CHAIRMAN’S REPORT With Christmas and New year well and truly past us we're all getting back into the swing of the remaining spring/summer series. I joined many club members down on Kangaroo Island and witnessed my first ever Ballast Head Cup race. American River was full of yachts and it was a great week of socialising. If you have no plans for next year I do urge you all to consider joining the KI crew for New Year. Well done to Andrew and David Saies who did a sterling job of organising the race which, in spite of the weather, was a great event. Welcome back to our Inshore Series and Coaster Series entrants. Our Post-Christmas Series Two Twilighlighters have enjoyed some pearler nights on the water so far this year. Wonderful nights with near-perfect twilight racing conditions. Thank you to Yalumba, Phil Hoffman Travel and the Stag Hotel who are once again supporting this series. Jess has returned from Maternity leave and we have worked with her to organise hours which will enable her to spend time with her new son Nate as well as fulfilling the duties on hand. Please be advised that she will be in the race office on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday and is contactable during the hours via her new phone number 0418 230 431 when she is away from the desk. Congratulations to Andrew Corletto and his Shining Sea crew on their great performance at the Festival of Sails They won their division on IRC on the passage race, topped the podium for the Regatta in both IRC and AMS divisions and also took the top prize for the Beneteau Nationals. We look forward to seeing Shining Sea and her crew back at the club in the near future. Thank you to Keith Finch who has once again been invaluable to the club, firstly to supply and then later fix our air horn on CYC1 and more recently he assisted in fixing the Members' tractor. We appreciate your support. As we begin our plans for Port Lincoln I urge you all to consider safety. The onus is on the Skipper to ensure that boats conform to safety regulations and that all crew are aware of emergency procedures on each vessel. If anyone has any questions in this regard please contact Jess who can direct you to the best person to answer them. If anyone is looking for delivery crew or accommodation, again, please ask Jess. The RSAYS is the host Adelaide club for this year so please direct any inquiries regarding the RACE itself or Lincoln Week Regatta to PLYC or the RSAYS. As many of our boats will be in Port Lincoln and we have no racing scheduled Jess will take leave over this regatta period so our Race Office will be unattended.

NEWS FROM THE RACE OFFICE
Happy New Year to our Racing Members! Welcome back after the Christmas break. I hope you all had a nice relaxing time over the festive season with your family and friends. In case you haven’t run into me yet, yes I am back at ‘home’ in the Race Office! And in case you haven’t been bored silly about it yet, I had a little boy in June. His name is Nate and of course, he’s the most beautiful baby ever. Please be patient with me while I get my bearings and try to remember all of the things that were once in the forefront of my brain! The Race Office setup has altered slightly to afford me more flexibility as a working mother. Hours will be the same (Tuesday – Saturday), however I will be working from home on Thursdays and Fridays. I will be available on both phone and email as usual, but if you come into the office on these days looking for me I won’t be there. You can contact me by email, by calling the office number, or by calling the new Race Office mobile number 0418 230 431. Thank you for the warm welcome back to work. I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone over the next few weeks. Now, some housekeeping: Safety Sunday will be held on the 9th Feb from 9:30-4:00. This course will be especially helpful to those competing in the upcoming Adelaide - Lincoln Yacht race. The REX recommends anyone competing in any kind of racing to complete this course. You should be aware that the REX has released new versions of our documentation. We are now on NoR—Issue B and SI—Issue C. Both documents have been altered to include reference to our new AMS series. The SI’s have also had reference to class flags removed (division flags are retained) and section 1.7 has been added. Please take note: “Anchors must be stowed inboard: ie: no part of the anchor shall protrude beyond the sheer line” Happy Sailing until next time!

YA CARDS & NUMBERS
Racing Members: Please be reminded that Yachting South Australia will not be sending out the Gold and Silver Membership Cards this year. I am getting lots of queries about this as Lincoln fast approaches, so please take note. I have your YA numbers on file and can access them easily for you. If you would prefer to continue receiving your card, you can log on to the Yachting South Australia website and click on the MySailor link to print your own. If you have any issues with any of this, please contact me in the Race Office. ~ Jess, Racing Manager

IRC NEWS The highlight of the past month has been the arrival of Geoff Boettcher’s new Farr F400. It certainly looks like a racing machine. An IRC application has been submitted, and no doubt it will rate on the high end of the 40 footers, however I am sure that Geoff will make sure it has the performance to match the rating. The IRC State Champs races have been well supported by both division 1 and 2 entrants. ~

JUBILEE CUP OFFSHORE RACE
The forecast for the 120nm Jubilee Cup race did not sound too flash. Light and variable winds for the 12 noon start and slowly building. As it turned out we started in a light NE – NW that turned into a slight sea breeze before we reached the Wreck buoy which was the first mark of the course. Having anticipated the wind change we were able to position ourselves inside Slipknot at the first mark and were then able to sail with cracked sheets down the coast to Glenelg. Right behind Shining Sea was Slipknot followed by Vulcan and White Knight. The wind increased in pressure as we made our way south and reached the Snapper Point mark off Aldinga just before the 17:35 Sched. By that stage we had managed to open up a significant lead over the other boats with a couple of boats going through the exclusion zone around Stanvac and having to do penalty turns as a consequence. At that stage Vulcan had managed to get ahead of Slipknot who was still ahead of White Knight. Both Lucette and Kaesler had retired from the race on the way down to Glenelg. The sail across the Gulf to MacDonnell Sound was in a building breeze and with the Code Zero up we were making good speed. As we closed the MacDonnell Sound mark the breeze started to head us as forecast. By the time we got to the mark the wind was in the NW meaning a long beat up the Gulf to Long Spit. During the beat to Long Spit the breeze continued to build into the low 20s and clocked around to the NE. At Long Spit we bore away and sailed with the Code Zero back down to Orontes as we had an issue with the Masthead Kite halyard. At this stage the wind was consistently in the 23-25knt range and with the waves in a different direction from the wind, it made for an uncomfortable ride to Orontes. We rounded Orontes in the early hours of the morning and laid the finish line in one tack. The breeze lightened as we sailed across the Gulf back to the finish. In the end we finished in about 12 knots of breeze from the NE at about 4.30am. It appeared that the boats behind us may have had a lot more easterly breeze and less of it. All in all, it was a challenging race over an interesting course and we finished a lot earlier than the forecasts predicted – which is always a nice way to finish!

MARINE ACADEMY DAY SKIPPER & COMPETENT CREW
The CYCSA Marine Academy run a variety of courses to suit most needs, and learning to sail is just the beginning! Did you know we run Live Aboard Courses? In order to complete your Competent Crew or Day Skipper courses, you need to have a total of 5 days Live Aboard clocked up—this can be done as either a 5 day Live Aboard Course, or by a combination of a 2 day Live Aboard plus a 3 day Live Aboard Course. Live aboard courses are used to cover sailing miles and days aboard to complete our RYA / YA certificates. These courses are conducted on academy 1 with between 3-5 students sleeping overnight at a selected marina or safe mooring and are designed to teach you how to live and travel on a sail cruising yacht. The Marine Academy have 2 day Live Aboard courses running on the 15-16 February and the 29-30 March 2014. These courses include night sailing. Our 3 days Live aboard courses are being run from the 8-10 March and 25-27 April 2014. Remember, if you are interested in completing either your Competent Crew Certificate, or your Day skipper Certificate, these courses are a must-do! For more information, visit our website.
