Dear Readers,
There have been some notable developments in the area recently: Markyate has a much-needed, revamped general store and post office; Studham has had a film crew present for the making of the Village of the Year programme; Caddington has a new car park at the Sports and Social Club; and Redbourn has made the final of Britain in Bloom. What a tribute to all the hard work the green-fingered volunteers have put into making the village so full of blooms. The coronation of King Charles III will be a chance for people to come together and celebrate our monarchy which endures despite the scandals and upsets. Did you know you can organise a street or park party without needing any special permissions? See our article on page 18 to find out how.
Since the last issue, I have been fortunate enough to make a trip down under. This is my ninth visit to Australia since my first in 1983. My brother emigrated in 1973 on £10 ticket. ‘Poms’ with needed skills were invited to emigrate to Australia for just £10 in the 1970s and he has lived there ever since. It is a very different place now compared with the 1970s; it is thriving, the standard of living is high and the lifestyle
is varied and relaxed; it offers an ideal environment to rear children. Watching the squads of children being bused onto Cottesloe beach daily to learn to swim and surf was an eye-opener when we hear that the government here has just promised £63 million to keep our swimming pools open, after many closures due to maintenance and heating costs soaring. In Australia, you can swim in the ocean for free, in the safety of the cordoned areas, protected by shark nets. Trust me, these areas are safe to swim! Ironically, many of our junior doctors are leaving the picket line and being lured down under by higher wages and better working conditions. I cannot blame them for wanting to leave the UK but I must admit that I have had many opportunities to emigrate over the years but always chose to stay in the UK. Why? I often ask myself. I think the answer is simple; it is because it is home. Although we moan about the weather, if you enjoy the great outdoors which I do, the seasons are beautiful. The mainstream news is trustworthy and I love the fact that I can still watch the BBC and listen to Times Radio when abroad, due to streaming. And finally, the British people: the character forged over the centuries is unique to our shores. The people make me feel at home and home is where the heart is! Enjoy what’s ahead.

Herbal Experience for Caddington WI
We have got off to a very good start for 2023. Several new members have joined WI and our numbers are increasing.
The talk at our monthly meeting was by Beverley Bond on herbs and their uses; not just culinary, but religious, general good health, and as 'carpeting' in medieval times. A few herbs were passed around for members to smell. We learned that monasteries kept herb beds near the infirmaries, making sure that toxic ones were well away from the safe herbs. The job of a ‘herb strewer’ (carpeting) was well paid in the 17th century at £24.00 per annum plus perks! Lavender is a wonder herb with many antiseptic uses; it was invaluable during WWI. Mediterranean plants are adaptive plants and have evolved smaller, curved leaves to prevent burning and collect/direct moisture toward their roots. They grow on light-reflecting, stony ground of poor quality, whereas European green leafy herbs prefer good, moist soil with some shade. We learned there are many more herbs than those on supermarket shelves and a lot of them are literally under our feet in our woodlands; Herb Robert, Jack by the Hedge, and the Stinging Nettle to name but a few. Note to anyone with an ex-trampoline bare patch in the garden - this can be adapted to create a herb garden! Our meeting for March was an in-house craft evening. Carol Hardy provided us with string, a metal ring, and we supplied our fingers! Carol demonstrated the art of macrame and we were given the task of creating a key ring. Right over left, left under right, a tug, and there you go, bearing in mind it should twist as you do the knots. The giggles and laughter began as we struggled to get started. Some achieved the keyring task and they looked lovely but some sat in bewilderment at what they had created, myself included! I must thank Carol for being very patient with us and we had a very enjoyable evening.
We had a quick Annual Meeting with the existing committee agreeing to sit again for the next year. If you feel you can help us we would appreciate your help. Our competition was to make a homemade item. Nicky Moore was the winner with Kay Storey second and Kay Palfrey third; how many talented ladies have we!
The talk at our April meeting will be on Whipsnade Zoo and topically the competition will be to make an animal
from a vegetable.
23rd April St. Georges Day at Heathfield Community Centre is a big event in the village and we have been asked to provide refreshments including the popular bacon sandwiches.
Please can you design a
We have Lace Making for the evening in May and the competition is to bring an item with lace. We will be toasting the new King with a bucks fizz and we will wear red, white and blue.
