I have to say I don’t know what they were thinking putting DEF in North American Trucks. On this rounder I faced temps -60 and more and froze up my DEF. I had to do a parked regen to get moving and I tell you driving and seeing first the DEF light and then it flashing and waiting for that RED is very uncomfortable. I hear across the pond they are now getting rid of it and here we are starting it. Go Figure. 80% water?? Back to MATS, you can find MADDY signing at the Xp3 booth, 60148 and 4 State Trucks @ booth 14228 and I will be at my friends at 68044. Hope to see you all there to. Querel Trailers does it again 2 years in a row!

8

Querel Trailers has another plaque to add to the many they already have on thier wall. Etnyre was on hand to shake hands with Bruce Querel & present Bruce and Richard Wiebe with thier well deserved award. This is a CTM favorite as Bruce has put an article in CTM in the past and more in the future I hope as he is in my opinion the trailer expert. Not only how they are built and what is junk and what not, but what you can legally use and what you should be using. Querel Trailers has been providing contractors, road builders, forestry professionals and long haulers with quality new and used semi-trailers for over seven years. With +35 years trailer sales experience behind it, Querel Trailers has the industry expertise needed to ensure its customers get top-quality products at reasonable prices. Querel's Trailers has a large inventory to choose from. The company stocks 50, 55 and 60 tonne lowbeds, C/W Jeeps and boosters, tandem steel and aluminum end dumps with box liners, tri-axle steel and aluminum end dumps and mechanical detaches. Through its manufacturers, the company has a wide range of pulp trailers including tandems, tri-axles and super Bs. Querel also has storage trailers and storage containers for sale. Querel is based in Manitoba, but can and does provide service across the country thanks to unrestricted territorial agreements with manufacturers. By Dawn Truell ~ CBS ~ Truck Cargo – Canada & U.S.A.

As part of the Beyond the Border Action Plan, CBSA Canada Border Services Agency and DHS U.S. Department of Homeland Security have officially launched Phase 11 of the pre-inspection pilot for truck cargo, this takes place at the Peace Bridge both sides between Fort Erie and Buffalo. Both Western New York and Southern Ontario are very excited that this Phase 11 was sited at the Peace Bridge border; this will ease border traffic congestion, as well as make Secure Safe Passage. The pre-inspection process comprises radiation screening as well as basic primary processing; this does not however eliminate secondary screening should this be necessary based on the pre-inspection discoveries. This plan was released by Prime Minister Harper and President Obama in 2011 but didn’t actually go into effect until Spring 2013. This Beyond the Border plan was created to increase security and expedite cross border commercial traffic . Phase 1 of this pilot project began at the Pacific Highway Crossing in Surrey, British Columbia – Blaine, Washington, and has proven to be successful. Of course we do also have the heightened security efforts of the programs that are also joint initiatives between Canada – PIP – Partners In Protection and U.S.A. – C-TPAT – Customs Trade Partnership Against. PIP was created in 1995 by our Canadian government with its primary focus on promoting business awareness and compliance with customs regulations. After the events of 9/11, the PIP program's focus shifted to place a greater emphasis on trade chain security. C-TPAT became a program to help protect The United States of America after the horrific act of terrorism on September 11, 2001, combating the threat of terrorism became CBP’s number one priority.

10

I joined forces in the fight against terrorism subsequently creating Cross Border Services and focusing primarily on the CTPAT, PIP, FAST and CSA programs.

In creating CBS my aim was to educate our noble amongst us, which the majority of us are. I strongly believe in doing everything that we possibly can to fight against these deplorable beings such as drug smugglers, murderers, human traffickers, terrorists. The following are some recent cases that I will share with you depicting some of the very reasons why I have set out on this crusade. Recently at the Cascade, BC/ Laurier, WA border crossing, a resident of our beautiful Kelowna, BC, Robert William Nicholson, was found in possession of three stun guns, four canisters of pepper spray and numerous batons in his vehicle. These are all considered prohibited weapons. In February 2014, B.C. Provincial Court sentenced him to five-year weapons possession prohibition, $1500 + $200 fines for smuggling, possession of restricted weapons and victims surcharge. On March 5, 2014, reported in the London Free Press, a violation of the right to a trial within reasonable time unfortunately ended a $6 million, fouryear cocaine trafficking charge case that was ongoing against two Toronto men aged 30 and 31, in Sarnia court. 47 kilograms in 39 bricks of cocaine packed in two boxes were found in their tractor-trailer after a border crossing security scan at the Blue Water Bridge. Superior Court Justice Joseph Donohue stated: "A world war can be fought and won in four years . . . This has gone on too long." The main reason for the trial delay was due to a lack of a proper interpreter.

February 20, 2014, 2.6 kg of heroin was discovered in a suitcase of a passenger named Mohamed Mubaraka, 23. He was on a flight from Belgium to Montreal. Once Mohamed claimed his suitcase and proceeded through the CATSA (Canadian Air Transport Security Authority) at the Montreal International Airport, CBSA officers examined his suitcase and discovered a false bottom, x-rays revealed a mass in the bottom, you guessed it, this mass contained the heroin. RCMP charged Mohamed with importing a controlled substance. He will be facing prison time and severe fines. February 28, 2014, CBSA reported it had intercepted $1.7 million in fraudulent cheques found in a courier packaged that was headed to a residential address in Edmonton, AB. The package had originated in Africa and the declaration of contents stated documents. This is the largest interception of counterfeit monies in the Province of Alberta. In Steinbach, MB on January 3, 2014, a semi-trailer was pulled over by the RCMP; 114 pounds of Cannabis Marihuana was uncovered in the trailer. Two men were arrested and charged with drug trafficking, John Millen, 48 from BC and John Shannon, 51 from AB. This truck was destined for the East Coast of Canada. Recently a Toronto area trucker tried to have the evidence, 69 kilograms of cocaine, at his trial excluded, citing that it fell against his constitutional rights. Baldev Singh, 45 had been arrested at the Ambassador Bridge for possession and importation of cocaine. The Superior Court Justice Renee Pomerance ruled first week in March that Singh’s rights were not violated, the cocaine found in his truck cab was “properly admitted as evidence”. Singh had been carrying a load of oranges from California; he was the sole operator of this truck. The trucking company that owns the truck is East West Trucking Inc. of Mississauga, ON for which Singh was employed as a truck driver. A failed attempt at disguising the scent of the cocaine with oranges.

