Comment Vaccine Confidence Boosts Travel Industry Welcome to 2021, and the first edition of the Group Travel Today Magazine, I hope you are all safe and well. We have started the year off with a bang, the roll-out of the vaccines is going fantastically well, and it won’t be long before all the age-related and those medically vulnerable to this awful disease are protected I had previously mentioned the awesome job our NHS and Key workers were carrying out at the height of the first wave, who knew they would be expected to cope with even more pressures and working conditions that would test the best of us, but of course, I say with immense pride they have once again risen to the challenge. It seems the news of the vaccine rollout has (excuse the pun) injected a surge of bookings for this year, holiday companies are reporting a threefold rise in bookings for this summer driven by a boom in demand from older travellers, the availability of vaccines is giving people the confidence to book trips. Many coach and tour operators working in the UK have seen an increase of 185% in bookings for Spring and Summer compared to the same period last year, and Tui say that 50% of online bookings were in

Holiday rush has started in the South West Retired people in the South West have been booking holidays for later in the year in large numbers after receiving their vaccinations, according to the region’s leading coach operator Bakers Dolphin. Confidence is returning that the tourism market will bounce back after Easter with online and telephone bookings rocketing in the last week. Amanda Harrington, Sales and Marketing Director for Bakers Dolphin said: “It seems as if the first thing people do when they return home after receiving the Covid-19 protection is to start booking a holiday to look forward to. “We are also getting so many requests for day
excursions that that we are rushing out a special Day’s Out brochure in the next few weeks with ideas for trips to Stately Homes, gardens, museums and great scenery. Bookings are very strong for resorts in Cornwall and the South West and also for Scotland. “We are finding they are less strong for overseas, but people are keen to get into Italy, Spain and Austria on tours as soon as the regulations allow.” Since last March Bakers Dolphin has found that people are willing to book ahead and then change if necessary or have a refund when circumstances dictate. They know their money is safe as Bakers Dolphin is a bonded company, and are
flexible with a choice of money back, re-booking or refund vouchers when tours have been cancelled due to restrictions. The coach operators are now expecting 2021 to be a bumper year for holidays once the vaccine roll-out is completed and Government ends all restrictions. Amanda Harrington said: “The strongest take-up is for
holidays in July, August and beyond but we still have people keen to go away at Easter if they possibly can.” Bakers Dolphin prefer bookings to be made through their website: www.bakersdolphin.com but telephone bookings are still being taken by staff working from home.

Tom van der Leij is an Amsterdam born and raised photographer, travel editor and travel consultant. Tom's first loves are photography and traveling, and his vivid photos and stories are widely published in diverse travel magazines. Every fall and winter, he organizes private adventurous trips for couples and families to South Africa— his second homeland. He also offers photography workshops and photoshoots in and around Amsterdam, including in the Dutch tulip fields. See: tomvanderleij.com In 2013, Tom co-founded Toms Travel Tours, a professional high-quality private guiding company based in Amsterdam. The company organizes custommade tours throughout The Netherlands and Belgium. Among the many tour options, travellers can spend a couple of hours with an art historian in one of the main museums, cycle around greater Amsterdam and find off-the-beaten-track spots, explore the genuine Dutch countryside, or go on a unique mud walk.
See:www.tomstraveltours.com
Quotes: “I’m a born and raised Amsterdammer. While I love to travel to exotic locations abroad, I also deeply appreciate the small things in my own little country. I love to show my foreign guests the beauty of Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands.” “It doesn’t sound appealing to many people: walking for hours in mud up to your knees to a distant island. But every person I know that has ever done it agrees that it’s the best Dutch nature activity there is. It almost feels like you’re playing God; walking over the bottom of the sea, the dry Wadden Sea (UNESCO world heritage site) to a beautiful island in the north.”
What to expect on a mud tour?

