DOWNWIND Racing Association Newsletter CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Diary Dates

Welcome to the New Year and a warm welcome back to the crews of Two True and Patrice IV following their Sydney-Hobart race. Patrice posted a 12th place in the Division 3 IRC fleet while Two True sailed a tight competition to be 33rd boat across the line and equal third in Division 4 IRC. Two True then sailed to Melbourne for the Festival of Sails (aka: Geelong Week as it will probably always be known to the rest of us). Andrew Saies and his crew posted a commendable 3rd in Div B IRC in the Melbourne stage, 4th in the same Division down in Geelong and 9th in the Premier Racing Passage (combined). I am sure I speak on behalf of all racing members when I extend a warm “well done” to the crew of both boats who represented the CYCSA well at such prestigious regattas.

REX recently addressed a request from Division 2 Skippers in our Phil Hoffman Twilight Series for separate race results for Cruising A and Cruising B. We have responded by separating the fleet as asked but we will continue to input the recorded race time for every boat into our Combined Twilight Series database so that we can produce an overall winner at the completion of Series 2. On the subject of Twilights, I made comment a few weeks ago which related some events which I personally witnessed, that being some aggressive (if legal) manoeuvres out on the course by some competing boats in the pre-start and mark roundings of some recent races. On this particular evening I commented that we had enjoyed perfect weather for twilight racing, and getting friends and colleagues out on the water for a fun social race on such a night was exactly what Twilight Racing is all about. I further commented (in a jocular fashion) that anyone who takes Twilight racing too seriously should perhaps rethink their actions. This comment was in no way an attempt to demean our wonderful Twilight fleet; rather it was an attempt to give some skippers pause for thought. Speaking on behalf of REX, we hold the view that Twilight Racing is the ideal forum to encourage novice crews who might come as guests and also to encourage CYCSA Yacht owners to participate in racing, not scare them away. If a new owner is not as au-fait with the rules as a Skipper who can demonstrate impressive helm skills and rule knowledge, then surely it would be prudent for such skippers to grant leniency and hopefully not force the rules to the point where boats, and people, could potentially be broken. REX believes that we have an adequate sufficiency of Inshore, Coaster and Regatta racing to test the mettle of any competitive skipper but Twilight racing is, above all, aimed at encouraging owners to enjoy social racing in a relaxed atmosphere, not scare them away from the possibility of racing, so I do urge all skippers to be mindful of other boats with guests onboard during Twilights and resist the temptation to force a point for the sake of it .

I attended my first Kaesler Cup at the RSAYS this month and was surprised to learn of its origins. I now stand fully informed (thanks to some well-chosen words from Peter Kelly and the Kaesler sponsors) that the race was designed from the outset as a bid to encourage competitive racing and social interaction between the CYCSA and RSAYS. A course set outside the river saw the fleet enjoy a mix of windward work, reaches and enjoyable downwind runs to the Silt ground before finishing in the river. Crews from Rapid 1 and Bullistic enjoyed the after-race celebrations and presentations on the Squadron Quarterdeck and I sincerely hope that when next years’ race comes around, more CYCSA crews might see fit to embrace the philosophy of this event (because it IS about both clubs) and perhaps journey around the corner to sample the squadron’s hospitality. Like any sport, our two keelboat clubs have a long established and healthy onwater rivalry but events such as the Kaesler cup serve to perhaps remind us, first and foremost, that every person aboard every racing yacht is there because they love to race and that rivalry should perhaps end when our boats cross the finish line. Congratulations to Andrew Corletto and his Shining Sea crew, they raced superbly on the day and justly took out the top prize.

FROM THE RACE OFFICE

Hello Racing Members! Happy New Year and welcome to our 2012 Sailing Season! The weather Gods have not been kind to us this season - it feels like every Wednesday and Saturday is either too windy, or not windy enough! To this end, we had to postpone our first race for 2012, which was scheduled to be raced on the 7 January (Coaster Race 6). This race MAY be resailed at some point before the end of the season. The Racing Executive will discuss and all members will be given ample notice to any unscheduled re-sails. We held our 2nd annual Australia Day Race on the 26 January - Thanks to skippers and crew from Another Planet, School’s Out, Minnon, Rapid 1, Liberator, From Russia With Love, Rock On, Medosa, Synergy, Adria, Kudos, Patrice IV and That’s Life for coming along for the race, and bringing your family and friends along for the Canegrass Saltbush Lamb BBQ following the race. A big thank you to Brenton, Tracey and crew on Another Planet for taking me out for the day (yes, I managed to escape the office for a sail!). Extra special mention must also go to BBQ chef extraordinaire Roger Nicolson for his help after the race, and of course, to our fearless leader Traci Ayris, who works tirelessly and gives up so much time for the Racing Association. On the topic of people who help out the Racing Association, I would like to acknowledge Greg Patten and his tasty Canegrass Saltbush Lamb, for once again sponsoring our Australia Day Twilight BBQ, in addition to the donations they give for our normal twilight races and the short-handed series. Greg and family are incredibly generous with their donations and the support they give the Racing Association. We are grateful to all of our members who have been snapping up our Race Day Sponsorship packages and using their businesses to support the club. Andrew Saies (Sportsmed.SA) and Traci Ayris (Channel 7 SA Life TV) are a couple of examples of Racing Members who have dug deep to support our association. Thank you guys! And of course, we can’t forget Peter Holden (from the Stag Hotel, who crews on Kudos) who has been kindly donating Stag food and beverage vouchers each Twilight Race. We are lucky to have such wonderful support from some great businesses. Following wonderful support from our Racing Members for our REX Twilight Night raffles we’ve finally achieved our goal and can now purchase two new hand held radios for our Duty Crew! Our Australia Day Twilight Barbecue, thanks to the generosity of Greg Patten and Canegrass Saltbush Lamb also put money in the kitty which will offset the purchase of non-floating rope for our bouys. This might help alleviate the problem of competing boats unwittingly becoming a mark of the course! The Adelaide - Port Lincoln Bluewater Classic is fast approaching, and I hope you are all getting your vessels up to scratch for the race. Please remember that you need YA membership to take part in this race. If you do not have your YA number, please let me know and I will sort it out for you. If you have any questions relating to the 2011-12 season, or our Race Day Sponsorship, please contact me on 8248 4222; or racing.manager@cycsa.com.au

