Saturday, September 9 at 9 AM - 5 PM Departing from Red River Exhibition Park, then continuing on to Portage La Prairie for lunch, the winding up in Brandon for a silent auction and 50/50.

By Kris Goodman, Lean on Me

I am sure you have all heard the term Pay It Forward, well, I have started a new movement called Patch It Forward. A few year's back our daughters best friend took her own life. The families wishes were that people make a donation to the Manitoba Suicide Prevention & Support Line that is operated by Klinic. Having known this young lady for as long as I had, I wanted to do more than just a single donation.

With the help of my wife, Ruth-Ann, my friend Rod and a few others, I came up with the LEAN ON ME patch. Each patch sells for $10.00, half of which gets donted to Klinic, the other half goes to making more patches. Patches are currently available through River City Rides or myself or my wife Ruth-Ann. If patches are not your thing, check out KB2 Clothing in the sponsor section, and you can peruse the various options of clothing available with LEAN ON ME on it. Proceeds of all clothing sold will be donated to our cause. http://www.patchitforward.ca

Look what Bruce Querel & Richard Wiebe has at Querel Trailers! Trailers for work or home of all sizes. We had this one at the Canadian Trucking Show and it worked great! Thanks Querel

Drug-Smuggling Trucker faces Justice By Dave MacKENZIE over 30 years LawEnforcement

A judge has acquitted a Langley trucker who was arrested after 23 kilograms of cocaine was found in a secret compartment in his vehicle at the Canada-U.S. border. Major Singh Gausal, the owner of Gausal Trucking Ltd, was detained when he tried to bring his tractor-trailer unit through the Huntingdon border crossing on Dec. 3, 2012. At the time, he was returning to Canada after picking up two loads of produce in California. He stated that he had no goods to declare. But Canada Border Services Agency officers, who were informed that the refrigerator unit at the front of the trailer was of interest, conducted a search of the vehicle. A power drill used by an officer on the front wall of the trailer penetrated a barrier that he believed should not have been present and upon extraction, a white powdery substance was found on the drill bit that turned out to be cocaine. The front wall of the trailer was dismantled, revealing a secret compartment comprising five vertical subcompartments below the reefer unit. Inside the compartments were 23 one-kilogram bricks of cocaine, each brick wrapped in red plastic. Police determined the wholesale value of the drugs to be close to $1 million and the street value more than $2 million. Gausal was arrested and charged with one count of importing a controlled substance and one count of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. In his ruling in the case, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Gordon Weatherill said it was clear that the accused had control over the trailer at the time the cocaine was found. e said the main issue was whether Gausal had actual knowledge or was wilfully blind as to the presence of the drugs in his truck, noting that the case was entirely circumstantial. The Crown argued the evidence did not give rise to any reasonable inference other than that Gausal was guilty as charged.

The prosecutor noted Gausal was alone in the truck that he owned through his company and that modifications to the interior of the vehicle were substantial and would have required a significant amount of time to install. In addition, the Crown pointed to the value of the drugs and said it defied common sense and reason that such a large and valuable cargo would be entrusted to anyone who did not know about it, and that the drug importer would have ensured that the courier knew about the drugs and took care. But the judge said that although the Crown's arguments "generally exude reason and common sense," the problem was that the evidence showed the accused was anything but careful. He noted Gausal had received a ticket in the U.S. for having too much weight over his rear axles and had to redistribute the load by opening one of the pallets. Gausal made no attempt to secure the contents and the contents shifted and were strewn about, the disarray attracting the attention of the border officers. "It is difficult to believe that anyone with knowledge of the significant quantity of cocaine in the trailer would not have taken steps to properly secure the load in order to avoid the very arousal of curiosity and interest that led to the discovery of the cocaine in this case," said the judge. "If the rationale of the drug importers was to avoid the use of a so-called blind courier because they might be careless, that rationale failed miserably in this case." The judge added it was "highly significant" that all of the officers who dealt with Gausal found him to be co-operative and not showing any sign of suspicious behaviour. Gausal's lawyers suggested it was reasonably plausible that employees of the facilities where the produce was picked up were to blame for the cocaine shipment, the judge noted. And while it may be that the accused "probably" had knowledge of the drugs, probable guilt does not meet the criminal standard of proof, said Weatherill. If you have information about suspicious cross-border activity, please contact the CBSA Border Watch Toll free Line at 1-888-502-9060.

CALL BORDER WATCH~ 1.888.502.9060

Note from Dave!

