By Dawn Truell ~ CBS ~ CBSA & CBP Beauty & The Beast – Nature vs Alltime Drug Smuggling

Over the weekend of May 15, 2015, six tons of marijuana was discovered in a commercial truck carrying furniture, value was $8.1 million. CBP Customs & Border Protection Officers in California at the Otay Mesa port of entry stopped a 1996 Freightliner tractor-trailer truck crossing the border with a manifested furniture shipment, after questioning at the border point they sent the driver over for secondary screening. 1,160 bundles of marijuana on pallets of furniture weighing six-tons were found by the port’s imaging system. A CBP detector dog sniffed the pallets and seemed to zone in on a certain area alerting his partner officer; upon search they found inside of boxes and behind a falsewall that was built into the front of the trailer, 12,657 pounds of marijuana; street value $7.6 million. Not surprisingly the driver was a 46 year old Mexican who was residing in Baja, California, he was arrested and U.S. Customs & Border Protection Department Homeland Security took him into custody. On May 16, 2015 Customs & Border Protection Officers along side their canine team were screening vehicles and the dogs alarmed a 2007 Chrysler Sebring at the same port of entry at the Otay Mesa, this vehicle was sent

10

over for secondary screening. Upon investigation the officers discovered 32 wrapped packages equalling 49 pounds of heroin that were actually found in the vehicles rocker panels. The street value was worth $600,000. The male driver was 57 years old, a U.S. citizen and lived in Las Vegas. He was arrested and Homeland Security took him into custody.

In Riverside County, California, 350 pounds of cocaine was discovered in 156 brick sized packages that were found in a false wall in a trailer that had been found parked near the 6th street and 15 Freeway. The value of this cocaine was $5 million. Samer Karanouh, 44 years old, a Canadian citizen, was arrested and being held on a very large bail amount set at $1 million, not likely he will being seeing sunshine anytime soon! On May 8, 2015, At the MontréalTrudeau Airport, Canada Border Services Agency Officers discovered 344 kg of hashish in an air cargo container.

They inspected 18 cardboard boxes that were sent from Lahore, Pakistan that were destined to an address in MontrĂŠal. They had been declared on customs documents as containing shoe soles, when officer inspected these boxes they found Inside multiple bags of coffee which actually contained a pasty brown substance that was quite obviously from the look, texture and scent, not coffee! After laboratory tests it was revealed that the substance was actually hashish. The RCMP are continuing the investigation for further details and arrests. On June 3, 2015 at the Queenston Lewiston Bridge between Queenston Heights, Ontario and Buffalo, New York, CBSA seized 44.7 kg of cocaine. The 57-year-old driver was pulled over for secondary screening; while officers were searching his truck they found some sort of package that had been hidden inside of a hand built compartment. While inspecting this area they found 43 bricks of cocaine weighing 44.7 kg, the RCMP were called and the driver was arrested then taken into custody. CBP OFO seized the narcotics valued at approximately $95,540 and seized the Lincoln as well.

CBP OFO arrested both persons who were ultimately released to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents for further investigation.

The Women In Trucking Association represen all women in Trucking By; Ellen Voie CAE, President/CEO Women in Trucking

The Women In Trucking Association represents all women employed in the trucking industry. We represent the women who design the trucks, build the trucks, buy the trucks, fix the trucks and drive the trucks. If you are one of the five percent of female drivers or one of the fourteen percent of female managers in the trucking industry, we are here for you. The overall purpose of the organization is to increase the percentage of women working in the trucking industry to utilize unrealized potential. As former US DOT Secretary ray LaHood said, “After all – regardless of gender – everyone uses our transportation systems, and those systems will serve us more effectively when they are planned, designed, engineered and built by the professionals who represent all of us.” So, why are women under-represented within the management group of a typical trucking company? Remember the days of Smith (or Jones or Miller) and Sons Trucking? Many fathers brought their sons into the family business to carry on the tradition. Today, you can find many daughters who have taken over their parents’ companies, but there are still not enough women in the executive suite. Although women comprise nearly half of the labor force and earn more degrees than their male peers, women in the top ranks in

