We’ve just recently held the Premier’s Cup which was a great success. A Sat 30: Offshore R2 (Jubilee Cup) big thank you goes to Matt Young from Marine Academy for manning the Race Office all day while I was at a University Exam. Matt’s assistance made it very easy on myself and the Racing Association as we were a tad short handed with so many REX members racing. Thanks also goes out to Owen Mace who kindly took out 2 representatives to watch the start of Race 1 on Saturday. I’m sure the girls would’ve had a great time Wed 4: Twilight R7 watching!

Queen of the Gulf Regatta The Queen of the Gulf Regatta is coming up on the 7th of December. The regatta consists of a Long Fixed Mark race and is open to anyone who is interested in racing! The poster can be found in this edition of Downwind and the Entry Form can be found in the Queen of the Gulf Notice of Race in the Racing Documents page of the club website.

IRC NEWS Since the last update NINA, an Adams 11.9 based at PASC, has been measured and now joins the IRC fleet. Take 5 has also renewed for this season.

The IRC State Championship Division 1 entrants are Shining Sea, Lucette , Slipknot , Two True, Horopito, Kaesler, Vulcan , White Knight, Aikin and Vertigo. The IRC State Championship Division 2 entrants are Young Einstein, Peer Gynt , Take 5, Nina, Freedom, Arcadia and Locomotion.

This past weekend, the 23rd and 24th of November was the SportsMed Premiers Cup comprising of 2 windward/leeward races on Saturday and a long fixed mark race on Sunday. All 3 races are part of the IRC State Championship series.

Shining Sea, whose skipper is Andrew Corletto, will be our sole entrant in this years Sydney to Hobart yacht race representing both the CYCSA and SA. Good luck to Andrew and his crew, let’s hope Andrew can take out the main prize to join recent winners Two True and Secret Mens Business 3.5 on the honour board!

SPORTSMED PREMIERS CUP

This year we had 36 entries (2 more than last year) with a much more even spread between the 3 major keel boat clubs in SA. There were 14 CYCSA, 13 RSAYS, 8 PASC and 1 ASC entrants in this year’s regatta.

We are very grateful that Matt Young from the marine academy ran the race office for us on such a busy Saturday. Jon Henschke was unavailable due to an exam however he was back on deck for Sunday. The weather forecast for Saturday was a South/West breeze of 15/20 knots with clear sunshine and cool winds.

Race 1 Race 1 on Saturday was a Windward/Leeward race with Division 1 racing 2 laps of 2 miles at 180 degrees with 17 knots of wind. The race started at 13:15 with a clean start for all boats who were hard on the wind with lumpy seas of around one and a half metres. The breeze picked up quickly and sat in the 22/25 knot range all the afternoon, generally steady from 180/190 degrees. Alliance withdrew only 30 mins into the race at 1347 with a destroyed main. Just 4 mins later Vulcan withdrew with an injured crewman who was hit by the boom during a gybe. 4 minutes later Horopito was next to withdraw with fixable headsail furler problems. Meanwhile Shining Sea had bolted around the approx 10 miles course in 65 mins just in front of Aikin in 69 mins and Concubine in 70 mins.

Division 2 Race 1 - also a Windward/Leeward race of 2 laps with 1.6 mile W/W leg at 180 degrees. Div 2 started at 1320 in 22 knots from 180 degrees. Another good clean start with 21 boats on the line. At 13:39 Blue Diamond and Troppo withdrew due to a collision, however the rest of the fleet battled their way around the course in rising seas and strong winds. A highlight was the skill shown by Good Company and Freedom in flying their kites whilst many of the larger yachts took the more conservative option and poled out their headsail. Nina was first over the line in 68 mins with Rock On just 40 secs back in 2nd and Dr. Feel Good in 3rd only another 40 secs away.

Race 2 Race 2 - same course as Race 1 with winds increased to 24 knots at 175 degrees. Another good start was at 15:05. It was exciting to see about 30 yacht approaching the leeward mark under spinnaker in 25 knots of breeze. The more experienced crews handled it easily whilst others had plenty of round ups. The E Business withdrew after 1 lap followed by Another Planet who had their kite wrapped around the forestay many times. This time Aikin was first home in 69 mins followed closely by Shining Sea only 20 secs away then Concubine a further 3 mins away in 3rd spot. Div 2 also ran the same course as race 1 with winds at 21 knots from 170. Just prior to the start of the race, Zinzi Silver Jewells and Dr. Feel Good withdrew. The start time for Div 2 was 15:10 - another well behaved clean start. 30 mins into the race the breeze was constant at 24/25 knots and rising seas making the downwind legs "hairy" to say the least.

