Abstract Expressionism................... Instructor: Emily Ellingsworth
During the Abstract Expressionism movement, artists applied paint on large scale surfaces in efforts to show emotions and subconscious thoughts, often painting using broad gestures and no detectable subject matter. Using large brushes or unconventional tools they flung and forced the paint around. They gathered and used materials from the world around them to create intimate vignettes into the moments when the paintings were made. This historical genre encompasses a wide range of styles and approaches; its these artists’ sentient relationship to materials that connects the Abstract Expressionists. We will not copy masterworks in this class, but instead will use and combine their techniques to make original images, embodying the experimental spirit of the movement.
