Front Cover this month has a lot to talk about. There stands my friend Howard McAfee, a world class driver and proven Manitoba and National Truck Driving Champion. Always great to see a strong supporter of CTM win, and win he did, a HERD on his Pete and a jockey box full of Xp3 and Prolong Super Lubricants. Howard has already seen awesome results as I have with Xp3 and now everything that moves on his truck is lubricated with Prolong from my friend Bob Pellack who knows trucking. Bob has a shop in Winnipeg MB, but can get you this product anywhere. His contact info is on page 38. The Xp3 has a write up on page 32 inside and if you follow CTM you know the amazing results from Xp3. I don’t praise these products because I am paid too. I bring these products to your attention so you can save fuel dollars and maintenence or if you are a company driver can bring it to the attention of your maintenence director. Nothing I like better than hearing positive results on the road
I have been on the road this month all across Canada and down into the USA. Roads and weather have not been to kind for sure. I spent the slowest drive from Regina SK to AB I ever have with top speeds of 30 or 40 MPH. But figured drive slow and careful and get there as I was not ready to sit around yet. Did I say SK, I think you understand. Ha ha But the most important thing is seeing the fan base on the road and getting your suggestions on how to build our magazine CTM, together. Did you know CTM now has over 13,000 fans on facebook and our digital magazine has hit over 90,000 readers ! Thank-you ! See more in the digital magazine and the next few pages, digital dose not limit the amount of good stuff we can provide you! Read On !!!!!

On Page 3 bottom right corner did you notice the Jabra Stealth smartphone voice control Go to the Web Edition and enter to win one with details in the full page Ad. I have used one on the last rounders and with the Siri, it is the best ear bud I have ever seen. Have you seen Jenessa from the Dog in Regina? I was lucky enough to be served by Val the Truckers page in the crossword this month and met Jenessa who “might” be in the upcoming editions as our newest CTM gal. Thanks Jenessa. On the right side Top I was sitting in Trukkers with Chucky in Red Cliff AB and the picture taker just caught the working side of Leisa one of the very Best. Good food and Great people. Most of our serving family at our stops are great people, so if you can, tip heavy and thank them for being there for us. They give us that welcome smile after a long hard day on the road and something hot for our belly. So speaking of Chucky there in the top right picture, CTM is starting a NEW CONTEST, “Where’s Waldo”, but “Where’s Chucky”, where you the readers can win more great prizes from Canadian Trucking Magazine and our supporting advertisers.
4
So watch for Chucky on the road in his Caravan Transport Truck a 2013 white Volvo 1324MH, and when you see Chucky, go up, get a picture with him and Win. All kinds of great swag will be announced in the february Edition and on the face book page. Same goes for your Celebrity Publisher Edition, yours truly Dave MacKENZIE so you have 2 chances to win anywhere in NA.
Just another way at CTM we like to thank you for your readership and input into your Transport magazine, built for you with entertainment and articles so it is picked up, read and kept. Spread the word and do a friend a favour and give them a copy and share the CTM facebook page, if you facebook to all your friend. By the time you read this you should be making plans for MATS, Fergus and of course ours July 18th and for great times and great stories. At the Canadian Trucking Show held in MB at the Headingley Husky, we make it a family show. One you can be proud to invite your friends and family to, even the little ones. It has Trucks, Cars and Bikes and bounces, face painting and games for little ones and all ages.
Being I am someone that has spent years on the road, over 42 in one capacity or another, mostly professional driving, using my time off to see trucks is a draw but not a weekend draw, But having live bands, Cars, Bikes, prizes and other Entertainment is a good time every time! See you there. Please join me in that. I enjoy delivering CTM on the road each month and getting your valuable feedback to grow our Transport Magazine.

