CHAIRMAN’S REPORT This is my final Chairman’s report before the reins are officially handed over to Rob Sellick who will head up the ongoing Racing Association Committee. For more years than I care to count I’ve been a part of this committee in various capacities and it has been both a challenging and rewarding experience in that time. My reasons for stepping down completely from the Racing Association Committee revolve around work commitments, the fact that I am now spending quite a lot of time interstate and that I have also taken on a Board position with the South Australian Living Arts Festival. I’ll certainly remain a member of the club though and intend to join in with future racing and social activities as time allows.
In my tenure I’ve seen many changes and, without doubt, there are more challenges ahead however I’m sure that Rob and his Committee (Vice-chair William Strangways and members Adrian Wotton, Shevaun Bruland, Mark Hutton and Steve Power) are more than up to the task. In recent times it has been interesting to see many skippers embracing AMS and I look forward to seeing how that progresses over the seasons ahead. I do believe that high-level competitive yacht racing as a sport will continue to evolve but there is, and will always be, a strong component of “social” racers who remain a fundamental component of all keelboat clubs. It seems to me that there are many boats within our marinas which don’t get to stretch their legs very often, even in a sedate way, and I find it a little sad. I hope that we’ve been through the J curve and that we’ll soon see more and more “cruiser-racers” wishing to step back aboard and rediscover the wonderful social life that revolves around Yacht Racing at the CYCSA.
I’d like to thank all members of past racing committees and the entire CYCSA staff for their support and help whilst I was carrying out my role as Chair and in particular I wish to thank our wonderful racing manager Jess Hargreaves whom I was constantly in contact with. Jess is the glue who holds everything together and I’m sure my inbox will be far less cluttered from this point onward. Please continue to communicate your thoughts and suggestions for the committee via Jess or an elected member as it’s so important that they understand and can deal with any concerns from members. In closing, I thank you for your friendship and camaraderie over the past ten years or so. I wish you all a wonderful Spring/Summer season of racing and look forward to catching up now and again on the Patio.

INCOMING CHAIR REPORT
Hello from the desk of your new Chairperson. First I would like to thank the retiring committee members: Past Chair Traci Ayris, you have left the Racing Executive in better condition than when you took it on 5 years ago. Brenton Pegler, thanks for keeping the past committee honest with your questions. Roger Nicolson, your input on trying to grow the fleets was great. John Gibson, thanks for your assistance regarding race protocol - I know you have left the committee but your guidance will still be sought on race management protocol. I would also like to thank again the volunteers that make the executive what it is: duty boat crews, seconded members to the committee for advice on racing rules and protocols. The racing calendar could not be as good as it is without these volunteers so thanks again on behalf of all the competitors. The new season’s programme is now up and I encourage you all to assist us by putting in your nomination as soon as possible. (Once Jess releases the nomination information!) Finally, congratulations to those who where triumphant over the recent winter series.

RACE OFFICE REPORT
DOWNWIND
Hello from the Race Office!
We are getting ready to say goodbye to Season 2013-14 and some changes have been made to our line up for the coming season. Brenton Pegler and Roger Nicolson have stepped down from the REX after being involved for a few years. I would like to thank them for the time and effort they have put in over the years. Brenton will be staying on as our Safety Officer so if you have any safety concerns, he is still the man to see. Very special mention to our outgoing Chair, Traci Ayris, who has stepped down after 9 years on the REX, 4 of which have been in the capacity of Chairperson. I’m sure you all agree that she has been fantastic whilst at the helm - I’m sad to see her go. Onwards and upwards! Our new REX members for season 2014-15 are Mark Hutton, Adrian Wotton, Shevaun Bruland, and our newest member, Steve Power. Our new Chair is Rob Sellick, and continuing on a Vice-Chair is William Strangways. As we start getting organised for the exciting upcoming season, I have spent some time reflecting on the season past, and feel it is necessary to give some accolades to the William Strangways. William spent much of last season organising and implementing the most significant change to keelboat yachting in South Australia in quite some time, with the introduction of the AMS rating system to the CYCSA. It has been incredibly successful with close to 50 yachts holding certification in SA - by far the largest number of rating keelboats in our history. Well done on this successful venture William! I am in the process of getting the documentation and nominations for the upcoming season organised, so keep your eyes peeled for these in the coming weeks. Here’s to a successful season, looking forward to seeing you all at the club again in the warmer months. JESS HARGREAVES RACING MANAGER

