Adult Classes CERAMICS Beginning Wheel Throwing | Instructor: Jane Hendley Learn how to create basic pottery forms, such as a cup, bowl, and plate using a potter’s wheel. This class covers techniques such as centering and throwing a cylinder, while emphasizing both function and aesthetics. Mondays, July 11-August 29, 6-8:30pm Cost: $180, plus $35 materials fee Intermediate Wheel Throwing | Instructor: Jane Hendley Improve your skills on the potter’s wheel in this ceramics class for students with previous exposure to wheel throwing techniques. CONFECTIONARY ARTS Cake Decorating & Design | Instructor: Ann Sparks Learn basic confectionary arts skills while designing and decorating cakes. Prepare, frost, and decorate with a variety of techniques using buttercream icing. Round, star, leaf, and specialty tips will be used to create borders, flowers, and unique seasonal and special occasion decorations for each cake. Prepared and frosted cakes required for most classes. Most supplies included. DIGITAL ART Digital Art & Experimentation | Instructor: Andrew Indelicato This class will focus on digital art and all its iterations. Students will focus on photoshop, installation, web browser art, and GIFS. Some knowledge of photoshop is recommended for this class. We will use cameras, video projectors, lights, and sound to make work. This class will push your creativity to limits you never thought of. Please bring the laptop you will be working on to class. DRAWING Basic Drawing | Instructor: Andrew Indelicato Learn how to interpret and record objects in a realistic manner. Develop basic skills as you learn drawing principals, techniques, and explore a variety of drawing materials. You will come away from this class with confidence in your ability to draw. Wednesdays, July 13 – August 31, 7-9pm Cost: $145, plus $35 materials fee Pen & Ink Illustrations | Instructor: Scarlett Sams Learn illustrating techniques in pen and ink on illustration board or watercolor paper. Explore illustrating in black and white from florals, still lifes, and photographs and then add watercolor washes. Topics covered include pointillism, cross hatching, use of positive and negative space, shading, watercolor washes, and elements of design. FIBER ARTS DIY Tapestry Weaving | Instructor: Patrick Carter This class is an introduction to the meditative craft of tapestry weaving. Students will learn weaving vocabulary and develop an understanding of woven structures using DIY methods. Students will leave class with finished samples and a project to continue working on at home. Materials provided but feel free to bring your own yarns to work with. Nuno Felting | Instructor: Magi Shapiro Create a light Summer scarf using the nuno felting technique on cheesecloth or silk. Choose soft, colored wool fibers, yarns and curly wool locks to layout a design you create. Using wet felting methods, you’ll bind the wools together with the fabric into a single textile. Basic 8-Strand Kumihimo | Instructor: Pat Whitlow Learn the fun art of kumihimo cord braiding. No jewelry experience necessary. Students will be given a kumihimo loom and all supplies required to make a stylish bracelet. Tuesday, August 16, 7-9pm Cost: $30, plus $18 materials fee
MUSIC Develop new musical skills or improve upon what you have already learned with these individual lessons intended for the beginner to intermediate student. Journey through the history and culture of the uke and basic musicanship and techniques for creating music with this fantastic instrument. Basic chord shapes and strumming, as well as melodic single note playing will be covered. A basic knowledge of music reading will be helpful but not necessary. Saturday, August 13, 10am-2pm Cost: $70 Six String Primer – An Intro to Guitar (Part 1) | Instructor: Thomas Wakefield Learn essential fundamentals and techniques to give the beginning guitarist a strong foundation. Covered in this course are: proper flatpicking and fingerpicking techniques, instrument selection, tuning, systems for learning the notes on the fretboard, basic standard notation, tablature, and chord reading, mapping and melodies, and the C-A-G-E-D chord system. Jump start your musical pursuits while avoiding bad habits and pitfalls beginners often fall prey to. PHOTOGRAPHY Basic Digital Photography | Instructor: Arthur Stephens Learn about aperture and shutter functions and how ISO affects exposure. Compositional elements and guidelines are offered to improve images. This class covers variations in different focal length lenses and which lenses to use to achieve desired results. Students will also learn how to best use their camera’s built-in flash. This workshop provides a comprehensive overview on all the operations of your digital SLR camera. Cameras with interchangeable lenses are preferred for this course, but not required. Summer I: Saturday, July 16, 10am-4pm Summer II: Saturday, August 13, 10am-4pm Cost: $75 Digital Photography II | Instructor: Arthur Stephens Expand your photographic vision and knowledge as you delve into the next steps in the digital photography