We were seriously impressed with the results from a huge spooky feature editorial by TAZ (page 38) and also an incredible DEMON BALLERINA (page 32) Some of the images look so real, you have to pinch yourself to make sure you're not dreaming (well, having a nightmare.) Beware not to read this issue alone! So now that HALLOWEEN is over, its time to plan for our Christmas Special. As you can tell everyone here at CT just love holidays, maybe a bit too much.

OPHELIA by Sarah-Jane Roberts

Our inspiration for this shoot came from the character Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet and how by being rejected by Hamlet, she loses her mind and drowns herself. Was it really the rejection that did that or did she do that to herself? I always believed her character was haunted余 haunted by her own desperation, her own doubts and inner demons. Although we know that she takes her own life, we are always lead to believe she fell into the water, her clothes, heavy, had pulled her under. "When down her weedy trophies and herself Fell in the weeping brook. Her clothes spread wide余 And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up." "Till that her garments, heavy with their drink, Pull'd the poor wretch from her melodious lay To muddy death." It's the whole point of being so far removed from yourself that I wanted to portray, when Ophelia becomes unrecognisable, driven by madness, separated from rational thought and reality. For this shoot it was important for us to be able to play out through the images 'her decline through her own haunting'. Where you could see the fragile pieces of her sanity unravelling very quickly and portray them in not so much of a 'I'm going to talk to myself and rock for a bit' but in a more visually expressive and much scarier way. The styling for the shoot really helped bring it together. Model 'The Fanny Adams' took a wedding dress I had and restyled it, also making a floral headpiece. Her hair was styled by Sam Warner. We thought about having an elaborate style which could be taken down but we decided to keep all the styling very simple so that we could use the surroundings and the expressiveness of The Fanny Adam's modelling to make the images what they are. Make up was by Claire Elliott of Doll Face Beauty. Claire was able to give us a simple yet effective look that transitioned from fair maiden to screaming madness and it worked very well for this shoot.

Halloween has always been my favourite time of year so a dark Halloween inspired shoot was something I definitely had to pursue.

I have been lucky enough to work with Jeff Mood Photography a couple of times prior to this shoot and felt like he was, without a doubt, the best man for the job. I pitched the idea to Jeff and was thrilled when he got as excited as me and found time in his busy schedule to help me bring this concept to life. Bouncing off each other's creativity we pieced the shoot together in minimal timing and achieved what I feel is a fantastic set of images.

Photographer Jeff mood photography Model/HMUA Tasha-Leigh Alt Model

The shoot itself was incredibly fun. The location was absolute perfection - even with failing attempts at dodging the stings and scratches from all the brambles - I feel it made the shot. After a few hours of slipping and sliding through the muddy Limeworks we were so excited about the shots and couldn't wait to see the finished product. We even decided to commemorate with a few crazy Polaroid selfies of me and Jeff. It was only upon leaving the shoot and reaching a mirror did I realise just how much we achieved the wildly dreadlocked look we were going for. With tree branches and wind participating heavily.

When Jeff and I released the first image from the set I was incredibly nervous about how people would respond. The main reason being that the theme is so different to the fashion image people are used to seeing me as. However, we received such positive feedback that I decided to submit the set for publication and when CT Magazine snapped it up, we were truly overwhelmed. This shoot has been one of my absolute favourites and I'd like to say a special thank you to Jeff Mood Photography for all the time and hard work he put in. Also to CT Magazine for being so supportive. This is most definitely one shoot I will never forget. I hope everyone enjoys viewing these images as much as we enjoyed creating them. Happy Halloween!

Halloween ‐ 2 Day Scareventure Photography by Taz | www.fb.com/djtazie

Taz (the man behind the shoot)

I started off doing photography as a bit of fun. I had the idea at the time to do what I call 'themed shoots' for models who wanted to do fun shoots in a group, or for new models who wanted to get involved in a shoot but didn't know where to start.

