What an exciting month with the Canadian Trucking Show hitting Headingley, the Fergus Truck Show, reporting on the Truck Rodeo in MB and the nationals in Regina in September and most of all the great shows I have been on with Chrome and Steel Radio, combined with the opening of the new Beaver Truck Centre in Brandon MB and we have a Winner of the Magnum Bumper. Front cover of course Abbey & Carlie from the Fergus area were at the CTM booth to brighten things up and sing happy birthday on radio to Bruce Lacasse while recording the show for Chrome and Steel Radio. Download the app for TuneIn Radio, do a search for Chrome and Steel and listen to the loop as it plays everyday 24 hours a day. I listen to it 3 or 4 times to catch things I miss and play it at our CTM booth at the shows. The group is the centerfold this month and there is a great giveaway on the Expanded web Edition. Last week we had two of my young kids there on the radio answering questions about me, it was a hoot to hear. Not to leave out the gals......

Hey in the NASCAR is Arnie, I love this guy in his movies and I bet a lot of you did not know he is a NASCAR fan, supporter and has his lot of cars and hummers. So many pictures and information from the show it all had to go into the Web Edition. This 48 pager as readers know is always just a teaser with the tip of the iceberg with more entertainment in the 100+ pages of the Web edition. Always first out on our FaceBook Page. To the right is two of my favorite people enjoying the Canadian Trucking Show, my mom Inga Mackenzie and my youngest daughter Kaitlynne. So as you can see it was a blast for everyone who came out. The weather got nasty as in MB it does but the spirts were high and with the Querel Event Tent sponsored by Querel Trailers, Canuck Trailers & Keystone Western, we were high and dry and enjoyed 4 live bands and a chicken wing eating contest. To the right is Joanne from Trucking for a Cure who in Fergus put her name in for the MAGNUM Bumper and won! My son John was so excited, he drew the ballot, looked at it and went running. I wondered what the heck as I followed him right to the Trucking for a Cure booth were he handed the winning ballot to Joanne. Good things happen to good people and Joanne has been dedicating her time for years to great causes at the same time working as a full time freight relocator.Get out to one of the two convoys in ON coming at us soon, and listen to Joanne on Chrome and Steel Radio. To the right is the Gals from Fionn McCool’s Irish Pub in Winnipeg MB on Regent Ave. West. Paige on your left was at the Canadian Trucking Show running a wing eating contest that was a blast! Watch for Paige on the Cover of a upcoming CTM.

Load Securement – Know Before You Go

In this era of heightened security due to various terrorism acts we are now required to have load securement devices, policies and procedures.

These requirements are meant as a deterrent in an attempt to dissuade the drug smugglers and human traffickers from gaining access to our loads. With the Dawn of the C-TPAT and FAST Programs; Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism and Free And Secure Trade, came the heightened security measures. PIP Partners In Protection, our own Canadian Program has been around since 1995, we were ahead of the rest of the world in our attempts to fight the battle against terrorism. Trucks are front and centre in the world of International Freight Transportation as we all are aware therefore the strictest load securement regulations have hit the Transportation Industry hard. We are not only required to lock our Tractor Cabs but also our Trailers, storage compartments trailer doors and in some cases even the cargo itself. Ocean and Air Freight have also been hit hard, Containers absolutely have to be secured with locking devices and seals to prevent and manipulation or tampering before during and after transport. Why is the government on both sides of the borders insisting on these heightened security measures? If you are like most of us, we hear everyday on the news about drug smuggling events, human trafficking events, bomb threats, heists, and drivers getting killed for their cargo, not to mention the accidents that happen within the transportation industry as well. These measures are for our safety as much as they are for security. The requirements for Trucks are as follows: you must have your loads secured at all times, your cab must be equipped with locks on all doors and when you are not in your cab you are required to keep all of the doors locked. You are required to turn off your truck when not on the road travelling, sitting idle is no longer allowed due to both security as well as the environmental concerns.

