What a fast year with so many twists and turns. I am thinking the best was our Christmas present when the new rules were given a toss. I was not please with that it was so obvious most of them were made by someone that has never driven or consulted anyone that had driven or maybe even seen a truck before. Probally takes a bus to work. Many Transport Drivers lost miles sitting with that 2 to 6 rule I call it, as if you unload in the morning of a start to a reset, you can’t turn a wheel for up to 48 hours.... GONZO !!! Sitting up to 48 hours, most times away from your home base. I call it home base because most of us have created a home on the road.
Talk a little bit here about our HOME on the road because the Holiday Season where some of us work, those favorite stops with those great people there that are our family on the road, who too are working, make the cold days and hard driving so much easier to swallow. I know I look forward to my favorite stops and the people I know there and the short but valuable time I spend with them, awesome. You may not have been there for 2 months but it feels like home and just yesterday. But I do know some of these stops are getting far and few between as the great servers are getting up there and retiring where some of us road rangers will go till they prey our cold dead hands off the wheel. It was awesome to see a load of you between Christmas and New Years at my favorite USA stops like the Gastrax and Stamart as well as the Headingley & Regina Huskys not to forget Lloyd.
I enjoy delivering CTM on the road each month and getting your valuable feedback to grow our Transport Magazine. It is for you, built for you to pick-up read and keep, with the best entertainment.
I like to say again thanks for reading CTM and I look forward to hearing from you, than about you. Be safe my friends! Happy Trails, Happy 2015.....
Dave

By Dawn Truell ~ CBS ~ Make Sure You Do Your 17 pt. spections Or Spend The Next 25 Years In The Federal P
Truck drivers please hear this; you absolutely Must do your 17point inspections as well as your standard walk around safety check for your logs. The amount of drug smuggling that is targeting the trucking industry skyrockets daily. If you are stopped for secondary screening and any drugs, drug paraphernalia, alcohol, tobacco, excessive amounts of cash or weapons be prepared to be hand cuffed and taken away immediately! Customs and Border Protection on both sides of the borders: Canada and USA, their rulings are far different from that of the police as in "guilty until proven innocent" whereas with the police it’s "innocent until proven guilty". The reason for the importance of the 17 point inspections, completed, signed and dated, is that should this happen to you, this simple piece of paper can help to save your butts! Prior to every load take the necessary extra 5 minutes to complete your 17-point inspections, carry them in your truck with you with your trip information. If anything is found in your tractor or trailer you can honestly say that upon your inspection those items were not present. Every border has hundreds of drug busts everyday bringing a very bad name to the trucking industry. Unfortunately the first go to for "who did it" is always the truck driver. The drug lords of the world know this fact and prey on truck drivers. Here are some things for you to look out for: If someone whom you don't know approaches you offering a free ticket to a hockey game, a gift certificate for a free dinner at an expensive restaurant, beware! This is a way for the drug smugglers to test your willingness to take a bribe; now they know that you will they will approach you with the temptation of $1,000 per kilo of cocaine for example, once you've agreed even just one time, they now have you in the palm of their hands and will continue to use you for drug trafficking.
10
Should you choose to say yes be aware that drug smuggling is a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment. Saying No is the obvious choice, be careful as they may threaten you, your possessions or most unfortunately your family. These drug people have so many sources its scary, they can and will find out anything that they can about you to use for their threatening tactics. What you should do if you are ever approached for drug trafficking: if you are able to without harm coming to you or your loved ones, call 911, police, if you are southbound into the US contact CBP at 1-800-BEALERT, northbound into Canada call CBSA 1-888-502-9060. If possible, dial 911 and drop your phone on the floor of your cab, state carefully that you are in trouble and if possible give a brief explanation of what's going on, leave your phone on so that the police can track you and so that they can hear what is going on for your safety.
The first call is always to save you. InIf you ever notice a vehicle has been followPen! ing you for quite a long time, call 911 or po-
lice, report as much information as you can, description of vehicle, colour, make, model, license plate if you can see it and if you can see the driver, give as much detail as you can about this driver as well. In the drug world these followers are called "wolves", they are following you until you cross the border or until you reach your destination, once you are out of the truck they will come to grab the drugs that they have stashed on/in your truck.
I wanted to take a moment to remember Mr. Paul M. Davison who passed away in October this year; Paul was an influential member of the transportation industry who will sorely be missed, God Bless.

