CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
We’re about to wrap up our Winter Season so I’d like to thank all of you who supported the Winter and Short Handed Series this year. Congratulations to Greg Manuel and Trevor Conyers on their Winter Series Div 1 and 2 wins respectively. It’s been a stellar season for That’s Life as they also won the Port Line Cup this year. Well done all! Congratulations to our wonderful Duty Crew stalwart Ron Yeates. On application by REX, the CYCSA board has recently awarded Ron with an Honorary Membership in recognition of nearly three decades of continual volunteer service to our Racing Association and the CYCSA in general. Please congratulate Ron if you see him around the club. Thank you to those who attended the recent AGM, our program has been finalised and it will be online shortly. This coming season we will also offer a NON-SPINNAKER division in our Coaster Series which may hopefully encourage a few cruising boats to join us out on the water. Research is proving beyond doubt that people want to race, but race socially (hence the popularity of twilight racing) so we think that a Non-Spinnaker division for our non-windward/leeward racing could prove to be popular. If you know anyone who may be interested please encourage them to nominate.
Mon 7: Labour Day By now many of you would have heard about the AMS measurement system. Public holiday Wed 9: Skipper’s and Crew Debriefing Sat 12: Race 1 Summer Series Sat 26: CYCYSA Opening Day
William has an article in this newsletter which will explain a little more about it. We do have boats already which are measured for AMS and REX will be able to produce results for those boats. Our hope is that, after monitoring it for this season, we should have enough boats to include AMS series results in the future. On a final note, Yachting Australia have nominated Sunday October 27 as their National Discover Sailing Day. The timing is unfortunate as it is the day following our own Opening Day but we do believe that it would be wonderful to support this initiative. The format for this day is to take people for a short jaunt out of the marina, hoist a sail, cruise a short distance and return to dock. We would anticipate that a window of 2-3 hours would suffice. We would ask that any racing skippers who may be able to provide their boat (and skeleton crew) for a few hours on this day to contact Craig Evans or myself as soon as possible.

FROM THE RACE OFFICE
RACING ASSOCIATION Hi Racing Members, SPONSORS SEASON 2012‐2013 Another rather cold month has again flown by here in
the race office. It only seems like yesterday that I was getting taught the ropes but I’m now in my 4th month here and I have now finished my uni hours and have become a casual employee. I will be in the office all race days and one day during the week.
I’ve now managed 5 races for both the Short Handed and Winter series and I seem to be getting the basics down now. I appreciate everyone’s patience with me, especially the REX for all their help.
The Racing Association AGM was held on the 26th of July. With the absence of Traci Ayris, the meeting was run by William Strangways. The night went well with an overview of the past season and the preview of the program for the upcoming season being the major highlights.
As the Winter Series heads towards a close, we say goodbye to the 2012-2013 racing season and welcome the upcoming 2013-2014 season. The season nominations will be available shortly and I look forward to getting as many of you nominating and racing next season! Until next time, stay warm and happy sailing! FASTNET 2013
I am sure that many of you were glued to Yellowbrick, the yacht tracking system for Fastnet 2013, watching online as SMB and Two True Tarka battled for on‐water glory in a massive fleet of more than 280 yachts. For those who weren’t avidly following the action, the great news was that Secret Men’s Business cracked a Podium finish in the top IRC division of the race. They took on the big guns (such as RAN, Bella Mente etc.) to achieve third place in the 14 boat IRCZ fleet. With a beat to Fastnet Rock followed by another beat on the return leg, conditions were far from perfect for the boys so their final result was even more commendable. Also repre‐ senting us overseas was Andrew Saies and his team on Two True Tarka (a chartered First 40). This local team competed against 77 others in their division (IRC2) and raced consis‐ tently well to take 15th position on crossing the line (these results are Provisional at time of writing with IRC Overall results yet to be determined). We congratulate all CYCSA racing members who journeyed to the UK to compete in the Fastnet. A fantastic effort! We look forward to hearing all the stories of the race and wel‐ coming SMB back to her home berth soon.

SAFETY FORMS The new category 3 & 6 forms have been updated and will need to be com‐ pleted for the upcoming 2013‐2014 season. The forms will be on the CYCSA website under ‘Racing Documents’ and will also be available in the Race Office if you can’t access them online. ‐ Jon Henschke DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE DOWNWIND WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU

WINTER SERIES RACE 4 Sunday 30th June 2013. Run by CYCSA (W/L)
The 30th of June was the 4th race of the Port River and Combined Winter Series. 29 boats from the CYCSA and RSAYS set out for a W/L race. With winds of 7 knots at 280 degrees, Division 1 started at 12:00 and Division 2 started at 12:05. On a cold but clear day, the guys started with a clear start and were to complete 2 laps. With winds picking up slightly as the race began, the rac‐ ers were able to complete the race with the first boat over the line finish‐ ing just under 2 hours. With the last boat finishing just under 3 hours, it meant that the fleet and the duty crew got back to the marina around 15:30. Trevor Conyers on Rock On had an excellent race, finishing first across the line and first in Division 2 for both combined and CYC results. James from Port River Marine came down to help with the presentations and the majority of the fleet enjoyed a bite to eat and a drink or two. ‐ Jon Henschke PORT RIVER MARINE WINTER SERIES

