Pursuit of the King

LOVE One of my favorite poems, and one that has inspired the writing of many Christmas carols through the years, comes from Christina Rossetti: Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love Divine, Love was born at Christmas, Star and Angels gave the sign. Worship we the Godhead, Love Incarnate, Love Divine, Worship we our Jesus, But wherewith for sacred sign? Love shall be our token, Love shall be yours and love be mine, Love to God and all men, Love for plea and gift and sign… Love expresses itself in so many ways. I love my wife’s roast that is cooked in coffee. I love my friends, my church, and my family. I love God and the fact that God came down at Christmas. And because God loved me and gave me the greatest gift of all, God’s Son, I am inspired to pursue God in all that I do. Join us as we go on an Advent journey together in our upcoming sermon series, “Pursuit of the King.” We will be Pursuing Hope, Pursuing Peace, Pursuing Joy, Pursuing Love and, finally, Pursuing the King! Love Divine, all loves excelling!

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” Luke 1:76-79 In a beautiful prayer that later came to be known as the Benedictus, Zechariah praised God for the birth of his son, John, and for the coming of his Savior, Jesus Christ. The words of this new father’s prayer were the first he had spoken since the angel Gabriel left him mute after he questioned the promise of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Zechariah proclaimed that Christ would be light to those in darkness and life to those in death and that he would guide Israel’s feet along paths of peace. His own son, John, would prepare the people to receive this good news. Not many verses later (Luke 2:14) the multitude of the heavenly host would confirm Zechariah’s words as they announced Christ’s birth to the shepherds: “Glory in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” A few verses more and Simeon, a righteous and devout man, would be guided into the Temple by God’s Holy Spirit to witness the presentation of the infant, Jesus, by Mary and Joseph. Taking Jesus in his arms, he would pray: “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for the glory to your people Israel.” When Jesus began His public ministry He would often heal people and then dismiss them with the blessing, “Go in peace.” As He commissioned the seventy to go out two by two, He instructed them to announce peace and to look for those who would share in that peace. Otherwise they were to wipe the dust of that place off their feet. When the day came for Him to go to Jerusalem, His disciples praised God joyfully as they shouted, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” But as He came near the city, He wept over it, saying, “If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace !” After His resurrection and the encounter on the road to Emmaus He stood among those who had been talking about all that had happened and announced, “ Peace be with you.” Jesus would have been raised with the Hebrew understanding of peace, or shalom. Shalom meant wholeness, completion, perfection. Shalom was not merely the absence of conflict; it was really nothing short of complete cosmic harmony. Indeed harmony would be the essential characteristic of the Messianic age in which swords would be beaten into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks. It’s no wonder Jesus pronounced peace for it would be through His death that harmony would finally be restored. He would make peace by the blood of His cross (Colossians 1:19-20). Every year as we celebrate Christ’s birth we become more keenly aware of the absence of peace. The daily news, greetings from extended family and distant friends, and struggles at home remind us that God’s complete peace has not yet been fully established in the here and now. But every year we also seem to be just a little more willing to risk those things that make for peace, if only because we’ve been caught up in the spirit of the reason for the season. Christ is our peace; He is the Prince of Peace. At the very least, we can look forward to the inauguration of the Messianic age when this old world will at last reflect the perfect completeness that is heaven. But if you are willing to risk more this Christmas, then let your feet be guided along the paths that make for peace, pronounce peace in God’s house and in your own, bless one another with the peace of Christ, and work for the peace that lasts because it is in harmony with what God wants. Merry Christmas! May God’s peace be yours throughout this holy season! LINDA SUMMERS PIERCE

