The Connection - April Edition

APRIL.2014

EASTER FAITH Mark 8:31-38: Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

My favorite theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, once meditated on this Scripture and observed several things. First, the call to discipleship occurs in connection with Jesus’ announcement of His suffering. But it was not just suffering; it was that He was rejected in His suffering so there could be no honor in what He suffered. Bonhoeffer said Jesus had to suffer and be rejected by virtue of divine necessity, and that any attempt at thwarting the necessary “is satanic,” because those attempts are not intent upon letting Him be the Christ. That’s why Jesus rebuked Peter, Bonhoeffer said, and only moments after Jesus had declared to Peter that he would be the rock upon which Christ’s church would be built. Thus, from its very inception, the church has taken offense at the notion of a suffering Christ. “It neither wants such a Lord nor does it, as the Church of Christ, want its Lord to force upon it the law of suffering.” (Bonhoeffer) Peter was not willing to accept it, and his unwillingness allowed Satan’s influence to have a foothold in the church.

That influence can still be seen, felt, experienced any time there is anything in the church that would tear the church away from the cross of its Lord. Bonhoeffer declares this means we are only His disciples in suffering and rejection, for we are under the law of His cross. But Bonhoeffer goes on to note that Jesus gives His disciples complete freedom for no one may ever be coerced into accepting both the suffering and the rejection. The key to being able to accept both fully is self-denial, to deny ourselves and our desires and our will so thoroughly as to only know Him, only see Him, only follow Him. It’s to forget ourselves to the point of no longer knowing ourselves so that we might only know Him. Suffering comes from our commitment to Jesus Christ and the cross of Christ comes to us as the suffering tied to being a Christian. The disgrace of that suffering is the rejection. For all of us who claim to be Christian there is a cross of suffering and rejection, ready, appointed, and measured by God, according to Bonhoeffer. And the measure is different for each of us. Still it is the “one cross” that is laid upon every Christian and it stands at the beginning of real community with Jesus Christ and in the church which bears His name, for only through this kind of suffering and rejection will reconciliation come. As Bonhoeffer wrote, “Those who are not prepared to take up the cross, those who are not prepared to give their life to suffering and rejection by others, lose community with Christ, and are not disciples. But those who lose their life in discipleship, in bearing the cross, will find it again in discipleship itself, in the community of the cross with Christ. The opposite of discipleship is to be ashamed of Christ, of the cross, and to take offense at the cross . . . When a disciple picks up his or her own cross, it is actually Christ Himself who is thereby found.”
Another well-known theologian, Martin Luther, said it this way: “Things must happen not according to your own knowledge, but rather above your own knowledge; immerse yourself in the abandonment of understanding, and I will give you my understanding. Abandonment of understanding is real understanding; not knowing where you are going is the right way to know where you are going. . . Not the work you choose for yourself, not the suffering you think up for yourself, but what comes to you quite contrary to your choosing, thinking, desiring, that is where you must follow. . .” For that is where Jesus is calling us.

A little four-year-old girl held up her hand and said, “Yes, today is Palm Sunday.” The teacher exclaimed, “That is fantastic, that is wonderful. Now, does anyone know what next Sunday is?” The same little girl held up her hand and said, “Yes, next Sunday is Easter Sunday.” Once again the teacher said, “That is fantastic. Now, does anyone know what makes next Sunday Easter?” The same little girl responded and said, “Yes, next Sunday is Easter because Jesus rose from the grave,” and before the teacher could congratulate her, she kept on talking and said, “but if he sees his shadow...he has to go back in for seven weeks.”

I can imagine how people could get confused when hearing the story of Jesus’ resurrection for the first time. In the gospel of John, Chapter 20 deals with the disciples’ reactions to this Good News. Many thought Christ’s resurrection was a made-up story and they just couldn’t believe it. It was too good to be true. The women at the tomb thought someone had moved the body. Peter was checking out the whole story and was confused about what was happening. However, when people experienced the resurrected Savior, they believed. My prayer is that you’ll come to Christ Church this Easter and bring a friend, and that together we’ll encounter the resurrected Savior. May that encounter inspire us to commit our lives to follow Him and serve Him. When that happens, we’ll experience the reality of that resurrected Divine presence in us and come to know Him more fully. It is no longer a story. Christ is Risen!

It’s been around for a while in many versions, but I still get a kick out of Ben Haden’s story of a group of fouryear-olds who were gathered in a Sunday School class in Chattanooga. The teacher looked at the class and asked this question: “Does anyone know what today is?”

