase an appeal receipt from any motor licence issuer for $100 eand call the Highway Traffic Board to book a telephone hearing.
Higher Distracted Driving Fines
Coming Into Effect in Nova Scotia Beginning Feb.1, Nova Scotians who use a hand-held device while driving will face increased fines and receive demerit points on their licence. “We take road safety seriously and distracted driving has become a very big issue in our province - as serious as impaired driving,” said Geoff MacLellan, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. “The bigger fines and addition of demerit points are an added incentive to put away your hand-held device while behind the wheel. We hope greater consequences will help influence driver behaviour.” “Texting and driving is a lethal combination, however this message is still not resonating with some drivers,” said Insp.
Bernadine Chapman, officer in charge of RCMP traffic services and member of the provincial Road Safety Advisory Committee. “As police, we see the devastating consequences of distracted driving and welcome anything that might deter someone from texting while behind the wheel. So please put your phones away when driving. It’s just not worth it.” Fine amounts will increase as follows: -- 1st offence, fines increase from $176.45 to $233.95 -- 2nd offence, fines increase from $233.95 to $348.95 -- 3rd offence, fines increase from $348.95 to $578.95 The increased fines and new demerit points mean Nova Scotia will have some of the strongest penalties in the country for using hand-held devices while driving. Detroit/Windsor Border Alert
The Detroit/Windsor Border has been targeted for e x t r a screening, please ensure you have the proper documentation in order including proper authorities numbers i.e.: MC, DOT, SCAC, CVOR. It has been discovered by CBP (U.S. Customs & Border Protection) that some persons and/or companies have been using others’ authorities illegally. This will cause and is currently causing back up border delays, forced turnarounds and even risking possible suspension from the C-TPAT, FAST and PIP Programs. Also you should be aware that once CBP knows and puts forth a charge or suspension or forced turnaround, CBSA is advised, hence you would now have trouble getting back across the Canadian Borders. I should also point out that ACE Manifests are Mandatory and it is imperative that they be filled out in their entirety and accurately or you will be forced to be turned around at the border point entering the U.S.A. ACI for Canada’s borders has been put into place but it’s still a relatively new program so we are still operating a grace period. A misconception regarding compliance programs such as the C-TPAT, if a company belongs to the C-TPAT program that the said com-

pany does not have to belong also to the PIP program; this is incorrect, you must belong to both programs if you are going to do either. Also please be aware that you must be truthful in the information that you put forth to both the U.S. CBP and the Canada’s CBSA; you will be Audited by U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and/or Central Intelligence Canada. It has recently come to my attention that there are persons and/or companies selling “Binders” full of documents claiming that these will get you through the C-TPAT and PIP Programs, be aware that this is FALSE information and further that both CBP and CBSA Officers are aware of this fictitious ongoings and they will be easily identified by both.
Be reminded that what you are presenting is your company and be aware that whom you are presenting this to is both the U.S. Dept. Homeland Security and the Canadian Central Intelligence. Of course I encourage anyone wanting to gain their authorities as in the MC licensing, DOT, SCAC, etc. as well as the Anti Terrorism initiative programs C-TPAT, PIP, FAST, CSA, to contact me and I will happily guide you through the appropriate steps but whom ever you contact please be sure you know exactly what you are getting and whom you are getting it from. Werner approached her about doing a training video for the company. While shooting the video, she was introduced to Jim Morbach, a retired military veteran with more than 21 years of military experience and Werner’s senior director of Student & Government Recruiting. With Werner consistently recognized by G.I. Jobs as a Top Military Employer and Top Military Spouse Friendly Employer, this was not surprising. However, for Berggren, what became of that meeting was surprising. She received the news that she was selected to drive a Freedom truck with Operation Free-
As a woman, she admittedly had reservations at first. However, she had the support of family and friends, which made the difference for her. She does take added precautions to ensure safety. For example, if the load permits, she starts her day around 4-5 a.m. so that when she is finished for the day the truck stops are still fairly empty and she can get a good spot close to the front of the parking lot in a welllit area. She makes sure to finish up inside the facility before it gets dark and sticks to a strict sleep schedule to guarantee she is well rested for the next day’s work. If a load requires her to start her day while it is still dark outside, she moves her truck to a well-lit area with security cameras to perform her pre-trip. “My testimony to other women is that they do not need to be afraid of truck driving,” Berggren said. Women In Trucking was established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. Students have the chance to see first-hand the type of truck (aside from the military wrap) that they will receive as a Werner professional driver. “I want to show that women can do this job. Although the small livestock producers were the first key customer of AlumLine, the company has diversified and has entered other areas of the marketplace. Some of those areas include emergency and rescue bodies, auto trailers, contractor bodies and all types of tool boxes. With their ability to customize, the product can be personalized to the customer's wants and needs.trailers is now part of the product line.

Marc Springer talks about Alum-line I bought it from a great guy and owner operator in Livingston, Montana. It was affordable and in great condition from the previous two owners. Now I had a real rig to get this party started, and that is exactly what I did. Anyway thats not the point of this story. The point is Now after 6 years on the road and 100's of thousands of miles, I was able to buy another Alum-line trailer to replace the original and as a bonus I have been able to get the Dodge into top shape. BD Diesel in Abbotsford, BC, Canada and Herd Bumpers, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada along with Jonnasson Motorsports have done some outstanding work. Thank you to them.
Now Alumline has has built and installed a custom Bed which completes this build ( for now ) and it's time to put this awesome outfit back to making me some cash. I must say that without the TV show Shipping Wars it would not have been as easy to get all this accomplished. As some of know not all the loads they do on the show require a Class 8 rig. I now have all angles covered. I also plan to haul my 1976 CJ5 Renegade Levis edition around on this trailer as well as the 1966 GMC Suburban for the Waterfowl Evolution show. Both of these vehicles will be on tour through the summer months if you get a chance to see them I encourage you do stop and take a look. Both are being built as we speak and are going to be awesome.

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again. Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop. From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio. Blackjacks Roadhouse and Games Room is a brand new building been created to host Clarence’s latest vision, this outstanding and beautiful building features amazing truss work and a 2nd floor grand stage over- looking our room.
