Information Architecture – Recommended Structural Path & Categorical Groupings

Page 1

Information Architecture/Structure Recommended Structural Pattern: Breadth vs. Depth Approach Structural Presentation: Establish a visual hierarchy that guides the user through the content. In the new design, we propose a breadth over depth approach for our organization scheme. • •

Favoring a broad and shallow implementation over a deep and narrow approach. This helps users identify where they are within the site hierarchy along with managing documents and screen real estate.

The broad and shallow example takes two clicks to access the desired page.

The deep and narrow example takes six clicks to access the desired page.

Information Architecture/Navigation Recommended Navigation Design: Persistent Global/Browse Navigation Hybrid User Interaction: Support user exploration and manipulation of data. Organize content or tasks the way users think and do their work. In the new design, we propose a persistent global/browse approach for our navigation scheme. • •

Global navigation appears on every screen usually in the header and footer, providing application-wide access to universal content or functions. Browse navigation encourages exploration based on categorical organization and complements global navigation.

Augmenting Navigation: • •

Breadcrumbs: Breadcrumbs show where you are in the site hierarchy and provide a way to go back up the hierarchy. Rollovers/Cascading Menus: When a user hovers over a high-level item, its corresponding sub-categories are displayed in a frame beside/below the item. Clicking on a second level item opens up the corresponding page.

Organizer: Persistent Navigation Area for global navigation A selection in the global navigation changes browse navigation contents

Organizer: Browse Navigation List menu Area for finding documents

Workspace: Document display area A selection in list menu changes workspace contents

Information Architecture/ Categorical Recommended Categorical Groupings: Category/Topic vs. Audience Categorical Navigation: Provide clear and consistent navigation structure with strong contextual clues. In the new design we propose a category/topic grouping of content over an audience grouping. • •

Categorizing information by topic allows us to group and elevate frequently accessed content in a fashion that users can quickly identify and feel confident when choosing a navigational path, thus improving task performance. Grouping content by audience would scatter content across the site in various locations which can lead to a bad user experience.

Page Types Home Page Design Recommended Design Pattern: Company/Organization Home Page Structural Presentation: A good home page is a successful balance between user needs and company goals. In the new design, we propose a home page design that conveys the following. • • • •

Purpose & Value - Orient users to the value of the site’s offerings. Branding – Portrays the company’s brand, enhanced perceived quality and trust. Clear Navigation – Provide a clear path to the content users are looking for. Surfacing Information – Promote critical and frequently used information that users are seeking and content you want to feature

The following page elements include: • • • • • • • • • • •

Header Global Navigation/Corporate Organization Information Search Branding Logo Tag line Primary Site Navigation/Cascading Menus Breadcrumbs Spotlights Quick Links News & Media Footer

Home Page Definition: A modular design that emphasizes the site's top high-priority tasks. Elements Include: Branding window & text, dynamic spotlights, quick links, news & media, and flexible modules for navigation

Overview Page A: A three column design that emphasizes the content groupings top high priority tasks. Elements Include: Left side navigation, general overview, spotlight, quick links, how do I’s and flexible modules for navigation Overview Page B: A full page design that allows us to present large amounts of content groupings with brief overview statements. A gallery page of sort. Example: Self-help and Programs. Elements Include: Clusters of contextual links and overview statements, visual clues and flexible modules. Landing Page: A three column design that presents information that is relevant to the visitor. The landing page provides content that is a logical extension of the advertisement or link. Elements Include: Left side navigation, targeted overview, spotlight, content, related links and flexible modules for additional resources.

Page Design Elements Recommended Page Elements: A subset or portion of a page type optimized to perform a specific task.

Breadcrumbs: An effective use of breadcrumbs will show you where you are in the site hierarchy and provide a way to go back up the hierarchy. • • •

They make site learning and navigation more efficient They reduce the user’s “where-am-I?” memory burden by providing a list of recently visited pages They make it easier to cross levels of the navigation decision tree within the browser environment

Quick links: A list of frequently used shortcuts that provides access to other web pages that otherwise could not be reached in one or two clicks using the navigation structure available on the page. Typically for deep content areas, usually found on the home page and overview pages. • • • •

Each page may have a unique set of quick links appropriate to the needs of typical users of that page Should take the user to targeted content (web page or document) Should be kept short as possible in order to maximize functional value. Should be placed prominently on the page so the user has easy access

How Do I's and FAQ's: For deep content areas where applicable • •

Ideally HDI's and FAQ's should direct a user to a FAQ page with anchored links. Not sure that we would want to mix and mach QL and FAQ's - Different expectations.
