Jingle bells jingle bells culture all the way Oh, what fun it is to shop with locals all the way Hey! Jingle bells jingle bells Culturestore the way Oh, what fun it is to shop on a local online store all day It is the holiday season! That time of the year when we are able to forget about all our worries and the nonsense we faced throughout the year, only for a few weeks, and focus on FFF (family, fun and

fashion). The important of them all being FASHION. Oh yeah, fashion. There is no better feeling than going out with your family for Christmas shopping. The groceries, appliances, and clothes. Ever wondered why we always look for the perfect shoe, dress, scarf or weave during the festive season? There is quite an easy answer to all that: we like to be seen or to stand out during this time of the year or it could simply because we all want to look el-

egant and classy because our distant relatives are coming for the month. The relatives excuse is just a front to tell your best friend that you are going holiday shopping even though they (relatives) are really coming. It is all about being seen as well as rising from all the stress and frustration that you were facing throughout the year. Having your favourite outfit on is the best feeling one could ever imagine. This is a new movement that we believe in, and a journey that we are really excited about. Come on board! In return we received criticism, a whole plate of it. Names. They give us a title. They define who we are. They are inspired by certain events, people, places or sometimes derived from the family generation. As good as it might sound to have a name, it is not easy to come up with one. Once again, the Culturestore family was faced with a huge obstacle that would either make us or break us. Coming up with a name… We asked almost everyone for the new name of what is going to be the greatest and best fashion magazine. It was not easy. We thought that if we could take the word “Culture” and find different meanings of it in the eleven official languages we have in South Africa. For instance, in isiZulu we would get “usiko” and so on. “The birth of a new Culture” is not an ideal name for a magazine and therefore we had to let it go. It was good for a first issue but not for eternity…

the time will eventually get old and “out-dated”. We understand the whole concept of sticking to one direction as well as not focussing on too many things at once. What if there is a lot of talent? What if the so-called “culture” that we are tuned into is not only about clothes? Too many what ifs. So, in this issue and issues that will come after of our monthly magazine we touch base on what we believe is the true and ideal culture, exposing you to a bit of everything. We will be giving you new and up-coming brands. So basically, brands that are underrated and those which are still young and fresh, as well as your favourite brands. Not all of them will make it at once in this issue we will give you piece by piece with every issue having its portion of new brands. Our business model is to design and manufacture a unique fashion for the youth. Our business is overviewed as a unique local street wear brand, urban street wear to be specific. A pillar is used as the brands symbol to represent strength and stability, as well as to represent the letter ‘I’, the first letter of the word ‘Icon”. When we started being aware of what we looked like and what fashion style impressed us, we realized that there was no one in the market supplying what we were going for. The gap between this demand and supply gave birth to Icon Wear Why Icon By definition an icon is a person or thing that is revered or idolised. As a brand we strive to inspire through fashion as well as through values. We believe that ‘the way you dress is an extension of who you are’. Hence, we came up with a phrase “wear Icon, feel like an Icon and work diligently towards being one”. CAPTURING THE MOMENT

JR We always hear people saying that we must live in the moment. That tomorrow is not promised. True, but what if we could not only live in the moment but also CAPTURE it. Another trend, movement or culture that is hitting the streets with a wave is photography.

Not your typical selfies or group-orientated photos but professional photography. These photographers are everywhere and anywhere. We have decided to give you more about these people’s experiences and how they fell in love with the art of photography and at their will they will share their works and pieces. Once again, we will not put everything in one issue. If you are from around Pretoria, you have most probably met him or seen him around. Meet Jr ecko. A young photographer from Pretoria.

