CHAIRMAN’S REPORT A warm thank you to everyone who competed in the Great Southern Regatta. It was great to see so many people from different clubs join our fleet for some great racing. I would like to thank Commodore Geoff Boettcher for supplying the large screen TV so that we didn’t miss out on the Showdown and also a big thanks to our RO John Gibson and the onwater Duty Crews on CYC1 and CYC2 for their fine efforts over the weekend. As we near the end of another spring/summer season it’s timely to reflect back on the season that was as we plan for the seasons ahead. The Racing Association committee has been involved in earnest discussion about our future programs and it’s important that the views of our members are taken into account. There are a number of ways in which you can offer your end of season feedback. Firstly, by contacting Jess or any member of the Racing Association (myself, William Strangways, Mark Hutton, Adrian Wotton, Rob Sellick, Brenton Pegler, Roger Nicholson or Shevaun Bruland) to discuss your thoughts. Secondly, we will be conducting an end of season debrief at the club on Friday April 30 and thirdly, Shevaun Bruland has been working on an online survey, the details of which will be released very soon. I urge ALL skippers to consult with their crews so that collectively they are in a position to supply us with their feedback on a boat by boat basis. We will endeavour to supply a program that suits the majority of members but we cannot do this without your input. In particular we seek information about the number of weekends you wish to race, the type of racing you are most interested in, your thoughts about regatta and offshore racing and any personal points of view which could help us frame the next program. Please do not disregard the |survey email when it arrives as completing the survey will be simply a matter of clicking on multiple choice answers and should take only a few short minutes of your time. I look forward to seeing you at our Presentation Night on 9 th May and hope that many of you will join us for some (hopefully !) wonderful Winter Series and/or Short-handed Series racing in the coming months.

RACE OFFICE REPORT

Well done everyone, we have made it through to the end of yet another action packed Summer Season! Well done to all of our series winners. As I write think I am in the throws of putting together Presentation Night. If you haven’t already booked your ticket, you’d better get onto it quickly as they are selling quickly! We have another great night in store for you all. It’s now time to start thinking about the Winter Season. The Notices of Race for both the Winter and Short-handed series can be found online, so make sure you get your entries in. Short-handed starts on Saturday 10 May and Winter on Sunday 18 May. A Combined Season Debrief will be held at the CYCSA on Wednesday 30 April. Please ensure you have a representative from your boat there to assist us with some feedback for our new program. Speaking of which, keep your eyes peeled for our survey which will be sent out very soon. We appreciate our skippers taking the time to fill this out so we can see how satisfied you are with our program. In closing, a big thank you to John Gibson, who has recently resigned from the REX so he can focus on his new role at work. John has been a respected member of the Racing Executive since season 2011-12, and we are grateful for his dedication and input over that time. Thanks John!

JESS HARGREAVES RACING MANAGER THANKS TO TOM ABBOTT FOR HIS HUMOROUS CARTOON DEPICTING OUR FINAL TWILIGHT FOR THE YEAR!

CLUB MARINE / LEXUS 64th ADELAIDE TO PORT LINCOLN RACE

Perfect conditions greeted the 42 Keel Boat Entrants for the start at 1500hrs. The wind was around 18 knts from 187 degrees which meant the fleet would be hard on for most of the first leg to Marion Reef Bouy [230 deg]. Occasional gusts up to 22knts tended to be more westerly. Full main and no. 3 headsail seemed to be the most popular rig. About 1 hour into the race SMB 4.5 and Shining Sea were well clear of the fleet on a heading of about 240. Fresh and Rapid 1 were also going well but on a lower course. Following the leaders were a pack including The Gnome, Aikin, G-Wizz, 3 Cool Cats, Concubine, Two True, Zen and Slipknot. By 1700 the breeze had moved significantly to 170 then 155 and eased to 16knts. This however was short lived and came back to 180 and 20knts [still hard on]. 1800 had the breeze going left again to 170 allowing the fleet to come up to the lay line and crack sheets a little, the wave action was more favorable and the fleet were enjoying the ride. Very little change in the order apart from G-wizz breaking away from the pack. 1830 the wind had swung back to 175/180 for about 40 mins causing the fleet to harden up again. It gradually moved to the s/east as forecast which allowed the whole fleet to lay the Marion Reef mark. At approx 2000, the pack rounded Marion - at this point the leaders on the water were SMB 4.5, Shining Sea, Fresh, G-wizz, Aikin, The Gnome and 3 Cool Cats with one big improver That’s Life hot on our heels. The wind was now around 145/150 and 20 knts. Course to Haystack mark -250 [distance 48 nm.] giving the fleet a fast reach along the foot. Saturday 0100: the leaders were well around Cape Spencer, however the following pack had held tight and were abeam Cape Spencer/Emmes Reef [approx 5 hours 50 mins for 50 miles reaching - exciting stuff!] The new course to Dangerous Reef is 310 -the wind now coming from 140 at 16knts made this leg a very square spin run so the fleet had to sail the angles requiring multiple gybes which for many yachts can be a disaster. As usual yachts found it difficult getting through to Garry [vmr Tumby Bay] trying to report they were abeam West Cape. 0615 most of the pack were still in touch and abeam Dangerous Reef, approx 20 miles to go- [it was around this time SMB 4.5 crossed the finishing line] with the breeze now settled in the east south east and fluctuating from 10 to 17 knts the gybing continued up to Donnington. At this point most yachts dropped their spins and reached to Fanny Point. From this mark it is only 3 miles to the finish - spins hoisted again and of course 3 more gybes . 3 Cool Cats finished at 0830 -17hrs 30 mins which is a record for this yacht and also for me in my 43rd Adelaide-Lincoln. With the consistent wind pressure and favorable direction I suspect all yachts may have registered their personal best elapsed time. Saturday was a long hot day for everyone as they are not used to being there so early- lucky for the Marina hotel which was packed. Congratulations to Secret Mens Business 4.5 for taking out line honours at their first attempt in this much smaller yacht and all the place getters in the various divisions. It is good to see the lower budget, regular entrants getting their turn at the top of the list. ~ William Strangways DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU

