Our Winter Series presentation attracted a good crowd as we congratulated our winners and I thank Leica and her team at Port River Marine for their valuable sponsorship. We finish the Winter season by also recognising our Short Handed Series winners (see “results” section in this publication), we look to the upcoming summer season and have brought to your attention the rule changes and club requirements for future months. At our recent Skipper and Crew meeting we heard from Captain Doug Gow from Flinders Ports who once again highlighted the need for ALL yachts to keep clear of shipping movements.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Offshore R1 (Haystack)
Sat 9: Coaster R2
This year the Port Adelaide Sailing Club have approached us with the invitation to participate in a “tri series” event which will run in conjunction with our Coaster Series. PASC are providing the prizes for the tri-series and we look forward to a little inter-club rivalry out on the water this year. Once again this year we thank our wonderful volunteer duty crew who will facilitate our races with John Gibson and Ray Evans our Race Officers. I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful effort of Adrian Wilson who recently attended a YA seminar and is currently training as a race officer. We would love to extend our volunteer duty crew pool and at the S&C meeting I highlighted once again that we would welcome anyone who might wish to take on a backup role aboard CYC1 or CYC2 during the upcoming season. Having a pool of knowledge ensures the smooth running of future racing at the club so if you can spare a day to join the boys and learn a role it would be most appreciated. In these challenging financial times our sponsorships have taken a bit of a hit, we’d like to thank Yalumba, Phil Hoffmann Travel, Sportsmed, Robert Oatley Vineyards, Canegrass Saltbush Lamb, Prescott Security, Port River Marine, EverettBrookes Jewellers and SA Life TV for their support. I urge all racing members to help us seek out new sponsors for the coming season. Sponsorship can be one race or a series of races and the cost can be as little as a few hundred dollars. Every cent counts. If you have any leads or suggestions regarding potential sponsors please let a REX member know. Some members have made comment about a requirement in the PLYC’s NOR for the next Adelaide-Lincoln Race. We have passed your inquiries onto the PLYC committee who will consider the matter and let us know if they may offer a dispensation option. We will keep you posted on this as the season unfolds. Jon Henschke is holding down the fort in the Race Office in Jess’ absence, I do hope you are all patient and tolerant as Jon learns the ropes, please be assured that if Jon is unable to answer your questions a REX member is always just a phone call away.

Finally, our REX committee for 2013/14 welcomes two new members, Adrian Wotton and Shevaun Bruland. Adrian and Shevaun join Roger Nicolson, Rob Sellick, William Strangways, John Gibson, Mark Hutton and I as the standing committee for this season. If you have any comments, advice, suggestions or complaints please address them in writing to the Race Office and the committee will deal with them in our regular monthly meetings. I hope to see you all at the Club to celebrate the CYCSA 40th Anniversary Opening Day. Register for the Unforgettable challenge and you can enjoy a little “eye spy” game during the sail past!

NEWS FROM THE RACE OFFICE
Welcome back to all the Racing Members! Over the Break The 2013/2014 season has officially begun with the first race of the series being raced this weekend gone. First of all, I must say thank you to everyone who was patient with me over the break. Unfortunately with Uni and other work commitments I was only able to get into the office once a week. Although this caused a delay on a few things, I hope you can all understand if I didn’t get back to you straight away. A New Season That being said, everything is back to normal and we have a lot to look forward to leading up to Christmas. With 5 series and 2 regatta’s all happening before Christmas, Summer racing is definitely back in the swing of things. The series that are going ahead are the Club Inshore, Coaster, Offshore, SA IRC State Championships Division 1 and the Phil Hoffman Travel Twilight Series 1. As well as the club series, the Queen of the Gulf on the 7th of December and the Premiers Cup Regatta on the 23rd and 24th of November are also being held before Christmas. Assistant Race Manager For all those who don’t know, I am filling in for Jess while she is on maternity leave. I am a full time University student and I will be working at the CYC casually. I will be in the office mainly on race days, Wednesday and Saturday, with the exception to some week days here and there. If you have not met me before, feel free to come in on race days and say hello, I won’t bite! I look forward to the upcoming races and meeting many more of you.
See you all around the Club soon, and safe sailing!