10

During domestic travel your trailer is required to be locked and sealed with either a padlock device or a bull dog style seal. During International transport you are required to Seal your trailers with a high security seal that meets the ISO PAS 17712:2010. If you are a CTPAT, FAST and PIP Certified Company you are aware of this fact and as you are also aware, if you, being driver and company, are caught without a Seal that meets this standard you will receive a warning,

second warning you will receive notice that if you are caught again without a Seal you will be removed from these programs by CBP and CBSA, there is no third strike as you are out. Just in case you are wondering, this applies to both sides of the Land Driven borders both Canada and the U.S.A., for International Sea travel these regulations apply to all Ocean port freight; these regulations also apply for International Air freight. Both U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Canada Border Services Agency have a complex mission for protecting our borders with a broad range of law enforcement authorities for screening all foreign visitors, returning citizens as well as all imported cargo that enters our countries at over 600 land, air and sea ports. In the aftermath of the terrorist’s attacks from 911 the U.S.A. began developing antiterrorism programs such as the FAST Free And Secure Trade program and the C-TPAT Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism. These programs along with the CSI Container Security Initiative, PIP Partners In Protection and the TTP Trusted Traders Program known both to Canada and the EU European Union; have put forth a fight against terrorism worldwide. CSI addresses maritime container security, with over 11 million maritime containers arriving in

o

North American ports, under the requirements there must be a 7 point inspection done prior to the loading of goods into the container and for load securement requiring containers to be Sealed with High Security Seals that meet or exceed the ISO PAS 17712:2010 standard. All containers are prescreened utilizing large-scale X-ray, gamma ray machines and radiation detection devices prior to departing all ports. Land borders cross over 11 million trucks and 2.7 million rail cars every year. All drivers and conductors are responsible for knowing what is inside of every tractor, trailer, container and rail car. With the implementation of such programs as the C-TPAT, PIP and FAST, heightened security measures protecting our borders that have become mandatory as in the regulations for locks and seals on all trailers, containers and rail cars are clearly making a giant step in the right direction. Having given all of this information regarding border protection, here is a listing of load securement devices as per requirements: 17-point inspections of conveyances must be conducted prior to all shipments. Stickers that State “SECURED” may be affixed to the contents in the trailer and to the goods that are stored in a Warehouse. LTL carriers must use a high-security padlock or similar locking device when operating domestically and must have strict controls limiting access to all keys or combinations. TL Carriers domestically must also utilize a high-security padlock or similar locking device such as a bulldog seal. For all International Border Crossing Trucks a High-Security Bolt Seal or Cable Seal that meets the ISO PAS 17712:2010 must be utilized.

Please be very aware that there are many “knock-offs” of these seals that claim to be C-TPAT Certified and/or ISO Certified which in fact are not; you need to be very careful of your source. For LTL consolidation, once the freight has been sorted and loaded, the trailer must be affixed with the high-security seal that meets the ISO PAS 17712:2010 standard. Container Security regulations, a high-security seal that meets the ISO PAS 17712:2010 standard must be used.

Note from Dave!

If you see suspicious activity, persons asking you for a ride across the border in your vehicle, a loose lipped driver talking about smuggling loads of weapons or drugs, do us all a big favour and contact authorities. Try to get as much information as possible without becoming involved and shut these bad guys down. They are bad for our business.

Congressman Ribble gets ride-along from Women In Trucking By; Ellen Voie CAE, President/CEO Women in Trucking

It’s not every day a professional driver can share her thoughts with a Congressman, especially one who serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Lisa Buhrow, a driver for Walmart Private Fleet, recently shared her experience with U.S. Rep. Reid Ribble (R-WI). The ride-along was arranged by the Women In Trucking (WIT) Association and began with an informal discussion at the Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC) in Appleton, Wisconsin. Congressman Ribble talked about trucking issues with Lisa and also met FVTC graduate Julie Matulle, the 2014 Top Rookie of the Year and professional driver for H.O. Wolding, Inc. Not only did Congressman Ribble learn about the trucking industry from the driver’s perspective, his visit to FVTC was to one of the top driver truck training facilities in the Midwest where women drivers make up about twelve to fifteen percent of the program's student base. Officials from FVTC, including Rob Behnke, Chair of Truck Driver Training, greeted the media and attendees, which also included Wisconsin State Rep. Mike Rohrkaste. WIT President/CEO Ellen Voie also spoke with the elected officials and discussed the importance of bringing more women into the industry.

14

Women In Trucking Association, Inc. is a nonprofit association established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. Membership is not limited to women, as 16 percent of its members are men who support the mission. For more information visit;

By Marc Palud Xp3 Canada Xp3 is the Fuel Upgrader

X p 3

Every once in a while, we come across new technologies that improves our lifestyles, businesses and health. Getting access to new products & services capable of positive changes has always been an exciting part of life. The challenge consumers face in today's marketplace is finding products that stand out from the others, doing our research, then personally putting the product to the test. Xp3 is one of those new and important technologies that is making positive changes to owner operators and fleets all over the transportation industry.

