It’s hard to say which was the best booth I visited at SEMA, as they all had thier own themes and celebrities at them. But the money booth was something I always wanted to try, and I will again because I was too busy reporting than enjoying grabbing for money, US dollars too. Watch for some video’s on our CTM Facebook page about the new Auto sock for tires that fit and work on Big trucks as CTM tests these out. Any suggestions for the magazine, let me know as this magazine is built for your entertainment to help make the road a little easier. See more in the digital magazine and the next few pages, digital does not limit the amount of good stuff we can provide you! Read on ,,,,,

By Dawn Truell ~ CBS ~ TERRORISM HITS EUROPE, THE EFFECTS ON WORLD TRADE!

Due to recent Terror attacks in Paris on Friday the 13th where unfortunately at least 129 people perished, we have felt the need to inform everyone in the transportation community about the possible border ramifications for international trade traffic and shipment movements. Expect delays at all border points across Canada/U.S.A./Mexico. Due to the further attacks spreading into Germany and Mali as well as the threats on NYC, D.C. and Canada, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Canadian Central Intelligence are strengthening all border entry points both land travel, affecting both passenger vehicles and truck traffic and as well the airports security has been tightened, CATSA. With these terrorists having gained fake passports and moving countries through migrant routes as refugees, North America is on heightened alert now. To be ready please have the following documents in your immediate possession: Passport, Birth Certificate, Drivers License with photo, Permanent Residency Card if applicable, reason for travel documents such as personal travel hotel reservations, airline tickets, commercial travel proof of shipments documentation including pick up and destination locations. Remember back on September 11, 2001? The Terrorist attacks on the U.S.A. were a tragic lifechanging event for all of the citizens of the United States of America. These effects spread to Canada. International Trade came to a Halt on that horrific day; borders between Canada and the U.S. were closed. No passenger vehicles, no trucks, no trains, no buses, no planes were allowed to cross either in or out of Canada and the U.S.A. World Trade’s heart beat stopped in that moment when the first plane hit the World Trade Centre, shock spread around the world . As the progression of the Terrorist attacks pushed on, the world came to a close for that day. As the days passed and the International Trade Organization pushed on to open the borders once again, the new system of the colour-coded alerts Homeland Security Advisory System went into effect. During the 911 days weeks and months that followed the colour remained in the Red. In 2012 once things started to rest the colour turned to Orange, fluctuating over the years that followed between Red – Severe risk of terrorist attacks, Orange – High risk of terrorist attacks, Yellow – Elevated significant risk of terrorist attacks, Blue – Guarded general risk of terrorist attacks, and Green – Low risk of terrorist attacks.

10

Today the U.S. CBP has come out with the new launch of their NTAS National Terrorism Advisory System replacing the old colour-coded system. The NTAS relays more effective communication about terrorist threats by providing up to date on time detailed information to both the public and emergency responders including CBP and CBSA. For the Trucking Industry this meant that driving to the border would take a significantly longer time, backups of truck traffic long beyond the border check points and all the way back into the country of origin. Then came the birth of the program C-TPAT, Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism.

This program was forged as an Anti Terrorism Vetting Program. A company be it Transportation via Trucking, Ocean, Rail or Air filled out a series of documents agreeing to heighten their security at both their place of business, their trucks, trailers, containers, ocean freightliners, and airplanes, from their cargo handling areas to the very floors and ceilings of their modes of transportation. It also became mandatory to Vet the individuals who were at the helm of these transportation vices. The benefits for these companies most notably were easing the cross border traffic with expediting border wait times and the creation of the FAST Lanes specifically for Trucks. Over the past 14 years since C-TPAT and FAST’s creations, the programs have moved into the high tech community with online portal systems that not only speed up the application and certification processes but allows both CBP and CBSA the ability to view the profiles of the various companies and persons in the online computer border processing units. The Canadian government had already come out with a PIP Partners In Protection Program back in 1995 that was carved out to protect Canada. Post the tragedy of 911; the U.S.A.’s creation of the C-TPAT was closely based on the PIP Program. In October 2014 the EU European Union attended meetings in Canada and signed on with the partnership with TTP Trusted Trader Partners Program and the PIP. Now joined forces across the board with the C-TPAT united with the PIP, the AEO Automated Economic Operators – partners around the world and then the EU’s TTP.

