Choral Workshop with Babεl

With an aim to bridge choral music between Canada and China, Babεl visited Hong Kong in July 2019 and hosted a series of choral workshops with local schools in Hong Kong. A total of six sessions were organized with five participating schools. During the week, Babεl introduces a number of choral works composed by Canadian Composers to the young singers in Hong Kong, exploring the undiscovered beauty of Canadian choral music culture. Dr Elaine Choi and her team introduces a number of lively rehearsal techniques to conduct rehearsals for the singers, providing guidance and refinements to the work of the choirs. “Canadian Choral Mosaic” is the closing concert for the Workshop, showcasing the work of the choirs over the week. Babεl would also be performing in the concert. As the guest choir and the organizer of the event, CU Chorus would present two cantonese choral works, which would be performed in their upcoming Taipei tour at the Taipei International Choral Festival.

Babεl

Babεl began as a dream to bridge choral music between Canada and China. The SATB ensemble is dedicated to supporting Canadian composers through national and international performances and recordings of their work. We also hope to play a pivotal role in the Canadian choral world - bringing work from contemporary composers in China back to Canada. We are hitting the ground running, ending our first season with a tour to Hong Kong and Taiwan in July 2019. This tour will be an opportunity to collaborate with the CU Chorus, workshop with aspiring high-school musicians, and perform with the sacred music ensemble, Vox Antiqua.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus Music Director and Conductor: Leon Chu The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus was founded in 1972 by a group of CUHK students. With Leon Chu as the current Music Director and Conductor, the Chorus presents a range of diversely-themed performances, making an influence to broaden the horizon of local choral music scene. The Chorus has constantly engaged in exchange activities with choirs in the mainland China and Southeast Asia, and in recent years the Chorus was also invited to various large-scale performances in overseas music festivals. CU Chorus has been actively commissioning new works by Hong Kong composers, so as to develop a unique and local voice in Hong Kong choral music. In 2014, the Chorus released its first commercial album Spring Breeze Kisses My Face — The Choral Music of Jan Tien-hao on The Modern Audio label, to such popular acclaim that it is awarded as one of the Best Sales Releases (Classical and Operatic Works Recording) in the IFPI Hong Kong Top Sales Music Award 2014. CU Chorus is releasing their 2nd album, “Sing Our Own Sing - Selected Hong Kong Choral Works in Cantonese” in August 2019, showcasing the Cantonese choral composition and arrangement commissioned by the Chorus in the recent years.

Conductor Leon Chu Born in a grassroot family, Leon Chu did not receive any formal music training during his teens. His first encounter with Mahler’s Symphonies sparkled his interest in music to pursue his musical studies, started with the Centralised Scheme of Music Training for Senior Secondary Students, and percussion studies with Choy Lap-tak. Upon his admission to the Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he joined a number of choruses and orchestras, and studied vocal under Albert Lim. He later studied choral conducting under renowned European masters including Kåre Hanken, Theodora Pavlovitch, and Gábor Hollerung. In 2014, Mr. Chu attained the Master degree of Choral Conducting from the University of Saint Joseph, Macau, under the tutelage of Colin Mawby, Nancy Telfer and Pedro Monteiro. Recently he furthered his vocal studies under Myra Chih. In 2006, Leon Chu took up the position as the Music Director of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus.