Monday 25 February: 2 x W/L Race 1 Breeze 5-8 knots – 3 laps – 1 mile Perfect conditions and clear starts in all divisions. The only real drama in this race was 3 Cool Cats mainsail tearing and had to be nursed to the finish Race 2 Breeze 10-12 knots – 3 laps – 1 mile Another clear start for all divisions. The elapsed times for all yachts were considerably less due to the increase in wind speed. Tuesday 26 February: Long Race (Taylors Island) 42 Miles (Division 1) Start to BHP Beacon (on wind) to Donnington Rock (long reach) to Taylors Island (hard on) to Kangaroo Reef Bouy (run / reach) to Northern Entrance (reach) to Sub Bouy (hard on) to No4 Beacon (run) to No2 Club Bouy (reach) to Finish off PLSC Club House. Most of the fleet took between 5 hrs 30 min and 6 hrs, apart from SMB 4.5 who zoomed around the course in just over 5 hours. Wednesday 27 February: Megga’s BBQ Another great weather day—race results extremely close with the first 9 div 1 yachts in 3 minutes and the first 7 div 2 yachts also in 3 mins. I suspect there were at least 250 people on the beach enjoying the bbq and inter boat rivalry. Zen (Sydney) and Wicked (Melbourne) in particular seemed to be loving the atmosphere. Thursday 28 February: 2 x W/L Race 1: 5-10 knots wind swinging as much as 50 degrees - start delayed approx 30 mins -3 laps1 mile. Course worked out ok even with the fluctuating speed and direction of the breeze. The left hand side (eastern) of the course was favoured, however it was difficult to take the pain to get to it. Race 2: similar to race 1 -- another 3 laps -1 mile windward leg. A very exciting racing week had by all punctuated by daily presentations at the Marina Hotel. The series presentations were held in the Lincoln Hotel on Thursday evening . ~ William Strangways DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU

ISLAND CUP (14 March 2014)

It was a warm and calm evening with a light northerly breeze as the fleet set off on the second longest offshore race of our season - the Island Cup. As sunset fell just half an hour after the 7pm start, crews had cameras out to capture memorable images of yachts flying spinnakers in golden evening light and blackened silhouettes of sailors against a coloured sky. The night was undoubtedly the best of the offshore season. There was a full moon with few clouds to obscure the light, and an unusual summer humidity. Warm breeze and flat seas meant those of us prone to seasickness were happy sailors. Spectacular lightning storms were visible on the horizon towards both the north and south and a pod of dolphins escorted us for part of the journey down toward Kangaroo Island. We rounded Beatrice just before dawn and, although the breeze was still light, we traversed an unsettled seaway as we headed north and back up the gulf towards Orontes beacon. The breeze steadily built during the morning and we knew we would be coming home with a fair old blow behind us from the west. Sure enough the forecast held true and our ride back across to North Haven was an absolute cracker! The breeze continued to build steadily until we saw consistent numbers in the low thirties and up to 34 knots from behind. The Concubine hit a new top boat speed of 18.5 knots (once with only a main and staysail flying plus half the crew on the foredeck wrestling to control the S4). It appears that most boats had "a little lie down" or two during this leg, with some also sustaining minor damage. But it was an exhilarating ride home. Congratulations to Aikin from the RSAYS on their win and Concubine came home for the CYCSA to take second place. ~ Shevaun Bruland (Concubine) PHS 1: SLIPKNOT (SEB BOHM) 2: CONCUBINE (JASON WARD) 3: SHINING SEA (ANDREW CORLETTO)