What is a mud walk? It’s basically as it sounds. You walk from a location on or near the Dutch mainland across the Wadden Sea at low tide to a point on the other side of the sea, which can either be an island shore or a boat that takes you to the final destination.
There are different mud walk routes and they all start in the northern province of Friesland and Groningen. My favourite route is to Ameland island where you walk from the Dutch mainland to the island. You need to be between 1465 years old, in good physical condition, able to walk in thick (sometimes slippery!) mud for approximately 4 to 5 hours. You need special surf shoes to protect your feet against the shells on the bottom. The season runs from the end of May until the end of September. We can also do shorter routes of about 2-3 hours, possibly as a day tour from Amsterdam –

Want to join a special long mud walk to Schiermonnikoog from 18-20 June 2021? This island does not allow cars, has the widest beaches of Europe and is a national park; it’s considered the most beautiful nature area of The Netherlands. You will stay in a Fawlty Towers look-a-like hotel; nothing pretentious, but definitely a pleasant atmosphere. For June, there are a limited number of places available. To plan a mud walk for another time period, please get in touch. Something else? You can also book a family trip with Toms Travel Tours to the north, focussing on Friesland, Schiermonnikoog and the North Holland province—without the mud walk! www.mudwalks.com Contact: reservations@tomstraveltours.com All pictures copyright Tom van der Leij

AGTO MATTERS
Group Travel Today
How safe is your money? The vaccination programme is now well under way, and perhaps you’re considering booking a holiday for your group for later in the year. But be careful. As Wendy Hartley-Scarff, chief executive of the Association of Group Travel Organisers (AGTO) reveals, there’s an industry issue that could result in your money being lost. I think we’ve all been looking into our crystal balls over recent weeks. Will that trip that was postponed from 2020 be able to operate? What does the vaccination programme mean for us? Will the increase in demand for domestic holidays mean that our
usual hotels simply won’t have the capacity as they quite rightly capture every last benefit of the staycation spike? The answer of course, to almost all the questions being asked, is that we simply don’t know. The need to balance the need for staying safe against the need for businesses to reopen is a decision I feel we’re all pleased we don’t have to take. However, as we do keep an eye on the news, keen to spot if the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter, there are some things we can be certain of. There are some actions that you can take now, indeed, should be taking now. Back in January, Shearings, now a brand owned by Leger Holidays, announced it was transferring to a trust account customer protection model. That means that a customer’s payment is stored in an independently-operated trust account until after the holiday has taken
place. It enables a refund to be arranged quickly if the holiday does not go ahead for any reason. In making the move, Shearings joins a growing number of travel companies choosing the trust account method of customer protection. Commenting at the time, a Shearings spokesperson said; “By switching to a secure trust account we cannot touch our customers’ money until after their holiday. We can’t use it, for example, to prepay suppliers.” To my mind that’s a really positive move, bolstering people’s confidence in travelling again at a time when that confidence has been severely dented. For most people, knowing how your money is protected isn’t important. What is important though is knowing that it is protected, and that the tour operator you choose has financial protection in case the worst should happen.
Simple enough, you might think. The information will be on the operator’s website. Reputable tour operators, knowing that you need financial peace of mind should the worst happen, have brought the wording about financial protection for customers’ money from the pages of small print to the home page. But here’s the rub. Not every tour operator has done that. It has become apparent whilst looking into this area that there are some operators, and indeed not small operators but major names in the industry, who seem unusually reticent to reveal what process is in place to ensure your money is protected. I would take this opportunity to urge these operators to get this sorted and to publish the steps they have taken to protect your money! But they’re not alone. So, if you’re really concerned that the money you pay to a tour operator, your members’ money, is really protected, I want to encourage you to check to see who the trust account, or bonded account, is with. We all need confidence that travel will be safe. We also need reassurance that our money will be safe. Tour operators need to play their part! www.agto.co.uk
Torquay in Devon is likely to be a popular destination once group travel opens up again. But if you use a tour operator, make sure your group’s money is protected.

