Message from the Vice-Chancellor

It is always a pleasure for me to write in the house programme of the annual performance of the Chinese University Chorus. It marks another year of inspired planning, hectic coordination and hours of dedicated practice, which culminate in the fine performance that is being presented to the audience tonight. Members of the Chorus, the accompanists, the conductor, as well as the concert managers and other administrators behind the scene, have all contributed substantially to the making of this concert, all in a common pursuit for artistic excellence, for the listening pleasure of the general public, and, perhaps most importantly, for another aesthetic experience which will long be cherished in the memory of the members of the Chorus themselves. Choral singing, as the musicologists tell us, is the most extensively enjoyed form of music-making nowadays. In the past it was closely associated with churches and monasteries, where services were sung by meticulously trained choirs several times a day. Secular music, however, had its own course of development, in which were sowed the seeds for the gradual rise of civic choral societies, the founding of which has always been closely associated with urbanization, the presence of an affluent middle class, and a rising level of educational attainment among citizens. The emergence of great works for the mixed choir by leading composers of the day also gives the choirs a large and varied repertoire. Over these years the CU Chorus has enriched the cultural life on campus, and helped bring the general public to the awareness and appreciation of fine choral music. It has a great mission to fulfil, and a glorious tradition to uphold. I look forward to the Chorus continuing to make good music in the years to come, and going from strength to strength as it introduces more ambitious and colourful works to its audiences.

With many documents, such as the programme booklet of the very first annual concert, lost, CU Chorus' history can still be traced by mementos, papers, memories and documents in its 40 years of history. Among these, the most impressive item is a 1974 album, with a handwritten preface by the chorus' second chairperson, the late Ko Tsan-hun (1976 New Asia Economics). He noted down the chorus' activities in its formative years, and shared the visions of members at the time. From the first day of its establishment, CU Chorus is destined to be a "fervent" society. The founding Chairperson Wat Chun-fai (1973 Chung Chi Physics), 2 in The Founding of CU Chorus , wrote "there were many students joining the chorus with beyond-doubt passions. We never had to drag anyone to rehearsals." The chorus brought together a group of people who would do anything to sing. With this passion of sharing music, the young chorus presented numerous performances both inside and outside of campus, traveling to as far as the Philippines in its maiden overseas tour in 1977, which was organised solely by the students themselves, including a memorable episode of arranging "toll" payment to the Philippine customs. No obstacle was too difficult to overcome in the road of sharing music. Today, CU Chorus is still a gathering place for fervent choral fans in the university. With undergraduates, postgraduates and alumni, chorus members are devoted music lovers who wholeheartedly enjoy the frequent rehearsals and demanding performance schedule. Our love of choral music is shared by maestros from around the world: Dirk DuHei and his protégé Johnny Ku from Taiwan, Theodora Pavlovitch from Bulgaria, Paul Hondorp and Howard McCrary from the United States have all shared with us their invaluable experiences, generously providing guidance to us as we strive for advancement. Success may requires "timely opportunities, environmental advantages and favourable relationships," we are fortunate enough to score full marks at least in the "favourable relationships."
Over the years, CU Chorus has accrued followers and listeners from local and overseas performances. Recently we tasted concerts that were sold-out. Starting from this year, we make annual season plans, with one public concert in summer, another one in winter and a free concert in campus. The performances may be seen as part of our rigorous training, they are, more importantly, for us to share more music with more audiences. We established CU Chorus Association Limited in 2011 and registered it as a charitable organisation, so we may have better management over the administration and devote ourselves to every performance without too much distraction. We strive for excellence in both the music-making and management, so we may bring good music to the public. The master of modern corporate management Jim Collins, who has worked with his life to find out what makes one great, has once written in Good to Great a discussion with an MBA student of Stanford University. "So, the question of 'Why greatness?' is almost a nonsense question." He continues, "If you're engaged in work that you love and care about, for whatever reason, then the question needs no answer. The question is not why, but how." To share music in the form of singing is the common love of CU Chorus members across the decades. I believe, in the days to come, CU Chorus will continue to race towards greatness; with improved singing, we will show our audiences that no matter how outrageous the world has become, there is still such beauty as choral music, and there is hope in life. This endless pursuit shall be the everlasting power behind our advancement. 2