The committee is arranging a trip out to Bletchley Park, the home of the code breakers in WWII; it is a very interesting site to visit and we are looking forward to it.
Caddington WI meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30 p.m. at the Caddington Sports and Social club. Always a cuppa and cake for you.

Kensworth Village Hall was awash with colour on 3rd September for the annual show. Despite difficult conditions of late for gardeners, over 300 exhibits were displayed and attracted many compliments from those that crowded into the Village Hall for the presentations, which were made by Andrew Gibbons of Ashtons Estate Agents, who kindly sponsored the Show.
Eliot joined Majestic Trees four and a half years ago after completing five years of studies; first his Kew Gardens apprenticeship then his Kew Diploma, both achieved with
Not for the first time, Geoffrey Stafford walked away with the major awards as the Overall Winner and also for the Best Vegetables on display. Other winners included Emma Dick (Best Flowers), David Foster (Best Fruit), Catherine Porter (Flower Arrangement), Jenny Dries (Cookery & Craft), Anna Prosceinska (Preserves) and Ella Rice (Children’s Categories). The award for the Best Front Garden went to Helen & Dave Gingell, whilst Best Allotment Awards were given to Graham Lee and Sharon Hutchins. We will shortly commence the planning process for the 2023 Show and welcome anyone who might be interested in joining our small but friendly Committee. Any enquiries should be addressed to David Manton (david.manton@aol.co.uk).
New dates are available for a free course for parents and carers of children aged 2-5 years, delivered from six of Central Bedfordshire Council’s children’s centres. The ‘Parenting Puzzle’ programme supports parents and carers to develop strategies to reduce the challenges and stress of parenting and prepare children for school. It’s also a great place to meet other parents and carers within the area. Parents can choose to attend either a 4-week or a 10-week version of the programme. 100 per cent of parents who have attended one of the courses said they would recommend it to other parents and carers. One parent said: “…it helped understand my children more, I wish I’d done it years ago.” Another said: “Life is changing for us in such a positive way now.”

Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all?
That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light - all fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing
customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every
installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9557 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

How a Lasting Power of Attorney gives you peace of mind
Hundreds of thousands of people register Lasting Powers of Attorney each year and it isn’t hard to see why.
Life expectancy has increased dramatically over the last 50 years meaning most of us can expect to live into our eighties and beyond. While that is undoubtedly good news, it does raise issues about how we protect our interests and those of our loved ones as we get older and possibly lose the ability to make decisions for ourselves.
The Covid pandemic has also given us cause to think about life’s fragility and the possible long-term effects of illness or injury. This is why Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) can be so helpful.
An LPA is a legal document that you can draw up when you are fit and healthy, authorising someone you choose to make decisions on your behalf if you are no longer able to do so yourself at some point in the future. The person drawing up the LPA is known as the donor and the person being authorised to make decisions is referred to as the attorney.
The property and finance LPA allows you to appoint someone to look after your financial affairs, and the personal welfare LPA lets you grant an attorney authority over such matters as health care and the kind of treatment you receive.
Both kinds of LPA must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), which administers the system.
LPAs are often used by older people to choose someone they know and trust to make decisions for them if they lose capacity in the future – but can be used by anyone at any age. They are easy to set up with the help of an expert solicitor and once registered, they provide you with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that if anything untoward should happen to impair your decision making, your interests will be looked after by someone you trust. It’s little wonder therefore that the number of registered LPAs has increased enormously in recent years to more than four million.
Please contact us if you would like more information about Lasting Powers of Attorney.

Major Shop Revamp in Markyate
The Nisa has had a major redevelopment and is now a One Stop franchise. The long awaited revamped shop and post office has been very well received by residents in Markyate and the surrounding villages. MiMagazine delivery person, Peter Marshall takes every opportunity to shop at the new One Stop Shop. He said, “It has a Costa coffee machine and there is more choice of food. The prices are reasonable too.”
Strange Goings on in Markyate
You may have noticed some strange sightings of animals here in Markyate, but don’t worry there hasn’t been a break-out from Whipsnade Zoo. We can also guarantee that these animals are friendly!
David Rhys is a Markyate resident and the Artistic Director for the award-winning Berkhamsted Theatre Company. He is currently choreographing and producing the animal puppets for their latest show, ‘Dr Dolittle – A New Musical’. See advert in What’s On page 37
The Doctor takes us on a mystical journey to help us understand the animals and clear his name. Directed by Gemma Lloyd-Buckingham, come and visit the magical, marvellous, miraculous world of the famous Doctor John Dolittle and his amazing ability to talk to animals. Join him as he embarks on a perilous voyage to distant islands, to discover the Great Pink Sea Snail, then fly through the skies on a Giant Lunar Moth! The two headed PushmiPullyu is also on hand to show off his dancing skills. With Musical Direction from Jill Neenan guiding our live band through classic songs like ‘I’ve Never Seen Anything Like It’ and ‘Talk To The Animals’, this circus of a production promises to entertain and enthral audiences, both young and old.
Playing at the David Evans Court Theatre, Tring, there are performances at 7:30pm from Tuesday 18th April through to Saturday 22nd, with matinees at 11am and 3pm on the Saturday. Tickets are available from the theatre website at www.courttheatre.co.uk/shows/drdolittle.
Do you oppose plans to expand Luton Airport?
Redbourn, Harpenden and Hitchin MP Bim Afolami certainly does and he wants support for his petition.
“Luton Rising have now begun consulting on a proposal to expand London Luton Airport from 18 million passengers per annum to 32 million passengers per annum. These plans, which can be found in full here: www.lutonrising.org.uk, would have a detrimental impact on local transport networks and increase air and noise pollution in my constituency Hitchin & Harpenden [and other affected areas]. Alongside local communities I am fighting against these expansion plans and I need your help to demonstrate the strength of local feeling on this issue. I would be grateful if you could sign my petition against expansion, which will be presented by me to the Secretary of State to show how strongly local people feel that the Development Consent Order should not be granted www.bimafolami.co.uk/stop-luton-expansion
David has lived in Markyate for seven years and can often be found propping up the bar in The Swan, cheering on his beloved Wales in the rugby (although cheering may be a stretch in current times!). Formerly a professional ballet dancer, he is now a ballet teacher at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts and is also a Personal Trainer and fitness advisor. Rennie Grove and Peace Hospice Care merge
Could you be a Compassionate Neighbour?
As part of its merger, the new hospice is bringing the Compassionate Neighbours project to St Albans and the surrounding areas.
Compassionate Neighbours is an award-winning social movement that sees volunteers matched with Community Members in their area, to offer friendship and emotional support to people who are lonely, ill or isolated due to life-limiting illness or bereavement.
Peace Hospice Care has been running the project for four years and is now expanding it to offer the benefits to people in and around St Albans.
Compassionate Neighbours are asked to commit to around one hour per week to support a carefully matched Community Member, which could include visiting them at home for a chat, taking them out locally or simply sharing an activity together, such as a short walk.
Volunteers don’t need any kind of experience or relevant background, as full training and support is given. We’re looking for people of all ages with a range of life experiences and interests.”
To find out more about either accessing the support of a Compassionate Neighbour or offering your time, email compassion@peacehospicecare.org.uk or call 01923 330 330.
Could you organise a Street Party? for The Coronation Big Lunch 6th - 8th May
If the road does not need to be closed, it may not be as difficult to organise as you think. From a cup of tea with a neighbour to a street party, the event is a great way to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and get to know your community a little better. For inspiration, top tips and practical advice, visit the Eden Project Communities website.
www.edenprojectcommunities.com/the-big-lunch Planning your event
You’ll need to identify which category your event fits into. The Government has identified two different types of celebrations for the Coronation:
1. Street parties
• Only for residents/neighbours
• Publicity only for residents
• In a quiet residential road, block of flats or local green space
• Self-organised
• Normally no insurance
• No formal risk assessment needed
• No licences normally necessary unless the sale of alcohol is involved.
• There is no requirement to complete a risk assessment or other documentation, however residents will be responsible for their own health and safety. It is important to ensure that access for emergency vehicles is available at all times.
Further advice on safely planning your event is available from the Eden Communities Project, The Government and the The Street Party Site.
