N E E D?
What Do I Need? will be our upcoming sermon series. In a 2010 study by Harvard researchers published in the journal American Sociological Review, it was discovered that people who went to church regularly reported greater life satisfaction than those who did not. The critical factor was the quality of friendships made in church. People who went to church but had no close friends there were no happier than people who never went to church. When the researchers compared people who had the same number of close friends, the ones who had close friends from church were more satisfied with their lives. It is believed that the forming of friendships based on mutual interests and beliefs (and meeting consistently based on that mutual bond) is what makes the difference.
There is a lot of information out there that tells you what you need to be happy and fulfilled. Some of the information is helpful. Most of it is not. What does the biblical witness say you need?
June 3 rd: We will be looking at the fact that You Need Jesus. In the story of the rich young ruler (John 3:117), we find an educated and religious man with a void in his life. We all need something in our lives that will transform evil to good, darkness to light, hate to love, ugliness to beauty, stinginess to generosity, and sin to salvation.
June 10th: You Need to Unite Around Hope and Love. Our basic loyalties in life begin in our family and extend to the church, community and nation. The Bible holds out for us the ultimate challenge to declare our loyalty to God by being followers of Jesus Christ. In Mark 3:20-35 we record Jesus saying: “A family divided into groups that fight will fall apart. A house divided into groups that fight will fall apart.” Christ tells us that we need to unite around hope and love!
June 17 th: You Need to Witness. Jesus Christ is the supreme witness. Christian witness is always a sharing in His witness, which takes the form of proclamation of the kingdom, service to neighbor, and the total gift of self even if that act of giving leads to the cross. Just as the Father sent the Son in the power of the Holy Spirit, so believers are sent in mission to witness in word and action to the love of the triune God. May we plant seeds and may we reap a great harvest! (Mark 4:26-34)
June 24th: You Need to Trust Jesus. No matter what storms hit our lives, we need not be afraid but rather trust in Jesus to calm our storms and show us the way. (Mark 4:35-41)
Start your summer off right and come to church, where your needs will be met by a loving Savior who will give you great satisfaction in this life and in the life to come.
See you Sunday,

WHAT DO I
UNITED METHODIST MOMENT
A Little Piece of Methodist Pie BY REV. LINDA SUMMERS PIERCE EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATE PASTOR
Near the end of the eighteenth century and during the beginning of the nineteenth century, an extreme form of revivalism blazed across the American frontier. With its strong emphasis on God’s grace, and its focus on the emotional and physical manifestations of having received that grace, these revivals – known as “camp meetings” – shaped the practice of every Protestant denomination that existed at the time. Methodism was not only caught up in this movement, it also held on to the practice for some time after these revivals had ceased in other denominations. One reason for this is they provided a perfect venue for the itinerate system established by Wesley to “spread Scriptural holiness across the land.” It was often said of circuitriding preachers that even when blizzards blew and freezing rain fell, nobody would be out except crows and Methodist preachers!
Crowds would come from many miles around, sometimes numbering in the tens of thousands, to camp out for several weeks in tents, lean-tos, and covered wagons. Families would cook over open fires, often sharing what they had so all could eat. The preaching took place on a raised platform onto which one or more simple pulpits had been placed. When the trumpet blew, the people knew it was time for “assembly” – time for singing old gospel hymns and camp songs, and time for convicting preaching meant to inspire hearers to “flee from the wrath to come.” “Camp meetings” were as much social events as they were religious events. Young people often found their mates while “at meeting,” and families, ordinarily separated by distance, would enjoy extended times of reunion and fellowship.
John Wesley may have had a difficult time identifying with the “camp meeting” movement. Their emphasis on “being in the Spirit” was not quite the same as the “vital piety” he had hoped for in the early days of the Methodist movement in England. He would have disagreed that all one needed was an emotional experience of God’s grace. Such an experience was important, but of equal, if not greater importance, was a changed lifestyle characterized by a desire to transform the world. One who was truly converted would love both God and neighbor. Wesley never separated personal and social holiness, and insisted that Methodists do all the good they could, as often as they could, everywhere they could.
There were other things Wesley would have frowned upon, especially the low regard for the Sacraments and the practice of “re-converting” those who kept “falling out of grace”. Nevertheless, even Wesley would agree that God sometimes works in mysterious ways. No doubt God worked through the “camp meeting” movement to bring many into a right relationship with Jesus Christ. Fredrick A. Norwood, author of The Story of American Methodism, wrote: “. . . the camp meeting left its own permanent mark on Methodism, especially in the south. If some lost the marks of grace too easily, others retained deep convictions for the rest of their lives. Certainly, a church enlivened by camp meetings was not likely to suffer early senility.”
“Methodist Pie” is an old song that historian and chronicler Wayne Erbsen considers one of the 50 greatest old-time “camp meeting” gospel songs. It was recorded three times from 1927 through the 1940’s. It’s likely still sung in the few “camp meetings” that continue in places like Davidson Campground near Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and elsewhere around the south. Enjoy the words, and have a piece of “Methodist Pie” as your summer begins. And be sure to save the date for our church-wide picnic on Sunday afternoon, July 1 st. Maybe someone will bring one of these pies! We will be publishing periodic articles on our United Methodist heritage and beliefs. If you have a topic you would like addressed, please send your requests to Karen LaMotta at KarenL@cumcsl.org.

