Interdisciplinary PhD Healthcare Genetics
The Interdisciplinary Healthcare Genetics Doctorate, provided through the School of Nursing, offers individuals from multiple health-related disciplines the opportunity to achieve a terminal degree. The curriculum builds partnerships with more than six disciplines focusing on genetics, health policy and ethics, theory development, and quantitative and qualitative research methods. Three specialty research tracks promote advanced study: • Interventionists • Translational Bench Science • Ethics and Health Policy The purpose of Clemson University’s interdisciplinary PhD in Healthcare Genetics is to prepare interdisciplinary scientists to: extend the knowledge base relevant to healthcare genomics, translate research to advance the application of genomics in healthcare, and collaborate in interdisciplinary research and practice. Program Requirements: The coordinator of the PhD program in Healthcare Genetics, in concert with individual faculty advisors, will work with each student to determine the requirements for their program of study. • Students without previous biochemistry courses will be required to take GEN 302 (3,0) Molecular and General Genetics or equivalent. • 34 hours of 12 core courses. • 18 hours of specialty cognate seminars and electives. • 18 hours of dissertation. Courses include a variety of online, web-enhanced and traditional classroom settings. Core courses are available at Clemson University as well as a variety of other institutions.

Admissions Requirements: Students applying for the interdisciplinary PhD in the Healthcare Genetics program should have at least a bachelor’s degree in a related health science discipline from an accredited institution. Other requirements will include: • Master’s (MS/MA) thesis or publications. (BS applicants entering without a data-based research experience will be required to satisfactorily complete a research project utilizing the 6 hours of cognate electives prior to beginning the core courses in the doctoral program). • GPR of 3.0+ in all college coursework. • Competitive GRE scores. • Curriculum vita. • Written statement of career goals. • Three letters of recommendation from professionals, which address research and scholarly potential. • Departmental interview.
