HERE’S A THANKSGIVING CHALLENGE! BY REV. LINDA SUMMERS PIERCE EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATE PASTOR

Giving thanks is a Christian’s truest response to God’s grace in Jesus Christ. Gratitude is a Christian’s motive for worship and orientation toward life. Thanksgiving is the disposition of a Christian’s heart. As such it needs to be developed, cultivated, and enlarged over time, with the full awareness that even it stands in need of God’s redemption and sanctification.

thing they do holy and worshipful work. Thank the custodians for providing a safe and clean place for coming together as community. Thank the Member Care and Prayer volunteers for interceding on behalf of the most vulnerable in our family. Thank the younger ones for their energy and the older ones for their wisdom. Thank the leaders for their boldness and the followers for their presence. Thank everyone!

That said, here is a challenge for this season of Thanksgiving. Whenever and wherever you are with others from our church family, thank them! Express your genuine, heart-felt gratitude to them for their service, no matter what that service is. Thank the Greeters for making you feel welcome. Thank the Ushers for assisting you with a bulletin and seating. Thank the Acolytes for reminding you you’ve come to worship Jesus Christ. Thank the musicians for bringing you closer to God’s presence. Thank the Habitat volunteers for lending their time and skills to such great work. Thank the staff for considering every mundane

Here’s how to meet this challenge. Thank God first of all – for the gift of life and for eternal life in Jesus Christ, for loving you into being and guiding you through life’s trials, for granting you so many blessings you cannot count them all! As you undertake giving thanks in the f lesh, in person, and in the moment, your gratitude will grow and your capacity for love will increase. It’s been said that if you undertake a practice for 21 days it becomes a habit. So, if you begin the first of November, you may just have the best Thanksgiving Day you’ve ever experienced.

“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:3-6

CONTENTED I WILL BE BY LYNN TAYLOR COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT

Fanny Crosby understood all too well the concept of finding contentment in the midst of hardship. Crosby, a prolific writer, composed over 9,000 hymns during her lifetime – soaring works that praised God and the world He created. And yet, the positivity ref lected in her compositions strikes me as nothing short of remarkable when I consider that Crosby lived most of her years never seeing the world she so eloquently praised, given a disease that robbed her of sight at a young age. About her blindness, Fanny Crosby wrote this poem: Oh, what a happy soul I am, although I cannot see. I am resolved that in this world, contented I will be. How many blessings I enjoy that other people don’t. To weep and sigh because I’m blind – I cannot, and I won’t! Fanny Crosby resolved to be content despite her hardship and, even more amazingly, had the ability to discern those blessings she could enjoy only because of her hardship! She stated that, had it not been for her aff liction, she might not have “so good an education or have so great an inf luence, and certainly not so fine a memory.” She also wrote, “It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were

offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.” What an incredible woman Fanny Crosby was! She made a conscious decision to live a life of contentment: to practice thankfulness in all things; to embrace and even rejoice in her hardships. I am moved and inspired by her story, so much so that I seek to emulate her attitude, especially when encountering my own life challenges. All who know me are well aware that there are days when I fail miserably in my attempts to do so. And still I strive to follow Fanny Crosby’s lead, celebrating the blessings that surround me and delighting in my hardships – all the while trusting that God will use me, just as I am, to accomplish whatever work He has purposed for my life. Thanksgiving Day is drawing near, so let’s determine that we’ll join my Facebook friends in accepting the challenge to give thanks. Not only during the forty days preceding Thanksgiving Day, but every day. And as we seek to identify the blessings in our lives, may God help us to remember that blessings can be found most anywhere, despite (and often because of) our circumstances. Fanny Crosby knew this to be true, and so she wrote with confidence, “…contented I will be.” May it be so for us all.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:4-7

Many of my Facebook friends are now taking the Forty Days of Thanksgiving challenge: each day for forty days, they are posting onto Facebook one thing for which they are thankful. The practice of daily identifying those things for which we are thankful is a great exercise, to be sure, as it helps us to move through life with a keener awareness of the many blessings God provides. And no matter how difficult our life circumstances might be, I truly believe there are always blessings to be found. Whether in the form of a verse of Scripture that speaks directly to our trial, a note from a friend, a hug from a loved one, an opportunity to rest, or a song that encourages – all of these are merciful gifts from a God who allows His children to experience comfort, peace and even contentment when dealing with the hardships that life often presents them.

