Large seizure in Montréal 3,000 litres of precursor chemical hypophosphorous acid

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents discovered nearly 3,100 pounds of marijuana disguised in a shipment of cucumbers at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016. Nearly two tons of marijuana hidden in a shipment of cucumbers was seized at the United States-Mexico border. According to the Unites States Customs and Border Protection, a 2009 Kenworth Tractor pulling a trailer with cargo manifested as cucumbers entered the Otay Mesa port of Entry at around 10:30 a.m. After the vehicle was referred for advanced inspection, agents opened the boxes and found 376 wrapped packages of marijuana hidden beneath the cucumbers. In total, the packages concealed 3,100 pounds of marijuana, carrying an estimated street value of $1.5 million.10 Lbs. of Pot Hidden in Cucumber Shipment In separate seizures at California ports of entry over the weekend, more than 500 pounds of marijuana, cocaine methamphetamine and heroine were intercepted, preventing an estimated $2.5 million worth of drugs from reaching the streets of the U.S. Seizure in Montréal of 3,000 litres of hypophosphorous acid, a precursor chemical widely used to produce methamphetamine.

The importer had declared it was a cleaning product. However, after reviewing the import documentation submitted, the border services officers submitted the goods to the CBSA’s laboratory for analysis. The analysis showed that the liquid solution seized was hypophosphorous acid, which requires a specific import permit from Health Canada’s Office of Controlled Substances. There were 120 25litre containers of hypophosphorous acid seized.

Trucking group helps bring rescue animals to new homes in Canada

Rescue dogs and lost pets who need a ride home have a new group of allies in Canada: truck drivers. A group based in Thunder Bay, Ont., will help coordinate rides for animals who are heading from one part of the country to another. Furry Hobos and Hiway Heroes is the creation of Margaret Foster. A former truck driver, she took it upon herself to help coordinate rides for those with four legs. "It actually gives them something they feel good about. I mean, you go up and down the road here, you see the accidents and everything else that happens," said Foster. She said nearly 300 dogs have been transported through the group to their new homes, anywhere in Canada. She said some trucks in the United States are also now part of her 'network', allowing for international movement of the animals in need. Foster said drivers are not compensated, but she asks for a donation of home baking, or a gift card for coffee. 18

Multicultural and Female Drivers to Compete for a Spot in NASCAR Drive for Diversity Developmental Program CTM Spot Light on Amber Balcaen Canada!

Seventeen drivers from across the country will compete for spots in the top driver development program in motorsports, NASCAR Drive for Diversity, during a national tryout at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway from Oct. 10-12. The 13th annual NASCAR Drive for Diversity Combine invites promising ethnically diverse and female drivers from across North and South America to test their skills over a three-day period as NASCAR evaluates talent for the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Class of 2017. "This year’s NASCAR Drive for Diversity Combine will feature some incredible talent and we’re excited to watch these young drivers compete," said Dawn Harris, NASCAR director, multicultural development. "NASCAR’s first-class development program has produced the likes of Kyle Larson, Daniel Suárez and Darrell Wallace Jr., so it will be fun to see who rises to the top at New Smyrna." In partnership with Rev Racing, NASCAR Drive for Diversity offers racing opportunities in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series for one full season, providing drivers with equipment, mentoring, and competition experience. "This is an unbelievable opportunity for these up-and-coming drivers; something I am very proud to be a part of for the sixth-consecutive year," said Jefferson Hodges, Rev Racing director of competition. "To see past Drive for Diversity participants compete across all three NASCAR national series speaks volumes for the solid foundation Rev Racing provides these drivers in their budding careers." This year, there are 13 female drivers competing for spots with Rev Racing. Returning this fall is Macy Causey, who at 14 years old was the youngest combine participant in NASCAR Drive for Diversity history in 2015.

Also participating are Hailie Deegan, daughter of Brian Deegan, the most decorated athlete in freestyle motocross history, and Hope Hornish, the niece of 2006 Indianapolis 500 winner and current NASCAR XFINITY Series driver Sam Hornish Jr. Drivers under consideration to return to the team in 2017, but who will not compete at the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Combine, include current NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series drivers: Jairo Avila, Enrique Baca, Collin Cabre, Madeline Crane, Ruben Garcia Jr, and Ali Kern. Collin’s brother, Chase Cabre, is also among the drivers selected to compete in this year’s combine. Driver combine participants will be evaluated on their driving skills, take part in a physical fitness assessment and receive additional training at BethuneCookman University. The NASCAR Drive for Diversity Combine has proven successful in identifying and developing future stars of the sport. Current NASCAR Drive for Diversity members have garnered four top fives and 13 top 10s combined in the NASCAR K&N East and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series this season and are looking to repeat last year’s season-ending victory by Cabre at Dover International Speedway. Program graduate, Kyle Larson, earned his first victory in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this year at Michigan International Speedway. Also this season, fellow graduate and NASCAR XFINITY Series driver Daniel Suárez became the first Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR national series race. Suárez and fellow NASCAR XFINITY driver Darrell Wallace Jr., another NASCAR Drive for Diversity alumnus, are currently competing in the inaugural NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase. Winnipeg native becomes first Canadian female to win a NASCAR-sanctioned race in U.S. By JW Martin Motor Mile Speedway