For 40 years' pursuit of excellence, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus (CU Chorus) has become one of the best local university choirs in Hong Kong. With a global vision, CU Chorus has performed not only on the local stage, but also in various cities in southern China and Southeast Asia. With its high quality performances and innovative programmes, CU Chorus is dedicated to promote the art of choral music to the general public. CU Chorus was founded in 1972 by a group of CUHK students. In the early days, the role of conductor was taken up by students. Since the 1990s, the formal post of Music Director and Conductor is established. The post is first taken up by Dennis Ng, followed by Yeh Cheung-shing in 2000, and currently Leon Chu from 2006. From a group that once taken part in jointuniversity singing contest by the Hong Kong Federation of Students, to the one that organises annual performances, CU Chorus has now developed its range of performances including annual concerts, free campus concerts, overseas exchange performances, Christmas caroling, conducting workshops and charity outreach performances. CU Chorus presented a number of popular programmes with diverse themes, through which many foreign composers and their works were introduced to the Hong Kong music scene. Recent concerts include The Atlas of Voice (2008), which presented diverse choral works in 10 languages from around the world; Hallowed be Thy Name (2010), a showcase of sacred choral music, bringing Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi's works to Hong Kong; The Glamorous Voice (2012), featuring the dazzling choral works by contemporary composer Eric Whitacre, who also sent his personal regards to the concert; A Jazzy Christmas with Howard McCrary (2012), with all newly-arranged Christmas songs by American jazz legend Howard McCrary, a novel take of the festive celebrations. While making an influence in repertoire expansion in local choral scene, CU Chorus' performances also made an impact through the internet: the YouTube video of CU Chorus received coverage in the Israeli newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, for its wide circulation and resonance in Jewish communities worldwide.
Promoting Hong Kong choral compositions is one of the mission of CU Chorus since its establishment. CU Chorus has regularly commissioned Hong Kong composers such as Dennis Wu, Andy So, Prof. Samson Young, Tang Lok-yin and Ng Wah-hei for new pieces. At the pace of one new piece per year, CU Chorus strives to develop a unique and local voice in Hong Kong choral music. In 2008 and 2009, CU Chorus was invited for demonstrative talks in Shanghai Normal University and Dayeh University, Taiwan respectively, introducing Hong Kong Cantonese choral compositions to the mainland and Taiwanese students, receiving much acclaim. Over the years, CU Chorus has collaborated with numerous local and overseas artists, including Taiwanese conductors Dirk DuHei and Johnny Ku, American conductor Paul Hondorp, Bulgarian choral conductor Theodora Pavlovitch, and American jazz musician Howard McCrary. Since the 1970s, CU Chorus has consistently engaged in exchange activities with choirs in the mainland China and Southeast Asia; visiting cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Manila, Bangkok, Singapore and Johor Bahru. CU Chorus was also invited to various guest performances overseas, including the 20th Macau International Music Festival in 2006, and the Thailand premiere of Mahler's 3rd Symphony by Siam Philharmonic Orchestra in 2010. To lay a better foundation for its never-ending artistic pursuit, CU Chorus registered charitable organisation status with CU Chorus Association (a limited-liability company) in January 2012. The new governing body, with its finer division of labour in artistic, management and administrative aspects, better facilitates the collaboration of CUHK undergraduates, postgraduates and alumni in their efforts to raise CU Chorus – a group coming from and based in CUHK – to ever-higher artistic heights.

