JULY 2010

DOWNWIND NEWSLETTER

Chairman’s Report……. Another busy month for REX. After eliciting feedback from racing members we have finalised our Racing Program for the coming Summer season. The Program will be ratified at our upcoming AGM. On the topic of our AGM at the end of this month, I urge you all to attend. We have received eight nominations for positions on the Racing Executive and, under our association regulations, a ballot on the night is required to select the next committee. Please take time to look at the nominees listed on the CYCSA website.

Diary Dates July 2010 Sat 24: Short-handed Short Course Race 5

Recently REX has implemented Standard Operating Procedures for Duty Crew/Volunteers and Race Day Procedures for our Race Officers and Racing Manager. As Racing Committee members, Racing Managers and Volunteers may change over time we believe it is important to document the requirements and expectations of all relevant parties in relation to the conduct of our races now and in the future. Wayne Coonan has brought to our attention that some recent changes to Department of Transport regulations may affect our racing members. It is perhaps prudent that all skippers and crews familiarise themselves with the information found at this link as, under these new regulations, many boats may not comply with the "Unprotected Waters" - now offshore 3nm - requirements. http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/safety/marine/marine_equipment/8to15.asp Essentially the list for unprotected waters is · one approved PFD Type 1 for each person on board

Fri 30: Racing Association AGM

· two suitable anchors with cables · two buckets with lines attached

Sat 31: Short-handed Short Course Re-sail

· a bilge pump / pumps to drain each compartment of the boat

Sat 31: Seafood Night

· one fire bucket, which can be the same bucket as for bailing water if that bucket is suitable as a fire bucket

· if the boat has an engine or cooking facilities: two fire extinguishers

· one life-buoy with line · a waterproof torch or lantern · a two-way marine radio capable of communication with onshore stations

August 2010

· two hand held red flares and two hand held orange smoke signals · four litres of fresh water

Sat 7: Short-handed Short Course Race 6 Sat 7: The Ice Breaker (PASC) Sun 8: Port Line Cup (PASC) Sat 14: Commodores Dinner Sun 15: Combined Winter Series Race 6

· the boat must be fitted with a suitable compass (liquid damped magnetic, or gyroscopically controlled)

Please take note of the above, most importantly the requirement to carry two anchors and a two way radio. As you will see on the Department of Transport link, there is an addendum stating that yachts leaving Gulf Waters are required to carry a V-Sheet. It was pleasing to see that the recent Winter Series race was able to start, and wonderful to see thirty yachts out on the water at this time of the year. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our AGM on Friday 30th July - Ensure that you have your say in the conduct of racing at our club by voting for those who best represent your views and interests.
