CHAIRMAN’S REPORT A big thank you to those who took the time to feedback comments on the previous racing season and we’re happy to announce that things are fairly well in place for Season 2012/13. As you decide on your boat or personal commitment to the coming program we would like to ask that you also consider Jess in the office and ensure that all documentation required has been filed. Last season there were a number of occasions when sail numbers on spinnakers conflicted with those on Jibs/Mainsails. When four or five boats are running down to converge on the finish line within inches, the task of getting the right boats in the correct order is made extremely difficult when these numbers are incorrect. REX acknowledges this and has given an undertaking to our Race Officers to ensure we raise awareness and monitor the situation closely for the coming season. It was good to see that some of our boats made the trip around the river to the very welcoming Port Adelaide Sailing Club for the recent Port Line Cup. It was also wonderful to welcome some of our southern sailing fraternity brothers to the CYCSA over that weekend and thanks to Mike O’Reilly, all reports are that the Goolwa group once again enjoyed their annual pilgrimage North to race and socialise over the Port Line cup weekend. Thank you also to William Strangways and Jess Hargreaves who have shouldered much of the burden of producing our next season Sailing Instructions. Mark Hutton has also provided valuable assistance and I think that most of the Committee will breathe a sigh of relief that we can tick another long annual task off the list once again. REX believes that it has produced a program with something to suit most boats. Pure logistics or anticipated lack of fleet numbers did see some suggestions over-ruled but in the main most of the wishes of the many have been taken into account. On the conclusion of our Winter Series I’d like to thank everyone who made the time to participate. The fleets may be smaller but there is without doubt a true spirit of camaraderie prevalent in our Short-handed and Winter Series fleets. I look forward to seeing you at the club as we shake off the winter blues and prepare to get back out in the sun and on the water.

NEWS FROM THE RACE OFFICE
It has been pretty quiet around the Race Office over the past few weeks, and I am starting to look forward to the action packed 2012-13 Season. We have all of our usual Regattas planned, plus this season the CYCSA will be hosting the Adelaide - Lincoln Yacht Race on the 15 Feb 2013 (the briefing will be held on Thurs 14 Feb, and the Lincoln Week Regatta runs from the 18-21 Feb 2013). We will also be hosting this season’s Vicsail Beneteau Regatta (24 March 2013). Not long to go now before it all starts happening! In the meantime, I have been taking advantage of the break between series by updating all of the racing documentation for the coming season. By now you should be aware that the Sailing Instructions for Season 2012-13, Notice of Race for Season 2012-13 has been released, as has the SA IRC State Championship Notice of Race for both Division 1 and Division 2. 2012-2013 Program: I urge you all to spend some time looking over the final draft of the program (which can be found here) before you begin the nomination process. We have introduced a couple of new series this season: the Short-handed Summer Series which will be run in conjunction with the Coaster series (separate start, 5 minutes later), & the Short Offshore Series, which is aimed at those boats who would like to do more offshore races, but are not interested in the really long ones. We are also offering the Inshore/Offshore Series again this season. This series did not get enough entries to go ahead last year which was a real shame. The Inshore/Offshore is a mix of Coaster races and Short Offshore races, plus the Adelaide - Lincoln Offshore. Online Nominations: Nominations for Season 2012-13 are now open! Nominations are once again available online this season, and the format is user friendly. If you have any issues with the nomination process, please contact me. Racing Association Sponsorship: Yes, it is a never ending job looking for sponsors for the Racing Association and I am still putting my feelers out to the members of the Racing Community! RYA Day Skipper Theory The CYCSA Marine Academy is a RYA/ YA Shore based Training Centre. Our Day Skipper Theory has been broken into 2 manageable parts. The course is conducted in the Kinnaird Room from 7pm till 10pm on weeknights. To complete Day Skipper theory you will need to do both "Navigation" and "Seamanship and Safety". All courses include Day Skipper theory packs and Almanac. Following this you will be required to attend an Update Course. A one day refresher for people who are less than 12 months expired and have logged 2500 nm in cat 1-3 races. SAIL NUMBERS Sailing Instruction 10: SAIL NUMBERS / ALTERATION TO BOATS 10.1: Mainsails, headsails and spinnakers shall carry the same sail numbers in accordance with rule 77. This Sailing Instruction is the warning and opportunity to correct in accordance with rule G4. 10.2: A boat shall notify the Race Office when a sail number does not match the registered sail number on the entry form. Failure to do so may result in being scored DNC.
The Racing Executive is giving notice to all skippers who have advised the Race Office of a change of sail number to their boat this season. We expect all boats to start the 2012/13 season with the correct sail numbers. This has been mentioned previously in ’DOWNWIND’ and email correspondence from the Race Office. It becomes confusing for our volunteers on the Committee Boats when recording finish times, as well as for the Race Office when processing results when this rule is not abided by. We had another successful Short-handed Series this season, including the introduction of the Port Vincent Destination Race, as reported on in the July edition of Downwind. The Destination Race was so successful that we have already locked it into the program for Season 2012-13 (pop the dates into your diary now - 6 & 7 July 2013). The Short-handed Series is a great social series, with all competitors catching up for a chat over drinks and a BBQ after each race (thanks to our sponsors, Doyles Sailmakers for the drinks, and Canegrass Saltbush Lamb for the BBQ). To our 2012 Fleet: G-Wizz, Take 5, Stockcar, Carioca, Silver Cloud, School’s Out, Outrageous, and Taurus; and our Race Committee out there every week on CYC2: John Gibson, Ron Yeates and George Ottewell, thanks for a great season! If you are interested in Short-handed Sailing, keep your eye out for the introduction of the Short-handed Summer Series in the 2012-13 Racing Program!