WINTER SERIES RACE 6 & SERIES WRAP UP
We mark the close of the 2013 Winter Series with another successful Port River Marine and Combined with all 6 races going ahead with a large fleet for each race. Many thanks are extended the Duty Crew from CYC1, CYC2 and Wilbur who managed to run all 6 races without any problems, leaving the Winter Series fleet very happy with the series. On the 11th of August, the last race of the Port River Marine & Combined Winter series was held. A fleet of 23 boats braved some cool conditions and began racing at midday. The Division 1 fleet started at 12:00 with the Division 2 fleet shortly behind starting at 12:05 in moderate winds of 8 knots at 350 degrees. A good clean race was had by all with the fleet all finishing within half an hour. Some very quick sailing by That’s Life in Division 1 saw them take first place for the final race in both the Port River and combined series, while some very fine racing from Cookie Monster and School’s Out in Division 2 saw them take out first place in their Divisions respectively. With some very tight series scores for both divisions, in particular Division 1 of the Combined Series, the results of Race 6 had a large impact on the outcome of the final pacing for both series. Crews from both CYCSA and RSAYS met at the CYCSA for the results where guests from both clubs racing committees joined the presentation to help award the winners with their prizes. Congratulations go to That’s Life and Rock On from the CYCSA who both took out first prize in the Division 1 and 2 respectively for both the Combined Series and Port River Marine series. Both boats were able to hold off some very good Squadron sailing to win the series. Thanks to all CYC boats that raced in the series this year, it will be one to remember! Jon Henschke

A QUESTION OF TETHERS
Please read the below information provided by Yachting Australia. We welcome any comments from our membership, please email the Race Office with your thoughts and we will pass them onto Yachting Australia. Special Regulations Interpretation 2 Tethers Issued XX October 2013 Question: Can Yachting Australia please confirm the intention and interpretation of Special Regulation 5.02 with respect to the requirement in 5.02.2 for Categories 1 and 2? Answer: The intent of SR 5.02.2 is to ensure at least 30% of the crew have tethers that provide the extra requirement of being able to hook on with a tether not longer than 1 metre. The intent of SR 5.02.2 is not for a boat to carry extra tethers exceeding the number of crew members onboard. Issue: In response to the example and specific questions raised by Yachting NSW, when considering a crew of 10, and subject to the tethers meeting all the other requirements of SR 5.02: a. 10 x ‘2-hook’ (not more than 2 metre tethers) plus 3 x ‘3-hook’ mid-point tethers – Satisfies and Exceeds SR 5.02 b. 7 x ‘2-hook’ (not more than 2 metre tethers) plus 3 x ‘3-hook’ mid-point tethers – Satisfies SR 5.02 c. 7 x ‘2-hook’ (not more than 2 metre tethers) plus 3 x ‘twin’ tethers – Satisfies SR 5.02 d. 7 x ‘2-hook’ (not more than 2 metre tethers) plus 3 x tethers not more than 1 metre – Does not Satisfy SR 5.02 e. 10 x ‘2-hook’ (not more than 2 metre tethers) plus 3 x tethers not more than 1 metre – Satisfies SR 5.02 f. 10 x ‘3-hook’ mid-point tethers – Satisfies and Exceeds SR 5.02 g. 10 x ‘twin’ tethers – Satisfies and Exceeds SR 5.02 h. 10 x ‘3-hook’ tethers plus 3 x any other tethers – Satisfies and Exceeds SR 5.02 i. 10 x ‘twin’ tethers plus 3 x any other tethers – Satisfies and Exceeds SR 5.02
Background: The tether and harness are essential pieces of safety equipment for prevention of man overboard (MOB). It is mandatory that tethers and harnesses be manufactured to comply with AS2227 or equivalent international standard. An additional tether or snap hook makes it possible to move about the boat whilst keeping a constant point of attachment to the yacht. People, who regularly move about the yacht, such as to the foredeck and mast areas, use this type of tether. The 1 metre line is also preferred by some helms people to keep them close to the helm-station. The Special Regulations require that for Category 1 and 2 races 30% of crew has an ability to be attached to the boat with two tethers not exceeding 1 metre and 2 metre. A list of allowable ways to meet the two tether requirement is included at SR 5.02.2.

SHORT-HANDED SERIES WRAP UP
In its second year running, the Canegrass Short Handed Series was again successful with 7 boats racing. The boats that were in the two-handed fleet were, School’s Out, G-Wizz, Carioca, Seduction, Take 5, Stockcar and Outrageous. Out of the 6 possible races, unfortunately the last 2 races of the series had to be abandoned due to too much wind for Race 5 and not enough wind for Race 6. However, even though 2 races were abandoned, the series was still a great success with all of the racers enjoying some good quality fun racing over the Winter. Thanks go to Canegrass Saltbush Lamb for donating a meat pack for the winner each week, as well as a meat pack or 2 for the after race BBQ. After each race, all the racers came together to enjoy some drinks and a BBQ which was generously donated by Canegrass Saltbush Lambs. Many thanks go to John Gibson, Ron Yeates and George Ottewell for their efforts on CYC2. Hopefully the Short-Handed Series continues to grow in popularity for the upcoming season. If you are looking to sail in the Short-Handed series be sure to let the Race Office know! Jon Henschke

