Chairman’s Report… Thank you to all skippers who responded to our survey. In all we had 19 answers and our program will be finalised now that we’ve taken the democratic response of tabulating the yes, no and maybe’s. Unfortunately we are, for varying reasons, unable to facilitate every request but our recent committee meetings have been full of open and earnest discussion as we look to the future of CYCSA racing. With the resignation of Peter Hall these past weeks our committee has seconded John Gibson to fill his position until the coming AGM. We thank John for his wonderful dedication to our sailing program, both as an RO and now as a committee member. I hope that he may even nominate for a position in the coming weeks.

AUSTRALIA DAY TWILIGHT/RACE: (Thursday Jan 26 2012). The numbers supported racing on the Thursday holiday. The decision will be to race in the afternoon along a similar format to the extremely popular Australia Day race held earlier this year, especially if the weather forecast is kind. LADIES TWILIGHT: There will be no Friday Ladies Twilight series as very few respondents indicated an interest. CHAIRMAN’S CUP: We will schedule the Chairman’s Cup as a fun Sunday race on January 29. WINDWARD/LEEWARD RACING: Some members have asked for an increased number of Windward/Leeward races however, in keeping with IRC guidelines (reprinted in the IRC Section of this newsletter) we will continue to program a mixed program for all series. We did receive requests that the Premiers Cup return to a five-six race W/L regatta but REX was concerned that, following a review of nominations for this regatta over past years, the increased fleet numbers attending this regatta since it was changed from a multi-race W/L format to a double W/L then longer race Sunday would support that the majority of racing members prefer a mix of racing. A stipulation was however made by REX that the RO for this regatta take into account that the Sunday race should include a W/L component as opposed to programming a simple reaching race. DESTINATION RACE: A destination race was proposed for March 10, it received support from nearly half of the respondents however concern was expressed that the date was too close to Lincoln. A Race to American River has been proposed for January, more information on that elsewhere in this newsletter. AVERAGE POINTS: most respondents had no objections to boats receiving average points whilst they compete interstate but some concerns were raised that such boats need to meet reasonable criteria. The committee subsequently made the decision that average points will be awarded upon application and assessment by REX. TWILIGHT RACING: A suggestion has been put to REX that our Phil Hoffman Wednesday Night Twilight Series utilise two windward marks, or set two separate courses which, in effect, would mean the fleet would split into two divisions. By grouping boats by class/speed courses could be set to enable the entire fleet to finish closer together (approximately a 90 minute race for all). If you have any views on this please communicate them to Jess as we will discuss this suggestion at our next REX meeting. Those of you who have been around the competing in the Short-handed and Port River Marine Winter Series would be aware that I took on the thankless task of Racing Manager when Jess took her annual leave. We managed to get some results for most races.. (a good thing). Thanks to William Strangways and Donna Marshall for their help and to our sponsor Leica Theodore, always a good sport, who volunteered to cook the barbie on Winter Series days. We are in the final stages of putting the program to bed for the coming season and you will receive an email when it is ratified and uploaded. As we near our AGM I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed, both on and off water, to the past season. My fellow Racing Executive members, Brenton Pegler, Roger Nicholson, Nikki Burtt, Peter Hall and Vice Chair William Strangways. A special mention goes to our Rear Commodore Rob Sellick for his invaluable support and advice. I encourage anyone who has strong views on racing at our club to nominate for REX, with Jess’s wonderful help the role played by REX has been far less time consuming than it possibly has been over past years !

RACING MANAGER’S REPORT
Hello from the Race Office! I am back at my desk after a relaxing holiday in sunny QLD—it has been very hard settling back into the cold mornings of Adelaide! A big thank you to the wonderful Traci Ayris, William Strangways and Rob Sellick who took care of the Race Office in my absence. The members of our Racing Association are very important to us, and the Racing Executive has been listening to your feedback and working hard on incorporating suggestions into the program for Season 2011/2012. I urge you all to be in attendance at the Racing Association Annual General Meeting to ratify the program. Don’t forget, the AGM will be held on Friday the 29 July 2011 in the CYCSA Horizons Function Room, commencing at 1930 hours. I am also putting a call out for members of the Racing Executive - the REX is re-elected at each AGM, so if this is something that interests you now is the time to step forward! You will find a Nomination Form over the page. Please fill it out and forward to me, with a brief CV on your sailing experience, by Friday the 8th July 2011. We’ve been putting some great action photos of our races online recently - find our Facebook page and like us—feel free to tag any photos you see of your boat and crew! Until next time, enjoy the reminder of your Winter sailing, or your Winter break if you’re having a rest over the colder months!
~ Cheers, Jess