PORT LINE CUP
The 2012 Port Line Cup weekend began with the (aptly-named) IceBreaker series on the Saturday. It was good to see the CYCSA represented by five boats and Doug Watson’s Jumping Jack Flash posting a commendable second place following the two shakedown races. While Rapid 1, Good Company, Foxtrot and the Ghost Of Christmas Past were further away from the podium I think all would agree that it was a perfect opportunity to get things back into working order. The big day was a grey and slightly chilly Sunday. Sixteen CYCSA boats joined the fleet, helping to swell overall numbers to a total of 56 for the Regatta. It was a day which threw down a bit of everything, small squalls, heavy rain, a glimmer of sunshine and wind from the wrong direction. Not a great day for the big boats, but ideal for smaller/sports boats. Predominantly a reaching race, some brave crews attempted to run shy kites but the majority reserved theirs for the West-East arm of the river only. A massive barbecue afterwards saw all crews gather under the verandah at the extremely hospitable Port Adelaide Sailing Club. When the numbers were crunched less than nine minutes separated the top 42 boats but results posted on the day were subject to a Protest hearing .
Congratulations to Alan Beswick’s “Bolistik” (PASC) who came top of the table. Even a bingle on the course didn’t deter “Musetta” (RSAYS) from posting a commendable second and “Rouseabout”(PASC), the overall winner of the previous day’s IceBreaker races, took third place. Flying the flag for the CYC, best performing boats on the day were Foxtrot in 6th place, Dr Feelgood and Another Planet who tied for 8th place and Rapid 1 in 10th place.

The 2012 Audi Hamilton Island Race week was held at a sunny Hamilton Island over the 17-25 August 2012. Three CYCSA boats made the trek up north for the Regatta - Nellie Myra, Another Planet (as ‘Rhythm and Blues’), and Flying Circus (as ‘Out of the Blue’).
The Adventures of Flying Circus (‘Out of the Blue’) - Steve Power..... This year it would be different. The previous four years we had chartered a boat through Sunsail right on the Marina at Hamilton Island. We (6 guys) had lived on the boat for the race week in what could be described as organised chaos. Bunking with your mate for a night in a stern bunk is somewhat cosy, but after a few nights and a few rums, who cares. But this year it was different. In an effort to cut costs we decided to break from Sunsail and rent a yacht from Whitsunday Renta Yacht. We hired a Bavaria 39 Cruiser. 5 Years old and in pretty good nick. We flew into Proserpine via Brisbane, made our way to Airlie Beach and rented a 6 bed dorm at the backpackers lodge right on the sea front. At $27 each a night it was a bargain. It was the final night of Airlie Beach Race Week and festivities were flowing, so after a counter meal at the Yacht Club we ventured out to the foreshore lawns where we found a young singer strutting her stuff on stage and Mt Gay Rum’n’cokes for $5....Another bargain! As the evening started to close around midnight we wandered down the main street and found a pub open where we downed a few beers and were invited to the main back room to witness the final of a girl’s jelly wrestling competition (in bathers). The first of late nights! Next morning we were up early as Steve and I had the yacht briefing at Shute Harbour, while the other guys went shopping for food and drinks. By midday we were away, sailing toward Hamilton Island. Unfortunately the wind had dropped to 5 knots and the tide about 4 knots, so down with the sails and on with the noisy beast - oh, and out with the beers! How novel, the Bavaria had a fridge under the seat right in the cockpit. Woo hoo, WRAY had given us race packs that included towels, hats, sunscreen and a carton of very cold crownies. On we went. Hamilton Island came up quickly after about 2 hours motoring. We called up the marina on the radio and they met us in a rubber ducky and they showed us our berth (included as part of the race fee). We quickly tied up and went to the Race Office at the Yacht Club and registered. We were given hull numbers and a few freebies—Robert Oatley red and white wine! Because we had hired a cheaper yacht, it allowed some of us to rent a house overlooking Dent Passage, and as the girls were coming up later in the week we needed to make sure they were comfortable. The house was fantastic 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, big front patio, BBQ and full kitchen. It also came with a 4 person golf buggy! The entertainment at night has always been a highlight at Hamilton Island and my crew certainly had a great time mingling with fellow sailors and tourists whilst John Swan backed out some hits with Angry Anderson and some old rockers I recognized but didn’t remember their names. AC/DC music filled the air as we slipped into Hamo mode.

DOWNWIND The Adventures of Flying Circus (‘Out of the Blue’) - Steve Power.....Con’t The racing started next day a 9am. It was an easterly course start down to Lindeman Island and back but unfortunately the course was changed, the wind disappeared and the tide was, as usual, big. So we didn’t finish! So what, we’re at Hammo in a cruising boat, In 26 degrees and guess what?.............It’s raining and cold in Adelaide! Race 2, 3 and 4 we finished, but way back in light conditions. By now our HCP was humongous! We could not get the old girl to go...Maybe it was us? Who cares, we were at Hammo. Lay day was here, and the Hammo Pool Party with band, Olympic sailors, food, hot models and plenty of run was happening. The girls had arrived a few days earlier and were loving the sunshine and party atmosphere. We had cocktails (margaritas by the pool) and $10 curries on the go. The party started around midday and went to late in the evening. Race 5 we went a bit better and as the wind increased, so the old girl started to lift up her skirt and jiggle. By Race 6 our HCP was a figure I’d never seen before and we hooted around the islands to win on corrected time easily. Each of the guys takes a full race steering and Jack steered to win in race 6. It was his first time as skipper - he now has a 1st place trophy from Hammo. Race 7 Steve and I shared the skippering. The race from Dent passage up and around North Molle Island and back. We were engulfed in heavy fog. It was an eerie sight watching boats come out oF the mist and glide by under spinnaker. At the top of North Molle, Wild Oats XI flew past with Blackjack chasing her. The wind picked up, beating home and we cracked the ol’ girl up and she went ok. We crossed the line after about 6 hours at sea and finished 2nd on corrected time. A couple of NZ yachties got a bit cranky and said we were ‘tanking’....Haha, who cares - We were at Hammo! And it’s not all about the racing. JACK ON THE HELM
Hammo has a sail past and dress, and the crew try and win the ‘Grand Prix D’Elegance’ Trophy. Now, I should mention that we were the holders from the pervious year. Our bright yellow florescent Mankinis (ala Borat) won us the pewter trophy and made Rob Mundle admit on radio that is was ‘ugly, but unbeatable!’ So this year we tried to do the unthinkable and win 2 years straight. Unfortunately, our 1960’s Batman and Robin fight scene on the boat wasn’t good enough and another boat took the trophy. Good luck to them - was just another day in Hammo....! We travelled home in shorts and t-shirts and landed at Adelaide airport at 10.45pm. The hostie said to us “Welcome to Adelaide, where the temperature is currently 7 degrees outside....” Wish we were still in Hammo. To anyone thinking of going to Hammo Race Week next year, just do it! If you want some info about Hammo then track me down via Jess and I’ll tell ya some stories!! OOPS! LOST THE SPINNAKER HALYARD!
.... And the Experiences from Another Planet (‘Rhythm and Blues’) - Brenton Pegler A few of the Planet Team, including Brenton & Tracey Pegler, Roger Nicolson, Doug Ransom, and Scotty & Sonia from the Squadron, visited Hamo Race Week again this year for the 5th time. It was another ideal year for tourists, with light to moderate winds and around 22 degrees. This year the whales were so abundant, I imposed a 1 carton fine for anyone mentioning a whale sighting. Our results were looking good two days in, with a good chance of taking it out, until we started getting serious, being OCS for the last two races due to huge tides, no wind and gung hoe start tactics. In spite of this we finished 8th in Div 2 with one 1st, and 4th overall in The Sunsail Series. IRC REPORT Urgent Reminder!
Time is running out to revalidate your 2012 certificate and have it back in time for the start of the 2012/13 racing season! We have delayed the weighing day to accommodate a few yachts, however ‘D-Day’ is not far off . Due to dreadful weather during August, my trip to Port Lincoln for a weighing and measuring day was postponed. We have a great racing program lined up for the summer season with 14 races for the Division 1 IRC State Championships and 10 races for the Division 2 IRC State Championships. If you need any help, please give me a call.

The volunteer duty crew from both clubs once again did a sterling job with their allocated races. Our thanks and congratulations go to the crew on CYC1, CYC2, Miss Robyn and Wilbur for their hard work and dedication over the colder months. We had a great fleet this season, with a total 33 boats in the combined series. Thanks to all who rugged up, braved the elements, and participated this year!

This season, the CYCSA Winter Series was once again supported by our long standing Racing Association Sponsors, Leica & Jim Theodore of Port River Marine. I’m sure everyone will agree that there is never a dull moment when Leica is around, and her dedication to her role as sponsor was obvious in her actions - from her inspiring speeches, to the time spent on decorating the Patio ready for the day’s presentations. Each race the lucky winners went home with a myriad of special prizes ranging from lollies to merchandise, courtesy of Leica. The Series Winners even went home with a voucher for a free slipping at Port River Marine.