AUSTRALIA DAY TWILIGHT RACE Thursday the 26th January saw the Racing Association hold our 2nd annual Australia Day Twilight Race. It was great to see a fleet of 13 boats take to the water for the early start. Conditions were windy and choppy out on the water, which made for an exciting race! Race Officer Ray Evans set a great course around to the wreck buoy and along the outside of the channel, and the rest of the Duty Crew did their usual stellar jobs on the water.

SAFETY CHECKS

Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race 2012 ~Safety Checks~ The Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race is scheduled for Friday the 17 February 2012. Please be aware that this race is a Category 3 race and all competing boats must meet this safety category in order to compete. The CYCSA Safety Officer will be conducting safety checks on a range of competing vessels between now and the start of the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race. These safety checks should be seen as an opportunity to learn and discuss equipment and practices as well as highlight the need to adhere to the safety requirements of the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race. Please note that boats who cannot meet this requirement prior to the start and do not comply, will be reported to the Organising Authority immediately and may be scored DSQ for the race. Category 3 Monohull Safety Audit form can be found on the ‘Racing Documents’ page of the CYCSA website (www.cycsa.com.au), under the title ‘Safety Forms’. Alternatively, you can contact Jess in the Race office for more information. Please also note: The CYCSA Racing Executive urges all competing boats to refer to CYCSA Sailing Instructions 2011-2012 1.7: “The race committee of the Port Lincoln Yacht Club (PLYC) will conduct and issue separate Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions for the Adelaide-to-Port-Lincoln Blue Water Classic. Where there is a conflict they shall replace these Sailing Instructions. Entrants in the CYCSA MUSTO Offshore Series must also comply with CYCSA SI 2011-2012 6.9.1 for the Adelaideto-Port-Lincoln Blue Water Classic. Entrants competing in the CYCSA Offshore Series Adelaide-to-Port-Lincoln Race shall also be entrants in the PLYC Adelaide-to-Port-Lincoln Blue Water Classic. Please note that the CYCSA Racing Executive strongly recommends that all CYCSA boats entered in the Bluewater Classic comply with CYCSA safety requirements as outlined in CYCSA SI 2011-2012 6.9.1” DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU

FESTIVAL OF SAILS - 2012 GEELONG WEEK

The 2012 Festival of the Sails (formally known as Geelong Week) was held from the 21-29 January 2012. There were only 2 South Australian entrants in the Regatta this year, and both were from the CYCSA: Two True (Andrew Saies) and Game On (Julian Newton ).

Game On (a Thompson 8) was entered in the Sports Boat Series, and finished the series in a creditable 4th place out of 14 starters in the sports boat division.

Two True (a Beneteau First 40) was entered in the Premier Racing Series (Division B). The IRC class had 9 starters and the results for the series were as follows: 1: Executive Decision (Adams 10 from RYCV) 2: Two True (on a count back from Ikon) 3: Ikon (Beneteau First 45 from HBYC) In the 8 races (including the passage to Geelong) sailed at Geelong with the same 9 starters, Series Results were as follows: 1: Executive Decision 2: Ikon 3: Reverie (Beneteau First 45 from RBYC) 4: Two True DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU

2011 SYDNEY TO HOBART TWO TRUE (Skipper: Andrew Saies) The 2011 Rolex Sydney Hobart was Two True’s 3rd Sydney to Hobart. In the boat’s first Rolex Sydney Hobart in 2009, Saies and his crew were declared the overall winners of the race, surviving a protest for an incident at the first rounding mark in Sydney Harbour. Her second journey to Hobart was not to be: she suffered mast damage on her delivery to Sydney, was loaned a mast to make the Boxing Day start only to retire on the morning of the 28th December due to engine issues. This year, Andrew and his crew (Brett Young, Les De Wit, Mark Hutton, Rob Human, Rob Last, David McKay, Tyson Lamond and Jason Flak) crossed the line in 33rd place, and came in an equal 3rd in Division 4 IRC, & 3rd in Division 3 ORCI.

Congratulations Two True!

PATRICE IV (Skipper: Shane Wiseman) The 2011 Rolex Sydney Hobart was Patrice IV’s first campaign. Patrice IV is a new Beneteau First 45 launched and commissioned in April 2011 and is owned by Garry Tucker and skippered by Shane Wiseman. It was the first Sydney to Hobart for 7 of the crew (Wiseman, Andy Shipp, Les Smith, Thomas Schultz, Rex Davis, Grant Lomman, and Ashley Halliday), whilst the remainder of the crew had a few campaigns under their belts (Geoff Common 1, Brett McPeak 1, Paul ‘Doc’ Flaherty 4). Patrice IV crossed the line in 51st position (out of the 88 boats entered), and finished 12th in Division 3 IRC, and 7th in Division 3 ORCI. A great effort for their first Rolex Sydney Hobart
