A SPECIAL

T H A N K YO U BY REV. MIKE MAYHUGH SENIOR PASTOR

The Catch Up Campaign was a huge success, and we have caught up! Our goal for the campaign was to receive $166,000, and we received just under $200,000! Praise God! Thank you to everyone who helped us out. You are truly a wonderful congregation, and I appreciate you all so very much!

WOULD YOU LIKE SOMEONE TO WALK WITH YOU? In Galatians 6, Paul tells us to “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” At Christ Church our Stephen Ministers have been trained and organized to do just that. They provide confidential, one-to-one care, prayer and support to those who are going through a difficult time. If you would like more information on how a Stephen Minister might walk through those hard times with you, contact referrals coordinator Sally McKnight at 713.306.1719.

I am also so very proud of the congregation for parking off site to make room for our 103 first time visitors and 250 ongoing visitors. We had a wonderful celebration of Christ’s resurrection with over 2,500 people attending one of 5 different worship services. It took every one of us working hard to make this happen! So my hat is off to all of you who made the day such a grand Easter.

I am overwhelmed by the extravagant generosity of your time, talents, gifts, and services! God’s glory was revealed mightily through you! Christ is Risen!

Happily yours,

SWIMMING IN

G O D ’ S G R AC E BY ROBERT MCBURNETT

I have heard this story in many forms over the years, usually to illustrate the fact that we are often chasing ourselves silly in pursuit of something we believe to be in short supply that in reality is quite abundant. It speaks to our human nature to be fearful of what might happen “out there” in the future, when often the solution exists all around us.

I began thinking the other day that this is the way it is with God’s grace. We hear the fishers of men (pastors) extolling the essential nature of God’s grace – that we will die if we remain outside His grace, and this discussion sends many hearers off in a frantic search for God’s grace. Like the young fish, we begin searching, frantically seeking for something that was all around us all along. We get the idea that we must somehow obtain it. We also get the misguided idea that it is in short supply and if we don’t secure our fair share, it will be used up by others and we will be left without. Like water to the fish, God’s grace surrounds us. It is all around us. We breathe it in and breathe it out. We literally f loat in it all day, every day. It is so ubiquitous that we rarely notice its existence. Only when we move into the shallow areas or try to extricate ourselves from our natural environment do we notice it being in short supply. Grace abounds and buoys us up. Grace is the primary component of our being. We were specifically designed to f loat in it constantly. We can’t lose it. We can’t escape it. We can, however, deprive ourselves of its lifesustaining qualities. Like the young fish, we need to relax, soak it in, and appreciate it for what it is. We need to be thankful that a loving God saw our need and provided for it without even having to be asked. We need to rest in the comfort that it is abundant and there is more than enough to meet the needs of all the fish in the lake. God knew our nature and cared enough to provide us His grace. It is there for the taking. We don’t have to earn it, accumulate it, or store it up. It is here today, tomorrow and into the future. Swimming in the warmth of His grace is what we were designed to do.

A young fish was swimming under the boat when he overheard two fishermen discussing the weather and their fears of a coming drought in the summer. One of them remarked that if they couldn’t assure a steady supply of water, surely everything in the region would die. The second fisherman agreed saying, “It’s a known fact that everything will die without water.” This sent the fish into a tailspin. He didn’t know what water was, but he was certain that he had better secure some right away. He swam frantically all over the lake seeking water. He breathlessly asked the other fish if they knew where he could get water, but they did not. He even mustered all his strength and swam through the rapids and over the dam in his quest, to no avail. Exhausted and exasperated, he returned home in great despair. Along came one of the lake elders and found him in this state. “What has you so frazzled, little one?” he inquired. “I’ve been all over this lake and the next one, too, searching for water. If we don’t find some soon, we will all surely die.” “Well,” the senior fish asked, “Do you know what water is? What it looks like?” “No.” replied the young fish, “That is the most frustrating part. Not only can’t I find any, I don’t even know what it looks like.” The senior fish then patted him on the head with his pectoral fin and said, “Fear not, little one. Water is all around us. It is what all us fish swim in every day. It is all around us and never leaves us.”