CU Chorus:
A Miraculous Group of Diverse Singers Cheung Wai-Man The CU Chorus is made up of a wonderful combination of choral music enthusiasts, including undergraduates and postgraduates from various departments and faculties, and there are alumni too. This diverse background is one of the chorus' characters and puts us in a good advantage. We have students to help us understand about the music we sing in terms of its historic context; and even to overcome language barriers, for instance, students from Japanese studies offered a great halp when we performed a Japanese song a few years ago. We also have students explaining to us the difference between equal temperament and just temperament, and the physics of harmonics, which are all fundamental knowledge to get a good choral intonation. We complement each other to work out the chorus' vision. The chorus members are also diverse in age. There are freshmen, fresh graduates and alumni who have worked for quite some time. Undergraduate members often offer great help in a lot of administrative work of the chorus other than rehearsals, especially concert promotion and ticketing matters. For alumni members, as they show their fullhearted dedication by attending rehearsals regularly after a full-day work, they are respectable role models to the current student members. We fondly remember the late Rayman Tse, a philosophy graduate of 1970s who joined the CU Chorus in 2007. At a near-retirement age, he came to rehearsal after work on every Monday and went a long way home to Cheung Chau after the rehearsal ended at 10 at night. He is one of many respected members. Despite our diversity of academic background and age, we share the same passion of choral singing and longing to be better in music making. This single wish perhaps is the most important character which unites us all. We open ourselves to music of various styles; we hold our virtue in perfecting our musicality; we have frequent rehearsals and a stringent requirement over attendance; we insist to perform from memory so to stay attentive to the conductor, totally immersing ourselves in the music and giving our best on stage. We believe that being passionate is the steam of pursuing excellence. I am glad to know a group of choral music enthusiasts, coming from different background. All choirs are naturally made up of people in different walk of life, but with its 40 years of history, the CU Chorus has grown with special charisma among the CU-ers. Let us make this a place to share delightful choral music. Cheung Wai-man is the president of CU Chorus Association

PROGRAMME NOTES
Sorida
Sorida, composed in 2002, is an original work rather than an arrangement. While serving at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, my husband, William C. Powell, director of the PSC Collegiate Choir, wanted an African song for the choir's CD recording project. However, at the time, the music department could not afford to pay royalties for a published work. So I decided to research the possibility of arranging an African folksong. During my research, I came upon the word "sorida," which is an African greeting of brotherhood and unity. Additionally, I found an African children's song that plays on the syllables of the word "sorida." So, utilising the syllables as a foundation (so-ri-da, ri-da, ri-da), the song developed. I composed my own lyrics, melody, and harmonies that might represent the meaning and far-reaching scope of "sorida." After the choir used the song for its title track, I did not plan to have the song published. However, Andre Thomas, conductor, (Florida State University) heard the song through a mutual friend and called to say that he wanted it published and wanted to use it immediately. So, of course, I jumped at the opportunity to have Dr. Thomas expose my work (as did Hal Leonard)! Programme notes: Rosephanye Powell

Cantate Domino
(1567–1643) Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643)
Claudio Monteverdi was born in the 16th century; an accomplished Italian composer and singer, he was later credited as one of the first creators of early opera. As an advocate of the so-called "second practice," Monteverdi was a forerunner of the melodic style which flourished in the early 17th century that would later be recognised as Baroque style. Completed in 1620, Cantate Domino took its lyrics from Psalms 96 and 98 of the Bible, citing that "for the Lord has the salvation, the kindness and glory, all the earth should sing for the Lord." It is a song in classic Renaissance style, with considerable dancing quality. The song is in three sections: the first section "Sing to the Lord a new song, sing and bless His name" is a dance in triple time with homophonic texture, light and lively; the second section "for He has worked wonders" becomes a slower contrapuntal passage in duple time, giving a more solemn air; the third section "Sing and exult and make music, strike the lyrics and let voices sing" is in duple time, but once again with a bounce to the music, the series of counterpoint resembling hails from different people in a crowd. The piece ends in a serene tone after a reprise of the second section. Programme notes: Leon Chu