CANEGRASS SHORT‐HANDED SERIES Race 5 of the Canegrass Short‐Handed Series was unfortunately abandoned due to the wind being too strong for the racers. After having winds of 25 knots plus for most of the week, it was looking unlikely the day before that the race would go ahead. With many of the racers questioning whether the race would go ahead, it was abandoned on the morning of the race as the conditions had unfortunately not improved. On the positive side, it sets up a very exciting last race for the racers with 1st place still open to a few racers. ‐ Jon Henschke DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE DOWNWIND WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU

WINTER SERIES RACE 5
Sunday 14th July 2013. Run by RSAYS (Fixed Mark) The 5th race of the Port River and Winter Series was held on the 14th of July. The squadron ran this race with Langdon setting a fixed mark course for the 25 boats out on the water. The race was set to start at 12:00 but with a few techni‐ cal problems there was a slight delay. After a small wait, Division 1 started at 12:06 and Division 2 started at 12:11. There was a fairly steady wind for this race of approximately 10 knots, at 315 degrees, with stronger gusts providing racers with some good quality sailing. Peter Hawker on Carbon Credit flew through the pack finishing in just under 2 hours, with the next boat finishing roughly half an hour later. The majority of the fleet finished within about 45 mins of each other. The patio area was full of racers by 15:30 who enjoyed some live music and some wonderful food put on by Dorian and the staff from the kitchen. ‐ Jon Henschke

PORT LINE CUP Port Line Cup ‐ Sunday 4th August
Although Saturday was very rugged with 30+ knots and rain for the PASC, the Ice Breaker Series entrants in the Port Line Cup were greeted with 10 to 12 knots north/west to westerly breezes for the duration of the race. The course was set in the traditional manner so there was ample chance for skippers and crews to show their skills reaching, on the wind and running. There were 45 entrants but only 40 starters who all made it to the finish line. On PHS, the first 36 yachts finished within 10 minutes and 43 seconds. The overall fastest was Aikin from the RSAYS. The first 20 yachts on corrected time were shared around between 5 clubs with 8 PASC, 5 CYCSA, 5 RSAYS, 1 Henley Yacht Club and 1 from Christies Yacht Club. ‐ William Strangways

PLYMPTON & LE HUNTE CUP
The RSAYS’ Plympton Cup and Le Hunte Cup was held on the 16th of June in conjunction with the Winter Series Race 3. It was an early start for the racers on a very cold morning, with a question over whether the race would even start with minimal wind predicted. Questions were answered soon enough though with all fleets starting in a very mild breeze of 4 knots with Div 1 starting at 10:00, Div 2 starting at 10:05 and Div 6 starting at 10:10. A clean start was had by all boats except one who received an OCS for being a little eager. Due to very light winds, the course was shortened quite extensively, with the finish line being moved to the end of Henley Beach jetty, a move which allowed all boats to achieve a finish time. The course was very spread out as some boats struggled in the light winds. The first boat finished just after 12:30 and the last boat finished just over an hour later. After a slow cruise back to the CYCSA and RSAYS, the results were presented at the RSAYS late afternoon with racers from both clubs coming to the presenta‐ tion and seeing how they competed in some very light and cold conditions. ‐ Jon Henschke

IRC NEWS
The 2013/2014 season is rapidly approaching. If you have purchased any new sails or made any improvements which require measurements, make sure you include the changes with your revalidation otherwise there will be charges by YA to process amendments and issue updated certificates. Race 1 of the IRC Div 1 State Championships is an inshore long fixed mark on the 12th of October. This season we have a total of 13 races including only 1 offshore, the Port Lin‐ coln Race. The Div 2 State Champs consists of 9 races, including 1 long coaster. With 5 new yachts in the club, we look forward to an increase in fleet numbers for both divisions. If any measuring is required, please contact William Strangways ‐ PH 8296 3256

AMS & SMS NEWS
On Sunday 19th May 2013, John Chatham, the guru of the AMS/SMS Rating System, came from Melbourne to the CYCSA to spread the word on the merits of both rating systems. Although only 11 people turned up, those in attendance found the concept interesting & are quite keen to get a decision up & running for the 2013/14 summer season. The certificates are current from the 1st of October to the 30th of September, so they could also be used in the Winter Series if required. If you’re interested in racing this season under the AMS rating system, please contact William Strangways as soon as possible.