For Amber Balcaen, victory lane at Motor Mile Speedway was foreign territory. A 24-year-old dirt racer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Balcaen was pursuing an unprecedented feat in her first season of NASCAR-sanctioned competition: to become the first Canadian-born female racer to win a NASCAR-sanctioned race in the United States. Saturday night, Balcaen was in the winner’s circle…and in the record books. “I’m going to be smiling all week,” Balcaen exclaimed. “I’ve dreamed of this all season. Last [race], I thought it was going to happen. But sometimes you have to lose before you can win.” Balcaen had been compiling an impressive resume in her rookie season in the Collision Plus Limited Sportsman division at Motor Mile Speedway, boasting ten top-five finishes in 11 starts. Although the checkered flag remained elusive, a career-best runner-up effort in the division’s most recent contest on August 13th placed Balcaen on the brink of an historic breakthrough. Balcaen started the 50-lap dash third in the seven-car Limited Sportsman field, and after maneuvering past Richard Caldwell’s no. 13 on lap 7, she was tasked with reeling in pole-sitter Karl Budzevski. A five-time winner in 2016, Budzevski was aiming to capitalize on an opportunity to regain ground in the division points race with championship counterpart Scott Lancaster starting sixth per the “Two-Wins-in-a-Row” policy. Separated by 18 points in the track standings, a victory was critical to Budzevski’s diminishing title hopes. After pacing the race uncontested through the opening 27 circuits, Budzevski became embroiled in a spirited duel with Balcaen for the top spot.

From the bottom groove of the .416mile oval, Balcaen methodically edged alongside Budzevski, sparking a two-lap, side-by-side battle for first. Balcaen eclipsed Budzevski as the duo sprinted out of turn two on lap 32, completing the move down the backstretch. It proved to be the pass for the win. “I knew I had to pass him as soon as I could. When I saw the opportunity to make the pass, I did,” Balcaen said. “The no. 26 is a hard competitor, but I was so hungry.” Balcaen constructed a comfortable advantage in the waning circuits, capturing the checkered flag by .508 seconds over Budzevski. Lancaster placed third. “I really wanted the win. If I’d had another five laps, it would have been interesting,” Budzevski stated. “But hey, congratulations to [Amber].” Balcaen is the second female to make history in Motor Mile Speedway’s Limited Sportsman division. In 2015, Julia Landauer became the first female to win a Limited Sportsman track championship at the New River Valley speedplant. Balcaen has been piloting Landauer’s Lee Pulliam Performance entry during her 2016 campaign. And like Landauer, who currently competes in the K&N Pro Series West, Balcaen has unbridled aspirations. “I’ve wanted this win so bad, and I knew that I needed it to be able to make the next step in my career,” explained Balcaen. “I gave up everything back home to come here to try and be a NASCAR driver. Not having the financial backing, being female and Canadian… to be able to put the pieces together and have an awesome crew and to get the sponsorship I needed to come here— it really is a dream come true.”

All of our instructors at First Class are career veteran truck drivers. These instructors have combined on-the-road trucking experience that exceeds two centuries! Demand for our high standard of training and unique perspective on the trucking industry has been fuelling our growth, and we now have eight instructors on staff in Winnipeg and one in our new Brandon location. As well as training locally, we have also done out of town projects as far north as Thompson, Manitoba, but the down fall to out of town training was to find a suitable location for a classroom and transporting our air-board to do proper air-brake training. That’s when my partner, Jeff Esslinger and I, decided to custom build a mobile classroom for training that we can bring almost anywhere in Manitoba.


This 48 foot trailer has a classroom with 8 air-ride truck seat for the students, a fully functional tractor trailer air board system and a state of the art driving simulator. Our passion at First Class is not just developing new drivers for the industry but we have a passion for the trucking industry as a whole. We invite trucking firms to take advantage of our mobile training unit to refresh or enhance their drivers with the use of the driving simulator. We will book and bring the trailer and instructor right to your work place almost anywhere in Manitoba for as many days as needed so you are able to assess your drivers. With the driving simulator, First Class can develop a company specific curriculum to suit the organizations particular needs, including complete orientation programs for newly hired drivers.

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. Dawn Truell Cross Border Services Wooly Mammoth Tusk Found

A Woolly Mammoth Tusk was discovered in a vehicle crossing the Ambassador Bridge. The woman driver was pulled over for a secondary screening, where the CBSA Officers located a bunch of empty jewellery boxes, a large purse with a vast amount of gold jewellery in it and get this, yes a Woolly Mammoth Tusk! The value of the gold jewellery was $100,000.00 and the mammoth tooth, well that is priceless. She was charged with failure to report under the Customs Act, making false statements and evading payment of taxes. An arrest warrant was issued, she managed to escape custody is yet to be found.

Duck Tolling Retriever discovers more than a duck On October 5, 2016, a CBSA Border Guard Dog who was on duty at the time, was found to have a very keen nose; sniffing out 100 kilograms of cocaine that was found hidden in a tractor trailer. This dog was no ordinary dog, he was a beautiful Nova Scotia duck-tolling retriever, only this time he didn’t find a duck, he found cocaine! It was at the Thousand Islands Bridge where a tractor-trailer truck was

pulled over for a secondary screening. Whilst searching the trailer, this shaggy canine officer located four packages that contained 98.8 kilograms of cocaine. The RCMP arrested the driver and the truck was seized. Manifested was a load of paper, what was found was an alarming amount of cocaine. The driver, 49-year-old Zbiigniew Czuprynski who was from Laval, Quebec, was charged with possession of an illegal substance cocaine and smuggling against the Customs Act.


October 21, 2016 at the Pacific Highway Commercial port of entry, a driver headed northbound from the USA to Canada was pulled over for a secondary examination. During this examination, the CBSA officers found a bunch of bricks of cocaine equaling 107.5 kilograms, were piled in with a manifested shipment of rice. The RCMP arrested the driver and seized the truck and drugs.