CLUB INSHORE RACE RESULTS
The Summer Series got off to a great start with 34 boats on the water -- both 17 for the CYCSA and the RSAYS. The weather was perfect with 10/12 knots from 300 degrees. The course for the day was Long Fixed Mark. DIV 1 course was approximately 15 m long. With the fleet starting off Largs Bay to lead out to a mark 1.5 miles south of Point Malcolm to wreck buoy to lead out to finish. With 17 yachts in the combined DIV 1 start it was indeed hectic with Shining Sea pushing a few boats above the start boat then diving down to take the pole position. For a short time havoc prevailed as the fleet hailed one another. It was a good start by all with most yachts hitting the line on time 1315. White knight did a penalty turn shortly after crossing the line. By 13:40, 10 boats had rounded the first mark, quick spinnaker hoists had them off & running with Shining Sea leading the pack. At approximately 14:20 the leading group were rounding the mark south of Point Malcolm. The breeze had moved back to 335 & lightened to 7 knots so the next leg to the wreck buoy was hard on. At 15:10 Shining Sea rounded the last mark & running to the finish sailing the angles in the lighter winds. Shining Sea got the gun at 1530, followed home by Slipknot & Two True. The breeze continued to ease spreading the fleet out with Another Planet finishing 32 mins behind the leader. Div 2 sailed a similar course however the 2nd mark was off Point Malcolm. There were 17 boats in the Div 2 combined start at 13:20 and it was another aggressive effort by all. Good Company was a boat length over the start line with Dr. Feelgood & Rock On also well over. The fleet enjoyed a good course with the 10/12 knots at the start line hanging in there until 14:20 when it swung back to 335 & began to weaken. By 15:20 it was down to 6 knots. Dr. Feelgood the clear leader finished approx 15:28 just before another drop in the breeze. By 15:50 it was down to 4 knots & only 4 of our 10 starters had finished. The remaining 6 gradually came home but Flying Circus had the longest day on the water finishing at 1655 (3 hrs 35 mins elapsed time) William Strangways RACE 1 12 OCTOBER 2013 DIV 1 PHS 1: SLIPKNOT 2: SHINING SEA 3: VERTIGO

DIV 1 SA IRC STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS RACE RESULTS What a great way to start the new season! A beautiful day with sunshine and winds of 10-12 knots at 300 degrees. The course was approximately 15 miles long. With the fleet starting off Largs Bay to lead out to a mark 1.5 miles south of Point Malcolm to wreck buoy to lead out to finish. The start was hectic with Slipknot pushing a couple of yachts wide of the start boat then diving down to take pole position. Havoc prevailed with much vocal encouragement from the fleet of 10, who were on the line with 7 other Div 1 yachts. A very aggressive start by all and most hit the line on time at 13:15. Shortly after the start, White Knight did a penalty turn. By 13:40 there were 10 yachts around the first mark with their spinnakers up, being lead by Shining Sea. At 14:20 the breeze had moved back to 325 degrees making the run easier. Although Shining Sea had a good lead for most of the race, the next group of 6 or 7 yachts were close together. About halfway through the race, the breeze began to ease down to 6/7 knots and stayed N/W. Shining Sea rounded the last mark at 15:10 in about 6 knots of breeze. An excellent kite hoist had them sailing the angles on the way to the finish. With an elapsed time of 135 minutes, Shining Sea was 9 minutes clear of Slipknot who were followed by Aikin another 4 minutes away. The bulk of the fleet finished within 28 minutes of Shining Sea, however Taniwha was the victim of the fading breeze and finished 32 minutes behind the fleet. William Strangways

AMS NEWS
After the initial burst of interest back in May it seemed no one was willing to commit unless they knew who else was in the mix. On the 20th of September I had an application form from Kinetic Energy and Dr. Feelgood. At last the penny has dropped and applications have flooded in. As at the 12th of October we have applications from Another Planet, Outrageous, El Fideldo, Good Company, Cookie Monster, Such Is Life, Horopito, Young Einstein, Locomotion, Shining sea, Slipknot, White Knight, Carioca, Freedom and Vertigo. Carioca was the first to receive their AMS certificate. I expect that 3 Cool Cats, Take 5, New Morning III, Two True, Alliance, Peer Gynt and Arcadia will apply in the near future. It is only taking a couple of days to have the application processed and certificate supplied. We can easily get multiple series off the ground, all that is needed is the application form. I measured the Transom Width on about 40 yachts on the 22nd of September. Please contact me ASAP on 8296 3256 for any further info. William Strangways
