grade will be promoted to their new classes for the 2011-2012 Sunday School year. Christ Church has a

God-inspired dream that every person in worship be connected to a Sunday School class, Home Group

or Bible Study so that we can all further our faith and grow in knowledge and understanding of God.

In Children’s Ministry, that would mean each child would be in Sunday School on Sunday mornings. Our Children’s Ministry leadership team has developed

great curriculum with specific goals and objectives for

each age and grade level which build a foundation for a life of faith. We pray that your family will make

regular attendance a part of your weekly commitment. If you would like to be a part of this exciting ministry by serving in a classroom, please contact Ingred Lathrop at children@cumcsl.org or call 281.690.4748. All children who have attended Sunday School here in the past will automatically be promoted to a new class on August 21. If your child has not yet attended Sunday School at Christ Church, please let us know so we can assign him or her to the appropriate class. We are looking forward to another great year of sharing the gift of God’s love with His children.

“Authentic” Christian Proclamation BY MORRIS MATTHIS

My article in the last edition of the newsletter posed some questions I have continued to ponder. Perhaps some of you have been doing so as well. It got people’s attention because it made reference to an article being passed around among some of my preacher friends that was critical of Joel Osteen. I was less interested in criticizing another pastor than in thinking about the issues the article raised. For me, the underlying issue was this: what truly constitutes an “authentic” Christian proclamation? As I concluded my article, I expressed the struggle I experience between knowing the call of Jesus to the rich young ruler to sell all he had to give it to the poor before following Him and being grateful for all I have in my life, enjoying the lifestyle these material blessings make possible. As a pastor seeking to preach

authentically, how shall I preach? And as a follower of Jesus called to live authentically, how shall I live? As a minister of the gospel, it occurs to me that authentic proclamation of the gospel must include the following: the message of salvation by grace and not by works; the call to do those things that will deepen one’s relationship with and knowledge of God; the teaching that following Christ is synonymous with personal sacrifice for the sake of God’s kingdom; and the understanding that following Christ must include a passion for the poor, the powerless, the alienated, the sick and the downtrodden. Not every sermon, study, article, and post must include all four of these elements. But, anyone who dares to take on the mantle of shepherd of God’s people and does not include all of them in some measure

is doing a disservice to his or her flock. It would be like a shepherd who only offers the flock refreshing water without also offering fresh green grass or like a shepherd who always keeps the flock locked inside the fold never leading them to find new pastures on which to feed. Just as sheep need the water, the grass, the fold, and the fresh fields to be healthy sheep, Christians need to hear all four truths to live fully as followers of Jesus. This approach to ministry can be dangerous. Some people only want the refreshing water! They may not even know they need anything else. Some people may only want to stay safely in the fold. They don’t realize they even need to venture out into new fields. But the loving shepherd must always have the courage to offer the complete “authentic” proclamation for the sake of the flock.

See you Sunday,

Morris Matthis, Senior Pastor

living Jesus is this: eally made Jesus ord of our whole life.

How does this translate into how we live? The earliest Christian affirmation was short and simple. It was only three words in English: Jesus is Lord. When someone was your lord, you depended on that person for everything. When someone was your lord, your whole life was dedicated to serving that person. When someone was your lord, that person was your everything. The blessing and the challenge of living authentically as a follower of Jesus is this: to ask whether we have really made Jesus Lord of our whole life. Is Jesus the Lord of our hearts, which means He has free reign to go wherever he wants? Is Jesus the Lord of our days, which means that every day is dedicated to serving Him no matter what the day holds? Jesus can be our Lord at our place of business as easily as He can be our Lord when we are at work. Is Jesus the Lord of our lifestyle? Is He the Lord of the decisions we make about our money, about how we use our talents, how we use our homes? Is He the Lord of our music choices, our style of dress, our entertainment choices? Living authentically as a follower of Jesus means wrestling with what an authentic proclamation means for each of us in how we live and who we are. Just as an authentic proclamation can require courage, so does authentic Christian living. It requires the courage to ask what such a life really looks like and then the courage to see where I am in relation to it. And yet, there are such blessings that go with that life. Perhaps next time we can explore those blessings.

