GET TO K NOW PASTOR TEMPLE

‘the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.’” –Galatians 5:6

What is your favorite Bible verse, and why does this verse speak to you? “Favorite Bible verse is a tough one. The call of Moses in Exodus 4 has always had a great personal relevance to me, as I can identify with most of the excuses Moses tried to give the Lord. In the end, however, God had an answer for every one of them, just as He did for my excuses, too. I, also, love 1 Samuel 2:30 where God promises that those who honor Him, He will honor as well. That verse has a particular association as well with one of my favorite movies, Chariots of Fire, where an American runner quotes it to Eric Liddell, who has refused to run on the Sabbath. Then there’s Joshua 14:12 where at the age of 85, Joshua asks not for a nice little retirement community to settle down into, but for the mountain where the Anakites still live. I do read the New Testament, as well, however, and I have the same problem there settling on a verse, but if I had to pick one it might be Galatians 5:6, a Scripture I will perhaps preach on my first Sunday at Christ Church: ‘the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.’”

Star Wars ? Or Star Trek ? “Star Wars, definitely. My personal belief is that almost anything that needs understanding can probably be related to Star Wars in some way. That may be because George Lucas tapped into a very deep reservoir of spirituality, myth, and human experience when he crafted his story. Or it may be just because John Williams wrote a killer score for the soundtrack.”

If you could travel to someplace you’ve never been to before (or for a return visit), where would that be, and why? “I’ve been blessed to travel and work pretty widely, some thirty or more countries in all. One of my favorite spots on earth, however, is Dunn’s Falls in Jamaica, which I first climbed when I was about 15. I’ve made it a point to try and climb them every decade of my life since, though I’m overdue to go back right now…I also love the Sea of Galilee, and, in the words of my daughter, ‘I can totally see why Jesus hung out there.’ The place I haven’t been that I would love to go is Antarctica. I already have the orange parka just waiting for the expedition.”

What are the last five books that you’ve read? “I’m reading right now Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath, as well as a book I picked up in Israel, Herod: The Man Who Had to Be King, by Yehuda Shulewitz. I like most of Tim Keller’s stuff, and just read through King’s Cross, his study on Mark which is outstanding. Sandra Richter’s The Epic of Eden is an incredibly great read and one which I just worked back through and can’t recommend highly enough. I also try to read into my area of teaching and church polity, so I just went through George Hunter’s Should We Change our Game Plan? I usually have one or two books going at a time.”

CHILDREN’S GROW GROUPS The Children’s Ministries Team at Christ Church is committed to providing each child with a life-long love of Jesus Christ.

CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL With goals and objectives for each age and grade level, our interactive Sunday School environment is a great place for children to learn and GROW in their faith. Our desire is that every child 18 months old and older attends Sunday School on Sunday mornings at 9:45 am. Our helpful kiosk volunteers will assist you in getting your child to his/her classroom. Younger children are invited to our childcare center, where they will be cared for by our loving childcare staff and introduced to BIBLE TIME, a curriculum that is specifically designed for infants and toddlers. Promotion Sunday is August 24th! So that we can best plan for class sizes, please make sure to register your child for Sunday School this year, even if your information has not changed. www.cumcsl.org/children Questions? Contact Evelyn Smith at evelynasmith@hotmail.com or 713.851.7061 or Debbie Straw at debbie.hardy.straw@gmail.com or 281.980.2607.

Come explore the doctrine of salvation (original sin, justification, redemption, and propitiation) in this 14-lesson Precept Upon Precept Bible study of Romans 1–5. This is an in-depth study which requires approximately 45 minutes of homework per day (5 days/week). Register online at www.cumcsl.org/women. The $30 registration fee includes your workbook. MAKING SENSE OF THE BIBLE

Thursdays 9:30–11:30 am • Volunteer Center September 18–November 7 Facilitated by Debe Fannin In Making Sense of the Bible, Adam Hamilton invites us into an honest conversation about the Bible. The book begins with foundational questions such as, how and when was the Bible written? Who decided which books made it into the Scriptures and why? How literally must we read it? And, is the Bible ever wrong? Register online at www.cumcsl.org/women. The $20 registration fee includes your workbook. Questions? Contact Debe Fannin at dfannin78@gmail.com or 281.265.4082.