Happy New Year Its August Bank Holiday! In Ethiopia the current year is 2014 , Ethiopia maintains its own calendar, which, due to a difference in the perceived date of the Annunciation (the proclamation of the birth of Christ), is seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar (which is used as standard across most of the world). In Ethiopia, the new year also begins on either August 29 or August 30.
How Lazy Are We? You’re never more than 30 steps away from a bin in Disneyland. The story goes that Walt Disney used to watch visitors in the park and see how many steps they took before littering, as a result, a litter bin is never more than 30 steps away in any Disney park. Another of Walt’s lesser-known Disneyland additions was the creation of a secret bar hidden inside the park, which at the time was alcohol free, it was here he used to entertain personal guests and sponsors. The speakeasy-style venue, located behind a large door in the New Orleans Square section of the park now runs as a private members club with an annual membership fee of $10,000.

Despite Stuart working from home, he secured a booking at Thorseby Hall for November and a full refund was not only authorised but back in the Club’s bank account by 6th January. It is not surprising that every single person asked me to take a deposit for the new booking before refunding the remainder. Excellent service.

With the announcement of the vaccine, and many of my members already receiving theirs, things can only get better for travel in 2021. Certainly my members think so for, as I write, they are sending in deposits for a tour to Puglia in September through Success Tours. The numbers are well down on the 100 that originally booked over two separate tours but some of the problem is not health or fear of travelling, but all the other rescheduled holidays and cruises from 2020. Everyone is longing for something to look forward to and miss the bimonthly socials when up to 200 of our 460 strong membership meet, and the companionship of friends and fellow members on our day trips and holidays. Ken is missing his railway and historic transport meetings and his involvement in Leicester’s Tram Depot, especially on public open days. We are due to go to Cornwall at the end of April and to Northern Ireland at the end of May beginning of June. Both are 2020 reschedulings and we are all on tenterhooks hoping that we can go. We did book a sociallydistanced Sonning Mill Theatre trip to hear a concert version of the Doris Day Story with Sally Hughes, the MD, singing all our favourite songs from her career in films. But it wasn’t to be. Now we are just hoping that our May trip to Macclesfield Silk Museum and Paradise Mill will go ahead. A tour of Essex in August is in the balance at present, as some venues in the itinerary cannot be confirmed, as groups are not yet allowed to book. October sees another rescheduled tour, this time to Bath but we were able to tweak the itinerary and include a one-way trip on the Kennet Canal. We had quite a few extra bookings on all these tours when the new dates were announced. IF the April and May tours have to be cancelled I don’t know whether there will be the will to reschedule yet again; 2022 is already looking
contracted in early May 2022 just awaiting re-costing when the Island re-opens to visitors. Our two tours of the Imagna Valley, Italy, which were cancelled in June 2020 are already looking good to go in June 2022 with members putting their names down against a preferred date. It could be that we will get the full 100 people booking again. For July or August we are awaiting news re a German City break for which we had already scheduled a presentation by the Tour Operator, but sadly didn’t get to the booking stage. Then in September a hotel has been contracted in Scotland with a basic itinerary agreed with the tour operator ready to fine tune in
I have seen that some groups have been out and about during 2020. My members, whilst wishing they could do the same, were less enthusiastic when it came to booking anything and the inputting of all the refunds to member’s bank accounts isn’t top of my list for a fun few days either. I am longing to get to the time where I can confidently start booking day trips again. My screen saver has pictures from all the holidays and outings we have done over the last 10 years scrolling in no particular order. The nostalgia they evoke is tangible. I am sharing a few of those photographs with you, some of which may remind you of holidays you yourself may have taken with your group. I hope that by the time you read this article the glimmer of light has become a large beacon at the end of the tunnel and we are all able to do more than just dream of travel.