UNITED METHODIST MOMENT

Connected through Conferencing BY REV. LINDA SUMMERS PIERCE EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATE PASTOR

“And the twelve called together the whole community of disciples. . .” Acts 6:2a “The apostles and elders met together to consider this matter.” Acts 15:6 This is a General Conference year in The United Methodist Church. General Conference meets every four years and convenes the legislative body of our denomination. Delegates are elected in every Annual Conference and Central Conference in their sessions the year before this conference is set to meet. Between April 24 and May 4, some 600 to 1,000 delegates (made up of equal clergy and lay representation) will gather in Tampa, Florida. They will address every petition submitted for consideration (literally, thousands) and make decisions related to The Book of Discipline (our United Methodist book of law), determine organizational and/or structural changes, set budgets, establish goals for mission outreach and deliver statements on behalf of the whole church.

This is also the year that Jurisdictional Conference will meet. Our jurisdiction, the South Central Jurisdiction, is made up of the Annual Conferences in the following eight states: Texas (5 separate Annual Conferences in Texas), New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, and Kansas. This body will meet in mid-July. Bryan Tullos of Christ Church is an elected delegate. He and the other delegates will be electing bishops from among those lifted up by the separate Annual Conferences as their “candidates.”

From Wesley’s day, and through all the years since he convened the first Christmas Conference, Methodists have understood themselves to be part of a connected community that needed to come together regularly and “confer” in order to decide together what to do together for the good of the whole. This plan wasn’t Wesley’s creation but a continuation of what the church had done from the beginning. (See the verses from Acts.) “Conferencing,” with its guarantee of a basic democratic process, still undergirds our denomination and insures that policy decisions are in the hands of the conference body, not in the hands of bishops. This doesn’t mean there won’t ever be disagreements or

PAGE.04

Christ United Methodist Church www.cumcsl.org

debates or that news reports on the more controversial decisions won’t disturb members; it just means that at the end of the day, the conference body will complete its tasks, and their recommendations and decisions will then be addressed in the Annual Conferences. No big changes will ever happen in this denomination without the support of the Annual Conferences.

There are several big decisions before this session of General Conference. You can read about them online by searching “General Conference, The United Methodist Church.” It looks like the budget will be smaller, some significant down-sizing will occur in the denomination’s general-level boards and agencies, and ordained clergy will have to be effective in order to continue to be appointed. Significant emphasis will be placed on improving global health, ministering to those in poverty, revitalizing congregations in decline, and developing leaders with strong Christian principles, all good things. The main mission of the denomination will not change: United Methodists are called to “make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”

As those in the early church saw the need to come together and “confer” in order to stay “connected” in their mission of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ, so we, too, continue to “confer” for the same purpose. Please join me in praying for all these conferences, including our own Annual Conference which will take place at the Galveston Convention Center in early June. Pray for those who have been elected to represent us and for the guidance of God’s Holy Spirit toward decisions that support the calling of sharing the Good News of the gospel of Jesus Christ and partnering with Him in transforming this world. Finally, should you find yourself tempted to focus solely on the controversial stories which will break on the morning and evening news, go online and read the Daily Christian Advocate, a magazine which will do a more thorough job of reporting the work of General Conference. Stay connected through conferencing. We will be publishing periodic articles on our United Methodist heritage and beliefs. If you have a topic you would like addressed, please send your requests to Karen LaMotta at KarenL@cumcsl.org.

Jesus Christ these three important questions: “What is the plan of your life, the one life God has entrusted to you? Are you investing it in a ministry which gives priority to working with people? Do you have your person or your small group in whom and through whom you are multiplying yourself?”