I was down to camp meetin’ the other afternoon to hear them shout and sing, for to tell each other how they love one another; and to make hallelujah ring. There’s old Uncle Daniel, and Brother Ebenezer, with his lame gal, Sue, Aunt Polly and Melinda and old Mother Bender. Well, I never seen a happier crew. Chorus: Oh, little children, I believe. Oh, little children, I believe. Oh, little children, I believe, I’m a Methodist ‘til I die. I’m a Methodist, a Methodist, ‘tis my belief, Methodist ‘til I die. When old grim Death comes a knockin’ at the door, I’m a Methodist ‘til I die. Well, they all go there for to have a good time, and to eat that grub so sly, have applesauce butter with sugar in the gourd, and a great big Methodist pie. Well, you ought to hear the ringing when they all get to singing that good old “Bye and Bye;” see Jimmy McGee in the top of a tree, saying, “How is this for high?” (Chorus)

PAGE.05
Then they catch a hold of hands and march around the ring, kept a-singing all the while. You’d think it was a cyclone coming through the air; you can hear them shout a half a mile. Then the bell rings loud and the great big crowd, breaks ranks and up they fly, while I took board on the sugar in the gourd, and I cleaned up the Methodist pie. (Chorus)
SOMETIMES WE ARE HELPERS; SOMETIMES WE NEED HELP.
WOULD YOU LIKE SOMEONE TO WALK WITH YOU? In Galatians 6, Paul tells us to “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” At Christ Church our Stephen Ministers have been trained and organized to do just that. They provide confidential, one-to-one care, prayer and support to those who are going through a difficult time. If you would like more information on how a Stephen Minister might walk through those hard times with you, contact referrals coordinator Sally McKnight at 713.306.1719.

Most of us find the month of May to be a particularly busy time of year. When adding end-of-year events and activities at our children’s school to an already lengthy list of to-dos, we hit a “wall,” of sorts. We become tired – tired of the burdens of these school and extracurricular activities, tired of matters at work, tired of the many responsibilities facing us at home – tired of everything! Last year at this time, I found myself in this state, and it occurred to me that what I needed more than anything was a break from all things routine… a chance for some rest and relaxation. With that determined, my dearest friend and I hopped in my
car and traveled to one of my favorite places on earth – Austin, Texas! Once there, we were blessed to spend a few days together enjoying a muchneeded respite from the everyday matters of life. In the midst of the quiet in which we delighted during this time, I came to understand the reason for my weariness: I had been trying to accomplish the tasks on my lengthy to-do list under my own strength, rather than resting and trusting in the power of Christ to move me through them. This is a mistake I’ve made all too often through the years.
REST In the eleventh chapter of Matthew, Christ instructs: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” The kind of rest that Christ offers is mine for the taking, but too many times I neglect to grab hold of it. I fail to rest in Him. When I finally remember to get out
of my own way and rest in Christ, the length of my todo list doesn’t necessarily change, but my heart and attitude certainly do! Instead of being tired of the many responsibilities facing me at home, I become tired in them. Rather than being tired of work, I become tired in it. The differences between the words of and in within these statements may seem subtle and insignificant at first blush, but they are actually quite dramatic.
During these summer months and much like me, many of you will take to the road in search of some much-needed rest. It is my prayer that you’ll remember that true rest can be found in only one place, with no traveling required! May we all seek and find sweet, sweet rest… in the arms of Christ.