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE BY LISA A. MAYHUGH 412 YOUTH DIRECTOR

“‘Be sure to set aside the best portions of the gifts given to you as your gifts to the LORD.’” Numbers 18:29 One of the definitions of attitude is “position.” That we should take the “position” of gratitude is foreign to us at times. Our attitudes are so quickly swayed by our emotions or our circumstances. And yet we are told in Ephesians 4:23 to “…let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.” It becomes a spiritual discipline to take the “position of gratitude.”

strength. As the horses get closer and closer, you can almost feel your own heart racing and your breathing begin to get more and more shallow. I remember thinking “they will never survive this battle; what is he thinking?” and yet with the leadership of William Wallace, Scotland went on to defeat England that day. This was the first battle among many. If Scotland’s men had decided to go with their emotions or circumstances, they would have never experienced the victory that day. If we let our circumstances or emotions drive our attitude, I doubt we would ever have gratitude first in our hearts. Think of your circumstances. They may seem as immense as what Scotland was facing. We certainly have no control over our circumstances nor do we have control over our emotions, but we do have an opportunity to trust in a Savior who will show us victory in our lives if we just “hold the position” of gratitude.

We certainly have no control over our circumstances nor do we have control over our emotions, but we do have an opportunity to trust in a Savior who will show us victory in our lives if we just “hold the position” of gratitude.

Think about it from the perspective of a military position. When soldiers take their stands on a field of battle they are told to “hold their position.” I’m reminded of the great movie Braveheart with Mel Gibson. In that movie there is a particular scene where William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson) is leading a very frightened but brave nation to “hold their position” against the coming onslaught of England’s army on horses. All they have to defeat this army are massive12’-15’ poles that have been sharpened to a point at their ends, and brute

PAGE.06

Christ United Methodist Church www.cumcsl.org

As you pray about what you are to give during this Generosity Campaign, ask yourself first: “What am I grateful for?” Against all odds I will “hold true to this position” and have an “attitude of gratitude.” “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God” Colossians 3:16.

SABBATICAL CHAPTER 6

BY REV. LINDA SUMMERS PIERCE

EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATE PASTOR

Two words best describe my time away – exhilarating and exhausting. There was not much time in between the experiences with family, in the United Kingdom, and on my hike, to journal, ref lect, or process my thoughts and feelings. I made several mental notes and did some writing, but I’ll be processing my experiences for the rest of my life, no doubt. Above all, I’m most grateful to God for the lessons that were mine to learn and re-learn. I share a few of those as a way of offering a summary report. 1. Not everything will go according to plan. There will always be unanticipated challenges like museum closures, traffic detours, failed equipment, conf licting schedules, and unseasonable or dreadful weather. Staying f lexible while engaging the circumstances makes it possible to make the most of these challenges and move on. More importantly, being completely open to God’s presence in the moment provides the most peaceful solution. When I failed to let God’s Spirit guide me out of whatever “mess” I/we were in, I lost patience, became unkind, and spoiled whatever “fruit” of the Spirit might have prevailed. When I managed, by God’s grace, to be led by God’s Spirit, the most amazing blessings resulted. Not everything will go according to plan, but if God is involved, everything will work for “good”, and everything did!

2. You can’t stay on the mountaintop forever. As beautiful and awe-inspiring as the great cathedrals of England were and as magnificent as the glacier-covered volcanic peaks of the Pacific Northwest appeared, it would have been impossible to remain in either. After touring half a dozen great cathedrals, I could no longer contain my feelings and simply wept upon entering the next. And as much as I wanted to stay near the top of the mountain, I knew we’d have to descend to find water, for the lifegiving rivers and streams ran through the lowest paths in the valleys. I was reminded that I did not have to wander in an architectural wonder or perch on the precipice of the heavens to be close to God. God’s presence is with us everywhere. So we depart the cathedral/church, empowered by our encounter with the Divine, to serve as God would have us serve, and we descend the mountain to be led by God through every valley, even the one whose shadow is death. God is God of the mountaintop experience and also God of the valley! 3. Gratitude opens the heart to joy. There were days I cringed at the thought of having to navigate another mile in a country with a particular fondness for “roundabouts”, and the unusual oppressive heat along the trail made every effort to climb the next incline doubly difficult. But as I gave thanks for each moment, each glorious setting, each person we met along the way, my capacity for joy increased. It became easier to whisper prayers of praise and thanksgiving for the beauty surrounding me and to truly “see” the magnificence of God’s glorious creation with all its inhabitants. We have so very much to be thankful for, every moment of every day. Thank you again for your prayers and support. This sabbatical experience has enriched my life, informed my ministry, taught me a few new things about “church”, and encouraged me to continue in service to the One who is above all and in all. Thanks be to God. Amen. people helping people find fullness in Christ worship • connect • grow • serve

