Welcome to the 2022 edition of the Historic Houses Castles and Gardens Directory, it’s been a turbulent year since the last edition, indeed history making, we’ve spent a lot of time at home, The staycation in Britain, and we have learnt to appreciate what we have in our surrounding areas as well as the wider UK. We take this opportunity to celebrate all that the British Isles has to offer, a rich and diverse history, an incomparable legacy of renowned places and extraordinary buildings found nowhere else. We still have an unending fascination with the lives of the aristocratic rich and famous, both real and imagined (Bridgerton wow, and there making a second series) so it’s just as well there’s a fabulous collection of historic houses, castles and gardens, gilded by the royal and rich, packed with treasures waiting to be discovered. There’s no doubt the travel and leisure sector has bore a heavy burden in terms of a reduction in numbers visiting and therefore the financial implications have been enormous, our historical national assets have not been exempt, so it’s more important than ever to support our national heritage with your patronage to help ensure their future for the centuries and generations to come.

Spotlight on... Elton Hall

Winner of the 2021 Historic Houses Judges’ Choice Garden of the Year Award, Elton Hall has been home to the Proby family since 1660. Every room is packed with magnificent treasures from important works by Old Masters to remarkable 19th century works by Millais and Alma-Tadema. In addition, visitors can enjoy works by worldrenowned British artists such as Reynolds, Constable and Gainsborough.

Each generation of the Proby family has collected books and the Hall now has three libraries containing a collection of over 10,000 books. There is a Prayer Book given to Henry VIII with inscriptions by him and his three children up to early twentieth century hand printed books.

Elton Hall sits in 200 acres of parkland bound by the River Nene. The shape of the present garden was laid out in 1913, but by the 1980’s a large proportion had fallen into disrepair. Since then, the programme of restoration and improvement has been continuous. A flower garden has replaced the rose garden, along with a new sunken garden, a shrub garden and wilderness area. The Gothic Revival Orangery was built to celebrate the Millennium and the arbour was completed to mark the Golden Jubilee celebrations. Visitors

Hill Close Garden Warwick’s Secret

From its Tudor beginnings to its restoration in the 1900s, there are a wealth of stories to uncover. New for 2022: learn about America’s first President in their exhibition, George Washington: Life and Legacy.

If you are looking for history and have a love of gardens then these unique Victorian detached gardens are a place to visit and explore. Events are held all year round including workshops for all ages and many child orientated family events. To start the season they hold their yearly Snowdrop weekend where visitors can get up close and personal with their raised display and explore over 130 varieties around the gardens. Moving forward there are many events including Arts and Crafts days to evening musical performances. Toward the end of the summer season and into Autumn they hold their yearly Apple Day and Country Crafts event. This is a popular event celebrating all things Apple. Crafts stalls are spread all over the many individual gardens along with entertainment.

Take a leisurely stroll through the garden where there is plenty to enjoy from spring to autumn: densely planted borders, heritage orchard, beautiful mature trees, and topiary peacocks. The designated Silent Space is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the countryside setting.

Families will enjoy the playground, new messy play area, and plenty of space to run and explore. Don’t miss their special event days throughout the year, including their Easter Fun Day (17 April) and July 4th celebrations (3 July).

Set within picturesque Sussex parkland, Hammerwood Park is a Grade 1-listed country house and the first work of architect and polymath Benjamin Latrobe (1764-1820) celebrated for his later contributions to the White House and the Capitol in Washington D.C. Since 1982, the house has been the home of the Pinnegar family, who saved the historic property from dereliction
