JANUARY.2014
Fres h St art
When we think of the excitement of a new year we often think of fresh starts. We reflect on the encouragement of others to inspire us to transformative change:
On January 5th, we will look at the story of the wise men traveling to find the newborn king and consider this: “To better follow Christ, I need to leave behind .” (hurt, pain, guilt)
Reverend Henry Ward Beecher said, “Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page.”
On January 12th, we will recall when Jesus was found in the temple with the teachers and reflect upon and complete this statement: “What I love about coming to my ‘House of Worship’ is .” (families who care, listening, growing in faith)
Saint Francis of Assisi said, “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible. —St. Francis of Assisi “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Saint Paul; 2 Corinthians 5:17 In reflecting on the New Year and our need for wholeness in relationships, I believe that, as a church family, we can collectively experience a fresh start through the study of God’s Word.
On January 19 th, we will recount Jesus’ baptism, remember our own, and invite others to share in the experience with us as we contemplate this: “My baptism calls me to .” (a fresh start, the Good News, and commissioning as a servant of Christ) Finally, on January 26 th, we will ponder Jesus’ telling us to not put new wine in old wineskins and finish this sentence: “Some ‘fresh starts’ I need to make to be more accepting of the new ways of thinking that Christ brings are .” (spiritual discipline, worship, flexibility) I have included answers to these fill-in-the-blank statements to prime your pump in thinking of all the other wonderful biblical applications that can come about, and to let you prayerfully consider and pray for how your pastors are going to unpack each one of those four points.
Join us this January as we begin the New Year with a “Fresh Start.” Sincerely,
MIKE MAYHUGH SENIOR PASTOR

UMW | PAM BLUESTEIN The ladies of UMW provided dinner for a group of teen moms who meet monthly with mentors to learn parenting skills and acquire items for their babies by earning points, which means staying in school, working, attending meetings, etc. When the young ladies saw the meal prepared for them, they were thrilled and moved. We received word that they thought we really went over and beyond to make them feel special. Many girls got to take food home for themselves and their children. It was a privilege to share our blessings and the love of Christ with them.

JANUARY HEALING PRAYER WORSHIP SERVICE TUESDAY, JANUARY 14 • 7 PM • SANCTUARY
The Apartment Ministry is now in full swing and we are taking steps every day to connect with residents at The Foundations apartment complex. On November 16th, we hosted a cookout in our parking lot to meet our neighbors and to tell them more about our church and the intentional community we hope to create within the complex. We had an overwhelming response from the people we met and we learned a lot about the kinds of people that live in our building and complex. During that day, we made 14 new contacts with folks in the complex. That is a number we are celebrating! On Wednesday, December 4th, we began our weekly Bible study at the apartment. In the month of December, we studied the Christmas story and in January, we’ll dive into a new curriculum that looks at the life and work of Jesus. Please continue to pray that we can reach people who are far from the Lord. While this holiday season can bring about joy and love, for many people this time of year is full of hurt and loneliness. We are praying for the lost and lonely to be open to Christ’s love this holiday season. If you are interested in being a part of this outreach effort of our church, please feel free to contact me at drew@cumcsl.org. We would love for you to be on our team! In His Service, Drew Essen
God resolved to love us and make us whole in Jesus Christ. He is the Healer who’s ready to meet us in our hopelessness and pain. He’s the One in whom we’ll experience a better year this year. Come meet Him at the January Healing Prayer Service, where prayers and Scriptures will center on the renewal made possible by God’s love. Holy Communion will be celebrated. MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2014 • 1–3 PM • GATHERING HALL & SANCTUARY
Many hands really do make light work. Please come lend a hand and help us put away our Advent and Christmas decorations. Inventory lists and storage tubs will be provided. This is easy work that should only take an hour or so to complete; come for the time you can. Bring your leftover Christmas treats and enjoy great fellowship. Direct your questions to this year’s Coordinator, Sandy White, at sandyw@cumcsl.org or 281.690.4777. THANK YOU, ALTAR GUILD
Thanks hardly seem enough for this small, but dedicated, group who meet every first Saturday to prepare the Communion elements for the next day’s worship services in the Sanctuary. They enjoy serving alongside each other as they complete the worshipful work of preparing the elements. They end their service with a special time of prayer before breaking bread together over brunch. Every member of the team says it helps them feel more connected to what happens in worship and therefore enables them to draw closer to God during worship. All say they end up feeling more blessed than they expected. In recent days the Altar Guild has had to say a sad goodbye to a few of its members, so there is room for you. Why not consider this once-a-month morning of service and find yourself blessed? Contact Ministry Coordinator Sally McKnight at 713.306.1719 for more information. ACOLYTES, THANK YOU!
The guys competed in a community event at the apartment complex for the “Best Decorated Balcony.”