I threw together a basic website that let people sign up for various different themes, but the Halloween style tends to be one of the most popular of all. I normally get people signing up three months before Halloween and I start the planning, scouting and organising for the shoot then. Quite a lot of work goes into these shoots, as I first throw out a few castings, then once a few sign up, I go and scout locations. It can take a few days finding a place, doing a walk around to see where can be used and if everything is ok, and then I usually take a few quick snaps to check on the laptop to judge how many people can be used on set.

Halloween needs to have a creepy look so usually derelict housing or abandoned locations work best. Once we have the location, the next step is to pick dates. Unfortunately we can never please everyone with dates as we had 65 models signing up for the Halloween shoot this year and there are always a few who can’t make it, so they're the first draft to be narrowed down. It's then a matter of trying to organise makeup people, hair people and assistants who are available on those dates, and the way I did it this year was to give the makeup artists a login page so that they could pick the models they wanted to work with. From there, we built a list of models for each day, then contacted them to see who was available and after a little bit of chopping and changing, we came up with the final list. Once that's sorted I send email after email (sorry guys, I know I send too much info) covering almost every detail I can think of, from info about the location (I keep the actual location private until the day), to what to bring, suggestions on what you may need, ideas on looks, even down to letting people know I’ll have internet on site. Once all of this is set in motion, I start to get excited about the shoot days as it's all really building up for me and the preparation is part of the fun.

Day One

Location North County Dublin MUA Joanne Collins, Cathriona McGann, Naomi Cormack, Amy Hutch Hair Jennifer McNeill Models Jennifer Traynor, Dee Nolan, Nicole Beck, Jen Rojas, Khloe Devlin, Shaleen Chadha, Zoe Hamilton, Noel Gannon, Kelsey Flood, Shanice Hitchings, Paddy Fitzpatrick and Cathriona McGann Videographer Jay Alexis

Day One saw videographer, Jay Alexis, join us for the day, so we all met in Dublin City, piled into cars and convoyed our way to the shoot location. Once unloaded, we found a location for doing the makeup, put some on music on the portable amp to get people in the mood, threw on a few portable lights and got started with everything. I checked out the locations to make sure everything was still ok as makeup was getting sorted and came back an hour later to a few completed models and a few almost done, and anyone who was available was given a few cups of cola and ate some food. 'Selfies' were going off all over the place which usually means the models love their makeup and hair. It was at this point that we had a visit from a man in a glowing yellow vest telling us that we couldn't use the building we were in for makeup and we were moved on. It put a slight damper on the day since we hadn't got any photos yet, but no one wanted to cause any trouble, so we packed up and moved out as requested without any problems. We relocated to a public area where the makeup was finished, we then started shooting in the forest which turned out to be quite creepy in the end and worked out very well! As we moved through the area, we found an old abandoned house, so I decided to pop in there for a few photos as well and I have to say, it was scary as hell in there - even in a big group! Models Shanice Hitchings, Cathriona McGann, Noel Gannon

Model Dee Nolan

The final section for the photos was in an old graveyard. Even though it was a previously unused location at this stage, I still wanted to make sure that we were in and out as quickly as possible, as I realise that these areas can be quite sensitive. So I urged everyone to have respect for the location, did a quick check to make sure no one was in there, then we all popped in, got a few pics and we were back out again as quickly and respectfully as possible (yes, yes... while dressed in Halloween gear... but you know what I mean.)

Model Jennifer Traynor So that was a rap for Day One! Though I believe some of the models had a bit more fun in the cars on the way home; it being quite a few weeks before Halloween, passers-by can be somewhat taken aback when they see that makeup on models. Model Shaleen Chadha

Day Two

Location County Kildare Barracks Makeup Amy Hutch and Jennifer McNeill Hair Jennifer McNeill Models Julie Slaughter, Megan O Brien, Elaine Lynch, Jessica Murphy, Saoirse Timmons, Erica McMahon, Rowena Kenny, Aoife McGrath, Ciara Whelan, Rose Mesquita, Amy Hutch, Kamlesh Mulloo Day Two was a week later and in a different location, so again we met in Dublin City and made our way to the location, which was a 40 minute drive away. This location I had used before, so I knew the ins and outs of it. I had a plan ready and got everyone into the abandoned site (over a small wall) early in the day, and again without disturbing anyone. Once on location we stayed there, as it’s a huge area and out of view of everyone, so again the makeup artists got to work on the models. We were short two makeup artists on the day, so the work the girls did on Day Two has to be commended as they had twice the amount of models expected each, and still did a fantastic job on everyone!

