Property Profile Laleham Abbey was built in the Palladian style by renowned architect John Buanarotti Papworth between 1803-6, for the 2nd Earl of Lucan. Approached through a Greek Doric porch into an entrance vestibule graced by four marble pillars with Ionic capitals opening into a magnificent entrance hall with its central fireplace crowned by five sections of the Thorwaldsen plaster frieze depicting ‘The Triumphant Entry of Alexander the Great into Babylon’ and a stunning cantilever staircase winds around and is lit by a glazed cupola. The building was named Laleham House, until it was bought by an order of Anglican nuns in 1932, when it was re-named Laleham Abbey. The house has a fascinating history having been an officer’s hospital, school and convent and is one of the most notable buildings within the area. It was purchased in 1981 by Barratt Homes, who undertook an extensive restoration and converted it into exclusive luxury apartments. The principal apartment, Colonnade, gained its name from the row of impressive architectural pillars ‘Colonnades’ to the rear of the apartment, that lead onto a private ¼ acre south facing garden inset with a heated outdoor pool. Colonnade is set on the ground floor extending to approximately 4000 ft2. The entrance to the apartment leads off the impressive communal reception hall into an entrance lobby with two deep cupboards, one with plumbing for laundry appliances. Two of the former grand reception rooms now form the apartment’s splendid drawing and dining rooms, which retain their high cornice ceilings and French doors that open onto the colonnaded terrace. The dining room forms the hub of the home with lovely southerly views over the garden and a pair of marble pillars framing the doorway to the bedrooms. To one side is the kitchen that has a range of hand made units with granite work surfaces and a range of integrated appliances. A staircase to the side leads to a galleried study area over the kitchen. A pair of original mahogany doors open into the elegant double aspect drawing room that approaches 36’ x 24’, retaining its fireplace and three sets of French doors onto the terrace. A central corridor gives access to three double bedrooms and the family bathroom. The master bedroom is a beautiful room with doors onto the terrace and an en-suite bathroom. Below the apartment and accessed via a staircase from the communal entrance vestibule is a private media/ family room and cellar. The cellar has power, light, water, and drainage and contains a separate wine cellar. A pressurised hot water system serves the apartment and the gas-fired boiler provides for both the apartment’s central heating and heating the swimming pool.