HERE & NOW…THERE & THEN Sundays • 6–8 pm September 7–November 16 Facilitated by Cindy Kirkendall

Beth Moore says “Interpretations of the book of Revelation stretch to every extreme on the theological map and fall everywhere in between. As long as God is glorified and His word held sacred and inspired, having our views challenged can be a very healthy thing. You might be relieved to, also, have a number of your theological stands affirmed. An ardent desire to know God through the study of Scripture mixed with a humble spirit concocts the best kind of student.” Register online at www.cumcsl.org/women. The $20 registration fee includes your workbook. Questions? Contact Cindy Kirkendall at cindy@kirkendalls.net or 281.277.4756.

GROW WEEKEND RETREAT EXPERIENCES 2014 WALK TO EMMAUS RETREATS Men’s Walk #81 • October 9 Women’s Walk #82 • October 16

Walk to Emmaus is a 72-hour Christian spiritual retreat designed to build leadership in the local church as well as provide spiritual renewal to both those attending a retreat and the volunteers who serve on a retreat. The Bridgebuilder Process with Dr. Peter Steinke Some months ago, at the recommendation of Conference leaders, Christ Church began a working relationship with Church Conflict Resolution Consultant, Dr. Peter Steinke, a nationally recognized expert in the field. On June 22, Christ Church held an open “learning event” with Dr. Steinke in the Sanctuary. At that meeting and in the following weeks, several opportunities for feedback from church members were made available. This feedback included verbal comments in the “Tell It to Peter” portion of the meeting; written Personal Response forms submitted during and after the event; and letters, phone calls and emails received by him prior to July 20. On July 27, Dr. Steinke met with the congregation to share his compiled Action Report based upon the feedback he received and his expertise as a consultant. Printed copies of the report were distributed to all present, and additional copies are now available in the church office. After the meeting, Dr. Steinke met with 16 church members who were selected to be a part of an Action Planning Team. This team worked with Dr. Steinke to begin the process of drafting an Action Plan Report. This Action Plan is a work in progress, which will eventually define how Christ Church will address the issues identified in Dr. Steinke’s Action Report. During the month of August, the Action Planning Team will be meeting with church members in focus groups to receive constructive feedback about the major issues presented in Dr. Steinke’s report and the drafted Action Plan. Numerous focus group meeting times will be offered. Those wishing to participate in a focus group may sign up by visiting www.cumcsl.org/focus or by contacting Debbie Meier or Sandy White at 281.980.6888. Once all focus group meetings have concluded, the Action Planning Team and Dr. Steinke will present the final version of the Action Plan to the Leadership Council on September 7. The Leadership Council will then choose how to receive and respond to the Action Plan Report. The intent of the Action Plan is to promote a healthier and more vibrant church to drive ministry at Christ Church into the coming years!

churchmatters VBS 2014 was fantastic with more than 500 kids, youth, and adults participating! We want to thank all who made this event successful by bringing your kids, giving your time, and donating food, chickens, flippers, boxes, socks, and assorted craft supplies. We were able to minister to hundreds of kids both from our church and from the community. We could absolutely tell that God was at work in Weird Animals VBS, and we can’t wait for next year! Kate Flint | Children’s Ministry

Church matters when your spouse has been unemployed for 9 months, and so many people here at church have prayed for him and have asked about him, even though some have never met him. Through their prayers and those of so many others, he will be working again beginning the first of July. Prayers played an important role in this outcome, and God heard every one of them. I give Him all the glory. Thank you so much, Church, for caring about me and my family. Benita Sebesta | Prayer, Care, and Support

Because of the visit by the inmate choir, Winds of Change, on Christ Church’s RJM Sunday, the new warden got to see what RJM means to our church and to the inmates. He was so moved by the Spirit working throughout that day that he has worked very hard to gain permission to take the choir to churches every Sunday. The warden, himself, will talk from the pulpit at each church about the effects of RJM on a church. Our church’s welcoming of these men has opened the way for other churches to meet our special friends in white. Betty Waedemon | Restorative Justice Ministry

AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER HEALING PRAYER WORSHIP SERVICE AT REGULAR TIMES TUESDAY, AUGUST 12 • 7 PM • SANCTUARY TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 • 7 PM • SANCTUARY

November 2 is “All Saints Sunday,” and we will celebrate a Memorial Paver Dedication service after morning worship at 12:30 pm in the courtyard in front of the Sanctuary. This service will be in addition to our All Saints‘ remembrances which will be part of every worship service that morning. You may purchase an engraved paver ($100) to be placed in the walk area in memory of or in honor of a loved one.