God has blessed all of us with “many wonderful gifts” and we’re to use those gifts in the service of others in ways that bear fruit and lead others to follow Christ. The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and our mission as Christ Church is to be people helping people find fullness in Christ. By exercising our God-given gifts in the service of others, we not only lead people to fullness in Christ, we also deepen our own and others’ commitments to Jesus Christ. We not only multiply Christ’s presence through our efforts, we also strengthen our leadership and Christ’s leadership through us, nurturing new leaders who, in turn, will exercise their God-given gifts for the same purpose. This is why God gives us gifts in the first place. They are to bear this kind of fruit.

Our strategy for bearing fruit as a church is to WORSHIP, CONNECT, GROW and SERVE. It’s through worship that we connect with others in meaningful opportunities for growth and service, all of which bear amazing fruit as our God-given gifts are exercised on Christ’s behalf. Because each facet of our strategy is critically important for leading others to fullness in Christ, each one will receive its own time of special emphasis throughout the year. This means we are dividing our regular annual STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN into four separate campaigns. The first one to be emphasized will be SERVE. Our SERVE CAMPAIGN will begin April 22 and continue through SERVE SUNDAY, MAY 6. Our GROW CAMPAIGN will begin in mid-July and will lead to a time of commitment on GROW/PROMOTION SUNDAY, AUGUST 26. Our WORSHIP CAMPAIGN will begin on the first Sunday of Advent and lead to our celebration of CHRISTMAS. In October, in between GROW and WORSHIP, we will hold our annual campaign for financial commitments. (CON’T NEXT PAGE)

We are currently in our SERVE CAMPAIGN. As in the past, a comprehensive list of all the opportunities for service is available on-line or via a hard copy booklet at the church. The ministry listings include a C or an S notation to clarify between: 1) opportunities for service during the calendar year; and 2) opportunities for service during the school year.

week and every month to make 300 to 400 Member Care contacts. On any given Sunday, our Children’s and Youth ministry areas require over 100 servants to nurture disciples-in-the-making. An additional 100 to 150 are needed to support summer Children’s and Youth ministries. 20 to 25 servants are needed throughout the school year to help make disciples in Adult Sunday School and small groups.

We’re asking you to do the following:

Opportunities in worship include everything from singing to reading to ushering to preparing and serving Communion. In addition to the musicians, at least 24 to 30 out-front and behind-the-scenes servants are needed every Sunday, with twice that number needed on Communion Sundays. And every Sunday, at least a dozen servants are needed to welcome all of us to worship, providing a warm and hospitable environment for connecting with each other. In fact, choosing to serve on Sundays first is a great way to begin serving Christ’s church.

SABBATICAL, CHAPTER 2 BY REV. LINDA SUMMERS PIERCE EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATE PASTOR

With this advice, and not much more, I began the process of discernment through prayer, study, and numerous conversations with family, friends, and colleagues. Two things were very clear to me: 1) I wanted time with grandchildren; and 2) I needed time alone. Extended time with the grandchildren would definitely “make my heart sing,” and time alone would grant me the solitude I needed to reconnect with the One who inspires all singing. I also had a dream that someday I might visit the monastic community on the Isle of Iona off the western coast of Scotland. This community has had a profound inf luence on my understanding of worship. My spouse, Bob, had a dream of his own, and I wanted to honor it if I could. His dream was to return to England and celebrate dinner with me at “High Table” at Trinity College in Cambridge, a privilege afforded him because he had once been a student there. Of course there were other things on my bucket list: returning to South Africa for three months of missionary service, tagging along with a National Geographic crew while they trekked across the Galapagos Islands, building a simple, but permanent, home for my disabled son, and on and on. I hardly knew where to begin. After considering my spouse’s needs and our family’s needs, a proposal began to take shape in my heart, one that revolved around the theme of “worship.” Gradually the pieces came together. In July, we’ll be in San Antonio, living in community with our children and grandchildren in a large rental property. In the mornings, I’ll work with the children on designing worship that speaks to their age and stage of spiritual development. We’ll visit the “fun” local attractions during the day, and read and tell lots of stories at night after a meal together and time of “family worship.” In August, Bob and I will travel to Great Britain where we will live in monastic community on Iona for about 10 days. Though we’ll be in separate quarters while there, we’ll see each other during the five times of worship each day, and