CONNECT–WELCOMING MINISTRIES APPRECIATION LUNCHEON SUNDAY, MARCH 30 • 12:30 PM • FAMILY LIFE CENTER If you serve on one of our Welcome and Outreach Ministries’ CONNECT teams, or are just interested in knowing more about what is happening in those areas, please join us for lunch on Sunday, March 30 at 12:30 pm in the Family Life Center. There, we will have the opportunity to hear from each of our team leaders about what is happening in their areas and where help is needed. If your heart is willing and so moved, this can be a training experience that leads you into meaningful service in one of our CONNECT ministries. There are several teams of Christ Church volunteers serving in various ways to help people “connect” with Christ Church on Sunday mornings. Right before each of our Sunday morning services, you can find a smiling face and receive a welcoming handshake from greeters at several of our entrances. At our Welcome Center, located in the church’s Gathering Hall, a volunteer is prepared to answer questions about our ministries and distribute the latest version of our Connection newsletter to those who come by. Both members and visitors enjoy the fellowship time offered between services in the Volunteer Center and Gathering Hall, with cookies and coffee provided by our Hospitality team. Did you ever wonder how we follow up on our visitors? If our guests have provided us with their phone number, they are sure to receive a welcoming phone call from one of the volunteers on our Call team. If they provide us with their address, our Call team also sends them a note in the mail. Our team of “Muggers” regularly delivers a Christ Church mug to the home of our first-time guests, as well. In recent weeks,

our Prayer Walk and Prayer Bike Ride teams have also gone beyond the walls of our church to connect with our neighbors in spiritual and welcoming ways. As visitors gain more interest in the church and participate in a New Member class, volunteer “shepherds” are also available to help guide them into more involvement. In the hub community that worships in the Family Life Center, two different teams are vital to connecting with visitors. The Welcome team greets everyone, passes out weekly the hub note, helps families find seats, and makes sure everyone feels at home. The Welcome team also escorts visitors to the Welcome Table where visitors sign up for nametags, get free goodies, and complete an information card. The Hospitality team prepares the carts that hold coffee, water, teas, and donuts. The hub wouldn’t feel like a welcoming place without these teams! Want to get involved? Come to our CONNECT Appreciation & Interest Luncheon to find out more!

LOUD AND CLEAR

WORSHIP DURING HOLY WEEK

by preston morgan

One of the most successful advertising campaigns of the past few decades was Verizon Wireless’ “Can You Hear Me Now?” series in which a Verizon worker with stylish eyeglasses tests the company’s cellphone network by walking around cities, wading through swamps, standing in manholes, entering cornfields, hiking mountains, and traveling the rest of the country speaking into a cellphone asking “Can you hear me now?” He then pauses for a second and coolly responds, “Good,” as though another tester on the other end of the seemingly endless phone call always responds to his question with “Loud and clear,” “You betcha!,” or simply, “Yes, I can hear you.” This commercial speaks to all of us because we can remember the countless times we’ve held our phones to the sky begging to get a signal or we've been in the middle of a phone conversation only to have the call drop. Verizon Wireless was promising perfect communication and reception of that communication, which would make all our lives easier, especially in the life of the church.

Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, will be April 13 this year. Palm branches will be available at every service that morning, and the Children’s Choir will sing in the Sanctuary services. Palm/Passion Sunday is important because it begins Holy Week, perhaps the most important week in any Christian’s life. On Thursday night, April 17, Maundy Thursday will be observed in Sanctuary worship at 7 pm. Holy Communion will be celebrated in this special service of remembering Jesus is our Teacher. Then the following night, also at 7 pm in the Sanctuary, Good Friday will be observed through a powerful and moving celebration of Tenebrae (or darkness). This service will commemorate Jesus’ crucifixion and death and will end in almost total darkness as the Altar is stripped of all furnishings. (A casual Good Friday hub service will be held in the FLC Gym at 7 pm.)

I thank you for participating in this survey and for reading these articles. The pastors and staff spend hundreds of hours ordering the life of our church and keeping everyone informed. We do it all for one purpose: that you can feel God’s call on your life and know the opportunities within the life of the church that will help you grow. Please respond.

This year, why not make the entire journey from triumphal entry to a last supper together to acknowledging His suffering and death. Attend all of these services and let God’s Holy Spirit bear witness to your spirit how it is you have been saved, and what that salvation means in your life, so you might truly encounter the Risen Christ on Easter morning.

Unfortunately, the reality is that communicating information to our entire church is not such an easy task. The ultimate goal of the Communications Ministry is to provide a stream of information to visitors and members alike such that the work of the church, which is inspired by the Holy Spirit, can inspire the congregation to action. To put it in terms of Verizon Wireless, we want to provide an effective signal so that you can receive the messages loud and clear. And with that responsibility comes plenty of testing of, experimenting with, and evaluating the ways we communicate. Right now, we are seeking to learn the “readership” of The Connection, and more specifically, what is working and what isn’t within this monthly newsletter. If you are still reading this article, please text or email “Loud and clear” to (424) 294-8263 or preston@cumcsl.org. The number of responses we receive will give us an idea as to our readership. You’ll also note other areas of this edition of The Connection with similar cues. Please complete those as well so that we know other areas of The Connection are being read as well.