The cry of a newborn baby ringing out from a dirty backyard barn in Bethlehem. Rejoice - a Savior from heaven is among us!
HOPE At our worst, humans do terrible things. We lie, cheat, steal, injure, manipulate, humiliate, bully, neglect, abuse, murder, rape, and hate. At our worst, humans try to overshadow one another through power and intimidation, casting darkness on everything around us. Our own sin casts the world into darkness. It is in this darkness that we lose ourselves and whatever or whoever might be around us. We are forced to wander aimlessly, and we lose our way. Every person at Christ Church and in our neighborhood is acutely aware of one form of darkness or another. Unfortunately, this is part of the human condition. It’s not unusual to be lost and to wander. It’s not unusual to be overwhelmed by the darkness in our world and to feel helpless and hopeless. But in the most unlikely of places, a barn in a small town, a miracle happened. Born to a working-class tradesman and to a young mother who conceived outside of marriage, a small miracle was lying in an animal’s trough. In a dark world a baby was born beneath the light of a heavenly star. This baby would take the light of heaven to all the world and to every human in history. This baby was and is the Word of God and would defeat the darkness that eventually ensnares us all—death. God gave us a way through the darkness. God gave us a miracle. God gave us hope. Glory be to God! Amen. “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.” John 1:9

churchmatters The New Life Celebration class was only our second experience with Christ Church. That morning, I loaded up our kids and went to the class, expecting mostly to hear about the church’s Children’s ministries. What I found was so much more. This class marks the first time I have felt like I was home since high school. Rather than being a sales pitch for the ministries of the church, it was all about how we, as parents, could raise our children to be godly people. After that, I knew this was where God wanted our family to be. ~Patty Mills

Worship
God gave me an opportunity to see His love in Haiti. I went with a team of CUMC members who used their vacation time to willingly sweat and eat strange foods for 9 days in order to share God’s love. We fell in love with the people of a village called Olivier. The local workers looked out for our welfare and we smiled and laughed as we worked side by side. And we had over 240 kids for VBS! Thank you God for showing me what a loving community can be like and for giving me so much more than I can ever give back. ~Bob Sime
Because of your gifts to the Scholarship Fund, we were able to give three scholarships to our first FULL Fall Retreat. We had space for 32 and we took 27 Youth and 5 Adults. Thank You! Praising and thanking God for our Sacred Harps and Chimes Ensembles, especially for their presence in our monthly Healing Prayer Worship Services. What they have shared the past few months has been precisely what was needed to connect those in need of Christ the Healer with His very real presence.

Youth Ministry
When we were asked to help with “Girl Time”, we thought it would be a great opportunity to witness to 4th and 5th grade girls. What we didn’t expect was to receive a blessing ourselves, in the form of pure child-like faith. Some of these girls know each other from church and school, but many met for the first time this year. September started with our annual “Girl Time” pool party. We met again in October for pumpkin decorating, devotion and prayer. These girls represent the love and acceptance Christ exemplifies. It is truly a gift to be a “Girl”! ~Addie and Lauran

Youth Ministry Because of your faithful giving, we were able to take 32 Youth and Adults to the Dominican Republic this year and serve Christ!
I was mad at the world. I had no understanding on why God put me where I was. My parents had just gotten a divorce, and I felt like Christ had abandoned me. Then I went to 412 Youth Group, and I finally heard Him tell me that He was there and wasn’t going anywhere. Even though the earlier facts of my life are still true today, my situation has changed because now I know that God’s on my side, and I have Faith! ~Anonymous
Youth Ministry
My daughter Rachael has been attending 412 Youth Ministries for 2 years and has had a wonderful experience. She is so “connected” and strong in her faith since she has been a part of 412. She loves going to 412 and all of her friends that we bring there also love it. It has given her strength and healing that she so badly needed, and I’m sure God provided this opportunity for us, answering our prayers. I think the world of Lisa and Drew both! I think leading the youth is their “gift.” ~An honest look from a “mom”

Young Adult Ministry
If God has ever taught me anything, it is that He is faithful. Scripture tells us that “if we are faithful with little, God will make us faithful with much.” As I have grown in my faith, I have seen that this is a beautiful reflection of the faithfulness of our Father, who continues to give as we grow in spiritual maturity. In watching Axiom continue to take steps towards Jesus, I have seen God give more of a revelation of Himself and bless us with the ability to continue to effectively reach out to our generation. ~Jonathan Heironimus
I was alone and wanted to just die. I felt like I would never find anybody who could make it better, or would even care about me. Jesus led me to 412 Youth Ministries and introduced me to the biggest, most loving family I have ever had. I love all of you! ~Anonymous
churchmatters Finance Committee
Executive Leadership Council
The Finance Committee reviewed a 2014 preliminary budget at its monthly meeting on October 17. A final budget will be presented for approval at the February, 2014, Leadership Council meetingonce a final tally of the estimates of giving from this year’s stewardship campaign has been received. Historically, the church has approved a budget based on estimates of giving representing only about two-thirds of the next year’s planned expenses. We encourage everyone to assist us by completing an Estimate of Giving card so that our church will have a better understanding of next year’s expected giving in connection with preparing and approving the 2014 budget.
Our committee focused on the steps needed for the congregation to have more influence on the direction of the church.