we’ll be able to attend classes together. From Iona, Scotland, we’ll go to England, and follow in John Wesley’s footsteps while we see the sights and make arrangements for dinner at Trinity College. Finally, in September, I’ll travel to Oregon where I’ll be joined by my youngest son. He and I will hike the northernmost portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. I wanted to take this hike alone, but my family frowned upon that idea, so he’s promised to accompany me as a “silent” partner, who has permission, of course, to steer me in the right direction and alert me to the presence of hungry, wild things. I hope to draw deeply from the wellsprings of God’s Spirit while on the trail. Allison Thummel has been graciously serving as my trainer for this hike, and I am deeply indebted to her for her skill, persistence, and, most of all, for her patience. There are many details yet to be addressed with regard to the sabbatical itself, and many bases to cover here at the church. Whatever time I can find in the next ten weeks will be spent securing volunteer help with worship leadership and member care support. You may receive a letter from me inviting you to offer the pastoral prayer in worship or lead a team in shortterm planning. If you’re willing to serve in those or other capacities, I hope you’ll respond so dates may be scheduled. There are 42 worship services to cover, and meetings and planning sessions too numerous to count. Rev. Glenn Morrison has already agreed to serve as the pastoral care minister in my absence for which he’ll be compensated with grant money. In fact, he agreed before the grant application was mailed. (Thank you, Glenn.) Another retired pastor in our congregation may also be able to serve in some capacity. In the meantime David Daniels has been asked to research Christian bands for a concert here at Christ Church to help us celebrate the conclusion of the fall Stewardship Campaign. $4,500 of grant money will be used to make this concert possible. I ask for your prayers as plans progress – and especially, as they don’t progress. Though I’m not opposed to “following my nose” when it comes to setting out on my own adventures, I don’t want to leave the church and her staff without needed support. Please join me in praying that God will provide every worship leader and member care supporter we need.

Grace and Peace, Linda Note: This is the second of several chapters that will be shared regarding Linda Summers Pierce’s sabbatical this July through September. people helping people find fullness in Christ worship • connect • grow • serve

A sabbatical funded by the Lilly Endowment may take many forms. Those who read the applications and choose the recipients are not looking for any one specific model. But they are looking for applicants who can “think outside the box” as they answer the question, “What will make your heart sing?” Past recipients have used the time for everything from uninterrupted reading and study to visiting remote places of beauty. Some have chosen to be with family; others to be alone. As the possibilities are endless, there is no one “right” proposal. The best proposals are well-researched, balanced, and sensible.

THE WORSHIPFUL WORK OF SERVING

The entire Body of Christ benefits whenever anyone serves Christ with their worshipful work. Becoming Christ’s servant in worship is one way to complete Christ’s work in the world. Christ needs persons to tend to His table, preparing it for Communion and administering His body and blood. Christ needs persons to assist in reading God’s Word and welcoming all who come to worship Him. Christ needs persons to share their ministries of prayer and their gift of singing. How will you serve Christ in your church? Commit to the worshipful work of serving Christ on Serve Sunday, May 6. (To learn about all the opportunities related to worship, contact Sandy White or Linda Summers Pierce.) WORD OF THANKS!

PAGE.10

The Worship Planning Team would like to say a special word of “thanks” to all those who helped make our celebrations of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday welcoming and meaningful for everyone who attended. “Thank You!” to all the children who increased our Palm Sunday joy! “Thank You!” to the cast, crew, and costume-stitchers (Piecemakers) who made our Maundy Thursday tableau possible! “Thank You!” to our Choir and musicians for a heartfelt Good Friday service and a glorious Easter celebration! And, finally, “Thank You!” to every Easter at the Creek volunteer who chose to serve at the church this year! Your help and hospitality were greatly appreciated in the Sanctuary and the Family Life Center. Because of your leadership and involvement, our church has been blessed. So we thank God for your willingness to serve in ways that helped all here experience fullness in Christ, our resurrected Savior! Christ United Methodist Church www.cumcsl.org