Why start photography? “Funny enough I have always loved taking pictures, but I have always taken pictures using my phone. This was from an early age, but I never knew that this was going to be or could be a career. In 2016 at an event here in Pretoria; I was tak-

ing pictures using my phone. After taking the pictures I would put them up on social media and the event organisers approached me and offered me a job. I took it. And before I knew it, I was doing it for a living and that it how I got into photography. Most importantly and overall though; I got

into photography because I love capturing memories, the scenery of the environment, capturing peoples’ moments and all these other things. Basically, someone found me and liked what I did, and I started making a living out of it.

of a certain place and we would work together in improving that graphic and make it a masterpiece. Another thing that inspires me is the amount of magazines that I study, movies that I watch as well as other people’s photography; especially American photographers. I haven’t found a South African photographer that does it for me, I feel like they all have the same style. My family and the people around me are also an inspiration along with my city. I feel like Pretoria will always be an inspiration for me.”

Socially Incorrect. What is it?

“Socially Incorrect is a creative agency. Socially Incorrect is an idea. Socially Incorrect is a clothing brand. Socially incorrect is a business that I started with my best friends. In 2016 we then decided that we will make it a company that will give opportunities to people like, creatives (photographers, graphic designers, and content producers), basically we show people how to get to a certain level or help them get to that level. We do this by allowing them to design for clients and certain clothing items. More than anything we wish that Socially Incorrect would be something that the youth of Pretoria could identify and be in tune with. Socially Incorrect is a group that is trying to gather all the Culture in Pretoria, put it into one thing and give it to the world. We do marketing, videography, photography, and we are also involved in the clothing business. We started with three people and have grown, this was all by gathering the talents of everyone we met along the way.

What can you say to upcoming and aspiring photographers?

“thing is, no one taught me photography. No one told me what is right or what is wrong. This has become my backbone and I am passing it down. Do not let anyone tell you what to do and how to do it, just pick up the camera and start taking pictures. Basically, do what you want to do and take a picture of whatever you want to capture.

What drives you and inspires you?

“I was always into cooking from an early age, to think that I would watch my gran make vetkoeks and bake and enjoy helping her while she would do those things. With all that she would cook for us, I always wanted to know how she made it. I then had to start cooking for myself and siblings when we were living with our dad. It all started with me making pancakes and then started making full meals. Cooking shows were my plug and entertainment, but I really did not aspire to them. See my inspiration came when I saw that every time, I cooked I felt happy, it was my utopia. For most people in my field cooking is all about the science behind it. For me, cooking is really about making other people happy and satisfied; to see them smile and filled with joy after eating. That is what it is about. Food gave me a purpose in life. It made me come alive

After all that reading and personal insight it is time to fix our eyes and appetite onto what Wendy has to share with us this festive season. So, get your cutlery and ingredients in order and let’s prepare simple easy meals.

Starter A simple fruit platter. All you need is a portion of all your favourite foods. Slice and dice, then serve on a dish. This is really good as an appetiser before the main meal.

Main dish Tzatziki (a meze platter) what you need: • Boerewors meatballs • Chicken breasts (kabab) • Pita bread • Garlic (a spoon) • Yoghurt 250ml • Cucumber • Olive oil • Thyme, Pepper and Salt Method and instruction 1. Cut a cucumber cord in half and grate it. 2. Take a spoon of chopped garlic and mix it with the plain yo-

ghurt(250ml) with the grated cucumber and add a pinch of salt. 3. Transfer mixture into a small bowl. This will be your tzatziki. 4. Carefully remove the boerewors skin and make meat balls from the skinned boerewors. 5. Preheat the stove at level 4 and with a frying pan allow the meatballs to sizzle. Hint: do not add any oil, boerewors in itself has enough fat for a good cook. 6. Cut chicken breasts into blocked pieces and put them into kabab sticks. 7. Put olive oil in a dif-

ferent frying pan and heat it (level 5) and cook chicken breasts with kabab. Add seasoning (thyme, pepper and salt) while cooking. 8. Cook for 15-20 minutes. 9. Toast pita bread on a clean pan at medium heat. Toast evenly only both sides. 10. Cut toasted pita bread into ¼ pieces 11. Plate everything as you desire. This festive month we wish you all the best. Let us come back next year fresh and ready to tackle the year.