JUNE HEALING PRAYER WORSHIP SERVICE TUESDAY, JUNE 12• 7 PM • SANCTUARY
Summer doesn’t automatically bring a slower pace. Schedules tend to become even more over-booked. When you add to this pace the pain of sickness and grief, daily responsibilities can easily overwhelm. Come and rest in the presence of Jesus the Healer at the service on June 12 at 7 pm, in the Sanctuary. Come, be renewed in Him. BE VIBRANT IN THE SPIRIT! SUNDAY, JUNE 27
On May 27 we’ll celebrate the Day of Pentecost, the fiftieth and last day of the Easter season. It was on this day the Church received the gift of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 2). The parament color will change to red to reflect the fire with which God’s Spirit infused the church. You’re invited to wear red as a sign you are alive and “vibrant” in the Spirit. Thanks be to God for all the gifts of God’s Spirit! THANK YOU, “LAY LITURGISTS”
A huge “THANK YOU” to all you who have responded to an invitation to serve as a Lay Liturgist in Sanctuary worship during the months of July, August, and September. Your leadership will be a gift and a blessing to Rev. Mike and the congregation. May God bless you with an extra measure of delight and joy as you serve Him in order to allow Him to bless others through you!

Children will be given a smaller sack in their Sunday School class. Please place your donations in collection barrels in the Gathering Hall and Family Life Center entrances on June 17 or June 24. ONE DAY: GOD’S HOUSE SATURDAY, JUNE 30 • 8 AM* - 3:30 PM *BREAKFAST BEGINS AT 7 AM
Join us for our next Carpenter’s Hands workday. Breakfast (beginning at 7 am) and lunch are included. Our day will begin at 8 am with a devotion. Crews will be made up of a mix of skill levels, with at least one or two members having prior experience. Our purpose is to beautify the church as well as add practical improvements to the facility that will enhance current usages. Types of work available include: cleaning (carpet and floors), patching and painting (interior and exterior), repairing drywall, cleaning out storage areas, shelving in storage areas, power washing, and refurbishing classrooms. Please sign up in advance if you are willing to help; this will help us plan our work crews and organize the work we hope to accomplish. You can sign up in the Ministry Center, online or by emailing Roland at roro@ cumcsl.org. This event is open to all adults as well as youth 12 and up (if accompanied by a parent). If you can’t attend, but you still want to support this effort, you can make a financial donation to help purchase supplies. Drop off a check in the church office (indicate “Carpenter’s Hands” in the memo line of your check), or you may donate online. UM ARMY 2012 JULY 22 - 28
Join us in the summer of 2012, as we will be hosted by St. Paul’s UMC in Bridge City, TX for our UM Army Mission. During this week, participants will be assigned to work teams which combine their unique strengths and gifts in order to meet the home repair and maintenance needs of the less fortunate in the area. This is an amazing mission that allows us to share the Gospel message of love and hope offered by Jesus Christ through our hands and our hearts. For more info and to register, please visit www.cumcsl.org/youth. EFBHNM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