BY JASON NELSON

Christianity is about proclamation and practice. It is about proclaiming our simple and primary claim, “Jesus is Lord” and then living in light of our claim. As Christians, we seem to have a far easier time with the proclamation part. Saying Jesus is Lord, for the most part, isn’t difficult (although historically and presently it can lead to death). Now, living in a way that reflects the truth that Jesus is Lord…that’s where we often get hung up. Living in the power of the Spirit is the only way we can live out our proclamation. So if we want to be authentic in the faith then we must rely on the Holy Spirit to empower us to proclaim the Truth that Jesus is Lord and then live under his Lordship—submitting to his will and ways. This is what the early Christians did. They not only proclaimed Christ as Lord, they knew he is Lord and lived in that truth. How? They were filled with the Holy Spirit. Today we often underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit. Let’s consider the early Christians and how they viewed the Holy Spirit? Did they underestimate the power of the Spirit? Hardly! On the contrary, as recorded in the book of Acts, they believed in the Spirit’s power and performed the same sorts of miracles Christ did while He was physically on earth. How?

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Luke 4:18-19 (NRSV)

They lived in the Spirit which was upon Christ. And with this Spirit within, they preached the gospel with boldness in the face of persecution. They brought release to those captive to sin and bound in addiction. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, they caused the lame to walk. They gave the blind back their sight. In the Spirit, Peter even raised the dead (Acts 9). The early Christians didn’t have the corner on the market. They didn’t have any special power that we don’t have access to today. Because of Christ, the Holy Spirit is given to every believer; and this Spirit is impacting our world and our lives in great ways. The Spirit is always convicting us of any and all sin in us. The Spirit is continually forming us into the image of Christ. The Spirit is empowering us to resist temptation, breakthrough obstacles, and overcome adversity. And, the Holy Spirit is giving us the gifts to help those around us who are hurting. So, believe in the power of the Spirit. Believe that the Holy Spirit uses people to do the things that Jesus did. Look forward, then, to seeing results—the captives will be set free, the blind will see, and the oppressed will experience a breakthrough in their lives unlike anything they’ve ever known.

UNITED METHODIST MOMENT Albert Outler coined the phrase “Wesleyan Quadrilateral” to describe the four-fold way John Wesley approached theology and doctrine. “Wesley believed that the living core of the Christian faith was revealed in Scripture, illumined by tradition, vivified in personal experience, and confirmed by reason. Scripture is primary, revealing the Word of God ‘so far as it is necessary for our salvation.’ Therefore, our theological task, in both its critical and constructive aspects, focuses on disciplined study of the Bible.” (See The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church—2008, p.77.) United Methodists continue to use Scripture, tradition, experience and reason as we seek to know God and know about God. We will be publishing periodic articles on our United Methodist heritage and beliefs. If you have a topic you would like addressed, please send your requests to Karen LaMotta at KarenL@cumcsl.org.

allow experts to tell them what scripture says. While we can appreciate the experts’ knowledge and experience, God wants each of us to encounter Him in His Word. So, how does the average person study a book written in a different time, in different languages, in a different place, to a very culturally different group of people? How do we bridge those gaps? Believe it or not, there are some simple steps to guide you, and you may already be using many of them when you read without even realizing it. First, always begin your study time with prayer. Just as the Spirit inspired the writers, the Spirit stands ready to guide us in our study both revealing God’s truth and empowering us to live authentic Christian lives in light of that truth. Second, try to understand the passage’s original context. When reading an email, people typically look to see who it’s from, who else is copied on the email, and what may have been said in earlier emails in the chain. You can bring those same questions to a Bible passage. Who is the author? Who is the author addressing? What is the author’s purpose? What is the historical context? What does the author write about before the passage you’re studying, and what does the author write about after it. If you’re not sure of the context, many Bibles today have an introductory article before each book, or you may wish to look in a Bible commentary. You can also find many of the answers in the text itself. You don’t have to read very much of Galatians to learn about the writer and the church to which he was writing. Next, try to determine what the passage meant originally. Be sure to consider the literary style. Are you studying a parable, a historical narrative or a proverb? If you’ve taken the time to understand the context, it will be easier to understand what the author intended to convey to the original listeners; in fact, the context may be all you need. But, sometimes a passage may remain unclear or you may simply want to verify your understanding. When that happens, let Scripture interpret Scripture. What may be unclear or difficult to understand in one passage may be elaborated on in another passage. Don’t forget, God is consistent. If there are two ways to interpret a passage and one way is consistent with the rest of scripture while the other way is inconsistent, go with the interpretation that is consistent.

