ART OF MOVEMENT CERAMICS NEW! FOLKLORIC BELLY DANCING Instructor: Janine Turner

Come join a unique type of folkloric belly dance in which you learn the “vocabulary” (moves) of the dance and the non-verbal “cues” alerting you to which moves are coming next. Then just “follow the leader” as the entire dance group appears to move together in synchronicity. This type of dance is called “American Tribal Style®” (ATS®) belly dance, as it is a “melting pot” that joins together traditional dance moves from various countries such as India, Spain, Persia, North Africa, and the Middle East into a unique whole. (ATS®) is a community dance that is low impact yet gets your body moving in a fun way. FIBER ARTS PINE NEEDLE BASKET COILING Instructor: Carol Busto

Learn how to use long pine needles, thread, and sewing needles to create an amazing coiled basket that is a true work of art. Different methods to start a basket, how to incorporate simple designs, and a variety of stitches will be discussed from a simple stitch to a V-stitch to back stitch. Intermediate students or those wishing to refresh their skills are welcome if they wish to seek help on projects or gain tips and tricks. KNITTING HATS

In this class learn how to knit in the round while becoming familiar with basic terminology on many hat patterns. Instructor provides step-by-step instructions and guidance as you knit a hat from a pattern of your choosing. Winter I: Mondays, Jan. 22 – Feb. 5, 1-3pm Winter II: Mondays, Jan. 22 – Feb. 5, 6-8pm $75, plus students will bring the following supplies: hat pattern (can be found online); 2 skeins of medium weight yarn (fuzzy yarn can be difficult when learning new knitting styles and is not encouraged); 1 pair of in-the-round knitting needles (connected needles- use yarn label to determine size); 1 set of double-sided needles (same size as needles in-the-round); 1 set of stoppers to go on the end of your double-sided needles (optional).

POKE IT TO LIFE: An Intro to Needle Felting Instructor: Katie Crawford

This class introduces students to the addictive realm of sculptural needle felting. This unique process involves poking un-spun wool with a barbed “felting needle” to knit the fibers together, creating felt. No sewing or patterns required. The repetitive process has a zen-like quality and the ability to produce incredibly engaging creatures. Create a mouse character while learning basic techniques for felting, attaching eyes and other accessories, and creating simple armatures. Experience the wonder of a character emerging from the palm of your hand! Saturday, Jan. 13, 10am-4pm $100, plus $15 materials fee

NEW! BEGINNER KNITTING – CHUNKY SCARF Instructor: Kathryn Sullivan

Learn how to knit and purl while creating a quick and trendy scarf or cowl. This class will teach you how to knit, purl, and create textures by alternating the two stitches in various ways. It will also provide you with the knowledge to read and follow basic knitting patterns. JEWELRY DESIGN INTRO TO WIRE WRAPPING – PENDANTS Instructor: Heather Thompson

Learn the basics of making wire wrapped pendants by using wire to enclose a cabochon stone using basic framing and bail-making techniques. Students MUST bring their own tools – wire cutters, flat nose pliers, and round nose pliers. Learn how to make a ring using only wire and stone. This class will focus on binding techniques, shaping wire, measuring and setting a stone on the ring mandrel. Learn the fundamentals of interlocking jump rings to make a bracelet using the versatile Byzantine chain weave that can be worn by men or women. Once mastered, explore various ways to use Byzantine segments to create beautiful jewelry. By the end of class, you’ll be wearing a bracelet that you created! All tools provided. Beads and fine wire are crocheted together to make this stunning necklace which appears very complicated but is actually very easy to make. The instructor will show students how to put this necklace together with cones on the ends. Knowledge of the crochet chain stitch is required. Explore the fundamentals of bluegrass and flatpicking fiddle tunes by revealing the most common chords and chord progressions used in the style, common tunes, strum patterns, and rhythm accompaniment, the use of the capo, Carter strumming, alternating bass, and melodic/solo techniques such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, double stops, and crosspicking. PAPER ARTS PAPER QUILLING (Ages 8+) Instructor: Deb Booth

Quilling is the art of curling and swirling thin strips of paper into colorful designs and shapes, which are then glued to a background. Learn about aperture and shutter functions and how ISO affects exposure. Compositional elements and guidelines are offered to improve images. This class covers variations in different focal length lenses and which lenses to use to achieve desired results. Students will also learn how to best use their camera’s built-in flash. NEW! SERENDIPITY: EXPLORING ACRYLICS & RUBBING ALCOHOL Instructor: Jill Powell NEW INSTRUCTOR!

This workshop introduces beginner and practicing artists to how mixing acrylic paint and rubbing alcohol creates fascinating chemical reactions. Watch how paint is physically moved around the canvas by the alcohol and how it creates unique and vibrant colors. Practice and experiment with different colors and methods to learn how to create a finished piece or the start of a piece that can later be manipulated or built upon to create more resolved works. While the process is serendipitous, methods to affect the end result are also explored. No experience required! Please note: Artwork will need to dry for at least 24 hours and be polymer sealed once dry. Students will be able to pick up their completed, dry work one week following class. ENCAUSTIC PAINTING Instructor: Lynda Ray

Create dynamic works of art using melted wax as you explore encaustic painting, a process that produces luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. Beginners as well as working artists are welcome! Demonstrations and experimentation allow students to learn techniques such as melting and fusing, line and edge, transfers, and texture and collage. Students can choose to practice all of these methods or just the ones that interest them. Paint, equipment, and small practice panels will be supplied. Acrylic and watercolor students of all levels will increase their overall painting knowledge while exploring new techniques each week. This will be a crash course for beginning young print makers. Learn different mono printing techniques with different textures, drawing, and collaging techniques. PAPER QUILLING (Ages 8+) Instructor: Deb Booth

Quilling is the art of curling and swirling thin strips of paper into colorful designs and shapes which are then glued to a background. Learn basic quilling techniques and how to create basic quilling shapes. Each student will work on a 5"x7" piece of their own design. No experience necessary! VISUAL ARTS FOR TEENS TEEN WHEEL THROWING Instructor: Jane Hendley