Giant strides were made to create ease and Now this is not to take away from the fact gain trust within the Worlds International Trade. that there are thousands of true refugees seeking asyAlthough Terrorism unfortunately will never end lum here to escape the wars in their homelands and we completely, these programs were designed to aid in counter want to help them with open arms, our borders still need terrorism. to be protected so as not to allow a similar incident to When events such as the Terror attacks re- happen here as did in Paris tragically on Friday the 13th, cently in Paris and that are now spreading to Germany and 2015. the threats against Canada and the U.S.A. and let us all For further information regarding all hope and pray not the rest of the world, the trucking and Compliancy programs, Safety & Security, Transtransportation industry again is getting hit hard at the borportation, C-TPAT, FAST, PIP, CSA, please contact ders. A Syrian passport of a dead soldier had been found in the possession of the body of one of the suicide bombers at the Stade de France during the Paris attacks on Friday the 13th. This terrorist had taken what they call a migrant route starting in Greece, going to Britain, Germany and then France. By; Ellen Voie CAE, President/CEO Women in Trucking

Women In Trucking Association (WIT) announces Danielle Roszko as its October Member of the Month. Danielle is President of Supply Chain and Pratt Logistics, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Georgia-based Pratt Industries, America’s leading 100 percent recycled paper and packaging company. Growing up in Michigan and majoring in logistics at Michigan State University, going to work for Ford Motor Company after graduation seemed the natural next step. She spent the next decade getting to know the business with the automobile manufacturer, mostly in operations and purchasing with occasional stints in transportation. Now, from her office at Pratt’s corporate headquarters in Conyers where she has worked since 2005, Danielle oversees an innovative logistic group that operates a brokerage and an asset division with more than 325 trucks and 400 drivers across the U.S. Despite the pressures and demands of the job, she also leads the procurement team for Pratt. Danielle has a drive and spirit that sets her apart from many in her industry. She welcomes the everyday challenges of the job as she manages a vast nationwide network of people and equipment. That energy and competitive nature serve her well outside of the boardroom as well – as an endurance athlete. “Playing sports keeps me sane, and spending time with my family and friends keeps me grounded,” she said. But her idea of “playing sports” is different to most people’s ideas. Danielle is a long-time triathlete, and has successfully finished three Ironman races – which include swimming 2.4 miles, riding a bike for 112 miles, then finishing off with a 26.2 mile marathon – all in a matter of hours. “I really like to seek out challenges that force me to keep pushing, keep striving to do better,” she said. It’s the same attitude she exhibits in the boardroom. “The strengths of one feed and support the other,” she said. “Ironman races have taught me that no matter how well prepared you are for the event there will

14

always be obstacles and it is how you handle and overcome the adversity that is important.” Even though triathlons might be the ultimate lone wolf endeavor, Danielle is a big believer in team sports which she says have taught her about teamwork and relationships. “Having the right players in the right positions has led us to achieve success in the high growth environment. Relationships are critical to success,” she said, “because our team is spread out across the country and several time zones. It so important to stay connected to the team.” Even though she spends more time in the boardroom with Pratt’s executive leadership team, her business philosophy and approach to life is to still reach her driverteammate through site visits and a separate email that is just for drivers to contact her. Her philosophy appears to be working quite well. Under her leadership, Pratt Logistics has a driver turnover rate of less than 10%. Pratt Logistics offers its employees numerous incentives that provide for “a great quality of life.” “We have a steady flow of business which keeps work hours consistent and affords competitive pay and benefits,” she said. “Eighty percent of our drivers come home every day and the other 20 percent are coming home weekly.” Danielle doesn’t believe she leads differently because of her gender but she admits she does share certain attributes with other successful women. She will stand up for what she thinks is right and faces risks and challenges head on. Women In Trucking Association, Inc. is a nonprofit association established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. Membership is not limited to women, as 16 percent of its members are men who support the mission. Women In Trucking is supported by its members and the generosity of Gold Level Partners: Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, Daimler Trucks North America, GE Capital Transportation Finance, Great Dane Trailers, J.B. Hunt Transport, Ryder System, Inc., U.S. Xpress, and Walmart. Follow WIT on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn. For more information, visit http://www.womenintrucking.org or call 888-464-9482.