Love is sufferance, love is kindness, not complaint; Fear not, anger not, I owe you my feeling. Love does not boast, it is not proud; love is humble. Think not my own good, and love is eternal. We're joining hands through a life of bitterness and sweetness. Love is patient, not fear. The flower of love we sow fears no storm. With a shelter, we fear no hail and downpour. 專題 FEATURES
The World Premieres of CU Chorus Dennis Wu

The first world premiere performed by the CU Chorus can be traced to almost four decades ago. In 1975, Richard Tsang, who would become the coveted chairman of International Society of Contemporary Music, was a year three student of the music department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He wrote a choral work And When I Die, a setting of the poem by Yu Kwang-chung, then a professor in the university, for the CU Chorus. After four decades, this piece is still a refreshing and modern work, with repeating motives struggling afloat on the daring dissonance, requiring superb independence among four voices while maintaining a high drama. This was a very demanding piece even to this day. When recalling the preparation of And When I Die, Richard Tsang says "the members of the were all devoted and passionate about making music. Most of the members were amateur singers, we therefore spent months to prepare this difficult piece. It was a moment of sparks and passions." In the years when Leon Chu assumes directorship of the choir, the chorus is turning active again to commission new choral works. The chorus, as a result, engages in frequent world premières. One of the most challenging one is When He Said by Samson Young, recently crowned by a Hong Kong Arts Development Award Artist of the Year. Although better known as a multi-discipline artist, Samson has a unique touch on his music. When He Said was his maiden work for chorus with evidently colourful and mysterious music; tone clusters of female choir hover on the sporadic notes from piano and vibraphone. This is a difficult piece for the chorus to manage its accuracy in pitch and rhythm. Despite the technical difficulties these new works have brought, the music director further mandates one thing. Recently the chorus favours performance without a score on hand, making every member to memorise every single note and every word of the music when they are on stage. Such requirement does not get
any exemption for new works. This sounds way too harsh, but there is a reasoned ideal behind. "Every choral piece, regardless it is new or old, has its own challenge and difficulty. I ask the members to sing from memory because choral singing is very different from instrumental music-making." Leon Chu argues that performers should have a certain level of fluency on the words to fully express themselves on stage. "Just like drama, the actors speak and act with the script memorised. I expect the chorus members to have the same ideal as actors when they are on stage – to forget oneself and to perform with all the heart." It turns out that the chorus survives well under this training. I was once commissioned by the chorus some years ago to write a choral suite in four movements lasting twenty minutes. The performance was exciting and memorable. On a newspaper column, I wrote, "I saw seventy bright eyes staring at the conductor with animosity. By their confident eyesight, they have built an extra bridge from the stage to the audience, making this a powerful performance which brightened the auditorium." World premieres over these years include Andy So's The Flower of Love and Tang Lok-yin's Frozen Tears I. Tang, in this year's concert, will continue the cycle with Frozen Tears II, also on E. E. Cummings' love poems. The other world premiere which will be heard tonight is The Blossom by Ng Wah-hei, a University of MissouriKansas City doctoral degree holder.

Ng Wah-hei obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Music degrees from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, studying composition with Chan Wing-wah and Victor Chan. He finished his doctoral degree in the Musical Arts at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), where his composition teachers included Chen Yi, Zhou Long and James Mobberley. Ng's music has been performed by renowned musicians around the world, including Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra, Grammy Award-winning conductor Charles Bruffy with his Kansas City Chorale, Ensemble ConTempo Beijing, Jenga Percussion Quartet, Talea Ensemble of New York, NEXTET, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and Les Six. Ng's compositions won many awards, including regional winner of SCI/ASCAP Student Composition Commission, first prize of Crescendo Choral Competition, First Prize of Chamber Music Composition Competition at UMKC, and the Max Di Julio Prize. He currently lives in Hong Kong as a freelance musician. The lyrics of The Blossom are taken from Songs of Innocence by English poet William Blake (1757–1827). The composer sets the poem in strophic form to maintain the same musical style of the two stanzas. With the four parts joining in alternately, the music makes a pointillistic portrayal of the scenes of the sparrow (first verse) and the robin (second verse) flittering around the blossoms. Although the music is seemingly identical, the composer used different tempi to express the merriment of the sparrow and the prettiness of the robin respectively. The corresponding lines depicting the sparrow's swift flight to its nest and the robin's sobbing near the narrator's bosom are also contrasted with stark rhythmic changes. The piece is in A flat major, but the distant A major is introduced to bring dramatic tension, emphasizing the "happy blossom" in the poem. Programme notes: Leon Chu
Merry, merry sparrow! Under leaves so green, A happy blossom Sees you, swift as arrow, Seek your cradle narrow Near my bosom.
Pretty, pretty robin! Under leaves so green, A happy blossom Hears you sobbing, sobbing, Pretty, pretty, robin, Near my bosom.

Tang Lok-yin received her bachelor and doctoral degrees in composition at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and The Chinese University of Hong Kong respectively. She was the awarded scholar of the Fulbright Scholarship (USA) to do the research in New York Columbia University. She is also a grantee of Asian Cultural Council scholarship. Apart from writing music, she also engages in arrangement, performance and music education. Tang's recent works include The Sunflowers, commissioned for the "Yu Kwang-chung's Poetry in Music" concert; Sixty, for The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chung Chi College 60th Anniversary Celebration Concert; Evacuation Order, a joint dance drama by Hong Kong Dance Company and Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra; Tree Rhapsody, an opera commissioned by Hong Kong Arts Festival; Mr Vampire, a dance drama commissioned by New Vision Arts Festival; Love, Accidentally, music for Mui Cheuk-yin's dance theatre, and a commissioned orchestral work for Dr. Helmut Sohmen Composition Prize. Frozen Tears I and Frozen Tears II are the first two of the planned three-movement suite based on E. E. Cumming's love poem I Carry You in My Heart. The lyrics are based on the first and second stanzas of the poem, while the final movement is still being conceived. Although many view the poem as a romantic speech and often adopt the text for wedding hymns, Tang takes a drastic approach and reinterpret the poem into an elegy. The introduction begins in a calm note D on alto, slowly developing into gestures with soprano; the tension is heightened with intensifying dynamics and rhythmic activities in D Dorian mode. After the chorale-like section, soprano starts with the note D sharp, and is joined in turns by low murmurs and a tug-of-war between the words "fear" and "fate", evolving into a cry of the unconsoled. The subsequent second movement is written in D natural minor. Its bright tonality and the style resembling world music, forms a great contrast with the first movement, as if relieving from grief. Influence from electronic music is evident in the huge dynamic contrast at the beginning, the multi-part arpeggios, alto's rapid scat singing, and the addition of beat-boxing. In the latter section, soprano sings a majestic melody while the other parts sing in homophonic syncopation. With the addition of beat-boxing, the movement has a strong flavour of progressive rock.
Northern Lights
1978) Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978)
Named Prelude despite its Latin text, I conceived of this piece as a concert opener, a type of introductory or entrance music. Of simple ABA form, its joyful and celebratory starting and closing sections frame a more serene middle part. Prelude synthesises ideas from two of my earlier choral works, Nya Vägar and Exsultate, Jubilate.
Northern Lights is my most Norwegian production in years; composed in an attic outside of Oslo at Christmas time in 2007, it is one of the few works I have written in Norway since I moved to New York in 2001. The US is my home now, so I guess my work has been increasingly reflecting my love for American music, writing and scenery. Most of all, this piece and its text is about beauty. About a 'terrible' powerful beauty, although the music is quite serene on the surface. Looking out from the attic window that Christmas in Oslo, over a wintry lake under the stars, I was thinking about how this 'terrible' beauty is so profoundly reflected in the northern lights, or aurora borealis, which, having grown up in the southern part of the country, I have only seen once or twice in my life. It is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena I've ever witnessed, and has such a powerful, electric quality that must have been both mesmerising and terrifying to people in the past, when no one knew what it was and when much superstition was attached to these experiences. Northern Norway is one of the areas where aurora borealis is easiest to spot, thanks to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream, which makes the area habitable. At www.visitnorway.com, you can find incredible pictures of the aurora borealis phenomenon, pictures that also greatly inspired this piece. Programme notes: Ola Gjeilo
Pulchra es amica mea, suavis et decora sicut Jerusalem, terribilis ut castorum acies ordinata. Averte oculos tuos a me quia ipsi me avolare fecerunt.
Thou art beautiful, O my love, sweet and comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army set in array. Turn away thy eyes from me, for they have made me flee away.