If you see suspicious activity, persons asking you for a ride across the border in your vehicle, a loose lipped driver talking about smuggling loads of weapons or drugs, do us all a big favour and contact authorities. Try to get as much information as possible without becoming involved and shut these bad guys down. They are bad for our business. 10

Margaret Foster, the founder of Furry Hobos and Hiway Heroes, along with her Ambassador Dog, Pickles pose outside of Thunder Bay, Ont. (Jeff Walters/CBC) Rescue dogs and lost pets who need a ride home have a new group of allies in Canada: truck drivers. A group based in Thunder Bay, Ont., will help coordinate rides for animals who are heading from one part of the country to another. Furry Hobos and Hiway Heroes is the creation of Margaret Foster. A former truck driver, she took it upon herself to help coordinate rides for those with four legs. "It actually gives them something they feel good about. I mean, you go up and down the road here, you see the accidents and everything else that happens," said Foster. She said nearly 300 dogs have been transported through the group to their new homes, anywhere in Canada. She said some trucks in the United States are also now part of her 'network', allowing for international movement of the animals in need. Foster said drivers are not compensated, but she asks for a donation of home baking, or a gift card for coffee. Help from the community Foster said many of the drivers

have their own animals in their trucks, that they refer to as 'An Ambassador.' The one ambassador cat of the group, named Turtle, recently got out of a truck in Granby, QC. Foster said she's overwhelmed, as it seems the whole community wants to find the cat. She said the Ambassador animals are a key part of the program. "The dogs are so relaxed, they introduce them before they come into the truck." " They show them the bunk, like 'this is where we can lay and sleep' and it just keeps them really really calm and collected. And, they enjoy it." As for continuing to help ferry rescue animals, or those who are lost and found to their proper homes, Foster said most drivers can't get enough of it. "[One driver], he gets a hold of me all the time and says, 'Margaret, I'm getting tired of laughing at my own jokes, you'd better give me a dog.'" Visit on FaceBook; Furry Hobos N Hiway Hero"s. Dog gone Truckin! Thanks Margaret!!

Safety Solutions not just a good idea, a requirement! By Dave MacKenzie Outsoucing, cost effective, best way to do business. Within the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) Operational Model, the Safety Measurement System (SMS) quantifies the on-road safety performance of carriers and drivers to identify candidates for interventions, determine the specific safety problems that a carrier or driver exhibits, and to monitor whether safety problems are improving or worsening. The large companies have extensive safety departments that handle all aspects of training and enforcement to ensure they meet the requirements of SMS. A great deal of skill and training is needed in order to maintain levels acceptable should an audit come in play. Blackthorn on the following page offer services to those companies that seek to be compliant in a cost effective way with experience Blackthorn members to run programs that meet and exceed CSA requirement from the skills that have manifested in these Blackthorn members from years of being compliant. SMS keeps you the driver safe on the road turning wheels making a living while not putting your health and safety at risk.

SMS has replaced SafeStat in the new Operational Model. SMS uses a motor carrier’s data from roadside inspections, including all safety-based violations, State-reported crashes, and the Federal motor carrier census to quantify performance in the following Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). After a measurement is determined, the carrier is then placed in a peer group (e.g., other carriers with similar numbers of inspections). Percentiles from 0 to 100 are then determined by comparing the BASIC measurements of the carrier to the measurements of other carriers in the peer group. A percentile 100 indicates the worst performance. Now that we have covered the SMS in these short pages if you don’t have a dedicated safety department to meet or exceed these requirements have your company contact Blackthorn and get those ducks in a row. Blackthorn a CTM top rated Safety provider, talk to ownership today about outsourcing to Blackthorn a win win for everyone. .

Every Wonder which Oil is

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 3, 2017) – At the NASCAR Fuel For Business meetings in New York City, NASCAR® and ExxonMobil announced the renewal of a long-standing partnership that will continue to designate the Mobil 1™ brand as the "Official Motor Oil of NASCAR®". The newly signed agreement will extend the successful partnership to 20 years, which has been highlighted by marketing and technological innovation that has catalyzed growth across both entities. "Mobil 1 is one of the most recognizable brands in the world and we are pleased to continue our longstanding partnership for years to come," said Lou Garate, vice president, partnership marketing, NASCAR. "Our partner utilizes its official status as a powerful part of its marketing mix through advertising, packaging, point-of-sale and promotions, helping market NASCAR to millions of Americans." The continued partnership with NASCAR is increasingly beneficial to the Mobil 1 brand. A recent study from Turnkey sports and entertainment found that at the end of the 2016 race season, the number of NASCAR race fans identifying Mobil 1 as the "Official Motor Oil of NASCAR" was at a three year high, increasing steadily among avid and casual NASCAR fans each year since the end of the 2014 season. The proportion of