After you determine what the passage meant originally, you’re ready to ask what it means today, and more importantly, how you will respond to what it says. It is tempting to skip the other steps and jump straight to the application stage. But, a passage’s application often flows naturally from the time you spent wrestling with the text and trying to look at it objectively. Remember, there may be multiple correct applications of a passage, but they should be consistent with the original meaning. At this point, you may wish to turn to commentaries or study notes to answer any remaining questions or check your understanding. As you study, pay special attention to any verses which annoy, frustrate or provoke you. This may signal an area where you still have some work to do, with God’s help, of course! We know the world bombards us all day long in advertising, movies, books, music, television shows, and popular culture. Some of the messages it sends are good and consistent with the teachings of Christ, but many are not. Unless we are vigilant, it is easy to be conformed to the world’s beliefs and compromise the authenticity of our Christian witness. Now it shouldn’t surprise us when the world doesn’t have the mind of Christ; the world doesn’t know Him, but what about us? We must keep our minds fixed on Him. In order to be conformed to the gospel, we must know it. Personal study of the Bible is critical for that, but there is also tremendous value in studying the Word with others. At Christ Church we have a God-inspired dream that every person will not only faithfully attend worship, but will also be connected to a Sunday School class, Home Group or Bible study. Our next edition of The Connection will focus on the Grow portion of our strategy and will highlight some of the opportunities available at Christ Church. We hope that everyone here will be intentionally committed to greater involvement in the church as well as personal study of the scriptures. The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, and in Matthew 28:19, Jesus personally gives us our Great Commission by saying, “therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” We cannot possibly make disciples without being disciples, and we cannot faithfully live as disciples and impact the world without knowing and understanding God’s word. We pray that you will dig-in daily. Need help? Let us know; we are here to help each other.

Our Children’s Ministry team works hard to provide great opportunities for our children to grow into spiritual champions who Love God and know that God loves them. We need adult and youth volunteers who want to serve God by sharing His love with the children on Sunday mornings. Please contact Ingred Lathrop at 281.690.4748 or children@cumcsl.org if you are interested in learning more about this serving opportunity. MORE THAN A CUP OF COFFEE

Are you like many of us who enjoy a cookie or cup of coffee on Sunday mornings between services? Our Hospitality Team is grateful to serve our congregation by providing refreshments, but it is so much more than the cup of coffee. It is about welcoming one another just as Christ has welcomed us. It is about gathering people into the body of Christ, inviting them to the banquet of God’s gracious love. It is about helping a newcomer feel genuinely welcome to Christ Church, and doing something, however small, to show we care. Our Hospitality Team is currently too small to adequately serve the needs of this ministry, and we are inviting you to help. There is a minimal time commitment; no experience is necessary, and there are immeasurable benefits. Contact Karen LaMotta at karenl@cumcsl.org or 281.690.4767. PHONE VOLUNTEERS

Christ Church has a continuing opportunity for our members to serve in the church. It is a chance for you to be that first friendly voice people hear when they call our church. We are in need of friendly people who will volunteer to take a half day shift at our receptionist desk each week. We will train you on how to operate the switchboard, help you to know how to answer questions, and equip in every way to perform this important task.
