I DARE US TO DO IT AGAIN! BY LYNN TAYLOR
After sharing his story in church that Sunday morning, the wealthy businessman returned to his place in the pew, where he sat next to an elderly woman. She whispered to this incredibly wealthy fellow, “So years ago you gave all you had to the Lord, huh?” He whispered back, “Yes, I did.” She thought a minute and said, “I dare you to do it again.”
As my faith grows and my desire to please God increases, I become ever more committed to the idea of giving to God. Not just once in a while, but again and again. I give not for anything I might gain in return, but for the same reasons most people who are in Christ decide to give: I give in response to all that God has done for me; as a form of worship and gratitude: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. ~John 3:16 I give to glorify God: Paul writes to the Corinthians and indicates that they are involved in this gracious work of giving, “which is being administered by us for the glory of the Lord Himself...” ~2 Corinthians 8:19 I give because what I have is not mine to keep: The earth is the 24:1. The home bank, the cars refrigerator are
Lord’s, and everything in it ~Psalm in which we live, the money in the in the driveway, the food in the all God’s! We are but caretakers of
these resources, and are called to utilize them to help those in need and to advance God’s kingdom here on earth. I give as an act of obedience, consistently and sacrificially: But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving. ~2 Corinthians 8:7 Honor the Lord from your wealth, and from the first of all your produce . . . ~Proverbs 3:9 On the first day of every week let each one of you put aside and save, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come. ~1 Corinthians 16:2 On the subject of giving, Oswald Sanders wrote, “… God estimates our gifts not so much by their financial value, as by the sacrifice involved, the love that accompanies it, and the amount that is left.” So the attitude of giving is as important as the act of giving. For it ref lects the condition of the heart. Billy Graham once said, “Give me five minutes with a person’s checkbook, and I will tell you where their heart is.” What would an honest evaluation of our spending habits reveal about where our hearts reside? Were Reverend Graham to examine my own family’s checkbook these days, I fear he’d notice the countless payments directed to The University of Texas and quickly deduce that our hearts must lie in Austin, where our son is currently attending college! But, in all seriousness, I hope that a closer examination would reveal a family striving to honor the Lord and advance His great purposes, not only in the manner they live but also in the manner they give. And so… in worship and in gratitude, to glorify God, to give back to God what is already His, and in obedience to our calling… we give. I dare us to do it again…
Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. ~2 Corinthians 9:6-8

The story is told of a wealthy businessman, asked to give his testimony at a church revival one Sunday morning. He described a time years earlier when, while extremely down on his luck, he attended a Christmas Eve service in his hometown. He listened as the preacher reminded those present that God cared enough to give His “all” for us… in the form of Christ Jesus. This statement resonated with the businessman, and so he decided to give his “all” to the Lord when the offering plate was passed. He literally gave everything he had - five dollars and soon his luck began to change. He went on to prosper in business and ultimately became a multimillionaire.
Dear Christ Church family and friends,
Throughout the month of October, we will be discovering what it means to be generous. The world is interested in the size of the gift or the necessity of the cause, but Jesus measured generosity by a radically different standard: the condition of the giver’s heart. So, a truly generous giver is, first of all, a person who has been reconciled to God through faith in Christ. Such people are characterized by several particular attitudes and behaviors. • First, generous givers experience the joy of giving. When they give, it does not feel like a burden but a pleasure. • Second, generous givers live and give with an eternal perspective. They are unconcerned with what they own in this life because their attention is on the age that is to come. Generous givers recognize that God owns everything. They do not cling to possessions because they do not believe they truly own them. • Third, generous givers offer gifts as an act of worship. Their driving motivation is neither self-concern nor love for others, but love for God. The most important truth in their lives is God’s saving love in Christ, and they give in order to thank and to honor God.

How is your heart condition of generosity? I invite you to attend worship every Sunday in October and expect God to inspire us through His word and move us toward greater generosity in 2013. The ‘staircase’ above is rather revealing about the giving patterns of Christ Church. I encourage everyone to find your current weekly giving range and prayerfully prepare your heart to accept the challenge to step up with us in 2013. Commitment Sunday is October 28. We will have an opportunity in each worship service to express our gratitude to God by submitting our Estimate of Generous Giving cards. Watch for more details in the days ahead.