Painful memories can hinder healing. But Christ’s presence spans all time - empowering, loving, and healing - yesterday, today, and forever. Hold on to the memory that you’re never alone. Meet the One who always goes with you at our regular monthly Healing Prayer Worship Services, held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7 pm in the Sanctuary.

Forms may be filled out online or picked up in the church office or Volunteer Center on Sundays, August 24 through September 14. All orders will be due by September 14 in order to allow sufficient time for the engraving. Please include your check with your order. Proceeds will benefit the church’s Endowment Fund.

Our August service will be on the 12th and our September service on the 9th. Sacred Harps and Chimes will return to offer meditative music, and Holy Communion is always celebrated. These services are open to the public.

MENTORING MATTERS... AUGUST 20 OR SEPTEMBER 17 • 9:30 AM • FBISD ADMIN BLDG

THEY ARE AMONG US STEPHEN MINISTRY

No, we’re not talking about angels or aliens! We’re talking about Stephen Ministers, who are individuals among us here at Christ Church who care about others. The Scriptures describe their service well: “Remember ... those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering,” (Hebrews 13.3), and “...speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ” (Ephesians 4:15). If you or someone you know wants to do more as a Christian caregiver, consider Stephen Ministry. This is our congregation’s confidential one-toone caregiving ministry. Contact Sally McKnight at 713.306.1719 at any time for more information, or visit the ministry table in the month of October. Registration for training will take place in October or earlier and a class will start in January, if enough are interested.

Christ Church and Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity are once again partnering to help out our neighbors right here in Fort Bend County. We need to be fully funded before construction can start, so this year we will be fundraising to prepare for the build of our 14th home with construction to begin in the fall of 2015. We currently have approximately half of the required funds for this construction effort. Donations can be made with checks payable to CUMC with “Habitat” in the memo line. As apostles, we strive to provide service to our community and beyond. We are always looking for ambassadors! Check with your employer to see if they provide matching gift funds. If they do, you may need to donate to Habitat directly. Just make sure you and your employer indicate that your donation is for the Christ Church house. If you or your employer can provide “in kind” donations, please contact John MacDonald at jmacdonald3@ comcast.net for discussions of what construction materials are needed. You do not need to have construction expertise to help out with our Habitat for Humanity mission. We need you!

For a small fundraising fee of $5 per carton, ProShred Security will take your somewhat sensitive but no longer needed paperwork and shred, shred, SHRED! But wait, not just your paper! We invite you to bring your unwanted CD’s/DVDs, hard drives, etc. as well. This is a great chance to clean up the offices, garages, etc. All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity.

ReStore is a home improvement thrift store consisting of slightly used, to new, unneeded items. Especially needed are doors, windows, cabinets (kitchen or other) plumbing/electrical fixtures/supplies, floor tiles, blinds/ shades and working appliances (10 years or less). Almost any building or remodeling material that’s in good shape can be recycled through the ReStore, saving you dumping costs and providing a tax deduction as well. All operating profits from ReStore sales go into Habitat’s building program, helping provide adequate housing for Fort Bend County families. Deliveries directly to the ReStore at 13570 Murphy Rd. are also always welcome. The ReStore does provide pick up service for larger items when scheduled in advance by calling 281.403.0700. We hope you will continue to support our Habitat for Humanity mission here at Christ Church with all your gifts. Your Christ Church Habitat for Humanity Mission Committee “Building Homes, Communities and Hope” SUMMER HUNGER FOOD DRIVE THANK YOU

Thank you for donating so generously. Over 225 sacks of food were delivered to East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry. Because of your generosity, families with children will be provided with extra food for breakfasts and lunches this summer. CARING CASSEROLES

SHARE YOUR JOYS AND CONCERNS WITH US Your pastoral staff and leaders of Christ Church’s Member Care Ministries want to share in your joys and concerns. You might not know this, but hospitals do not contact churches – even when you give them your church name, address, and contact information. Part of this is due to HIPPA laws. So whether you’re about to enter the hospital or you’re celebrating the birth of a baby, please call Sandy White in the church office at 281.980.6888. She will forward your message to the pastors and appropriate member care ministry leaders.