Without Xp3 Treated Fuel

A 他 ton diesel truck that normally consumes 16 litres to travel 100 kilometers, assuming that the cost of diesel is at $1 per litre and the truck has a 100 litre tank. One tank will get 625 kilometers of distance travelled at a cost of $100 for the diesel for a per kilometer cost of 16 cents per km.

32

With Xp3 Enhanced Fuel

By being able to extract more energy out of the fuel, the same 他 ton diesel truck gains a minimum of 3% better fuel economy and now consumes 15.5 litres for every 100 kilometers travelled. Add $3 for the Xp3 fuel treatment, and the cost to travel 645 kilometers is $103, for a cost per kilometer travelled being at 16 cents per km. At a 3% improvement, Xp3 becomes a NET-ZERO cost product to use and all of the other benefits gained by using Xp3 are at NO COST. That $3 of Xp3 gained you 20 additional kilometers travelled providing you with an instant return on investment. If your vehicle nets better than a 3% improvement in fuel economy, then Xp3 becomes a profit generator providing you more value than it costs in kilometers travelled alone and all of the other benefits are still at NO COST. See one of our participating dealers for full details. For more information on Xp3, go to

www.Xp3Canada.com

or call

1-800-507-4107.

Canada is now starting to see more truck drivers and owner operators smiling and feeling better about their businesses after they experience first-hand benefits of the new Xp3 Fuel Enhancer.

There is a new face on Ice Road

38

There is a new face on Ice Road Truckers this season Mike “Bad Apple ‘’ Simmons. Mike was born and raised in Cormack Newfoundland . Spending a lot of time with his Grandfather as a boy he was unknowingly preparing for his future . His grandfather was a heavy duty mechanic and owned an assortment of logging trucks and equipment . From as young as age 8 Mike has been working with his Pop learning the tricks of the trade . In his early 20’s headed out west to make a better life for himself, he quickly began working in the oil patch moving riggs.

He started off as a swamper learning the ins and outs of the industry . After swamping for a few years and learning all about the large combination trailers from some of the best in the business he began to drive the rigs himself . In his first season driving he was already pulling 16 wheel jeeps with 24 mid trailer and 8 wheel boosters hauling in excess of 120,000 lbs loads on some of the most treacherous roads in the foot hills of the Rockie Mountains . A few years later Mike started his own Pilot car / escort vehicle company,

Bad Apple Escorts Inc

( badappleescorts.com) and now has a family of 2 young boys a lovely wife with a little girl on the way. Mike also works for a company named “Inter-Rail Transport “out of Edmonton AB. There he hauls some of the biggest equipment in north America , such as 793 rock trucks , pc2000 excavators , huge crawler cranes ,direction drilling riggs and pretty much anything that’s big and needs to move. Mike states “Inter-Rail is the best and busiest company I have ever worked for and really enjoy hauling the big stuff.” Over the years Mike has built up the confidence and know how to haul the biggest loads over the badest roads , which also landed him on season 9 of Ice Road Truckers . Mike couldn’t give away any details of the show but did say that he was brought in as an overdimensional specialist to give Mark from Polar the upper hand

Truckers this season Mike “Bad Apple ‘’ Simmons. on his competition this season . Mike has assured us that his team has got some incredible footage and that this season of Ice Road Truckers is a must watch. Mike Quotes “ I could not have prepared myself for this experience enough .” The ice is one thing but the winter roads leading to the ice crossing proved to be the real challenge. It’s like being on a moto cross track in a semi all day, every day . It takes a toll on a mans body for sure . It also takes a toll on a mans mind , trying to resist the urge to speed up and make up some miles but as soon as you do, that’s when that bump will come outta no where and rock your world .

That’s when equipment and bodies get broken . At first I was really outta my element and in unfamiliar territory . It didn’t take long to get my ice legs in under me and learn the ways of the Northern Manitoba winter roads .. and the rest in history “ See Mike “Bad Apple” Simmons in person at the Canadian Trucking Show and get some “Bad Apple” gear and an autograph and pictures. Be first to say you met him.

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again. Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop. From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio. Blackjacks Roadhouse and Games Room is a brand new building been created to host Clarence’s latest vision, this outstanding and beautiful building features amazing truss work and a 2nd floor grand stage over- looking our room. They boast the best buffet in the area, as well as a great Canadian & Chinese cuisine menu. Our games room is furnished with 25 V.L.T.s, 5 Minute Keno, Sports Select. Watch and play all the sports from our comfortable lounge. Trucker Friendly Please come by anytime and enjoy our menu and great service. Open 24 hours a day featuring specials daily. Spend some time wandering around looking at one of the largest collection of oilfield, trucking and car racing memorabilia dating back some 100 + years.