Our Christ Church Acolytes (and their leaders, Victor and Judy Hicks, and Sharon Hazel) are truly awesome! Thank you - all of you for assembling the Christmas Eve candles, serving in our Christmas Eve-Eve and Christmas Eve services, and committing to leadership in worship throughout the year. May God bless each of you with a wonderful year as you continue to serve, bearing the light of Christ to remind us whose we are.
CONNECT COMMUNION PREPARERS AND SERVERS NEEDED EVERY 1ST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH • 9:45 & 11:05 AM SERVICES
The Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month in all the Sanctuary’s Traditional worship services, and additionally every Sunday in the 8:15 Contemporary and the 11 am hub services. Servers are always needed. But there’s also a need for persons to make sure the elements are in place before each worship service, and a small group is needed to clean up following the last Sanctuary service. While Servers are generally easy to find, Preparers are much harder to find. If you would be willing to help in either of these roles in the Sanctuary or in the hub, please contact Sandy White at sandyw@ cumcsl.org or 281.690.4777. Thank you!
MEET US ON FACEBOOK! MEN’S LUNCH THURSDAY, JANUARY 9 • 11:30 AM • SPRING CREEK BBQ
Men of all ages, join together for lunch and fellowship at Spring Creek BBQ. This is a wonderful cross-generational event as well as a great way to find out what is going on in our community and beyond. “GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE”

PUT IT IN WRITING THURSDAY, JANUARY 23 • 10 AM • CHURCH LIBRARY
Our lives are full of stories. One way to secure those memories for ourselves and future generations is to “put it in writing.” Jan Randolph leads this monthly writers’ workshop designed to inspire, encourage and support participants in the writing process. Our explorations will include (but not necessarily be limited to) memoirs, journal writing, prayer journals, faith stories, family narratives, and poetry. Just bring paper and pencil and your mind full of stories. ROOTS RESEARCH THURSDAY, JANUARY 16 • 11 AM • ROOMS 11/12
Are you interested in your ancestors? Virginia and Glenn Morrison leads this group in exploring your family genealogy. It is exciting to see how God has been working through generation after generation. To help you in your explorations it is necessary for you to bring information about the earliest ancestor you have knowledge about (name, place of birth or residence or death, dates/approximate dates). Bring a sack lunch, mobile technology (if available), and join us. For a full listing of activities and ways you can get involved at Christ Church, please visit WWW.CUMCSL.ORG

Education is like a passport to a better quality of life. A GED serves as that passport for many. But due to state budget cuts, GED classes were eliminated for the inmates at the Vance unit in Richmond. Hopes for a better life through education evaporated. However, through faithful, loving volunteers, we hope to RESTORE their hope, as part of Christ Church’s Restorative Justice Ministry. There is a critical need for Math and English/Reading tutors. You do not need to have any training as a teacher to help. The needs go from basic reading and phonics to college level classes. Anyone interested in volunteering or getting more details, contact Ron Zifer at 281.340.8733 or Ron_Zifer@pfm.org. Ron can arrange for you to visit the program first to see if it is where you are being called to serve.
If making a difference in the life of one child is where God is leading you, please mark your calendar to attend one of these 1-hour mentor training sessions at 9:30 am in the Boardroom of the FBISD Administrative Bldg on Lexington Blvd. and Austin Pkwy. Training dates are: January 15th, February 5th or March 5th. Christ Church adopted Holley Elementary in 2008, and their primary request for help was for the children to develop positive relationships with adult role models through the mentoring program. God has blessed you with so many gifts - please consider sharing them with a child in need. Questions? Contact Kate Flint at 281.627.2082. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY MONDAYS & FRIDAYS • 9 AM • VOLUNTEER CENTER
