CHAIRMAN’S REPORT A big thank you to everyone who came along to the Racing Association Presentation Night. We saw an increase on an impressive record crowd from last year. This is a night of celebration for ALL racing members was pleasing to see that a broad cross-section of our racing fleet attended on the night, not just the podium finishers. We also thank our wonderful sponsors and I encourage you to acknowledge their generous help and urge all racing members to please consider giving Phil Hoffmann Travel, Port River Marine, Yalumba, Wild Oats, The Stag Hotel, Everett Brookes Jewellers, Canegrass Lamb, and Sportsmed.SA your patronage whenever you can. Entertainment on the night was provided by the roving Three Amigos mariachi band and a wonderful cover band “Our Perspective” drew people onto the dance floor after presentations had concluded.

On behalf of the Racing Association I congratulate Nigel Wilhelm once again on his Crew of the Year award and also Andrew Corletto and his Shining Sea crew for taking out our prestigious Yacht of the Year award. A full report from the night is included in this edition of Downwind.

It has been pleasing to see so many boats out for some flat-water winter series racing. We’ve had some light days breeze-wise but from all reports our series entrants are having a fine time out there. After two races Slipknot is leading the division 1 fleet and Rock On is top of the division 2 results. In our short-handed series, G Wizz and Carioca are currently battling for top spot. I’d also like to thank Shevaun Bruland for the time and effort spent on organising our online survey. As a committee, we were pleased to receive your replies and all comments were taken into consideration whilst planning our next program. Shortly our draft will be released for your comment, I do urge all skippers to discuss this draft with their crew members and return any feedback in writing to either Jess or a REX member.

RACE OFFICE REPORT
Hi all, Well, the days are getting colder and I’m more and more happy to be sitting in my warm office while so many of you crazy kids are out on the water over winter.... Brrrr! The Short-handed and Winter Series have kicked off for another year, and we welcome our sponsors back with open arms - Canegrass Saltbush Lamb and the Patten Family are sponsoring the Short-handed Series once again, and Jim and Leica Theodore from Port River Marine back for yet another year as sponsor of our Winter Series. So far all races have gone ahead with no dramas which is always great to see. We’ve got a few exciting racing events coming up soon, so make sure you lock the 5 & 6 July into your calendar for the annual Short-handed and Fully Crewed Destination Race to Port Vincent - always well attended and from all reports, always a great time over in Vincent with a beautiful Canegrass BBQ and great company. Also, don’t forget the 2 & 3 August when PASC are holding their Annual Icebreaker Series and Port Line Cup another great weekend on the water. The draft program for the upcoming 2014-15 Season is not far from being released. Watch this space and make sure you give us your feedback once you’ve had a look. The Racing Association AGM will be held on Friday 25 July,. We are now accepting nominations for the Racing Executive. If you think you have what it takes, please fill in a nomination form and get it back to me by the 4th July 2014. Please note that I will be on leave from the 14-28 June. In my absence, Jon Henschke will be back in the Race Office on race days only. The Race Office will be unmanned aside from race days, so if you have any urgent business, please contact a member of the Racing Executive or a CYCSA staff member - otherwise I will sort anything out when I get back. Until next time, have a great time on the water, and stay warm!!

CANEGRASS SHORT-HANDED SERIES It is great to see this series going ahead again this season with some of our regulars returning, as well as some newbies giving it a go. The first race was on Saturday 10 May with a small fleet of only 4 boats on the water - G-Wizz, Carioca, From Russia with Love and Coco. After slight panic aboard the start boat CYC2 when the batteries failed, John, George and Ron solved the problem and headed out to sea to work their race day magic. A shortened course could help the slower couple of boats, and only 2 boats finished the first race (G-wizz taking first place, and Carioca coming second). The tradition of the delicious Canegrass Saltbush Lamb BBQ and a few drinks continued after the race, thanks to series sponsor The Patten Family. Race 2 was on Saturday 24 May with 3 starters - this time G-Wizz, Carioca, & From Russia with Love. A lack of wind meant the start was postponed for half an hour but once it started, it was another successful day on the water. G-Wizz was once again victorious with Carioca coming in second, and From Russia with Love in third place. As always, it is a wonderful social gathering every couple of Saturdays. Don’t forget that casual entries are welcome! Contact Jess for more information (jess@cycsa.com.au) DOWNWIND • CRUISING YACHT CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RACING EXECUTIVE WWW.CYCSA.COM.AU