Regarding the rulings for carrying alcohol, when in a commercial truck you are not allowed to carry alcohol. Regarding the rulings for carrying tobacco, you may carry only enough cigarettes for personal consumption; Customs will check your trip distance. In conclusion I hope that you can see the importance of conducting your 17 pt. inspection prior to every trip to ensure that no contraband has been hidden on or in your tractor-trailer.
Note from Dave!
If you see suspicious activity, persons asking you for a ride across the border in your vehicle, a loose lipped driver talking about smuggling loads of weapons or drugs, do us all a big favour and contact authorities. Try to get as much information as possible without becoming involved and shut these bad guys down. They are bad for our business.

Hitting the road with The Road Hammers
38
The Road Hammers – Jason McCoy, Clayton Bellamy and Chris Byrne – are no strangers to the freedom that life on the road brings. Since 2004 the award-winning grouphas been crafting boot-thumping, infectious tunes that meld country rock and southern blues with a “Hammerized” spin. Striking a chord with anyone who feels at home behind the wheel with the road stretched out ahead of them,Wheels(Open Road Recordings),the bands fourth studio album, captures the craved experience of the unexpected adventure found when going off the beaten track. Says Byrne, “Being on the road is how we’ve made a living for years. There’s definitely a certain freedom to it, and Wheels is the soundtrack to that feeling.” Spending countless hours on the road since the band was first launched,The Road Hammers took a well-deserved hiatus in 2010. Announcing their reunion, in the fall of 2013, and their brand new song “Get On Down The Road”, the band exploded back onto the country music scene. Continuing to ride the success from their first single, thesecond single off of the new album, “Mud”, became GOLD-certified.Huge fans of the Geoff Mack classic,“I’ve Been Everywhere”, the group released their version of the track, which perfectly captures the frenzied energy of the original while highlighting their trademark harmonies.
“The album’s called Wheels for a reason,” says Jason McCoy (vocals/guitar). We didn’t want to write a song just about trucking, but about 4x4’s, four-wheeling, dirt biking, you name it, and “Mud” is an extension of that.” The Road Hammers, a truly legendary Canadian country music band, burst onto the scene when their self-titled debut album hit No. 1 on the Canadian Country Album Charts in 2005 and was eventually certified Platinum. It was from the success of their debut album, which garnered the band multiple awards and nominations, including the 2005 and 2006 CCMA Award for Group or Duo of the Year and the 2005 JUNO for Country Recording of the Year. Since their early success, the band has worked with legends like LynyrdSkynyrd, Roy Clark, and most recently with Frank Turner of Bachman-Turner Overdrive on Wheels. “Getting into this project after taking time away was about getting back to the heart of what The Road Hammers were made to do,” Bellamy says. If the immense success of Wheels is any indication of where the band is headed, then it’s safe to say that The Road Hammers will continue to appeal to listeners who aren’t just in it for the short ride – but the long haul. The Road Hammers are currently on tourwith label mates Doc Walker and Blackjack Billy during the Bands on the Run Tour from November 20 to December 15, 2014.

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again. Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop. From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio. Blackjacks Roadhouse and Games Room is a brand new building been created to host Clarence’s latest vision, this outstanding and beautiful building features amazing truss work and a 2nd floor grand stage over- looking our room. They boast the best buffet in the area, as well as a great Canadian & Chinese cuisine menu. Our games room is furnished with 25 V.L.T.s, 5 Minute Keno, Sports Select. Watch and play all the sports from our comfortable lounge. Trucker Friendly Please come by anytime and enjoy our menu and great service. Open 24 hours a day featuring specials daily.