SENIOR PASTOR
UNITED METHODIST MOMENT
Old Jeffrey, a Ghost Tale BY REV. LINDA SUMMERS PIERCE EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATE PASTOR
In 1696, John Wesley’s parents, Samuel and Susanna, moved their family into the Epworth Rectory (parsonage). Samuel had been appointed the Rector there by the king when he was thirty-three and Susanna was only twentyseven. They would spend the next thirty-eight years there, continuing their ministries and raising their children.
On three separate occasions, fire destroyed Epworth. The most infamous of these fires occurred in 1709, when a very young John Wesley, who had been trapped in an upstairs room, was saved by a human ladder. It was after this rescue his father gave him the name, “a brand plucked out of the burning.”
A lesser-known story of Epworth concerns Old Jeffrey, the ghost who supposedly inhabited an upstairs room. John Wesley had already gone away to school by the time Old Jeffrey began making himself known, so with every letter home, he always asked about the ghost and insisted everyone send him a report. He claimed he wanted to understand the story better. Whenever he got news of Old Jeffrey he published it in a magazine he had founded.
The Wesley girls were the ones who named the ghost Old Jeffrey, and they considered the name quite affectionate. While eyewitness accounts differed widely, adding to the suspense, one Wesley daughter said he looked like a rabbit, while two others claimed he appeared to be a man in a long nightshirt. Susanna reportedly saw Old Jeffrey, too, describing the apparition as something like a badger with no discernible head. Samuel repeatedly asked about the ghost’s political preferences, but there’s no indication those were ever revealed. Nevertheless, Samuel had observed that when he said prayers for the king, Old Jeffrey’s knocking would begin and get louder and louder until Samuel felt his voice could not be heard at all.
Old Jeffrey made his presence known in other ways. Doors would open and close. The sound of money falling onto the floor or breaking glass could be heard. From time to time, weird moaning noises flowed down the stairwell. The Wesley girls and the rest of the family stayed out of Old Jeffrey’s room which was furnished with a chair, a small side table, and what looked like a pile of books that had apparently been left there before the Wesleys moved in. Though it was said Susanna believed in the ghost’s existence, she was never shaken by it, and was never fearful for herself or anyone else in the family.
In January of 1716, one of the girls wrote her brother this description: “The first night I ever heard it, my sister Nancy and I were set in the dining room. We heard something rush on the outside of the doors that opened into the garden; then three loud knocks, immediately after another three, and in half a minute the same number over our heads. We inquired whether anybody had been in the garden, or in the room above us; but there was nobody. Soon after my sister Molly and I were up after all the family were abed, except my sister Nancy, about some business. We heard three bouncing thumps under our feet, which soon made us throw away our work, and tumble into bed. Afterwards, the tingling of the latch and warming pan, and so it took its leave that night. . . .It is now pretty quiet. . . .”
One day, Old Jeffrey disappeared and the noises ceased, never to return. Perhaps the ghost knew it was time to move on. Perhaps there was no longer a need for Old Jeffrey’s presence. In any case, the Wesley household was at peace and Old Jeffrey was never spoken of again.
Happy All Hallow’s Eve!

Please note that there will be NO 412 Encounter the evening of October 10 due to Fields of Faith. Hope to see you there! “LIVING RIGHT”
“I must be living right!” You’ve probably spoken those words in the midst of a very good day. What does it mean to “live right”? Peter lays it out for us: “As servants of God, live as free people... Honor everyone... “ (1 Peter 2:16-17 NRSV). Those who are involved in Stephen Ministry, our congregation’s one-to-one caregiving ministry, do just that. They serve God and respect others by providing Christian care. Is this the way you want to serve the Lord? If so, contact Sally McKnight at 713.306.1719 or Judy Edmondson at 281.701.3640 for more information on what Stephen Ministers do, and on the required training. Please email jan@cumcsl.org to let her know you plan to join this group. Just bring paper and pencil and your mind full of stories.

Education is like a passport to a better quality of life. A GED serves as that passport for many. But due to state budget cuts, GED classes were eliminated for the inmates at the Vance unit in Richmond. Hopes for a better life through education evaporated. However, through faithful, loving volunteers, we hope to RESTORE their hope, as part of Christ Church’s Restorative Justice Ministry. Can you volunteer two mornings, or two afternoons a week? GED classes run from 8:30 am to 10:30 am and from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. All levels of reading, language arts (writing), and math are needed, with a huge need for high school math. Visit www.southwestdistrict.org to learn more or to register. Bruce Mills says: “…lay school will help you handle what life throws at you…” He goes on to tell the story of being present when a friend’s daughter was dying. He led the family in prayer and supported them through this difficult time. He explains “…lay school equips us to be Christ’s representatives, which Jesus calls us to be. I give glory to God for letting me be His representative to a hurting family.”

Did you know that Christ Church will be a “temporary home” to some families beginning the week of Sunday, October 14, as we host Family Promise? Over 50 volunteers logging in more than 300 hours are required each host week. There is a place for all to serve: providing supplies, serving as an Overnight Host, helping transform rooms into bedrooms, preparing a simple kid-friendly meal, washing linens, serving as a Dinner Host, and so much more. SHARE YOUR JOYS AND CONCERNS WITH US Your pastoral staff and leaders of Christ Church’s Member Care Ministries want to share in your joys and concerns. You might not know this, but hospitals do not contact churches – even when you give them your church name, address, and contact information. Part of this is due to HIPPA laws. So whether you’re about to enter the hospital or you’re celebrating the birth of a baby, please call Sandy White in the church office at 281.980.6888. She will forward your message to the pastors and appropriate member care ministry leaders.