Querel Trailers has the Xp3 you all have been looking for. Pictured above, Bruce Querel, at Querel Trailers with the new Xp3 stand. His experience in this industry and testing Xp3 told him this is a product to stand behind and offer to his customers. There’s a new Vigilante in town
Anti Terrorism is an issue that we all s h o u l d know at least a little bit about. There are Anti Terrorism Programs out there such as the ones that most of you know by now I represent like C-TPAT, PIP, FAST, yet everyday there are more and more terror attacks that should alert our keen senses to pay attention. There is a new guy on the block aiding in the fight against terrorism you may not have heard of yet, he is called “The Jester”. Although he has been at this for five years now not many of us have heard of him. He’s a modern day vigilante of the Internet. Jester, a former U.S. soldier and a computer security expert, is working on his own to aid in the fight against terrorism, he has become somewhat of a celebrity with 58,000 followers on Twitter and has personally taken down 179 terrorist websites to date. While not having any official authorization to do this, Jester has many contacts in U.S. intelligence agencies. The Jester has managed to take down dozens of websites that support jihadist disinformation and recruitment. He is known on Twitter as @th3j35t3r:
10
Jester has used his computer hacking skills to shut down any website that he considers to be a threat to North America. A few examples: on June 18, 2014 he sent a public message on his Twitter account to GloboTech Communications in eastern Canada that they were hosting a website that was providing information to ISIS terrorists in which he clearly identified the exact computer server involved. At specifically 9:19 p.m., he sent another message with what he calls his signature threats: “I respectfully urge u to review my last 2 tweets. U should take action, or if you prefer, I can. #30mins#TickTock#.
Just minutes after this message was received the jihadist website was shut down. When Jester heard about the attacks at Charlie Hebdo he hacked into The Global Islamic Media Front, a jihadist website that teaches terrorists how to communicate privately, Jester quickly disfigured the website aiming to shut it down.
Obviously Jester knows what he is doing and the scare tactics he is utilizing are working with positive results. Whether we choose to look at Jester as a patriotic hacker or as a man on some sort of personal vengeance, he is helping in the fight against terrorism, which we can all respect. There is no excuse for people in this world to be killing fellow human beings. Hats off to you Jester! For information regarding anything mentioned in this article or information on the fight against smuggling, terrorism, CTPAT, FAST, PIP please contact Dawn Truell Cross Border Services 905-973-9136 dawntruell@gmail.com www.crossborderservices.org www.c-tpat-certified.com.
Over Christmas 2014, Jester managed to take down a website of PlayStation and Xbox Live network hackers called Lizard Squad who had affected more than 150 million lives by imposing disorder on popular gaming networks such as Battle.net, League of Legends and even managed to make a bomb threat on Twitter that resulted in the diversion of an American Airlines flight that Note from Dave! was carrying a Sony executive. If you see suspicious activity, persons asking you for a ride across the border in your vehicle, a loose lipped driver talking about smuggling loads of weapons or drugs, do us all a big favour and contact authorities. Try to get as much information as possible without becoming involved and shut these bad guys down. They are bad for our business.

Women in Trucking Association Names Diann Shook as January Member of the Month. By; Ellen Voie CAE, President/CEO Women in Trucking
Women in Trucking (WIT) Association has named J.B. Hunt driver, Dianne Shook as January 2015 Member of the Month. Shook recently had the opportunity to deliver $1,000 worth of school supplies to her grandchildren’s school as part of J.B. Hunt’s Adopt-a-Class program. She was one of ten drivers across the country to be selected for the program, and she was the only woman to participate. The program allows drivers to nominate their child’s classroom and, if selected, they personally deliver the gifts to the children’s classroom, complete with a pizza party, truck tour, and J.B. Hunt t-shirts. “It was the most awesome experience in all my years,” Shook said. “Just to see those teachers, kids, and parents, I was just so excited for them. It was like Christmas for the kids.” Seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces reassured Shook that she was driving for the right company, she said. Shook said she was initially drawn to J.B. Hunt because she knew she could find more miles with the company.
14
Additionally, she knew the company had a history of driver retention, and that she wanted to be a part of it. While on the road, she talked with J.B. Hunt drivers who had been driving with the company for their entire career. “They couldn’t compare J.B. Hunt to any other company because they’d always been there,” she said. “I applied off Facebook and, boom, here I am!” Prior to her career as a driver, Shook made a living as a nurse. It wasn’t until after her husband passed away that she knew she had to follow her dream, though. “My dad is a retired driver,” she said. “And, I’ve always wanted to drive trucks.” Shook hasn’t regretted her decision to join the trucking industry. “I love what I do, still today,” she said.
ne
“I learn something new every day and that’s what I told the kids.” Shook’s parents have always been supportive and encouraging. When she made the transition from her career as a nurse to a driver, her dad was there to offer advice. Shook recalled a particularly memorable moment when she told her father that she was having difficulties backing her truck during her first year driving.
For now, though, she hopes she simply inspired the children to follow their dreams, despite stereotypes. “This is so powerful in rural West Virginia,” she said. “Education is powerful and no one can take that from them. The world is changing and we have to change with it.” Women In Trucking was established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. Membership is not limited to women, as sixteen percent of its members are men who support the mission. For more information visit;
www.womenintrucking.org or call 888-464-9482 Ellen Voie CAE, President/CEO
Note from Dave~~ If you are a women in trucking support those who support you, call WIT today.
He told her, “That truck will go backward just as well as it will go forward,” she said, laughing. Shook credits her attraction to the trucking industry partly to her father, and partly to her simplicity. While Shook knows the kids enjoyed the Adopt-a-Class event, she acknowledged that it takes a lot for them to fully understand the industry. “When they get older, I’d like to do it Want More CTM ~ Visit the CTM again,” she said, “to let them know how much Expanded Web Edition @ coordination it takes to get stuff from place to www.canadiantruckingmagazine.ca place.” 15

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again. Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop. From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio. Blackjacks Roadhouse and Games Room is a brand new building been created to host Clarence’s latest vision, this outstanding and beautiful building features amazing truss work and a 2nd floor grand stage over- looking our room. They boast the best buffet in the area, as well as a great Canadian & Chinese cuisine menu. Our games room is furnished with 25 V.L.T.s, 5 Minute Keno, Sports Select. Watch and play all the sports from our comfortable lounge. Trucker Friendly Please come by anytime and enjoy our menu and great service. Open 24 hours a day featuring specials daily. Spend some time wandering around looking at one of the largest collection of oilfield, trucking and car racing memorabilia dating back some 100 + years.