IRC NEWS
DOWNWIND
As you are all aware the 2013 IRC certificates expired on May 31st 2014. Revalidation notices were sent out mid May - assuming you plan to renew your IRC certificate. Have a think about any changes you are considering for next season. If you put in the changes with the renewal you will only have to pay once. If you require any help please ring me on 8296 3256. The following is a list of rule changes for the 2014 certificates: Rule 8.2.1 is amended to clarify that short handed boats may be included in the overall results of a race. Rule 9.6 is amended to clarify from what point a rating protest is applicable. Following a change to the RRS, a new IRC definition of Store Power is added and referenced in Rule 15. Rules 13.1, 22.1 and 22.2 have been re-written to be clearer and more logical without changes in meaning. Rule 21.3.5 is deleted as redundant and potentially misleading in that it is repeated in other rules using different wording. The definition of LP is amended to formally incorporate IRC Notice 01/2013 clarifying measurement of LP for boats that may set more than one headsail simultaneously. ~ William Strangways

PRESENTATION NIGHT
‘WILD OATS’ CREW PERSON OF THE YEAR PERPETUAL TROPHY NIGEL WILHELM Nigel has been an integral part of the Shining Sea crew for several years including all the Sydney Hobart campaigns in 2009 2010, and 2013, as well as the interstate regattas, namely Geelong Week and Sydney 38 Nationals. Prior to joining Shining Sea, he raced on a number of the top boats at CYCSA including Nick George’s DK 46, Exile. In the 2013-14 season, Nigel participated in all the Club races, the Sydney to Hobart, Geelong and Lincoln week. In other words he was on the boat whenever it raced. Nigel’s experience and calmness on the boat has played a big part in Shining Sea’s success this season. As Chris Tillett described it, Nigel is the ‘rock’ on which the crew is based. Nigel is usually the first on the boat on Saturdays to help rig the boat, even though he lives in the Hills and has just about the furthest to travel to get to the Club. He has attended all the working bees on the boat including an all-nighter prepping the boat before it left Adelaide for the delivery to Sydney. Nigel never complains or makes a fuss. He just gets on with it whatever the task or conditions. He has happily trained up new crew and happily passed on to some younger members some of his experience and knowledge. Finally, Nigel is a team player. He puts the boat and the rest of the crew ahead of himself. He is dedicated and hard working. He is skilled and experienced and is happy to share that knowledge with less experienced sailors. As a skipper, I could not ask for more of a crew than what I get with Nigel. ~ Andrew Corletto, Shining Sea.
‘WILD OATS’ CYCSA YACHT OF THE SEASON PERPETUAL TROPHY SHINING SEA 2013-14 was Shining Sea’s first season at the CYCSA and new to the crew. As a result all the crew had to learn how to sail the boat competitively in a relatively short period of time. However, with some training sessions and an extensive summer campaign, we were able to improve and achieve significant results both nationally and locally. Results for 2013-14 include:
2013 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race
3rd Div 3 IRC and sole SA representative with wholly SA crew
2014 Festival of Sails (Geelong Week) 1st IRC and 2nd AMS Div 2 Melb Geelong Passage Race 1st IRC Div 2 Victorian State Championships 1st AMS Div 2 Victorian State Championships Australian Champion – Beneteau Firsts Nationals
SA State IRC Champion
SA State AMS Champion
Adelaide – Lincoln Race 3rd IRC overall and Div 1 and member of successful CYCSA team Lincoln Race Week – 2nd IRC and 2nd AMS
CYCSA Club Offshore – 1st IRC and 2nd PHS CYCSA Club Inshore – 1st IRC, 1st AMS and 2nd PHS 15 firsts over the line in all forms of club racing