Christ United Methodist Church is stepping into a groundbreaking concept of intentional Christian community by adopting The Foundations at Rivercrest apartment complex in Sugar Land. Intentional Christian community is a unique concept that will help us to answer the question, “How can we serve Christ with our whole lives?” This apartment complex will be our new home, and it is our hope and prayer that our neighbors will ultimately become part of our Christ United Methodist Church family. Kyle MacDonald and I have moved into an apartment at The Foundations and are beginning to reach out to our neighbors in hopes of creating a Christian community. The Foundations is our mission field, and we are looking at this complex through missional eyes. Every month, we will be bringing you stories and updates from this ministry through a column here in The Connection. We want you to be informed about the
Sunday, December 15 9:45 & 11:05 am Sanctuary services Christ United Methodist Church is offering our families and visitors a special music- and mission-oriented worship service! There will be NO Children’s Sunday School on this day. Instead, all are invited to attend our 9:45 and 11:05 am services which will center around the message of “giving” as presented by our Children’s choir in the musical, “The Christmas Shoe Tree.” IF you picked up an Angel Tree tag, you will be asked to bring this gift to the altar DURING the musical. If you didn’t pick up a tag, you will still have a chance to bring forward dollar bills to purchase shoes for our upcoming Soles for Souls campaign. Following the services, there will be family photo opportunities, hot chocolate, special treats and something special to pick up and “give” away in the coming week. You will be able to experience what it’s like to be a “giving” angel.

happenings and progress occurring within this new outreach ministry. On November 2nd, Kyle and I hosted an open house event inviting the entire church to come, see and learn about this community and ministry. Those present gathered together and shared in a time of worship and communion before completing a prayer walk through the apartment complex. As we took turns praying at the different locations within the complex, we witnessed a beautiful picture of the Kingdom of God working together for one common goal. As we share the Good News of Jesus Christ with those living in this “mission field,” we hope that God will allow us to see lives being changed.

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS ON SALE DECEMBER 1, 8 AND 15 • MINISTRY CENTER DECEMBER 1 - 15 • ONLINE OR THROUGH CHURCH OFFICE
One Christmas a poor girl wanted to honor Christ’s birth by laying a gift on the altar of her church. She picked a bouquet of things growing near her home because that was all she had to give. It turned out they were mostly weeds. As she walked to church she prayed her gift would be good enough. “Dear Jesus,” she prayed, “I’ve a gift to lay before your throne. It is my small and humble heart. Please use it for your own.” As she laid her bouquet on the altar the weeds turned into the brightest red flowers she had ever seen. Such is the legend behind the practice of placing poinsettias in worship at Christmastime. When we place Christmas poinsettias in worship in honor and memory of our loved ones, we honor Christ and offer our small and humble hearts in celebration of His birth and in hopes that He will find a use for us. Beautiful bright red poinsettias from Brookwood Nursery may be purchased for $10 each in the Ministry Center, online, or through the front office. Look for the red order forms in the Ministry Center and Sanctuary pew pockets. The poinsettias will be placed in worship on December 23 and will be available for you to take home after the Christmas Eve service you attend. Questions? Contact Sandy White at 281.980.6888 or sandyw@cumcsl.org.