PAGE.07

It is with great gratitude that I thank my family, my Christ Church family, Mike Mayhugh and the rest of the staff, John Pound and our Staff Parish Relations Committee, the many volunteers who led worship and oversaw the monthly Healing Prayer services, and the Lily Foundation for my Sabbatical experience. I’m especially grateful for my assistant, Sandy White, who truly was the “one” who made it possible for me to be away so long. And it’s with a heart full of thanksgiving that I acknowledge all of you who prayed for me, wrote notes of encouragement, and gifted me with tokens of your love and concern before my departure.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

UNITED METHODIST MOMENT

Methodists Bless God BY REV. LINDA SUMMERS PIERCE EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATE PASTOR

On June 21st (year unknown) John Wesley wrote the following prayer in his journal:

I humbly and heartily thank Thee for all the favors Thou hast bestowed on me: for creating me after Thine own image, for daily preserving me by Thy good providence, for redeeming me by the death of Thy blessed Son, and for the assistance of Thy Holy Spirit; for causing me to be born in a Christian country, for blessing me with plentiful means of salvation, with religious parents and friends, and frequent returns of Thy ever blessed sacrament. I also thank Thee for Thy temporal blessings; for the preservation of me this night, for my health, strength, food, raiment, and all the other comforts and necessities of life.

PAGE.10

Christ United Methodist Church www.cumcsl.org

Wesley thanked God for his life and his eternal life in Christ. He thanked God for all the ways the Holy Spirit guided his life and how he was nurtured and sustained with every celebration of Holy Communion. Then he went on to thank God for his heritage and religious freedom, for good parents and friends, and for practical things like food, clothing, good health, and simple comforts. He freely and gladly acknowledged God as the source of everything good in his life. He indicated he was indebted to God – forever! But this indebtedness was not a burden; it was precisely what motivated his Christian witness and service. Truly his gratitude enabled him to surrender himself to whatever place, station, or status life might bring him.

In essence, Wesley was blessing God for all of the blessings he had received from God. He knew the Jewish tradition, where every prayer was a blessing prayer, and each one began by blessing God: “Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe, for. . .” And he was familiar with the wisdom surrounding the berakoth, or blessing prayer: “It is forbidden to taste of this world without saying a blessing; whoever tastes of this world without saying a blessing commits unfaithfulness.” Thus it was completely natural for him to thank God for the most mundane things even as he praised God for those things of a divine nature: life and salvation and the sustenance of the Lord’s Supper.

In this season of giving thanks, faithful Methodists will find a way to thank God, and thus, bless God, through their prayers and deeds of service. As they say prayers of gratitude around bountiful Thanksgiving tables, faithful Methodists will likely name some of the same things Wesley did – life, eternal life, fellowship with Christ, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, religious freedom, the necessities of life, family members, meaningful work, and so on. Faithful Methodists will thank God for everything and everyone in their lives even before they know how life will turn out for them or the others. In other words, theirs will be a habit of counting (and recounting) their blessings and blessing God for each one. Faithful Methodists will not limit God to the status of Divine Dispenser of Blessings, but they will bless God so that in turn, they may be a blessing to others and a bless-er of others. So in this season of giving thanks, bless God and everyone at your table as you say grace over meals, bless God and your children as you kiss them goodnight, bless God and your spouses as you go about your days, bless God and your co-workers, bless God and your neighbors, bless God and your friends, bless God and total strangers. Practice blessing God and practice blessing others. There are no minimum requirements for blessings.

We will be publishing periodic articles on our United Methodist heritage and beliefs. If you have a topic you would like addressed, please send your requests to Karen LaMotta at KarenL@cumcsl.org.

Don’t know how to crochet or knit? We’ll teach you! For information, email Jan Randolph at jan@cumcsl.org. GIFT UNTO OTHERS

The Gift Unto Others (GUO) program provides gift-givers with an alternative to traditional, commercial gifts. These alternative gifts are perfect any time of the year to thank a teacher; honor committee members who have helped you; celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, memorials and, of course, Christmas. Browse through the GUO catalog for gift ideas, then place your order. In return, you will receive a card to present to your GUO recipient announcing a gift that is “from me, to you, for others!” Share in the joy that comes when you combine a gift-giving occasion with an opportunity to help others!