Cigarettes from China? As reported in the Windsor Star and shared with me by Ron Flowers, Intelligence Officer:

On February 12, 2014, CBSA officers at the Vancouver container exam area detected 2,700 cartons of cigarettes hidden inside a container filled with doors. The RCMP and CBSA arrested two Toronto area men ages 21 & 22. The cigarettes originated from China routing through Vancouver and on to Montreal and Toronto. They were charged with “receiving for sale improperly packaged and stamped tobacco products, and breach of probation.” (R. Flowers) They both were released on a $5,000 surety bond. Contraband tobacco is illegal.

Note from Dave!

If you see suspicious activity, persons asking you for a ride across the border in your vehicle, a loose lipped driver talking about smuggling loads of weapons or drugs, do us all a big favour and contact authorities. Try to get as much information as possible without becoming involved and shut these bad guys down. They are bad for our business.

Eight things your neighbor probably doesn’t understand about Professional Drivers by Ellen Voie CAE,President/CEO Women in Trucking

The public perception of professional drivers has often been based on misunderstanding due to the media and movie industry’s portrayal of these hard working men and women. Although there are numerous image campaigns in the trucking industry, most of them focus on the importance of the industry itself instead of trying to change the image of the person behind the wheel. Your neighbor might not understand what your life is like as a professional driver and more importantly, how your job affects their lifestyle. Here are eight things your neighbor probably doesn’t know about you, but should. This list isn’t comprehensive and I’m sure you can think of many more things you’d like your friends to know about your career, but this is a start.

#1. Driving a truck for a living is not an easy job. You can’t just hop into a tractor-trailer and take it out on the highway without extensive training. It’s not an unskilled job that just anyone can do. It takes time and effort to learn how to shift and how to turn corners and how to back into a dock. It’s not easy!

14

#2. Being a professional driver isn’t just a job, it’s a lifestyle. When your neighbor goes to work each morning and returns home at night, his or her kids might not even know if their mom or dad changes jobs or careers because it doesn’t affect them in the same way it will affect the child of a professional driver. It was years before my daughter learned that some daddies were home every Wednesday!

#3. Just because you are away from home a lot doesn’t mean you are unfaithful or that your marriage is in trouble. Your neighbor will judge your family situation based on their own. So, if they think you stay away because you’re unhappy, it’s their perception. Many folks still assume that you’re unfaithful because you travel often and have the opportunity to cheat on your spouse. Remind them that cheating relates to values, not time apart.

#4. You can’t just make plans for a week from Thursday because you don’t know if you’ll be home or not. This one was always one of the most difficult aspects of the trucking lifestyle to explain. No, I cannot RSVP to your daughter’s wedding next June, so it’s easier to decline the invitation. People just don’t understand how unpredictable your job can be when you’re delivering loads around the country.

#5. Remember who is the professional! If I had the choice of driving alongside a family in an SUV in a snowstorm, or running alongside an eighteen-wheeler, I would chose the big rig. I just don’t trust non-commercial drivers as much as I do those professionals who are well trained and more observant. When people complain about big trucks sharing the highway, I remind them that the professional is the one who is more capable and trustworthy on the road than those drivers with less training.

#6. Yes, trucks do own the road! Without trucks paying for the taxes that fund road projects, the highways wouldn’t be the same. From fuel taxes to IRS taxes, to tolls to mileage taxes, the trucking industry pays for the roads and their upkeep. Those four wheelers just don’t realize how little they pay, and don’t even think about how little those electric vehicles are paying for our roads!

#7. If your neighbor only understood that your job keeps his kitchen stocked, his car’s tank filled, and his children clothed. He doesn’t always understand the supply chain and how you and your truck allow him to enjoy the products he uses every day. Maybe he needs a lesson in the importance of the trucking industry and its effect on the economy.

Feel free to show this article to your neighbor the next time you feel misunderstood. You just might change his or her opinion of you, one neighbor at a time.

#8. You’re not driving a truck until you find something better. For some, being a professional driver is the job of last resort, but for most of you, it’s your career. Five years ago the Women In Trucking Association kicked off the first annual “Salute to Women Behind the Wheel.” The goal then, which continues now, was to honor the women who travel the highways as a career. Whether she drives an 18-wheeler or a bus full of children (or tourists), the reason for the Salute is to honor the women who have professional licenses and earn a living while driving. On Saturday, March 29 at 11 am, the celebration will begin in rooms C201-204 (South Wing) at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville. She will stop at Nashville TA/Petro along the way and have lunch with her drivers before heading to the Mid-America Trucking Show. In addition to honoring female drivers, Women In Trucking will be announcing its first, “Best Recruiting Ad” contest winner, sponsored by Arrow Truck Sales. The contest resulted in three finalists, Prime Inc, Republic Services, and Walmart, whose ads were chosen as the best by driver consensus. The winner will be announced at the Salute.