Prelude
Northern Lights
1978) Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978)
Named Prelude despite its Latin text, I conceived of this piece as a concert opener, a type of introductory or entrance music. Of simple ABA form, its joyful and celebratory starting and closing sections frame a more serene middle part. Prelude synthesises ideas from two of my earlier choral works, Nya Vägar and Exsultate, Jubilate. I reworked my favourite parts from each of those compositions and created a new and what I hope a strong and moving piece of music. Many thanks to Finnish choir Lyran who commissioned Nya Vägar in 2005 and to all the choirs who have performed Exsultate, Jubilate so beautifully. Programme notes: Ola Gjeilo

Gloria
Ubi Caritas
Ola Gjeilo
Ola Gjeilo
Gloria was commissioned by St. Olaf College, Sigrid Johnson and her wonderful Manitou Singers, for whom the work is dedicated, and it was first performed at the St. Olaf Christmas Festival 2007, which also aired on PBS. I went to visit St. Olaf College in Minnesota around Thanksgiving that year, to hear the piece in rehearsal and witness the great level of musicianship at the College. It's always such a thrilling experience to hear one's work be played by choir and orchestra together, it must be one of the most perfect combinations of musical forces.
Ubi Caritas has been one of my most performed and popular pieces since it was written in 2001, and I am thrilled that the work is now available for American choirs through Walton Music. As with Maurice Duruflé's beautiful Ubi Caritas from 1960, this setting also draws inspiration from the Gregorian chant tradition. While reflective of the chant style, this composition is entirely original and is not based on any existing chants. Ubi Caritas received its North American premiere at the 2007 ACDA National Convention in Miami, where it was performed by the exciting new Swedish professional choir, Voces Nordicae. The piece is dedicated to this outstanding ensemble and its wonderful conductor, Lone Larsen.
This version for SSAA choir and four hand piano makes the piece logistically easier to perform, and has its own identity; the piano accompaniment is meant as a creative substitution for the orchestra, not merely as a piano reduction for rehearsals.
Programme notes: Ola Gjeilo
I would like to thank St. Olaf College, Sigrid Johnson, and Philip Brunelle, who got the ball rolling in the first place. Programme notes: Ola Gjeilo