2. Public events
• Anyone can attend
• External publicity (such as online or posters)
• In buildings, parks and so on
• Professional/skilled organisers
Redbourn in Bloom
CAN YOU HELP? If you can spare an hour or two to help either once a month or just occasionally, we would be delighted to hear from you. We need volunteers for planting, weeding and dead-heading, assisting at events, and with occasional “heavier” tasks such as setting up tables, chairs or the gazebo, or repairing and filling planters.
Please contact Ann Davis on 01582 792518, email: ribhelpers@yahoo.com
• Insurance needed
• Risk assessment common to be written
• Licence usually needed.
• Public events are ones that can be attended by the local community and are in public locations. These should follow the Council Safety Advisory Group process.
Road closures
Street parties on a public road, will need permission to close the road. Road closures needed to have been made before Sunday 26th March.

Refurbished Car Park for Caddington Sports Club
Refurbishing the car park has been a long term aim of the Caddington Recreational Association, a registered charity that has run the clubhouse and sports field for the last 40 years. The refurbishment was made possible by grant funding that both Caddington Parish Council and Central Bedfordshire District Council helped the charity unlock. Paul Deacock, Chairman of The Caddington Recreational Association (centre left) said, "I'm delighted with the newly refurbished car park and very grateful to the assistance we have received from staff and councillors at both Caddington Parish and Central Bedfordshire Councils. North Herts Surfacing Limited, a contractor regularly used to maintain Central Bedfordshire's roads, have done a super job of refurbishing the car park and we are very grateful to Ron Brodie and his team who have carried out their work so professionally." Club Manager Terri Peak (far right) said, "The £100k refurbishment of the 80 space car park has really improved the Club's kerb appeal. We regularly hire out our hall that comes complete with its own bar and other facilities for birthdays and weddings and the income we receive from that helps the charity to provide adult's and children's sporting activity at the club that is so important to so many people in the village and the surrounding area." Readers wishing to contact Caddington Sports Club can do so on 01582 450151 or at: enquiries@caddingtonclub.co.uk.
BIG NEWS FOR REDBOURN
Following our success in winning GOLD IN Anglia in Bloom and 1st in the Small Town category last year, Redbourn has been put forward into the Final of Britain in Bloom this year. Judging will take place in late July/early August, after the regional judging.
Besides colourful planting, the judges look at community participation, involvement of children and young people, business support, sustainability and care for the local environment.
This is exciting news, but will mean a lot of hard work! We are asking all sections of the community and organizations in the village to join in, either by joining us and helping with our planting schemes, making special efforts with their own frontage planting, letting us know of any planting or environmental projects we can include in Redbourn's Portfolio, and maybe joining in village litterpicks to help keep Redbourn tidy. Donations are also very welcome to help towards the costs of our planting efforts.
For further details, please contact Pat Schofield, 01582 793096, email pandjschofield@talktalk.net. See "Groups & Societies" for details about joining or volunteering.

Main Dealer vs Independents
There are several reasons why people choose to maintain their vehicle at a franchised main dealer. What makes them so good and is there an alternative?
Why choose a franchised dealer?
Consumers look towards their local main dealership to provide them with the expertise that no other dealership can provide. They are looking for a ‘gold’ standard service from people who they can trust and are knowledgeable about their car. In return they are prepared to travel to their local dealer and pay for the privilege.
So, what does this ‘gold standard’ incorporate?
Dealers are trained specifically in your brand of car. They make sure you follow the manufacturer’s warranty schedule. All parts and fluids fitted are recommended by the manufacturer for your make and model of car. In addition to servicing, they will also carry out safety checks and identify any potential issues whilst conducting any minor recall rectification work and software updates.
They will remind you when your service and MOT is due and will stamp your service book with the dealer stamp, authenticating the service level given and, if a nearly new vehicle, will maintain the vehicles warranty. You will also potentially be offered a courtesy car or collection and delivery service.
Quick repairs are aided with specialist diagnostic equipment and parts on site.
Seat and floor covers are used to protect the inside of your car and the majority have car washing facilities to ensure your pride and joy is returned to you clean.
Can Independents supply a similar service?
Absolutely! In fact, they are both set up in in a similar way: A business owner’s first choice is whether to go it alone or to buy into a franchise where there is the
backing of the manufacturer and the reassurance of brand identity.