COLLEGE MISSION TO BELIZE
We now have a group of prayer ministry volunteers ready to pray on a moment’s notice for those in crisis due to an emergency situation, accident, tragedy, or sudden loss. They will make up the Emergency Prayer Team. These volunteers, who come from all of Christ Church’s present Member Care ministries and from Sunday School classes and other groups, will be notified of the situation via email, once the person in crisis contacts the church office and gives their permission for this team to be notified. Persons requesting this team to “stop and pray” should consider that information will be shared and may eventually spread to other prayer teams in the community. For those wanting to keep their situation confidential, the online Prayer Request is still the best option. Volunteers in Member Care ministries at Christ Church include those who will become a part of this new Emergency Prayer Team, those on the Care Team who respond to submitted Prayer Requests, members of Hearts of Grace who pray for concerns shared in Care Team and Staff Meetings, Altar Prayer Partners who serve on Sundays during worship, members of the Healing Prayer Worship Service Planning Team, and trained Stephen Ministers who offer distinctively Christian caregiving as compassionate listeners. Christ Church is known as a “praying church.” Establishing this Emergency Prayer Team provides another way for her “prayer warriors” to serve Jesus Christ and their brothers and sisters in Christ. Please contact Sandy White or Linda Summers Pierce to volunteer or request member care support. HOPE FOR HAITI MISSION NOW TAKING APPLICATIONS
“That which you do for the least of these my brethen, you do for me,” Matthew 25:40. Hope is alive in the churches of Haiti. Come with us as examples of Christ’s love and help fan the spark of hope in Haiti. Registration is now open for our team of 10 going to Haiti October 29. 4 mandatory meetings will be held on 7/22, 9/23, 10/7 and 10/21. Visit www.cumcsl.org/missions for registration and more details. SENIOR RINGERS MONDAYS • 6 PM • CHOIR ROOM
This musical opportunity is available to all interested persons, especially older adults. It offers a place to learn, serve, and fellowship through the art of ringing chimes or handbells under the direction of Molly Ness. No experience is necessary. To join this ensemble, contact Molly Ness at 281.344.8343. Joy Bells and Senior Ringers rehearse at 6 pm and the Jubilation Ringers at 7 pm. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY MONDAYS & FRIDAYS • 9 AM • VOLUNTEER CENTER
Join members of all ages as they create tangible expressions of the prayers of our church for those needing comfort, healing, assurance, and presence. We meet Fridays and Mondays. Don’t know how to crochet or knit? We’ll teach you! Email Jan Randolph at jan@cumcsl. org for information.
This August, our college students will be partnering with a local church in Belize to do construction on a parsonage and evangelizing with youth and the community in Dangriga. We are looking for monetary donations, and seeking four additional college students who feel called to be part of this experience. Much work, prayer and support will be needed make this happen. Contact Shey Fiscus at shey@cumcsl.org for more information. DISCUSS IT WITH GOD!
Nothing is too large or too small to take to our Lord in prayer. We are seeking those interested in becoming a Stephen Minister. Stephen Ministry is one-on-one confidential Christian caregiving. When we have enough persons showing an interest in serving as Stephen Ministers, training will be scheduled. So take this opportunity to pray to the Lord and seek His guidance. This may be just the ministry He has prepared for you! To indicate your interest and/or find out more about Stephen Ministry, contact Sally McKnight at 713.306.1719. ALTAR PRAYER PARTNERS WELCOMED
In every Sanctuary worship service, worshippers are invited to spend time at the Altar in prayer. In two of the services, 8:15 and 11:05 am, Altar Prayer Partners come and stand behind the rail, ready to pray with any who kneel and open their hands to receive prayer. Philippians 4:6-7 says: “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Altar Prayer Partners seek the peace of Christ for those in need of prayer. If God has given you the ability to pray, consider becoming an Altar Prayer Partner. Contact Pam Allan at family@pallan.net or Rev. Linda Summers Pierce at lindasp@cumcsl.org to learn more. CARE TEAM OPENINGS
Has God given you a compassionate heart? Do you have the gift of connecting others with the love of God? Are you able to bear another’s burden in confidence and Christian love? Then there is a place for you to serve. The Monday morning Care Team ministry needs a few more willing, compassionate servants to join their team. Members meet from 10 am to noon on Mondays to report on their contacts with those who’ve submitted prayer requests. Christ Church is known in our community as a “praying church” and the Care Team is a huge reason why that’s so. If you think God may be calling you to this powerful ministry of mercy and grace, please contact Rev. Linda Summers Pierce at lindasp@cumcsl.org, or the Care Team Leader, Stacy Howdeshell at howdeshell1@yahoo.com. UM ARMY NEEDS YOUR HELP!

SHARE YOUR JOYS AND CONCERNS WITH US Your pastoral staff and leaders of Christ Church’s Member Care Ministries want to share in your joys and concerns. You might not know this, but hospitals do not contact churches – even when you give them your church name, address, and contact information. Part of this is due to HIPPA laws. So whether you’re about to enter the hospital or you’re celebrating the birth of a baby, please call Sandy White in the church office at 281.980.6888.
