Interior Ad Agency McWill Advertising is an interiors project refurbishing the top two floors of a LEED Gold building in downtown Portland, OR. At 5000sf per floor the space was designed to expose the bones of the structure and emphasize the layering of materials by using repeated dimensions and geometry. As a result, these layers create a balanced variety of workspaces from collaboration lounges to private offices and a small cafe.

By allowing portions of the floor to remain open between levels, the two floors ultimately become one workspace. Shared elements such as light, air, and sound help facilitate a casual and comfortable office that feeds a constant stream of creative ideas.

The conceptual parti shown below alludes to the exterior of the building and its form. The unique intersecting architecture of the skin hints at the use of a more rigid design that might be borrowed for the interior space to create a fluid experience for the employees of McWill Advertising.

Moving the Capital city from Lagos to Abuja is just one step towards rebuilding the nation. As the capitol, the responsibility of the host is to put everyone under the same umbrella, while bridging differences, and fertilizing common grounds. The International Hub accomplishes this with large sweeping roofs that house all the necessities of an international conference center in addition to rich public space including cafes and futbol pitches. Differences are thrown aside and the playing field is leveled by opportunity and interests for all; a hybridized venue that will catalzye relationships and form the root system of a new community.

Lyceum Competition Prof. Erin Moore

Zuma Rock, seen in the rendering below, and Aso Rock are two major geographic landmarks in Abuja that helped influence both the conceptual development of the IHCC and the desired prominence within the cityscape. These landmarks, much like the IHCC are everybody's and nobody's at the same time.

Cubehouse This project reflects the outcome of dimensional and programatic constraints. A 30' x 30' x 30' cube offers a woodland retreat suitable for family and friends looking to escape city life. In plan, the space shows the public and private rooms expressed both internally and externally on every floor. Avid bird watchers, deep readers, and curious culinaries have suitable space with excellent exposure to their surroundings.

Groundfloor

Expressing a love of the outdoors, the conceptual partis represent the client's desire to open multiple avenues of sunlight, fresh air, and natural elements. The surrounding Douglas Fir forest and application of wood in construction and interiors helps create a seamless transition as one moves in, out and around the house.

These same desires lead to not only connecting the internal space to the environment, but also to a connection between floors in order to waft their musical and culinary passions.

As part of the visiting artists' residences, a rooftop meditation garden offers a direct connection to their living quarters and a solemn area away from the public eye. The separated roofgarden is only accessible to the scholars and lends itself to both individual thought and group collaboration.

Residing at the northern terminus of the North Park Blocks in downtown Portland, OR, the venue is a laboratory and showcase for the cross pollination of ideas between the visiting artists and the Portland community.

The intersecting polygons evident in plan view are speaking to the shift in the streetgrid as one progresses from South to North due to the bending of the Willamette River. As a result the upper levels offer stunning views of Mt. Hood and the park blocks stretching South.

Oregon Sustainability Center The OSC is an endeavor taken up to create an exemplary building that fulfills the requirements of 'The Living Building Challenge.' The site lies in the heart of Portland, OR, on the edge of Portland State University, forming a nexus for education, research, & urban life. The result is a blend of contextual inspiration combined with the potential of adaptive technology.

After pursuing various strategies for building performace including material studies, solar exposure, internal heat gain & more, our dialogue led to a modular approach.. It provides a repeating pattern, with removable panels, that changes aesthetic and function by flipping its orientation. This allows the building to adapt over time and free itself from the restrictions of technological turnover such as the efficiency of solar cells. At the same time, the project proves more feasible to developers with financial restrictions, yet a desire to embrace and explore building strategies.

HarvesterPack: a biomimetic approach to personal energy management In a world in which consumers spend an increasing amount of time on the go, mobile devices have come to dominate the tech-space. While batteries have improved, there is still a huge reliance on wall outlets, yet the technology exists to completely unplug from the wall; allowing us to produce, store, and manage our personal energy use. By exploring and understanding how nature manages energy, we developed a concept-pack that harnesses the latent energy in our everyday lives. Managing that power in terms of allocating it to devices most in need while also providing optimal functioning environments for the devices and the user.

While investigating how nature manages energy we looked at trophic levels and caloric energy, thermal energy regulation, and electrical energy. What we found is that nature, and biology has many proven ways of regulating various forms of energy. After looking deep into the biology of a number of different species, patterns emerged from our research that we could abstract and apply to our design concept.

Electrical Schematic Diagram

The Electrical schematic diagram depicts the four latent energy sources and energy flow options to and from the 'PowerShare' core and the user's devices. Toggling the switches in the settings for the 'app' allows users to select which devices receive a charge. For example, a user can direct the charge in their laptop computer to their phone or their tablet to their camera. Available charges can be used where they are most needed.

Skooldesk Reform Operating under the design prompt "Objects of Nostalgia", I gravitated toward my youth and found the schoolyard. It was play, it was freedom, it was competitive. The current state of education is fragile and dependent upon unstable support. Using minimal glue and no metal attachments, the Skooldesk Reform holds steady under its own weight. Tusk tenons, friction, and gravity play the leading roles while blank slates offer space for new ideas.

The process for creating the design had a strong focus on the research and development of educational furniture, Japanese woodworking, an understanding of tools, and keen observation of the current sociocultural status of public education.
