...got to witness how God was incredibly faithful to families experiencing homelessness, who had no idea what they were going to do; except that they were committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and He closed the door on their homelessness by providing food and shelter. Vera J. ...was able to give a meal and a warm welcome to a homeless family right here in church. - an anonymous member ...was able to serve on the Youth Mission and see the hearts of many enlightened with the love of Christ. Return with me back to the SERVE Campaign and remember the final scene that we saw in our video series. We watched Jesus walk through each of these halls and into our Sanctuary. I can still remember the chills I had as I watched his hand fall upon each pew as he walked down the center aisle. The last question he asked us was, “What’s next?” I believe this question is something that needs to penetrate our minds and our hearts as we prayerfully consider what we do here at Christ Church. So as we begin our annual stewardship campaign we want to first determine “what is next” in the life of this church. Executive staff and leaders in the church have prayerfully found two foci that answer this question. We will enter the community to build relationships and make disciples, and we will “restore God’s house” to make our church a welcoming place for the new friends we hope to make. Thanks to all of you, we have eliminated our debt and are now able to participate in this calling. It is going to be exciting to see what God has in store for our church family! This summer, we started “restoring God’s house” by transforming the stage for our casual worship service, the hub, realigning the screens and installing new lighting and a new scrim backdrop to enhance the atmosphere. These changes will benefit not only those attending the hub, but also those participating in our Sunday evening youth worship service, 412 Ministries. The trustees have also developed a five-year plan for the whole church that ranges from carpet replacement to resealing our stained glass windows. Operation “Restoring God’s House” is now becoming a reality, thanks to you! We have also designed a new vision frame that focuses on reaching out to our community and inviting people to come and worship with us. We are looking into “adopting” an apartment complex and developing a relationship with the tenants there in order to share the love of Christ with them through on-site Bible studies and worship. We are seeking out people who are called to start new HomeGroups so we can take the presence of Christ into our neighborhoods. We are contemplating new and innovative ways to take Christ out into the world and we have begun this process with live streaming of our worship services, capturing them in their entirety so that people can view them on our website at their convenience. We are helping the church at large by becoming a teaching church for summer interns, who come and learn how to do ministry by serving alongside our staff and lay volunteers. There are many exciting things happening at Christ Church, and we know you will want to be a part of this exciting adventure by supporting your church with your tithes and offerings, thus enabling us to continue to be “people helping people find fullness in Christ.” I want to thank you in advance for investing in that which is eternal and significant!

WHY STEP UP IN GENEROSITY IN 2014? Christ United Methodist Church is being challenged to take a step up in generosity in 2014. We are asking for additional giving of 1% of income per household, as we are able and led by God. Why? It’s not to pay more of the church expenses, or because “good” people give, or because we may feel guilty if we don’t. We give as a positive response to Jesus’ command to “follow Me.” His teachings on giving clearly show that our money is an extension of who we are and what we value in life. Our giving ref lects the meaning Christ has in our lives. Generosity is a tangible expression of our gratitude for God and His infinite love and gifts to us. When we give in support of the local church, we become active partners in His ministries throughout the world. 1 Our giving not only helps others; it helps us. As we step up in generosity, we are spiritually enriched. We grow in faith as maturing disciples of Jesus Christ, living more fully in the abundant life He 4 desires for us and experiencing incredible joy as His ambassadors. 9

• Generous givers experience the joy of giving. 39

• Generous givers live and give with an eternal perspective. 29

We ask you to step out in faith; prayerfully and carefully consider your 2014 estimate of giving commitment. If you are not currently giving, consider taking a step up to regular weekly giving. If you are not tithing, consider taking a step in the right direction and increasing your giving by an additional 1% of your household income. Together, we can Step Up in Generosity in 2014.

THANK YOU I just had to write you a note and say how incredibly impressed I was with the Vacation Bible School! What a creative, well-organized, fun and inspiring program! This was my son’s first year to attend VBS at Christ Church and he is already counting down the days until next year’s! He literally jumped for joy each morning when it was time to go. From the moment we walked in and saw the decorated doors (so much work for just 5 days of camp- more effort than most preschools put forth), the giant castle, the sea of purple t-shirts, we were blown away. We have been listening to the CD (I woke up with “Soon and very soon” in my head this morning), having God sightings, and I swear my son’s behavior has even been better. My son has helped me remember to send my problems to God in bubbles. It has rejuvenated his faith- he says now he wants to work as a youth leader at a church when he grows up! We were not members at Christ Church, but plan to start attending services now. I enjoyed reading a newsletter every day- again, I wish the schools would do that. The ceremony where we learned all that had been done during the week was spectacular! I was very moved. Thank you to you and the hundreds of volunteers who worked so hard in such a smoothly coordinated way to pull off an amazing VBS! God bless you all, Sara

ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6 • TRADITIONAL WORSHIP SERVICES, SANCTUARY

World Communion Sunday is observed on the first Sunday of October each year, and is a celebration that gives local churches the opportunity to come to the Lord’s Table with a special awareness of their brothers and sisters in Christian churches in other countries and cultures. In our Christ Church traditional worship services, global music will be sung. You’re invited to wear ethnic dress, especially the dress of your country of origin, and join in this special recognition of the unity in Christ’s Body, the Church. OCTOBER HEALING PRAYER WORSHIP SERVICE TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8 • 7 PM • SANCTUARY

Medical research has shown that faith in God significantly affects the healing process. Believing in a God who cares deeply and personally for us helps us confront all the “dis-ease” that comes with life. Join with others seeking a deeper relationship with God, celebrate Communion and let the healing power of prayer restore you. NEW ACOLYTE TRAINING SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13 • 12:15 PM • VOLUNTEER CENTER AND SANCTUARY

If you are in the 3rd to 8th grade and would like to serve on the Sunday morning worship team as an Acolyte, please plan to come to the Volunteer Center immediately after the 11:05 am Sanctuary service on October 13. After enjoying a pizza lunch (and some cookies), you’ll learn about what acolytes do, then “practice, practice, practice” in the Sanctuary. For more information, call Acolyte Coordinator, Judy Hicks, at 281.980.8727. Hope to see you there!

412 Youth Sunday is coming! Join us as our students help lead worship and show their talents for the Lord.

On Sunday, November 3, those members of our church family who have gone on to the Church Triumphant will be remembered in morning worship by the reading of their names and the tolling of a bell. During this important “family” observance, the church comes together to celebrate the entry of these loved ones into God’s eternal presence, and to acknowledge that each one’s loss is felt by the entire Body of Christ. After morning worship, new memorial pavers will be consecrated in a special separate service held outside around 12:30 pm in the paver courtyard. For a full listing of activities and ways you can get involved at Christ Church, please visit WWW.CUMCSL.ORG

There are usually over 300 volunteer hours involved in creating a successful Family Promise rotation. Help serve behind the scenes by providing supplies, setting up and breaking down church rooms used, doing laundry, and providing meals. Other service opportunities include being a Dinner Host, staying overnight at the church, and staffing the Family Center at New Hope Lutheran Church during the rotation’s second weekend. If any of these opportunities sound like something you can do, contact Kira Halcarz at kira.halcarz@gmail.com or 832.654.9356.