Good news for the AMS cert holders is they do not expire 'till Sept 30 so we have decided to run a Combined Winter Series for Div 1 and 2. This is open to all yachts with a current AMS cert. The 2013/14 summer racing season saw the running of another successful Combined Women’s Series. Consisting of eight races, the series is held each year on a number of Sundays between October and April each year. With four boats from the Squadron (Balancing Act, Blue Diamond, Freedom, and Taniwha) and one from the CYCSA (School’s Out), the races provided a unique opportunity for women to develop skills and confidence by sailing in a competitive but very friendly environment. The crew can be mixed gender but the rules stipulate a woman must be on the helm at all times during the race. After each race, the crews proceed back to the Squadron’s Quarterdeck to have a few drinks; relate tales of bravery, great skill and the occasional mishap; and keenly await the presentations. The boat crews mix freely and generally join tables together to have a few laughs about the previous few hours on the water. This season was competitive as ever and tested all the crews and helmswomen. The first three races were held in challenging conditions with first places shared across three boats: Freedom, Blue Diamond, and the very happy all-women crew of Balancing Act. The fourth race was combined with the Squadron’s Women’s Invitational Keelboat Race. This was particularly exciting, with nine boats competing for some great prizes. Three boats from the CYCSA competed: Sir Les (Leslie Patterson); Julia (Sally-Anne Geddes) and School’s Out (Mary Ann Harvey). The race was held in fairly unpleasant weather with two to three metre swells and very strong winds, with gusts reaching over 30 kts. Freedom prevailed on the day with an excellent first place. Julia sailed really well to finish second, with Liesel (Lisa Bettcher) finishing third. The fifth race was sailed in absolutely perfect conditions with low swells and 12 to 15 knots of wind. The race turned out to be a tussle between School’s Out and Blue Diamond. With some good spinnaker work and a great start in the river, School’s Out managed to stay very close to the much faster Blue Diamond throughout the race and snared her first place of the series. Race seven was a complete reversal with Blue Diamond first, School’s Out second and Freedom third. The seventh and final race (one race was abandoned) was held in beautiful sailing conditions. This was a virtual grand final with all podium places up for grabs. Taniwha moved away from the rest of fleet quite early and the remaining four boats had some interesting tussles on the way to the first mark. A long spinnaker run out to the Northern beacon proved to be vital for the race and the overall series. Taniwha recorded her first win of the series but Freedom just pipped Blue Diamond into second place and, as result, did enough to win the series on a count-back. The final podium places for the series were: 1st - Freedom, 2nd – Blue Diamond, and 3rd - School’s Out. As well as a positive ratio of women crewing in the five boats, the respective skippers were as follows: Balancing Act (Janet Thornley), Blue Diamond (Nives Vincent), Freedom (Deirdre Schahinger, Janice Watson), Taniwha (Barbara Parker), School’s Out (Mary Ann Harvey, Helen Kearney). This year’s series was a lot of fun and we hope to get more women out onto the water for the next season. Adrian Wotton (School’s Out)

GREAT SOUTHERN REGATTA

Another successful regatta conducted by the CYCSA which included the J24 State Championships. Although we did not achieve our target of 40-50 entrants, we were close – 38 total entrants (22 CYCSA, 7 RSAYS, 5 PASC and 4 ASC). On Saturday we had light winds early so the 1130 race for the J24 fleet was only 1 lap (0.4 miles) – turned out well as it took 35-45 minutes. The first W/L race for the GSR started at 1315 with 5knots of wind. Division 1 had 2 laps of 1.2 miles and Division 2/ J24 had 2 laps of 0.8 miles. Most of the fleet were finished by 1445. Second W/L race started at 1505 with flat seas and a 10 knot breeze from 240° although this course was longer than race 1 (Div 1 2 laps 1.6m – Div 2 / J24 2 laps 1.2m). The increased breeze saw the fleet all home in less than 1 hour. After racing, REX put on a $10 BBQ and our commodore arrange a Big Screen TV for the footy tragics to watch the Showdown – it was a great family friendly atmosphere with a number of children playing on the lawns in the sunshine. Presentations at around 6.30pm had about 100 people in attendance to collect the numerous bottles of wine on offer. Sunday – Long Race – flat sea 2knts 310°. The start was delayed – 1205 start for Div 1 3knts at 310°. Race 4 for the J24 fleet was delayed as a 30° shift to the left came through. Eventually got them going with another course of 0.4m 1 lap. Race 5 needed another course change to 180° - length 0.4m and 2 laps. Elapsed time approx 1 hour. Meanwhile, the Div 1 and 2 fleet were making very slow progress. Due to the large wind swings the first windward leg became cracked sheets. Second leg to Northern Silt became a shy kite and the leg to the Wreck Buoy hard on wind. Due to the light conditions, the RO decided to shorten the course at the Wreck Buoy. This was a good decision as it ensured the bulk of the fleet would finish in the time limit of 4 hours. Only Hawks Nest and Freedom failed to finish. Alternative Therapy withdrew early in the race. SMB 4.5 was first home in a bit over 3 hours. A good crowd turned up for the presentations where another load of wine went to the place getters. ~ William Strangways PHS DIV 1 1: VERTIGO (JAMIE GOODE) 2: SLIPKNOT (SEB BOHM) 3: SMB 4.5 (GEOFF BOETTCHER)