Dark Night of the Soul
Dark Night of the Soul was written in 2010, and premiered that same year by Phoenix Chorale with Charles Bruffy, myself at the piano and four local string-players. The piece was commissioned by and dedicated to my dear, sweet friend and publisher, Gunilla Luboff, in memory of her husband, choral legend Norman Luboff. The text, three stanzas from St John of Cross’ (1542–92) magical poem Dark Night of the Soul, was suggested to me by Joel Rinsema, Executive Director of the Phoenix Chorale, and I fell in love with its colourful and passionate spirituality instantly. One of the main things I wanted to do in this piece was to make the choir and piano more equal; usually the piano is relegated to a very generic accompanying role in choral music, as opposed to strings or orchestra, which will often have a much more independent and prominent role where it is allowed to shine as well. So there is a lot of give and take between the choir and piano here; often the piano is accompanying the choir, but sometimes the choir is accompanying the piano (or violin a couple of times), with the choir kind of taking the role of a string orchestra. I just love the sound of voices singing chords on “Ooh” or “Mmm”, it creates a sound that can be so amazingly evocative and warm, especially when doubled by a string quartet. To me, that sound combination has a similar effect to a great synth pad, only it feels more organic and alive. But mainly, what this piece was really about was just the sheer desire to write something that could hopefully convey a lot of the grace and passion that is so strong and pulsating in the poem! Programme notes: Ola Gjeilo
One dark night, fired with love's urgent longings - ah, the sheer grace! I went out unseen, my house being now all stilled. In darkness, and secure, By the secret ladder, disguised, - ah, the sheer grace! in darkness and concealment, my house being now all stilled.
On that glad night, in secret, for no one saw me, - ah, the sheer grace! nor did I look at anything, with no other light or guide than the one that burned in my heart.
- ah, the sheer grace! Dark Night of the Soul.

The Belly of Chorus Chan Wai-Yu
CU Chorus' ritual of admission takes place during our late night meal; with the instruction of the music director, one removes the steam hot cover of a clay pot rice with one's bare hands, uses chopsticks to separate the beef from the rice, mixes it thoroughly into the rice and breaks an egg to the pot. It sounds like a gourmets group, not a chorus, you may argue. Well, we are a youthful choir made up of gourmets. CUHK students call late night meals after dinner time Sik Siu. The chorus regularly goes to the reputed Chan Hon Kee Restaurant in Tai Po after rehearsal. I attended a welcoming Sik Siu after the first rehearsal of the year, so as a new member I attended just to get to know other members. "Dismiss! Off we go Sik Siu," announced the conductor after the second rehearsal. "Again?" I wondered. My hostel is located just next to railway station so I went along anyway. Everyone was chatty and it was noisily fun. Thereafter, I got used to this ritual every Monday. We celebrate our peers' birthdays, we celebrate the formation of a new committee, we talk about rehearsal and music matters and, sometimes, host an exco meeting! I remember very vividly our music director said to me during the audition, "we are not here only for fun, we are very serious" and I cannot agree more when I saw how they argue fiercely on important matters over that tiny dining table. This is all because we love the choir so much and want it to become a better one. Every time we go for Sik Siu, we sing as we walk down to the station and take not the school bus as we go downhill. If you happen to hear a group of people singing as they walk on Monday late evenings, it is very possible that you hear us chanting before we go to fill our belly. So what do we sing? Well, it can be the song have we been practising over and over that night, or one that we simply love so much. When a melody pops up in one's head and one sings it, others will join in. The feeling of singing along the hilly roads, filling up skies with melodies is awesome. This happens everywhere: on a beach, in a barbeque site, on the streets, at Star Ferry Pier, at the airport, in a church or even in an outdoor food stall. Sounds crazy? This is all because we are young enough and we love singing so much.

Quite some people have asked me if I could still sing in CU Chorus after graduation. Sure we can! One third of our members are graduates. They work in daytime and take care of various matters like booking venues, printing promotion materials, ticketing, looking for sponsors, accountancy and so on. The thing that made
them stay and take up all these heavy burdens is, I believe, that simple love for music, for the people and for the chorus. Witnessing their devotion and passion, new members start loving the people, and everything about the chorus soon after joining. We usually take the last train after Sik Siu to go home. After a long day of work and lessons, plus an almost three-hour rehearsal, all of us are flat out. But we want to be together for just a bit more time, we want to see and chat with each other, or we have to raise some administrative matters. That's the reason we go Sik Siu, no matter how tired we are. We are a group of music makers who love music, our chorus and everyone in it. I hope this tradition, which brings old and new members together, will go on and on. Chan Wai-yu is the chairperson of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus

"Dismiss!