Just to lighten the mood, I had the laptop out (full mobile internet connection) and was snapping a few photos behind the scenes and letting them come up on screen as I took them - it creates a bit of fun for everyone and is a great talking point for those who don’t know each other. Top : Jessica Murphy, Rose Mesquita, Ciara Whelan, Erica McMahon, Rowena Kenny, Amy Hutch, Elaine Lynch, Megan O Brien Bottom : Saoirse Timmons, Kamlesh Mulloo, Julie Slaughter, Aoife McGrath

I knew one of the models had to go early, so I took herself and a few others who were ready away early and got a few shots with them. The guardian of one of the models who had come with us on the day (Sam O Brien) was handed my spare camera so she could help out with the snaps, which I think she enjoyed quite a bit as it made her part of the team instead of just an observer. Getting back to the main group, most of the models were almost ready, so we had a few soft drinks and a bit of food and after that, the shooting started. We wandered around the huge selection of abandoned rooms in several buildings, finding interesting spots to take pics and got loads of shots of it all. Some kids wandered in at one stage and I had to call and let them know we were doing a Halloween themed shoot so as not to scare the life out of them if they stumbled into a room we were shooting in! Shot after shot turned out well with models, muas and newly recruited photographers, all shouting out locations and ideas for pictures in abundance.

Laughs were had, poses were struck, photos were taken and fun was had by all, even on a dull dreary day. As the darkness started to descend we decided we had enough photos.

Models Megan O Brien, Jessica Murphy, Amy Hutch, Elaine Lynch, Julie Slaughter, Rowena Kenny, Erica McMahon, Saoirse Timmons, Aoife McGrath, Kamlesh Mulloo, Ciara Whelan, Rose Mesquita It was time to pack up and head home, so we all went back to our temporary HQ, everyone got changed and back out to the cars and then home. Two good days completed, and just the editing to be done after that. I had thousands of photos to choose from, and still have a few to edit, but I’m delighted with how quite a lot of them turned out, and how we all had fun on the locations. I have since got a few heartfelt messages from some of the models, thanking me for the day which really makes everything worthwhile. More so than any end result, a smile on someone’s face is worth more than anything and it reminds me of why I do go to so much effort and why I like doing projects like this even though there is zero financial gain in it for me. Bring on my next projects and let’s keep the fun and photos going!

The Team behind the Magic Joanne Collins : Makeup Artist I've been working with Taz for over 2 years now and we always have a bit of fun on these types of photoshoots. The pictures come out well, but it’s the laughs and jokes on the shoots that make it so much fun. I love the creativity, the style of the makeup. I love how it makes people feel about themselves when they see it on. It’s therapeutic for me and once I start, it totally relaxes me; as well as giving me a sense of accomplishment! I got my ideas from the internet and also from television programs, but I put my own twist on the looks. It’s amusing to see a gang of people you did makeup on walking along a forest path and watching how people react to them, especially since we do the shoot a few weeks prior to Halloween and that makeup isn’t expected.

Amy Hutch : Makeup Artist and Model I got into makeup properly last year after I added 'Taz Photos' on a social media site. He kindly invited me up to do make up for a shoot in June 2014 and off it shot from there. My ideas on the 2014 Halloween Shoot were based around 'childhood with a twist'. I created quite a few characters, including 'Evil Clown', 'Alice in Thunderland' and 'Beauty As a Beast'.

Model Amy Hutch

This shoot was very different to others I've participated in, from the location, the atmosphere, to the road trip to our secret locations. Halloween is my favourite occasion by far. I had so much fun creating these looks and meeting new people. If there's one thing I brought away from this, is that behind the scenes takes a LOT. Not everything is glitz and glamour, more like gore and horror in this case! Fortunately, on this shoot, we had no models with diva dramatics (and some really can have that on shoots) which made it really easy to work in the time frames allocated to makeup. It really was a great experience and I'm already looking forward to taking part next year!

41

Jennifer McNeill : Hair & Makeup Artist I'm a qualified makeup artist with a passion and love regarding makeup. My experience on the shoot was amazing, I got to share my creative talents in makeup and hair whilst sharing my makeup tips as well as learning different skills from some of the other excellent makeup artists on site. I feel that I have gained more confidence from being able to share my own ideas with other hair and makeup people. My aim was to master being able to work under pressure and to be able to take pride in my makeup and/or hairstyles because I could see they brought great satisfaction to the models and therefore to myself. I loved being able to work with an excellent photographer who knowledgeably guided me throughout the shoot, and with models who were able to bring my creations to life in the photographs. I'm happy to say I've learnt a lot, gained so much experience and met new people while enjoying what I feel I do best.

Model Kesley Flood

Kelsey Flood : Model This was the first time I had done a Halloween shoot, so I really wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about looking gruesome... I was used to the more glamorous side of modelling, but I was hugely surprised at how much I enjoyed it and how well we all worked together. The location was just perfect. It was so creepy, even though it was a bit of a task to even get there, it was well worth it when we did. We got some fantastic shots and had plenty of laughs along the way. I would do again in a heartbeat.

Erica McMahon : Model The atmosphere on set was welcoming for all of the models. The team were very patient and just brilliant at what they do. Taz is an inventive photographer, with some amazing ideas. The makeup artists ideas were creative and fun and every model's costume fitted the theme perfectly! Overall it was an incredible experience. I would recommend doing a Halloween shoot to anyone thinking about getting into modelling, as it’s an easy and fun shoot to get started on. Nicole Beck : Model My experience of the Halloween themed photoshoot was unforgettable. I was a little nervous at the start but the work environment and friendly people made the day a blast. Considering everyone worked hard throughout the day, the ambience remained relaxed and chill. I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend a corn syrup drenched Saturday!

Dee Nolan : Model I first saw the Halloween shoot last year on Taz's page and thought it looked amazing. I signed up this year and was over the moon to be picked for it. I was a bit nervous as I'd never done a location shoot before, but I had so much fun on the day and met so many great people. We had such a brilliant team working with us! Make up by Joanne Collins (on myself) was perfect as always and I can't recommend her enough. Jennifer was doing all the hairstyles using loads of hairspray, fake spiders and cobwebs. And of course the main man, Taz who was behind the camera. We were all dressed as zombies. We were covered in blood and Taz found some great locations for these pictures. They turned out just as spooky as the building we were in, which is pretty spooky! Overall, it was just a fun filled day. A great experience, and I'm delighted to have a few pictures and a super creepy video by the very talented Jay Alexis. I would do this type of shoot again in a heartbeat. Great credit to everyone involved.

Model Dee Nolan

Jessica Murphy : Model I always love doing themed photoshoots, there's always a great atmosphere on set. Everyone is always sharing creative ideas and sharing jokes and laughs. The Halloween shoot was so much fun. The makeup and hair turned out amazing. The location was so scary, but it turned out great in the photos! The Halloween photoshoot was such a fun experience, and I got to meet some amazing people. It was great to be a part of the whole process!

Model Rowena Kenny, Ciara Whelan, Julie Slaughter, Jessica Murphy, Aoife McGrath

Samantha O Brien (Parent & Photographer) Being the mother of one of the models, Megan, I went with my daughter to her Halloween shoot, as it was her first time trying a photoshoot and being your typical worried mother, I wanted to have a look for myself and make sure everything was safe and ok.

As it turned out I had nothing to worry about. All the models were very easy to get along with, Taz (the photographer) was there, making sure everyone was looked after. The makeup artists were taking care of the models as they went, instead of sitting around as I had expected. I was handed a spare camera and got involved in the shoot myself by snapping a few pics too, which made the whole day a lot more fun. The creepy atmosphere of the location just enhanced the makeup transformation of the beautiful girls and guys into freaky and scary monsters. My daughter was smiling for days after it. She loved it and we both would love to do it all again.