Buying into a franchise and paying monthly subscriptions is appealing. The manufacturer supplies a product pipeline, an existing customer base, marketing, training and management framework and a network of businesses. The set up is easier and the ongoing support is substantial although constraining.
For those brave enough to start from scratch, it can take 8-10 years before you turn a profit! But the owner has the freedom to make decisions and support customers and staff in the way they want to. If they haven’t managed a business before they will have to think of health and safety, public liability, employment law, warranty as well as invest heavily in equipment.
So, the qualities of a business owner are similar, the difference is in the manufacturer backing. So, if you can find a garage owner who has main dealer ethos and General Manager experience, then you can be assured that their garage will be run the same as a franchised dealer.
Training and Knowledge
Product training also doesn’t stop with the manufacturer. Independent Technicians are highly skilled and can adapt to any vehicle, much to the envy of their main dealer counterparts. They maintain their knowledge with trade association (such as IMI or RMI) approved training which are accredited in the same way as brand specific training. Cars have broadly the same components whether tyres, brakes, engine, gearbox, or exhaust system. Electrics operate in the same way, although wired differently, so if you
To advertise call 07941 661004 Please mention when responding to adverts 24
understand electrics, you can work on any car. The difference is in layout and any known common faults in newer cars.
The benefit of main dealer training is that they will be aware of these sooner.
Equipment
The quality of diagnostic equipment varies considerably. There is no point buying a carpet sweeper and expecting the performance of a Dyson! Main Dealers will have one specific machine whereas their independent counterparts will need several different machines that are tailored to different manufacturers.
It’s not just about having good equipment. It is the skill of the technician that determines what the exact issue is. That is why main dealers will have a wide span of capabilities from Master Tech to Apprentice. Independents can do the same if they wish to.
Main dealers have the back up of a ‘technical team’ who will support dealerships countrywide in identifying issues and trends. Independents can also have access to a technical team giving them the same back up. These are usually people who have worked within a dealer network so understand the different vehicles.
So, if you are looking for good diagnostics, look for a garage who have a span of knowledge including
By Melanie Wooding Jones Redbourn Auto Solutions, caring for you and your car
a master technician who use good diagnostic equipment.
Parts
When it comes to parts, they are not all the same and the industry is prone to counterfeit goods. A good quality part will fit securely and are built to be robust and last. In contrast, inferior parts are made with different metals which strain, crack and break under pressure. Cheap parts are rarely good value and may need replacing prematurely.
OE (Original Equipment) Parts are the parts that are fitted to the vehicle when it comes out of the factory. Anything after then is not OE. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Parts are used at all main dealers. Car part manufacturers such as Bosch, Hella, Valeo are trusted parts suppliers direct to factories and often boxes are rebranded by the manufacturer. Not all parts are made by the car manufacturer! Both OE and OEM are termed as genuine parts.
So, if your independent garage uses these parts, then it is the same as our trusted main dealers.
Safety Checks
A diligent garage will conduct safety checks allowing them to report to you anything that may need your attention. Every garage has a duty of care to ensure the car is roadworthy as you leave the premises, and
To advertise call 07941 661004 Please mention when responding to adverts 25
if not to tell you what is wrong. If a software update is evident, an independent will organise it for you. Where software updates are required, the manufacturer will write to you to let you know.
Service Books, Warranty & Service Plans
Independents also stamp books to show that the car is being maintained to the manufacturers schedule and they also have access to online service books to get these updated for you. In terms of resale value of your vehicle for having a main dealer stamp, you will be financially better off for having an independent stamp the book for you. It is a lovely thing to be able to say you have a full dealer history, but it doesn’t make hundreds of pounds of difference! Warranties can also be maintained through your local independent garage providing they are utilising genuine or OEM parts and keeping to the manufacturers schedule.
Main Dealers are keen to keep you within the network as there has been a migration of customers towards independents. Service Plans are a great way to do this and help you spread the cost of servicing throughout the year. However, it is worth checking what they cover. Many are for the servicing cost only, so any parts needed are an added cost. You might also choose to save regularly into a separate bank account for such occasions and have control over what you are spending.