THANK-YOU JOHN OADES OF BEAVER

I say thank-you to John Oades instead of congrats, as John has giving it all to trucking. John won the Manitoba Trucking Association Associated Trade Award having gained the esteem of his fellow members and contributing to the programs and having contributed to the development of the MTA. Not surprising! John started with Beaver Truck Centre from the beginning around 1996 and has been a friendly face and a great resource to drivers since. No one knows trucks like John does. What John also does is support Trucking in every way, out at the Convoys, truck shows, truck pulls, anything trucking related. Never complains, always willing to listen, and a big smile and hand shake too. Visit John at Beaver and say Thankyou and congrats! Thanks John.. Dave

X p 3

Have you ever heard of a Mafia Offer?

It's an offer you can't refuse ;-). Well Xp Canada has come up with their own Mafia Offer, giving you an opportunity to self-validate how Xp3 will perform on your specific equipment, in your own operating environment at NO RISK to you! Their Mafia Offer is; "We guarantee that your operating cost per KM with Xp3 treated fuel will be less than non-treated fuel”. Make Denny's yours with MyDenny's, the only app that earns you perks with every bite you take. Denny’s Restaurants has been a staple of Canadian dining for the last 45 years, providing classic diner fare, an inviting atmosphere, and great value for all their guests. With 59 locations across the country, many located along major transit routes, Denny’s is a dining staple for drivers, providing a bit of comfort and familiarity when away from home. Denny’s has always placed a high importance on being a good value, but with their recently relaunched Loyalty Program they have found a way to make dining an even better deal, especially for their loyal customers. With a simple download from Google Play or the App store, the free MyDenny’s mobile app allows guests to earn points for every purchase at participating stores. Every purchase also earns a stamp on their digital loyalty card. Once the card has been filled in, members earn a special $5 reward coupon and a new card is started automatically. One of the big questions about the app, has been how hard is it to get enough points to get the rewards? Well the answer is it’s easy, and there are lots of added incentives to sign up! New members automatically get 50 points for registering and there are opportunities to earn bonus points by completing polls on the app and entering promo codes that are posted on social media or emailed to their members. It doesn’t take long to earn enough points to redeem for rewards such discounts on purchases or free food and beverages. Every week Denny’s is giving away one thousand points to a new member, so there is an added incentive to sign up. With over 45,000 members and growing quickly, the app is proving to be highly successful for both Denny’s and their customers. One of the cool new upgrades to the app is the ability to scan a QR code on the bottom of each receipt, making it quick and easy to add the points to your account. Members can also use the app to send invitations to meet up with friends and share points back and forth with other members. For the non-smartphone users, there is a desktop version of the loyalty program available at www.mydennys.ca providing all the perks, promotions, and contests available through the app. If you are a Blackberry user, you can use the mobile web version on your phone’s Internet browser, also at mydennys.ca.

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again. Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop. From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio. Blackjacks Roadhouse and Games Room is a brand new building been created to host Clarence’s latest vision, this outstanding and beautiful building features amazing truss work and a 2nd floor grand stage over- looking our room. They boast the best buffet in the area, as well as a great Canadian & Chinese cuisine menu. Our games room is furnished with 25 V.L.T.s, 5 Minute Keno, Sports Select. Watch and play all the sports from our comfortable lounge. Trucker Friendly Please come by anytime and enjoy our menu and great service. Open 24 hours a day featuring specials daily. Spend some time wandering around looking at one of the largest collection of oilfield, trucking and car racing memorabilia dating back some 100 + years.

40

BLACKJACKS always look forward to the opportunity to be of service.