Nina was first home again in 75 mins followed by Rock On 2 nd, just 20 secs away and Locomotion 3rd, 2 mins adrift. In total we had 8 withdrawals from Div 1 and 2 during the 2 races.

The BBQ programmed for Saturday night after the first days racing went ahead, however our numbers were less than half of our last barbeque during the Great Southern Regatta in March. Although it had been promoted regularly I suspect the 8 withdrawals and the cold, brisk wind kept people away. The crews who made the effort to support the club had a good time with the band adding to the atmosphere.

Apart from the Another Planet crew of 10 people all others had gone by 8 pm. Thanks to Roger and Brenton for cooking the BBQ and to Shevaun and Mark for assisting. Our special thanks go to Martin Oates for delivering the PASC portable BBQ to the CYCSA, we appreciate PASC lending us the BBQ. Our Raffle winners were Greg Scholz, Jesse Mitton and Tracey Pegler claiming 1st to 3rd prize respectively.

Race 3 The forecast for Sunday was much better than Saturday with South/East breeze of 10/15 knots in morning tending to South/Westerly breeze of 15/20 knots in the afternoon. The course was a long inshore course which saw the fleet go from the start to a windward mark to the Wreck Buoy to the lead out mark back to the windward mark to finish, making the course approx 10 miles.

13 boats were on the line for a 12:00 Division 1 start. Horopito went to the buoy end of the line for a clear air start however 90% of the fleet wanted to start at the boat end of the start line, causing havoc.

Aikin pushed Slipknot, Lucette and White Knight above the start boat so they all had to do a 360 to get back to the start line meanwhile Shining Sea had become boxed in between Taniwha and Another Planet with Concubine just in front of these 3, much shouting and a few bumps on the line, resulted in a protest hearing after the race. The course was great giving all points of sailing including windward, reaching and a running legs. The first boat home was Shining Sea in 86 mins with Aikin 3 mins behind 2nd and Concubine came 3rd in 90 mins. As a result of the very lengthy protest hearing, Shining Sea was disqualified from the race.

Division 2 ran the same course as the division 1 fleet, only with a shorter windward leg of 1 mile. The start for the division 2 fleet was similar to the division 1 start, with most boats coming in late to the boat end and barging their way through. The last leg wind had moved about 20 degrees to the west making it too shy to carry kites creating a fast cracked sheet leg instead. DeJa Vu had a much improved race compared to the first 2 races. First home in division 2 was Dr. Feel Good with a time of 80 mins, 2nd was Emma at 83 mins and Zinzi Silver Jewels 3rd place at 84 mins.

A special mention for the Duty Crew who put up with a lot of bouncing around on CYC1 on Saturday in 25 knots of breeze for about 5 hours and Sunday for another 4 hours. Sunday was not as lumpy as Saturday but enough movement to need to hold on.

Presentations went ahead at 4.30 pm as scheduled. Good for Div 2, however we could not make any Div 1 presentations for the Premiers Cup due to the ongoing protest. The final results were not known till 6.15 pm. I have arranged to present the Premiers Cup on Saturday 7th December after racing.

HAYSTACK ISLAND OFFSHORE RACE

It was a blustery day on Friday 8th November as crews were gearing up for the first race of the CYCSA offshore series. The forecast was for strong winds overnight and continuing into Saturday, so we were hopeful of a fast race but we knew that it wasn’t going to be easy.

The fleet got started at 7pm and the first leg (approx. 40nm) to Marion Reef was a long port tack, sailed in 20-25 knots at around 45-60 degrees true. Conditions eased a little after we rounded Marion reef (a little too close for comfort!) and the next leg across the foot of Yorke Peninsula (48 nm) was sailed in 1820 knots at 65-80 degrees true so we peeled to a lighter jib. There was a reasonable swell both coming across the gulf and across the foot and three of our crew were experiencing seasickness. The lasagna dinner was not appreciated by all!

The night was cold and wet and we changed briefly to our code zero as the wind eased to the mid-teens.