BIG HOUSE 2012 - SPACE IS LIMITED TO THE FIRST 15 YOUTH WHO REGISTER JUNE 14 - 17 • CALDWELL, TX

We want to give opportunity for youth, 6th through the 8th grade, to come together and grow in their Christian experience, through all aspects of our mission, whether it be on the worksite, or in fellowship with one another. For more info and to register, please visit www. cumcsl.org/youth. UM ARMY 2012 JULY 22 - 28

Join us in the summer of 2012, as we will be hosted by St. Paul’s UMC in Bridge City, TX for our UM Army Mission. During this week, participants will be assigned to work teams which combine their unique strengths and gifts in order to meet the home repair and maintenance needs of the less fortunate in the area. This is an amazing mission that allows us to share the Gospel message of love and hope offered by Jesus Christ through our hands and our hearts. For more info and to register, please visit www.cumcsl.org/youth. DID YOU KNOW?

That each and every single $1 bill collected in the offering plate goes to help people in need? These Mission Dollars make a difference locally and around the world! PHONE VOLUNTEERS

Here is your chance to be that first friendly voice people hear when they call our church. Volunteer to take a half-day shift at our receptionist desk each week. We will train you to operate the switchboard, help you to know how to answer questions, and equip you in every way to perform this important task. For more information, contact Debbie Meier at dmeier@cumcsl.org.

READY TO PRAY!

We now have a group of prayer ministry volunteers ready to pray on a moment’s notice for those in crisis due to an emergency situation, accident, tragedy, or sudden loss. They will make up the Emergency Prayer Team. These volunteers, who come from all of Christ Church’s present Member Care ministries and from Sunday School classes and other groups, will be notified of the situation via email, once the person in crisis contacts the church office and gives their permission for this team to be notified. Persons requesting this team to “stop and pray” should consider that information will be shared and may eventually spread to other prayer teams in the community. For those wanting to keep their situation confidential, the online Prayer Request is still the best option. Volunteers in Member Care ministries at Christ Church include those who will become a part of this new Emergency Prayer Team, those on the Care Team who respond to submitted Prayer Requests, members of Hearts of Grace who pray for concerns shared in Care Team and Staff Meetings, Altar Prayer Partners who serve on Sundays during worship, members of the Healing Prayer Worship Service Planning Team, and trained Stephen Ministers who offer distinctively Christian caregiving as compassionate listeners. Christ Church is known as a “praying church.” Establishing this Emergency Prayer Team provides another way for her “prayer warriors” to serve Jesus Christ and their brothers and sisters in Christ. Please contact Sandy White or Linda Summers Pierce to volunteer or request member care support.

WANTED: COMPASSIONATE HEARTS

Has God gifted you with a heart for walking alongside those in pain, being still and listening to their struggles with compassion? Have you received confirmation through the Holy Spirit that God does indeed answer prayers? Do you believe, as Saint Paul said in 2 Corinthians 1:5 that: “just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows”? Then God may be calling you to serve in one of Christ Church’s Member Care ministries. Compassionate hearts for companioning are needed. Consider how you can offer the compassionate heart of Christ through the ministries of the Care Team, Hearts of Grace, Pray Now!, and Altar Prayer. Sign up on Serve Sunday, May 6. (For details on these and other member care opportunities, contact Sandy White or Linda Summers Pierce.) ADOPT A MEXICO VBS CRAFT

Great Family Project! We need 4 families or individuals willing to come up with 2 VBS crafts for the children in Mexico. Adopt a Craft would also involve purchasing enough supplies so 300 children can make each craft (you would have a $200 church budget) and then making some completed samples of each craft. No need to purchase markers, crayons, pencils, scissors or glue. Everything would need to be returned to the church by the morning of July 13 to load into the vans heading for the Mexico border. This is a great way to help the children of Mexico from your own casa! Contact Mexico Missions at 281.690.4755 as soon as possible...these 4 chances to serve fill up quickly!