experience! Class will focus on portraiture, painting with light, night photography, and documentary work. Portraiture will teach students how to work with individual to group set-ups, posing, and lighting. Painting with Light continues where the basics class left off….students will learn about the use of dramatic and intimate lighting of a subject. Night photography reviews how to best photograph at night with and without additional lighting. With documentary photography students will learn photojournalistic approaches to shooting an event as if they were shooting for a magazine. It’s all about point of view! Students will need access to a tripod for the night photography portion of the class. Summer I: Thursdays, July 14 – August 4, 6:30-9pm Summer II: Thursdays, August 11 – September 1, 6:30-9pm Cost: $120 Adobe Lightroom | Instructor: Arthur Stephens Lightroom has become the leading program in the photography industry for organizing and editing images. In this workshop, learn to import, archive, and edit your digital photos. Students with Lightroom loaded on their laptops are encouraged to also pre-load photographs and bring a thumb drive with at least 30-50 images to learn the workflow. If you do not already own the program, download the 30-day trial program at www.Adobe.com prior to class. Students without laptops may learn about the program and workflow via handouts on basic functions of importing, watermarking, archiving, renaming, editing, and more. PRINTMAKING Paper Marbling: Acrylic Marbling and Japanese Suminagashi | Instructor: Lindsey Mears Participants in this one day workshop will learn two methods of paper marbling, one with acrylic and watercolor pigment manipulated on a thickened liquid, the other a Japanese technique of floating inks on water. Both yield a multitude of undulating patterns and decoration, often seen in historic endpapers. Students will learn the basics of materials and techniques, so they can recreate the set-up at home, and spend the majority of the day making their own marbled papers. Paper preparation and finishing will also be covered. All materials provided. Saturday, July 9, 10am-4pm Cost: $100, plus $25 materials fee
VISUAL ARTS Pastel Painting & Drawing | Instructor: Linda Leah Wolitz Indulge your inner artist with this vibrant and beautiful medium! Pastels are a dry form of pure pigment mixed with a binder to hold the color together. They offer the same bold color as oil paints minus the liquid and the mess! Weekly demonstrations include discussion of the medium as well as individual painting and instruction. Summer I: Tuesdays, July 12 – August 30, 3-5pm Summer II: Wednesdays, July 13 – August 31, 10am-12pm Summer III: Thursdays, July 14 – Sept. 1, 7-9pm Cost: $180, plus materials discussed with instructor prior to class Bustin’ Loose Watercolor Experimentation (Ages 15+) | Instructor: Roz Berlin Time to bust loose from traditional watercolor techniques and materials! Experiment with painting on Yupo, Masa paper, canvas board, decorative papers, as well as using acrylic mediums and Gesso. An introduction to liquid concentrated watercolors and acrylics will be explored. Mixed Media will be the main focus. A great class for journaling artists! Students may work on personal projects or try creative summer themed paintings. Tropical and Summer color charts will be studied and created by students. The goal is to PLAY with your paints! Tuesdays, July 12-August 16, 6-9pm Cost: $180, plus $75 new student or $15 returning student materials fee Encaustic Painting (all levels) | Instructor: Lynda Ray Create dynamic works of art using melted wax as you explore encaustic painting, a process that produces impressive results with luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. Beginners as well as working artists are welcome! Demonstrations and experimentation allow students to learn techniques such as melting through, line and edge, transfers, and texture and collage. Students can choose to practice all of these methods or just the ones that interest them. At the end of the series, student will be familiar with a range of techniques which they can use later to develop new work. Paint, equipment, tools and small practice panels will be supplied. Students may bring wood panels up to 9”x12” if they wish to make larger, more resolved works. Students will learn to paint orchids, bamboo, plum blossoms and more while exploring the relationship between artists and their work. Starting with the face, students will complete a portrait in the medium of their choice. Assisted by a live, clothed model, students will study faces, skin tones, drapery, lighting, shading, color, and elements of design in their work. Young Rembrandts Summer Draw-Tooning Fun (Ages 6-13) | Instructor: Young Rembrandts Young Rembrandts’ two most popular programs in one great workshop! Open to every young artist that has a passion for drawing and wants to learn new skills to get better. This week will include both drawing AND cartooning lessons sure to excite! Learn techniques to draw still life, portraits, graphic