As dawn was approaching we saw that Two True was hot on our tail, still carrying their code zero and crossing behind us. At that stage we preferred to continue along the rhumb line with a cracked jib, however there was little separating us. Shining Sea and Aikin were still in sight ahead of us and we all rounded Haystack Island just after dawn.

Finally on starboard tack, we sailed the next leg to Kangaroo Island with higher spirits as the seaway flattened out and we were able to enjoy some breakfast and warm up a little. We used our jib and code zero on this leg, finishing with a beat in to American River to round Beatrice beacon around lunchtime. By this stage we had put a bit of distance between ourselves and Two True and still had Aikin firmly in our sight.

Dolphins swam alongside us for a large part of this leg and also coming home up the gulf.

The last leg was a glamour run up the gulf: 60nm of 15-20 knots under spinnaker with the sun shining.

“Just like in the brochure” as we say. Over this leg the fleet spread out and it was more difficult to tell who was where both in front and behind us. The last 5nm the breeze went forward and we peeled to our asymmetrical kite, getting the Concubine up to 17 knots of boat speed! The tack fitting on our prodder decided to give up under the load so there were a few tense moments before the tack was repositioned using brute strength, but not before some minor damage was sustained to the pulpit.

We crossed the finish line in daylight after 23 hours and 52 minutes of racing and were able to enjoy dinner in our berth with a few cold beers. Although tired, spirits were high as many of our young crew have not done a lot of offshore racing. The tough night was made up for by a glorious day on Saturday. And it certainly was a nice change to do a Haystack Island race and be home for dinner.

As rookies in the game of offshore yacht racing we certainly learned a few lessons and have many areas to improve on, but were very pleased to chalk up a convincing win on IRC. Now we need to prove that it wasn’t just beginners luck!

AMS NEWS

As at the 23rd of November we now have 38 yachts with certificates. 24 yachts have applied during the last 4 weeks including Vulcan, Liesl, Dejavu, Liberator, Asylum, Blue Diamond, Quarante-deux, Aikin, Taniwha, Nina, Bolistic, Kinetic Energy, War & Peace, G-Wizz, Rapid 1 and Concubine. There are 21 CYCSA, 13 RSAYS and 4 PASC boats who have their AMS certificates.

This year the SportsMed Premiers Cup will include an AMS option in Division 1 and 2. Plans are now well underway for CYCSA to include AMS into the 2013/14 season with strong interest for a Division 1 and 2 Inshore series also a Coaster series. We will also be running an AMS State Championship Series for Division 1, with 10 expected entries, and Division 2 with 14 to 18 entries expected. It is great to see such a resurgence of Division 2 yachts back into a rating system. We plan to have all our series results in place by close of business sat 30th November.

In other good news, Port Lincoln Yacht Club have decided to include an AMS division in the annual Adelaide to Lincoln race and Lincoln Week.

CYCSA/RSAYS/PASC TRI-SERIES This series is a PASC innovation with the aim to improve the camaraderie between the 3 main keel boat clubs in SA. Comprising 6 Coaster races, the club with the highest placed 4 yachts on PHS will be the winning club on the day. Overall series points awarded each week to the clubs will be 1point for first, 2 points for second and 3 points for third. After 6 races the weekly results will be tallied and the club with the lowest total will be the Tri-Series Club Champion for the season. PASC have generously donated the weekly wine prizes and an overall perpetual trophy.

Race 1 was held on Saturday the 9th of November. The day offered some good sailing weather for the opening race with wind of 14 knots from 210 degrees at the start time of 13:15. The course for the first Tri-Series race was; start to wreck buoy (windward) to a mark near west lakes (reach) to lead out (shy kite) to finish (broad reach) course length approximately 15 miles. An excellent fleet of 30 yachts (12 CYCSA, 12 RSAYS and 6 PASC) had a clear start in some fantastic sunny conditions. During the race the sea breeze picked up to a steady 20 knots giving the fleet very exciting reaching and running legs. The fastest boat around the course was the multi hull, Time Warp in 1hr 52 mins. The first Monohull yacht home was 3 Cool Cats in the good time of 2hrs 11 mins. The first 22 yachts finished within 9 mins on PHS and the entire fleet were within18 mins. The Tri-Series result for race 1 went to CYCSA with Dr.Feelgood, Liberator, Kinetic Energy and Vertigo being the 4 boats with the best result. The Series scores after race one are, CYCSA 1 point, RSAYS 2 points and PASC 3 points. The next race in the series is on Saturday, November 30th.