IRC NEWS WEIGHING & MEASURING
YA IRC Measurer’s Seminar
It was mentioned in the April edition of Downwind that another weighing day would be run shortly. On Wednesday 18 May, we had 5 yachts take the opportunity to be weighed. Venue: Blue Sky Marine. Our thanks to Peter Bolton for the use of his premises.
On the 13-15 May, I attended the annual YA IRC measurer’s seminar. James Dadd (IRC Chief Measurer from RORC) was the main speaker and teacher for the practical work. All facets of measuring were covered in detail, in particular a whole afternoon was devoted to sail measuring. It was evident that the Australian measurers were well on the pace and used the same methods as the overseas counterparts.
Due to the later Winter tides, our first yacht was lifted at 1100. Peer Gynt, Bolistik, Dejavu (All from PASC), followed by Freelance (RSAYS), and finally Patrice IV (CYCSA). It was all over by 1600. We were very lucky with the wind – maximum of 6knots N/E early, fading to zero. Unfortunately, due to unforseen circumstances, Marnico and G-Wizz were unable to join in.
“We have long argued that a balance of
There will be 6 IRC rated yachts at PASC this coming season – all are keen to enter the Premier’s Cup and the Great Southern Regatta in Div 2 – we hope the Div 2 CYCSA and RSAYS yachts will join them. There has been strong interest from Div 2 boats, and we anticipate a larger fleet this season. We encourage all Div 2 boats to join this growing fleet!

AMERICAN RIVER DESTINATION RACE Proposal for the Inaugural American River Cup Yacht Race (North Haven to American River, Kangaroo Island via Edithburgh)
A proposal was recently put to the CYCSA by the American River Progress Association which suggested the idea of planning a ‘Destination Race’ to American River, followed by a racing competition and other events once at American River. No date was mooted for this race in the Association’s comprehensive proposal document as they were seeking our thoughts on the subject before proceeding further. A meeting was subsequently held on Saturday 18th June where Commodore Geoff Catt, Vice Commodore Chris Morphett and President Andrew Saies discussed the proposal with Association representatives. The salient points which arose from this discussion are shown below.
•
CYCSA is supportive of the concept of a Festival at American River - good for Club members and good for the community.
•
Long weekends throughout the year should be avoided as they are not long enough to enable meaningful numbers to commit and adverse weather at the last minute would rule most boats out.
•
Strong support was shown for an event over the Post-Christmas/early January period (say 29th Dec - 4th Jan) Suggestions include a "cruise in company" via Wirrinna and/or Edithburgh with no set start time for cruisers and a two stage "twilight" style" race with an overnight stop at Wirrinna for social racers. This could enable other passengers/family to be ferried on non-racing yachts and/or powerboats. It was recognised that many people go back to work on the Monday after New Years Day.
•
Any racing at KI would be in the form of a complementary race to the Ballast Head Cup that is run on New Years Day. It was suggested that it and another similar race in the next two days could make up a Series and a suitable Cup presented.
•
Given that a significant number of CYCSA, RSAYS and other boaties already make KI their destination at this time of the year, it would seem sensible to capitalise on this with the festival type events proposed by the Kangaroo Island American River Progress Association as BBQ's, seafood and wine events at American River are appealing over this period.
•
Suggestion that camping sites would be useful
•
Availability of swing moorings in the lagoon should be confirmed and quantified
If you are interested in such an event we would welcome your thoughts, which we can then pass onto the Progress Association. Please email or leave a note with Jess or convey your thoughts to your association representatives/Commodore/ President/Vice & Rear Commodores so that all input can be considered.