On the ride in from the airport, horses give way to tractors, give way to trucks, give way to trains and sleek trams. Zagreb is more than a European capital. It’s not just a taste of the East in the West. It’s a mix of peoples, styles, ideologies, and resilience. Zagreb isn’t just a destination, it’s a living history lesson with an eye to the future. Almost a thousand years to experience, and you’ve forty minutes from clearing airport customs to come to terms with those exceptional contrasts. In 2020 the day before Britain went into lockdown, Zagreb’s million-plus inhabitants saw the indomitable Mount Medvednica moved by that early morning earthquake. It’s not the first time the city’s northern guardian has trembled. Keep your eyes open, you’ll see the evidence. Pre-1964 buildings, erected prior to stiff new codes, suffered disproportionately. So, while those southern suburbs are largely untouched, there are buildings in the centre that will take a while to repair. Pre-1964
describes much of Zagreb’s architectural attraction. Damage there was too notable buildings: the cathedral among them, which lost a spire. Walk around today and, though there are gables and pediments still to be repaired, Zagreb remains, restored, reborn. It’s not only nature that’s periodically assaulted Zagreb. There once were guards on the Western Gates, where now there are retail parks. The very name of the boulevard that crosses the Savo River Ljubljanska Avenija - is a reminder that the neighbouring Slovenian capital is little more than cavalry charge away. Not ancient history either: the 1991 border dispute was very real indeed.
damaged, none of which actually fell down. If you’re up for walking, the city centre is easily negotiated.
Coach access is good, and there is a selection of good hotels within reach of the rather functional central bus station not really a photo op. Nearby, the rather grander railway station famously exhibits a historic steam locomotive out front - perfect group selfie material.

says getting lost is not a problem. “You can always stop and ask directions in the labyrinth of streets. You will be delighted by the hospitality of the people in Zagreb.” Zagreb’s old town developed as two individual hilltop communities side by side, their relationship wasn’t always harmonious either, indeed Kaptol and Gradec did not integrate for centuries. Kaptol is where the clergy was based, the main landmark is Zagreb Cathedral, one of the cities first buildings which was devastated by the Mongols in the 13thcentury and then further damaged by a 19th-century earthquake, you can still see the remains of the Cathedral’s fortifications built during the Ottoman wars. Down the hill, the influence of Vienna is clear to see, 19th-
century pavilions and manicured gardens that would rival those of Prague or Budapest. This is an ideal place to while away the hours in one of the lovely cafes, or put your glad rags and paint the town red as it has a great reputation for buzzing nightlife.
pavilion, the national library, and the academy of science and arts. Not bad for a public park.
The compact centre is easily explored on foot. In fact, both cities are easily explored. Zagreb owes its long heritage to the amalgamation of medieval Gradec and Kaptol, back when Zagreb was a royal imperial capital, actually: two royal imperial capitals. They were not good neighbours, and didn’t resolve their differences until 1850, when a dividing wall was demolished and replaced by the celebratory avenues that bound Pfaff’s squares, adorned by the golden-coloured arts

The Museum of Broken Relationships
By far the biggest settlement in Croatia, Zagreb has the lion’s share of the country’s cultural collections. Many are worthy, most are interesting, one is unique. The Museum of Broken Relationships is perhaps the most unusual. It pretty much does what it purports to do. If only it were situated on the Boulevard of Broken Dreams.
Rather unusually dedicated to failed love relationships. Its exhibits include personal objects left over from former lovers, accompanied by brief descriptions, it began life as a touring collection of donated items But now has found a permanent location in Zagreb. In 2017, the museum had more than 100,000 lovelorn visitors, making it the 11th most visited museum in Croatia.
Closer to Heaven, the short and steep funicular will glide you to the upper town, where the Natural History Museum counts among its prized possessions: the world’s first documented meteorite. In a town that’s been through two of Europe’s most severe quakes, it’s just one more rock, damaged not destroyed, that fell to Earth.
This museum was established in 1907 by the Association of the Brethren of the Croatian Dragon.Situated in a restored monumental complex of the former Convent of the Poor Clares, of 1650. The Museum deals with subjects from the cultural, artistic, economic and political history of the city

Picture Perfect Petworth
Inspired by the Baroque palaces of Europe and nestled in the South Downs, Petworth House displays one of the finest art collections in the care of the National Trust. Petworth House is an extraordinary and surprising place created by just one family over 900 years. The 17th-century building visitors can see today comprises grand state rooms, which form the centrepiece of the visit. Designed to display the taste, lifestyle and artistic patronage of generations of Percys, Seymours and Wyndhams, the state rooms offer an expanse of paintings and sculpture, including major works by artists such as Van Dyck, Turner, Reynolds and Gainsborough. A particular highlight is the earliest English globe in existence, dating back to 1592. This remarkable collection reflects a journey of survival and success through the Tudor Reformation, the Gunpowder Plot, the Napoleonic Wars and the consolidation of the British Empire. Petworth was described as ‘that house of art’ by the famous painter John
Constable when he visited in 1834. It is indeed still best known for its art collection, including twenty paintings by JMW Turner, as well as its outstanding carvings by Grinling Gibbons and, of course, one of Capability Brown’s most beautiful and important landscape parks.

The landscape surrounding Petworth gives every impression of being totally natural; in reality, nothing is further from the truth. The park and garden were transformed in the 1750s and early 1760s by the landscape architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Visitors can explore the historic park at Petworth, wander in the footsteps of artists, encounter our majestic herd of deer and sweep away the cobwebs with our walking trails. You’ll find something to stop and admire wherever you walk. As well as the magnificent 700 acre deer park there is the beautiful Pleasure Garden, designed to inspire a range of emotions as you stroll by the Doric temple and the Ionic Rotunda, with dense shrubbery and trees giving the impression of

10 - Heart of England Welcome to the spring edition of the Great Days Out Guide, it's fair to say that we have seen and heard from a large number of experts, virologists, immunologists, psychologists and psychiatrists in the past 12 months. One thing that they have all agreed on is the absolute need to ensure that the nation's mental health is of paramount importance indeed to that end even during the most severe of lockdown measures we have been encouraged to take exercise and to form social bubbles to keep us all sane, even the most Victor Meldrews like amongst us are social creatures at heart. We're now in the home stretch, and very soon we will be able to get out and about and do what we love
doing best with those we know the most, here we have a fabulous selection of great outdoor and impressive indoor attractions for you to peruse and plan to visit. I'm sure that it won't be too long and I'm sure he won't mind before we're saying Professor Chris.. what's his name...

North East The North East has spawned brilliant people, inventions and innovations, you would be well advised to go and investigate, you’ll be amazed at the plethera of things to do and see. Bamburgh The King of Castles And it truly is! Perched atop a rocky outcrop at the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Bamburgh Castle reigns supreme over the surrounding landscape and seascape. With outstanding views landward to the Cheviot Hills and seaward to the Farne Islands and Lindisfarne it offers a feast for the eyes to behold. As for Englishness, there’s been something here from the time of the Anglo-Saxons, it was from here that Christianity spread throughout the North of England, it’s because of here that Lindisfarne is now known as the Holy Island. It was the first castle in England to be besieged by canon fire, it was home to the world’s first Coastguard station and the development of the first ever lifeboat. Finally bought in 1864 for £8000 it was restored as the quintessential English castle by one of England’s greatest inventors and philanthropists, 1st Lord Armstrong. Now groups can explore the State Rooms, discovering thousands of items in a collection containing furniture, porcelain, works of art, arms and armour. A separate museum tells the story of 1st Lord Armstrong and contains fascinating Aviation artefacts displays. The café provides a welcome rest stop for all and there’s ample parking for coaches. There’s a special welcome for group organisers, but, no matter what the purpose of your visit, or the size of your party, experience the estate in all its glory for as long as your mood takes. Built as a baronial castle in 1867, Kylemore Abbey and the surrounding mountains and lakes are steeped in history. In equal measure, there’s tragedy, romance, royal visits and engineering innovation on the site, perched between the waters of the lake and the rocky hills behind. Kylemore became an abbey and home to a community of Benedictine Nuns in 1920, and has become an Irish icon of spirituality and education. kylemoreabbey.com