Customer Service
There is no doubt that walking into a pristine building gives you a feeling of being special or important and that people will do all they can to help you. But is it is always down to the people within the dealership as to what you will experience. Although, a main dealer may know several of their customers, they will by no means know or understand what adversities you are currently facing. They can’t, there are too many people for them to be able to offer you a more personal service. They wouldn’t know to phone the daughter of the customer who brings their car in for its annual service monthly. She has dementia and forgets regularly where her car keys are. They wouldn’t be on hand when you leave your baby in the car with the keys and can’t get in. They won’t have time to find, and extract, a scared gecko from behind your dashboard. They don’t have the facility to support a cancer patient who just needs to sleep and is too ill to drive back home after treatment. These are just some of the examples where Independents shine. They know their customers well and are there to support them when they are needed. Independents also support the community. They give to local charities, they give jobs to local people, they support community events. They are part of the
community.
Extras
Although not routine for all independents, a few will remind you when your service or MOT is due and be able to offer you a collection and delivery service or a courtesy car. Some independents utilise coverings to protect the inside of your car and can clean your vehicle before it is returned.
Looking to the future…
Global issues over the last few years have forced businesses to rationalise their operations. Some have downsized and some have reduced their hours or closed completely. The number of people with a vehicle is growing, but the garages are reducing in number. Changes in legislation surrounding electric vehicles, emissions, MOT, and block exemption, etc has altered the landscape of how businesses operate. Currently the UK is covered by the EU Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation. This gives consumers the right to have their car serviced or repaired at any garage without invalidating their warranty and allows any garage to access a vehicle’s service history and repair maintenance information. It ensures consumers have a choice and helps keep cost low. This expires in May 2023, and with nothing to take its place, will allow manufacturers to decide who can access their vehicle information. In the USA they use a system called NASTF, which is a collaborative approach with garages working directly with vehicle manufacturers. It allows full sharing of information with garages that have been approved.
In the UK, this collaborative approach sees GarageSafe working directly with vehicle manufacturers and UK government to allow access to information for verified, approved garages via a secure online gateway. So, in future access to VM information will be limited to those who have been approved.
The way we purchase has also changed. There is more e-commerce with rise of businesses such as Cazoo (car buying), Motorway (car disposal) and Amazon (network). With networks such as these, the reliance for a manufacturer on its main dealer network changes.
One thing is for sure, consumers will always want convenience and excellent customer service. At Redbourn Auto Solutions we do all the above, the examples of customer care are real, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. We are proudly one of the few garages who have been GarageSafe approved. The only thing we can’t do, that main dealers can, is wash cars. We are perfectly situated beside a beautiful river which we hope you understand, we need to protect… in any case, our ducks don’t like bubbles!

HOW ADVICE CAN BOOST YOUR FINANCIAL WELLBEING
The professional advice received from a financial adviser can make it easier to understand your financial situation and help you create strategies for better money management. They will be able to provide tailored advice that considers your individual circumstances, goals and needs.
They will explain the options available, from setting up emergency funds to effectively managing debt or investments, helping you take control of your finances with confidence. They also offer guidance based on the latest legislation and tax regulations, so that you’re making informed decisions about your money.
By taking steps towards good personal finance, this will lead to improved wellbeing overall. Having a secure financial outlook is usually linked to lower levels of stress, better mental health and increased satisfaction with life.
FEELING IN CONTROL
Receiving professional financial advice is the first step to helping create a secure financial future and when it comes to managing your finances it can help give you a sense of control. A professional financial adviser will provide objective insight into your current financial situation, helping you understand your incomings and outgoings and create an effective budgeting and savings plan.
They are also able to identify any potential debt issues and advise the best approach to tackling these. This
advice will enable you to feel more confident in taking control of your day-today finances and secure in your overall financial wellbeing, giving access to knowledge that will set you up for success both now and in the future.
CAPACITY TO ABSORB A FINANCIAL SHOCK
By taking steps to review and plan for your finances, you can be well-equipped to absorb any financial shock that may arise. Establishing an emergency fund of six months’ worth of essentials, combined with appropriate insurance policies, will help protect you and your family in the event of unforeseen circumstances. Taking security measures now is a wise decision that could save you potential hardship later on down the line. Protecting yourself financially can bring both peace of mind and long-term security. It is therefore wise to assess the financial risks your household may face, and plan accordingly to ensure your financial security. By taking the time to review your finances with a professional financial adviser and put a protection plan in place, you can be well-prepared for any unexpected financial shock that may come your way.