avid NASCAR fans stating they would be more likely to purchase a product from an Official NASCAR Partner has also increased 13% over the same period. According to a recent independent study from Simmons Research, NASCAR fans are 30% more likely than non-fans to add or change motor oil themselves or have another household member do so. "We are delighted to continue to serve as the ‘Official Motor Oil of NASCAR’," said Kai Decker, global motorsports manager at ExxonMobil. "The renewed partnership allows us to connect with racing of the most popular and exciting motorsport series in the country. NASCAR has also been integral in helping support the launch of Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil." According to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil is used by more than 50% of teams competing in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series™, NASCAR XFINITY Series™ and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series™. The use of these oils across all three NASCAR national series provides a testing ground for ExxonMobil engineers, who create products for race fans and general consumers, which are proven to perform under the most challenging of conditions. ExxonMobil extensively utilized Mobil 1’s "Official Motor Oil of NASCAR" status to help launch Mobil 1 Annual Protection, which allows drivers to go one full year – or

the Official Oil of NASCAR 20,000 miles whichever comes first – between oil changes. For the breakout product’s nationwide advertising campaign, StewartHaas Racing driver, Kevin Harvick, features as the hero of the commercials, while also being featured in a prominent video series on social media. A new digital video series featuring the entire Stewart-Haas Racing team is also supporting the new product. Furthermore, the Mobil 1 Annual Protection product appeared as primary sponsor on a hood for each of the Stewart-Haas Racing drivers at NASCAR tracks throughout the 2017 season. To further support the launch of Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil, ExxonMobil will host a fan friendly event at Plaza33 outside New York City’s most iconic basketball arena on Wednesday, August 16. It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again. Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop. From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio. Blackjacks Roadhouse and Games Room is a brand new building been created to host Clarence’s latest vision, this outstanding and beautiful building features amazing truss work and a 2nd floor grand stage over- looking our room. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY WESTRANS is a leading remanufacturer and supplier of parts for commercial trucks and trailers, light duty vehicles, agricultural equipment, and heavy duty industrial equipment, with branches in Winnipeg, Regina, and Thunder Bay. With a humble start in1967, Wes-T-Rans, as the company was then known, opened as a remanufacturer of transmissions and differentials for light duty trucks at a small shop on Bannister Road in Winnipeg. The company quickly found a market for its product at local repair shops, including Canadian Tire service centres. The 1970’s saw rapid growth adding new mechanics to keep up with demand, billing itself as the largest automatic transmission builder in Winnipeg. In the 1970s, the company expanded and diversified, adding services such as brake shoe relines, drive shaft rebuilds, and automatic transmissions for performance vehicles. As well, Wes-T-Rans established its retail parts store. Bill Weaver Music

BILL'S BIO Born into a military family and living all over the United States and spending my life around a variety of musicians, singers and incredibly strong musical influences from many family friends, it was only natural that music and travel would be in my blood and in my heart. I remember as a very small child writing poems, songs and words and have always had a passion for singing and writing and an insatiable passion for others who do the same. Around the age of five years my Dad and Grandpa bought me a second hand guitar at a yard sale and from that moment on I was hooked on learning to play the guitar and keep time while singing. This experience would grow while spending hours in front of the television playing along with Buck Owens, Roy Clark and all the Hee Haw musicians, as well as the Johnny Cash show, the Glen Campbell show and all of the popular music shows of the 1970s and 1980s. Picking and choosing from all of the sounds that fascinated me, including the sounds of the Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Marshall Tucker Band, the Allman Brothers, and many other southern rock and alternative rock and country groups, I learned to frame words and put them to my own style of music, which is a mix of every sound that is pleasing to me. My experiences on stage and driving a truck giving me long periods away from home, paired with loneliness and emptiness, give me a perfect canvas on which to paint a picture that all of us can relate to and derive a sense of pride in what we do and where we are going in life. I write all kinds of songs, including love songs, and most are primarily trucking songs, which is what the "Every Mile I Drive" album consists of. All of these songs are true to life and truly amazing musically, being crafted by the finest musicians to grace any stage. My goal is to bring some pride back to the working man and woman, because we are what keeps the world turning, and great music makes it better. I pray my songs touch your heart because they were written from mine, God Bless!