Maundy Thursday worship highlights the fellowship that took place in an upper room where the shadows of betrayal, denial, desertion, and death had already begun to gather. Christ will be present with us as Host, Master, Lord, Lamb of God, and the One who became a Suffering Servant on our behalf. In His presence, we will be made ready to serve, to share, and to love as He commanded us. For He will be there to humble our hearts and to strengthen and shape them for the ministry of serving in His name. Good Friday is where we must go in order to experience the deep joy that is Easter. The reconciliation of our relationship with God and the restoration of our eternal hope is what make this day “good.” Good Friday calls us to profound wonder and gratitude as we rejoice, for in the death of Jesus Christ, God willed for His children to be redeemed, reconciled, restored, and renewed. In His presence, we will confront our need for a Savior and our hand in His suffering. When we go with Him through His suffering, He will forgive us so that His divine glory might shine even brighter in our lives on Easter morning.

churchmatters APARTMENT MINISTRY by drew essen With so many upcoming changes in my life and in the church, I wanted to give you an update on the Apartment Ministry. For those of you who don’t know, I have accepted a position at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church as the Director of Worship and Community Life for the Journey contemporary worship service. This change is bittersweet because it means I am leaving my wonderful home church, but I will also taking my next faithful step in ministry. I want to say thank you for all of the years of support and love that you have given me!

We are so blessed to

have a church family that takes risks for the Gospel of Christ!

So, the question on everyone’s mind is, what happens to the Apartment Ministry? Well, in short, the only thing that will change is the fact that I will not be receiving any compensation for working with the ministry. Kyle and I will continue to live in and reach out to those within the apartment complex in hopes of showing people Christ’s love. When our lease is up in September, Kyle and I will move out and the church will decide what course of action they will want to take to continue to reach out in Christ Church’s community. We are committed to keep seeking the stranger the way that Christ would and we believe in this ministry, even with the changes going on. If you have any questions about the goings-on in the Apartment Ministry, please don’t hesitate to contact Preston, Dan, Kyle or myself. During the month of March, our Apartment Ministry community has been joining our church in its focus, “Son of God: Who is He?” For our community Bible study, we have been engaged in the 4-week study that accompanies “Son of God,” the movie now showing in local theaters and on which our current sermon series is based. By the time you read this article, our study group will have seen this movie together. Again, thank you for your continued prayers and support for this ministry. We are so blessed to have a church family that takes risks for the Gospel of Christ! I want to encourage you to continue to support the Apartment Ministry and honestly pray for God’s wisdom and guidance as we look forward to its future.

If your child has an interest in participating, it is not too late to join! Children’s Choirs meet on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 6:30 pm and/or on Sunday mornings during the 8:15 and 11:05 am services. "Jesus is our Teacher" will be the theme of this year's Maundy Thursday service at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. What He taught us was to be a servant to all people. WE ALL KNOW SOMEONE... STEPHEN MINISTRY COULD HELP

Someone in crisis who doesn't know where to turn. Someone who is tense, upset, worn out--needing someone to talk with, someone to care. You'd like to help. But how? There are 3 easy steps: 1. Keep listening and caring for your friend in your own relationship together. 2. Let your friend know about Christ Church's Stephen Ministry program. Tell them it has someone who may be able to help, to walk through the crisis with them. You can discuss what it is: basically a one-to-one, confidential Christian caregiving program with trained Stephen Ministers.

,

Sally will confidentially talk with them, determine appropriateness of the situation for Stephen Ministry, and make the assignment as needed. Then your friend will be contacted directly by the Stephen Minister to begin their caring. Your friend does not have to be a member of Christ Church. If your friend is out of town, Stephen Ministry can also help locate a contact for a Stephen Ministry program near them by use of their zip code. Always remember, God is large and in charge, and we [Stephen Ministers] are small and on call!

3. At the same time, hand them a Stephen Ministry card that is always in each pew pocket in the Sanctuary...or a Stephen Ministry brochure from the racks found all around the church. Each has contact information for the referrals coordinator, Sally McKnight, at 713.306.1719.

Beth Moore says, “God spoke to my heart and said something like this: 'I sent my Son to set the captives free. You will go forth and ring the liberty bell.'" She said she was confused by the words God spoke to her heart because she had argued many times that TRUE believers could not LIVE in bondage. What she learned was that she had been held in captivity – she was a “prisoner unaware” until God began to set her free. We will use Galatians 5:1 as our reference point: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Register online by visiting the Christ Church "Women of Christ" page. In honor of the anniversary of their founding on February 14, 2003, Fort Bend Family Promise would like to announce that their website is now new and improved! "Our new website has a ton of information about our organization," says Robbin Mallett, Fort Bend Family Promise Board member and leader of the website redesign project. "We hope it will help us get the word out about all we've accomplished in 2013 as well as recognize our hundreds of volunteers and promote ways new supporters can get involved. For example, have you heard about Club 214? If not, check out the website and find out." In 2013, FBFP served 128 individuals including 80 children from all over Fort Bend County. 90% of the families served exited the program and have attained permanent housing, but on average 19 qualified families per month are left waiting to enter the program. Our church supports this organization, but more is needed. Can you help? Check out the website at www.fortbendfamilypromise.org and like their Facebook page. INTERESTED IN AUDIO-VISUAL?