43

Shaleen Chadha : Model I have been modelling since the start of 2014. I always wanted to experience the modelling world, since I come from a scientific background but it was tricky to make contacts with people in the industry. Taz was one of my initial contacts with whom I had spoken through Facebook a number of times. However, I had never worked with Taz until the Halloween group shoot. I decided to sign up for this shoot as it was something entirely different from what I am used to doing. I was pleased to know that I had been selected for the shoot and could not wait for the gory shots it would supply me with for my portfolio! A typical shoot requires a set location, hours of make-up and hours of shooting. The schedule is normally laid out in advance. What I loved about this shoot was that the location was so large that we had the luxury of exploring many different settings. I had never shot in an abandoned building before, it was completely deserted and with no power supply! It was truly a unique shoot. Doing make-up standing up in the middle of a derelict building is not something you have to do at your typical shoot. The combination of the fantastic people I was working with, along with the uncertainties of the day really made for an exciting shoot. Besides the close call with the security guard at one location, we managed to take some amazing shots and experience some chilling moments! I would definitely be up for another shoot like this. If you have the right team of people, you can really make anything work! Jen Rojas : Model It was my first time joining a Halloween themed photoshoot and I must say, I had a blast! I had great fun being transformed into a creature from everyone's worst nightmare. The location was perfect for the theme; eerie, creepy and it definitely sent shivers down my spine! All the people involved were really fun to work with. There were no awkward moments, even though most of us had just met for the first time on the shoot. Taz was very accommodating and made everyone comfortable throughout the day. Thank you, Taz Photos! It was an unforgettable and amazing experience! Rowena Kenny : Model I thought the shoot was great fun. It was my first photo-shoot and I felt absolutely no pressure from the models, makeup artists or Taz. It was very easy going and I felt this atmosphere brought out the best in everyone. The location was very cool, you could feel the history of the place seeping through the walls, it really helped you get into character. I thought Taz was great, I was wondering how I was going to feel with a photographer taking pictures of me but I was made to feel so comfortable and welcomed. Paddy Fitzpatrick (Model) It was my first time being involved in a themed shoot, and I thought the day went great. I felt it was a spectacular location, wonderfully creepy... just what I love! I think the shoot was a great success, with plenty of talented people involved from make up, to hair, to the man himself taking the pictures. Everyone was well looked after and we all worked great as a team.

Shanice Hitchings : Model It was a great day from start to finish. I met some great people and had a laugh. The buildings were very spooky, which made it even better for the models to get into the right mood. The team on hair and makeup have an amazing talent and our photographer Taz is brilliant for organising the whole day and delivering great shots. Julie Slaughter : Model I'm Julie Slaughter, I'm 21 and I'm from Dublin. And I must say, doing a Halloween photoshoot is amazing! It’s so creative and fun to be involved in a project like it. My first shoot was with Taz on last year’s Halloween shoot, so I couldn't wait to get involved again this time round. The team are very generous and help you with anything you need on the day and they all make you feel comfortable. We have a good laugh with all of the other models and getting to meet new people is great. Sometimes you end up staying in contact with each other and become good friends. All in all, I love the experience with all shoots but especially the Halloween one as it's just an amazing day from start to finish. Kamlesh Mulloo : Model I had a great day that day! I have to start by saying that the photographer and team were great. I was just expecting a few basic Halloween pictures but it turned out to be a shoot to remember. Everybody was friendly and it was a good experience to see their makeup and hair being done. The makeup artists did an outstanding job. The location was amazing and naturally spooky to begin with! The pictures are all spellbinding. It's like a mix of beauty and fashion but in the horror world. The team had thought of the models, by providing some snacks and drinks and little gestures like this help and means SO much. Thank you again to all of the team for the memorable Halloween shoot and I hope everyone enjoys the photos. Aoife McGrath : Model This Halloween photoshoot has to be my favourite modelling experience so far. I was a little apprehensive at the start, as one of my eyes was covered, my shoes were quite high and there was a lot of rubble on the ground, but I got used to it and it was truly an amazing experience. All the people I worked with were very friendly and quite funny so that added to the whole experience. I'm so impressed with how the final photos turned out as well which of course is a total bonus to that day! It's definitely a day I won't forget for a while!