art, line art, abstract art, and much more! Create cartoons of people, objects, animals, food, and many other exciting subjects. Edible Education Edible Essentials (Ages 7-15) This is a great session for elementary and middle school students. They will learn the “fun”damentals of food prep and cooking. Students will learn basic recipes such as how to make omelets, smoothies, kale chips, quesadillas, and brownies. A great beginner class! Mon – Thurs, June 20-23, 9am-12pm Cost: $200 Down on the Farm (Ages 6-10) Meet the chickens! Grow your own veggies, and learn to cook seasonal produce straight from the farms of Virginia. Fresh tomato soup, local berry trifles, peach tarts, and corn fritters are just a few of the beautiful foods young campers will prepare. Mon – Thurs, July 18-21, 1-4pm Cost: $200 Food Around the World (Ages 6-15) Spend a week traveling the world through fantastic food adventures. From English tea scones to Aussie chocolate cakes, and Japanese sushi, creating delicious foods from abroad is a great way to learn about cool and unusual foods. This is a fun baking class where you will practice math, science, and more while creating the best of the summer harvest. All Star Tech VA LEGO® Robotics (Ages 5-10) | Instructor: All Star Tech VA Campers will explore mechanisms and structural design through the use of LEGO® Technology. Through the investigation of simple and motorized machines, the use of gears and sensors, and through programming the robots they build, students will learn the basics of physics and the concepts behind real machines. The class is project and team based, providing training and experience in teamwork and project management skills as well as training in mechanical engineering, problem solving, debugging, and presentation skills. Campers will learn how to use fruits and vegetables to create green energy. Campers will also learn about DNA and RNA using replicated modules that cover DNA structure, replication and transcription, coding, and translation. Campers will understand electricity through the use of circuit boards. This camp allows campers to learn STEM skills in a fun, creative way! TEEN CLASSES Teen Wheel Throwing | Instructor: Jane Hendley Learn how to create basic pottery forms using fundamental techniques such as centering and throwing a cylinder. Basic pottery forms such as a cup, bowl, and plate will also be explored. Wednesdays, July 13 – August 31, 4:30-6pm Cost: $140, plus $30 materials fee DIY Tapestry Weaving for Teens | Instructor: Patrick Carter This class is an introduction to the meditative craft of tapestry weaving. Students will learn weaving vocabulary and develop an understanding of woven structures using DIY methods. Students will leave the class with finished samples and a project to continue working on at home. Materials are provided but feel free to bring your own yarns to work with. Teen Watercolors (Ages 12-17) | Instructor: Roz Berlin Flip flop into class for lots of experimental fun with watercolors. Assorted projects will introduce the student to new watercolor mediums and different projects to paint on. Materials fee covers in-class supplies and a set of paints. HAPPY HOUR ART – PAINTING PARTY Every 2nd Saturday of the month! (Excluding July) (Ages 21+) Grab your friends and get ready for an afternoon of fun and creativity. First, enjoy wine tastings from Jacey Vineyards from 1-2pm then grab a brush and follow the leader to create a seasonal masterpiece to take home. Each night features a different project led by artist, Nancy Jacey. Price includes tasting, all project supplies, one complimentary beverage, light refreshments, and lots of fun!

Tip: Register Early! To ensure a class you are interested in is available when you register, please register as early as possible. If a class has met the minimum by a week out, registrations for that class will continue to be accepted that week unless the class is full. Another reason to register early: classes frequently sell out, and sometimes very quickly!

CLASS REGISTRATION
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes are open to adults 18 years old and up unless otherwise stated. All registrations must be accompanied by full payment. Payment types accepted: cash, check*, MasterCard or VISA. Make checks* payable to: The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen or CACGA. Please use the form below when registering. A minimum number of students are required for each class/workshop/camp to be held. Registrations are reviewed 1 week prior to the start date to determine whether or not a class has enough participants or if the class needs to be cancelled. A $10 last minute registration fee applies to registrations received within 7 days of a class starting. * If you choose to pay by check and your check is dishonored, you agree to pay a service fee of $35, or any higher amount allowed by law, and we may electronically debit or draft your account for this fee. Also, if your check is returned for insufficient or uncollected funds, your check may be electronically re-presented for payment.