So, circle December 1 on your calendars and meet us in Rooms 210/211 for two hours of nonstop fun focused on the coming of Jesus Christ. Contact Judy or Victor Hicks, our Acolyte Coordinators, at 281.980.8727 or 281.935.2754 to RSVP. Parental help and other volunteer help is always welcomed and very much appreciated! SILENT NIGHT: A TIME OF HOPE AND HEALING TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10 • 7 PM • SANCTUARY
Nothing is more painful than facing that first Christmas without your loved one. Instead of bringing excitement and happiness, Christmas only brings reminders of an empty place in your home and heart. This quiet, peaceful, beautiful, candle-lit service of Word and music offers a time for remembering God weeps with us in our sorrow and wants to restore our joy. Hope is offered through prayers, a special Advent Wreath liturgy and the Pastor’s meditation, and the joy of sound and song is gifted by the Festival Choir, Sacred Harps and bells. Candles will be lit during the singing of “Silent Night” which will include a verse written just for this night that celebrates and anticipates the new life we all have in Jesus Christ. All are invited to attend this service. Extended family members, friends, co-workers and acquaintances are most welcome.
On Sunday, December 15 at the 9:45 am and 11:05 am services, Christ Church will offer our members and visitors a special treat. This will be a special worship, musical and mission-oriented Sunday! There will be NO Children’s Sunday School on this day – instead we are asking you to attend one of these special services that will center around the message of “giving” as presented by our Children’s choir in a musical entitled “The Christmas Shoe Tree.” IF you picked up an Angel Tree tag you will be asked to bring this gift to the altar DURING the musical. Experience what it’s like to be a “giving” angel! THE FIRST NOEL. . . .AND YOU’RE THE SHEPHERD! CHRISTMAS EVE-EVE AND CHRISTMAS EVE WORSHIP ALL SERVICES, SANCTUARY AND HUB
This sweet carol says the first “noel” was sung to shepherds as they kept watch over their sheep. What if we, the congregation of Christ United Methodist Church, could see ourselves as “shepherds” of the whole community? Well, in fact, we are. So what are we shepherds to do? We can invite family and friends and neighbors to attend one of our Christmas Eve services. Then we can make sure there’s room for them by attending the Christmas Eve-Eve service ourselves on Monday, December 23, at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. If we return the next day to serve as greeters, ushers, Communion preparers and servers, we not only get to worship again, but we also get to show our appreciation to those who accepted our invitations. We welcome our largest number of guests on December 24. By attending our traditional candlelight worship service one day early, we leave room for our guests, and by returning to serve we demonstrate to those we’ve invited and to all who come that we are a church that believes in helping people find fullness in the Savior whose birth we celebrate. This year, why not be a shepherd so others may pursue the King of kings. To serve in any capacity, contact Sandy White at 281.690.4777 or sandyw@cumcsl.org. Thank you.

Advent means waiting and giving and preparing. Thanks to each of you who waited and stayed after worship on November 24 to give your time and energy to preparing our Sanctuary and gathering spaces for Advent and Christmas. From the Advent Wreath and Chrismon Tree to the Nativity and family tree, the way has been prepared for all who enter our church to remember that they have something wonderful to celebrate and a King to pursue who comes as God with us. Truly your hearts are already pursuing Him. Thank you for making straight paths so others may pursue Him, too. A very special thank you to Roland Huysman and the custodial team. THANK YOU, ALTAR GUILD
Thanks hardly seem enough for this small but dedicated group who meet every first Saturday to prepare the Communion elements for the next day’s worship services in the Sanctuary. They begin and end their service with prayer and then undertake the worshipful work of preparing the elements. In addition, another servant of God stays up most of the night Saturday night baking the bread. And several others help set the Sanctuary before and after each service. As you give thanks this week, remember to thank God for these special servants. JOIN THE STREAM TEAM! HELP US PROCLAIM “JESUS LIVES!” LIVE ON THE WEB EVERY SUNDAY DURING EVERY SERVICE

MINISTRY OF CARING - YOU CAN HELP
St. Matthew said that at the last judgment Jesus will say these words: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” (Matthew 25:35-36). One of the ways our congregation cares for others is through our trained Stephen Ministers, who go to those in need and care for them. Continue sharing in this, our church’s ministry, by praying for our Stephen Ministers and for their care receivers. SHARE YOUR JOYS AND CONCERNS WITH US Your pastoral staff and leaders of Christ Church’s Member Care Ministries want to share in your joys and concerns. You might not know this, but hospitals do not contact churches – even when you give them your church name, address, and contact information. Part of this is due to HIPPA laws. So whether you’re about to enter the hospital or you’re celebrating the birth of a baby, please call Sandy White in the church office at 281.980.6888. She will forward your message to the pastors and appropriate member care ministry leaders.