They consider factors such as investment risk, taxes and any other financial implications so that you are able to make informed decisions about your money. They will also help you decide which areas to focus on first and suggest strategies that could help you meet your aspirations while remaining within a comfortable level of risk, for example through utilising your ISA and pension options. With professional advice, you can rest assured that you are well positioned to reach your goals and enjoy a higher degree of financial wellbeing.
FLEXIBILITY TO MAKE CHOICES
Having the flexibility to make choices is an important part of your financial wellbeing. A professional financial adviser will help you understand how different life decisions could impact your finances both today and in the future. This may include considering options like taking a career break, retiring early or selling a business. Being able to ‘rehearse’ these scenarios with professional guidance will help you feel more confident and secure when making difficult decisions, ensuring that you enjoy life to the full.
With professional advice, you will gain clarity over

WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS for STEVE HARLEY acoustic band in Harpenden at
The Eric Morecambe Centre on Saturday 20th May
Steve Harley has announced a set of Spring / Summer live dates with his acclaimed Acoustic Band with many already sold out. Having recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of Cockney Rebel, Steve is widely considered one of the most charismatic performers and he continues to play to sold-out venues across the UK and Europe. The Times wrote, in a profile marking this half century, that signature hit ‘Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)’, “Remains one of the most beloved songs of the modern age”. For Steve, life on the road is more than just a job: it is almost his life’s blood.
The Acoustic Band for 2023 will find Steve supported by long-standing bandmate, violinist/guitarist Barry Wickens, with Oli Hayhurst on double bass, and Dave Delarre on lead guitar. Steve has been playing Live shows around the world for over 50 years and the thrill of another night in another place to another audience has not dimmed at all. “I still get a buzz when boarding the tour bus, like I did all those years ago. There’s still that magical feeling. It has not diminished at all.”
The acoustic sets will include songs taken from his last
The 50plus started as employment for the 50+
21 years on, this is the story...
50plus began as a handyman service some 21 years ago. Today the service portfolio has grown to include a broad set of home repair, improvement and commercial services and very much in keeping with the company’s name, a range of services for the elderly.
50plus was originally conceived as a means of providing employment for those aged 50plus and the company continues with this concept. The idea of using mature service providers together with a service orientated structure also chimes with customers who are 50plus and the company reports that the majority of its domestic customers are 65 plus!
50plus is run from a head office in Buckinghamshire with field staff distributed over a wide area including Milton Keynes and the surrounds. In keeping with the times the company offers online services in addition to telephone
album ‘Uncovered’ [re-recordings of a couple of his own songs and nine others he’s always wanted to perform] but of course a selection from the vast and eclectic Harley Songbook. ‘Mr Soft’, ‘Judy Teen’, ‘Sebastian’ and the legendary ‘Make Me Smile’ will all be reproduced in the unique acoustic style. Close-Up Culture stated of an Acoustic Band show: “It was an intimate night in the presence of a great musician. An individual whose passion for live performance and perfection (it shows in his face) remains undiminished.” Rod Stewart, who covered Steve’s song ‘A Friend For Life’, describes him as “One of the finest lyricists Britain has produced.”
Steve has previously received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Acoustic Music from the Acoustic Festival of Britain, and a prestigious Gold Badge of Merit from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.
TO WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS please email: maria@mppromotions.co.uk with a one line answer, naming your favourite song by Steve Harley. If it matches our choice, you could be the lucky winner. Please put MIMAGAZINE STEVE HARLEY Harpenden in the title line. Entries close on 30th April 2023.
booking and has embraced technology to provide a range of easy to use technically enabled services for our elderly customers. Telephones (and today email, text, web enquiries, WhatsApp and more) are answered, advice is provided and appointments are run on a date and time basis. As they say: they are different - it's all about the service. In addition to booking and administrative staff, the head office has personnel who provide technical support and advice for both customers and service providers. They also maintain an on-line ‘knowledge centre’ on the company’s web site where hints and advice on what needs doing, what to look for and how long repairs may take.