14

transportation careers are in the minority. Why should YOU want this to change? Pepperdine University found a correlation between high-level female executives and business success. Harvard Business Review reported that firms with the best records for promoting women outperform industry medians with overall profits 34 percent higher. Catalyst Research found that companies with the highest representation of women leaders financially outperform, on average, companies with the lowest. It makes good, financial sense to have more women in leadership roles within your organization. What are some of the reasons this hasn’t been accomplished so far? There are many things we can point to in order to understand WHY women aren’t more visible in toplevel roles. First, there are biological reasons! According to research conducted by Kay & Shipman in The Atlantic, women are driven by estrogen (men by testosterone) and estrogen encourages bonding and connection and discourages conflict and risk taking. Women activate the amygdalae (the brain’s fear center) more easily than men and testosterone encourages a focus on winning and demonstrating power. Women who were given testosterone were less able to collaborate. What does this mean in regard to career progression? Taking risks is associated with working outside your comfort zone and pushing beyond your normal duties. As Halla Tomasdottir, an Icelandic Fund Manager stated, “White

nts male values are about risk-taking, short-term

gain and a focus on the individual, female values tend toward risk–awareness, the long term and team goals.” That is what makes women more valuable in the boardroom but less valued by their male peers who view assertiveness and boldness as leadership traits more often exhibited by men. Yale Psychologist, Victoria Brescoll found that male executives who spoke more often than their peers were rated ten percent higher in competence. However, when female executives spoke more than their peers, both men and women gave them a fourteen percent lower rating in competence. Apparently we find assertiveness to be more acceptable for men and less positive

for women. In fact, an article titled, Gender, Job Authority, and Depression, in the December 2014 Journal of Health and Social Behavior stated that women with job authority have more education, higher incomes, more prestigious occupations and higher levels of job satisfaction… . and worse mental health than lower status women. When women display assertiveness and confidence they are judged negatively for being unfeminine. This contributes to chronic stress. In order to secure a place for women in leadership roles within the trucking industry, we need to better understand the values women bring to the boardroom. More importantly, we need to view those values as being important for company growth and stability.

After all, shouldn’t we follow Former Secretary LaHood’s advice and make sure the trucking industry management team represents those who rely on this industry to ensure their consumer needs are met? Women In Trucking was established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. Membership is not limited to women, as sixteen percent of its members are men who support the mission. For more information visit;

By Marc Palud Xp3 Canada Xp3 is the Fuel Upgrader

X p 3

Every once in a while, we come across new technologies that improves our lifestyles, businesses and health. Getting access to new products & services capable of positive changes has always been an exciting part of life. The challenge consumers face in today's marketplace is finding products that stand out from the others, doing our research, then personally putting the product to the test. Xp3 is one of those new and important technologies that is making positive changes to owner operators and fleets all over the transportation industry.

Without Xp3 Treated Fuel

A 他 ton diesel truck that normally consumes 16 litres to travel 100 kilometers, assuming that the cost of diesel is at $1 per litre and the truck has a 100 litre tank. One tank will get 625 kilometers of distance travelled at a cost of $100 for the diesel for a per kilometer cost of 16 cents per km.

32

With Xp3 Enhanced Fuel

By being able to extract more energy out of the fuel, the same 他 ton diesel truck gains a minimum of 3% better fuel economy and now consumes 15.5 litres for every 100 kilometers travelled. Add $3 for the Xp3 fuel treatment, and the cost to travel 645 kilometers is $103, for a cost per kilometer travelled being at 16 cents per km. At a 3% improvement, Xp3 becomes a NET-ZERO cost product to use and all of the other benefits gained by using Xp3 are at NO COST. That $3 of Xp3 gained you 20 additional kilometers travelled providing you with an instant return on investment. If your vehicle nets better than a 3% improvement in fuel economy, then Xp3 becomes a profit generator providing you more value than it costs in kilometers travelled alone and all of the other benefits are still at NO COST. See one of our participating dealers for full details. For more information on Xp3, go to

www.Xp3Canada.com

or call

1-800-507-4107.

