Welcome To The Story Of Eyot House Eyot House on D’Oyly Carte Island was conceived on a summer’s day when Richard D’Oyly Carte, opera impresario, hotelier, owner of the Savoy Hotel, and manager of the Savoy Opera Company was on a paddle steamer trip down the Thames. He noticed a rough island, and decided it would be the perfect location for a country annexe to The Savoy Hotel. He bought the island, strengthened it, increased its size, and with a flourish of irony reshaped it to resemble the liner Queen Mary. He then built Eyot House at its centre. Variously described as being in the style of a Swiss chalet, or resembling a ginger bread house with colonial overtones, the house is unquestionably a magnificent example of the architecture of its day. D’Oyly Carte’s flamboyance and individuality is evident at every turn: carvings of crocodiles and gargoyles appear in the eaves; a wooden veranda surrounds the building on three sides, and at ground and first floor level.
Its unique setting and distinctive style has attracted much interest over the years and it has featured in TV programmes, ads, and films including the TV series Primeval, Lynda la Plante’s Trial & Retribution, and the film drama Witness Against Hitler.
On its completion, D’Oyly Carte’s plan for a country annexe to the Savoy was thwarted as he failed to secure a liquor licence. Instead the 1.9 acre island and the then 7 bedroom house became his own private residence to which he invited his friends, and many musical personalities of the time. Gilbert and Sullivan were frequent visitors, as was the Savoy Opera Company who spent their time rehearsing in the house and grounds. Local Weybridge residents enjoyed these impromptu (and free) performances from the banks of the mainland.
