Most organizations agree that effectively holding others accountable is one of a leader’s biggest challenge. An effective leader must be able to talk about, asses and affirm the contributions of those they lead, and the improvements they need to carry out to strengthen those contributions. 2. Focus on Fairness: sometimes, team members feel like leaders have favorites within their team. Try evaluating people’s work in a way that it is connected to the person it derives from. Does every member in your team play by the same rules? Is the playing field even? 1. Make Dignity the Foundation: make sure your employees feel that you genuinely care about their work, how they achieve results and how you can lead them towards bettering themselves, instead of blank judgement.
3. Make Restoration, not Blame, the Goal: people often mistake accountability with blaming. Did the person have the resources, skills, team support, and realistic timelines to be successful? Work with your employee towards closing down those gaps, instead of shaming them for their mistakes.