Canada is now starting to see more truck drivers and owner operators smiling and feeling better about their businesses after they experience first-hand benefits of the new Xp3 Fuel Enhancer.

There is a new face on Ice Road

38

There is a new face on Ice Road Truckers this season Mike “Bad Apple ‘’ Simmons. Mike was born and raised in Cormack Newfoundland . Spending a lot of time with his Grandfather as a boy he was unknowingly preparing for his future . His grandfather was a heavy duty mechanic and owned an assortment of logging trucks and equipment . From as young as age 8 Mike has been working with his Pop learning the tricks of the trade . In his early 20’s headed out west to make a better life for himself, he quickly began working in the oil patch moving riggs.

He started off as a swamper learning the ins and outs of the industry . After swamping for a few years and learning all about the large combination trailers from some of the best in the business he began to drive the rigs himself . In his first season driving he was already pulling 16 wheel jeeps with 24 mid trailer and 8 wheel boosters hauling in excess of 120,000 lbs loads on some of the most treacherous roads in the foot hills of the Rockie Mountains . A few years later Mike started his own Pilot car / escort vehicle company,

Bad Apple Escorts Inc

( badappleescorts.com) and now has a family of 2 young boys a lovely wife with a little girl on the way. Mike also works for a company named “Inter-Rail Transport “out of Edmonton AB. There he hauls some of the biggest equipment in north America , such as 793 rock trucks , pc2000 excavators , huge crawler cranes ,direction drilling riggs and pretty much anything that’s big and needs to move. Mike states “Inter-Rail is the best and busiest company I have ever worked for and really enjoy hauling the big stuff.” Over the years Mike has built up the confidence and know how to haul the biggest loads over the badest roads , which also landed him on season 9 of Ice Road Truckers . Mike couldn’t give away any details of the show but did say that he was brought in as an overdimensional specialist to give Mark from Polar the upper hand

Truckers this season Mike “Bad Apple ‘’ Simmons. on his competition this season . Mike has assured us that his team has got some incredible footage and that this season of Ice Road Truckers is a must watch. Mike Quotes “ I could not have prepared myself for this experience enough .” The ice is one thing but the winter roads leading to the ice crossing proved to be the real challenge. It’s like being on a moto cross track in a semi all day, every day . It takes a toll on a mans body for sure . It also takes a toll on a mans mind , trying to resist the urge to speed up and make up some miles but as soon as you do, that’s when that bump will come outta no where and rock your world .

That’s when equipment and bodies get broken . At first I was really outta my element and in unfamiliar territory . It didn’t take long to get my ice legs in under me and learn the ways of the Northern Manitoba winter roads .. and the rest in history “ See Mike “Bad Apple” Simmons in person at the Canadian Trucking Show and get some “Bad Apple” gear and an autograph and pictures. Be first to say you met him.

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again. Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop. From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio. Blackjacks Roadhouse and Games Room is a brand new building been created to host Clarence’s latest vision, this outstanding and beautiful building features amazing truss work and a 2nd floor grand stage over- looking our room. They boast the best buffet in the area, as well as a great Canadian & Chinese cuisine menu. Our games room is furnished with 25 V.L.T.s, 5 Minute Keno, Sports Select. Watch and play all the sports from our comfortable lounge. Trucker Friendly Please come by anytime and enjoy our menu and great service. Open 24 hours a day featuring specials daily. Spend some time wandering around looking at one of the largest collection of oilfield, trucking and car racing memorabilia dating back some 100 + years.