DESTINATION RACE TO PT VINCENT
The annual Port Vincent Destination Race was held on the weekend of 5-6 July 2014. There were yachts racing in the 2 handed division as well as the fully crewed division, with 13 boats in total lined up for an early 1000am start in blustery cold wet conditions. The wind was directly out of the west, right where we all needed to go. After the start the boats split, some going south and some north. The boats that went north did better by getting under heavy rain clouds with up to 25 knots of wind under them. The boats heading south lost out with light winds and a very confused sea state. We sailed through very light patches and then under heavy cloud with pouring rain and strong winds. I was crewing on Aquila and we buried the boat under some big waves, at times getting water down below through normally secure hatches. No one would describe the sail over as pleasant but it was a test of skippers sailing and tactical abilities. Carbon Credit, a carbon fiber trimaran from RSAYS, beat Aquila to Port Vincent by 5 minutes after trailing for all but the last 15 minutes. Aquila took 6 hrs to complete the race with G Wizz, the first mono a further 1 hour behind the leader. The wind completely died out late in the day and left boats rolling in sloppy seas and very little wind. Boats where still coming in late on the Saturday night. The prizes were given out in pouring rain on the pontoon alongside G Wizz. The weather didn't dampen the night with most of us having a small drink to keep warm. The BBQ was its usual hit with Greg Patten generously donating the meat and the other competitors sharing their goodies such as prawns, oysters, salads and sweets. A great night was again a highlight of this event. The social side of sailing was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Sunday we all woke feeling a little seedy. Must have been due to the weather the day before. It was decided to have a fun race home. Unfortunately there was very little wind. Some boats managed to sail but most put their iron topsails on and motored home. On Aquila we had dolphins playing on our bow for ages and we enjoyed a nice lazy motor home. I think everyone had a great experience racing over even though very challenging. I invite everyone to join us next year for this event. It is part serious race and part cruising. Sail as hard or as easy as you feel is right for you. Come along and be part of a great social event held every July. I look forward to seeing everyone in Port Vincent next year for our next adventure.

IRC NEWS
Since the end of the summer season very little has happened on the IRC front apart from revalidation notices being sent to all 2013 certificate holders. Changes to the rules were listed in the May / June edition of Downwind. On the 30th of July I remeasured & weighed Secret Mens Business 4.5 after the hull modifications. It will be interesting to see what effect the new measurements have on their current rating. ~ William Strangways
AMS NEWS The inaugural DIV 1 & 2 AMS Combined Winter Series is now completed. Congratulations to the placegetters. In Division 1 Slipknot (Seb Bohm) dominated with 2 wins, 2 seconds and a 3rd in the 5 completed races, followed by Vertigo (Jamie Goode) in 2nd place and White Knight (David Knights) only 1 point away in 3rd spot . In Division 2 Take 5 (Steve Martin) was a clear winner with 3 wins & 2 seconds from Arcadia (Paul Bogner) in 2nd place and Locomotion (Peter Hall) in 3rd. I recently remeasured and weighed SMB 4.5 following the hull modifications. The amended certificate was processed overnight so Geoff could use it in the Port Line Cup. Unfortunately they hit a mud bank and lost 3 or 4 mins, however still got line honours! Their rating jumped from 1.071 to 1.089, however it appears they are going considerably faster with the new configuration. On Wednesday 6th of August I arranged an AMS weighing day at Marina Adelaide. |Macweld Cranes were very efficient getting the 6 boats weighed in about 2 hours. Participants were Rival, Julia, Nina, Vicky J IV, Blue Diamond and Sea Snake. Special thanks go to Stuart Shimeld from Rival for volunteering 2 hours of his time in the cold water ensuring the rear crane sling was quickly put in place clear of sail drives and prop shafts! All went well and we should have over 50 yachts with an AMS certificate in SA for the 2014/15 racing season. ~ William Strangways DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU
