COMMON QUESTIONS: How do I know if I need an eye test?

Welcome

Whether you have digital eye strain, are experiencing blurred or changing vision, have headaches or eye pain, or require an ongoing assessment and management for a progressive eye disorder, it’s important that you get your eyes checked.

The Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia is one of Australia’s premier yacht clubs and caters for around 1,200 members with a diverse range of sporting and social interests.

How often should I get an eye test? For most people, it’s advisable to have an eye test every two years, but it’s best to attend earlier if any eye problems occur or if advised by your optometrist. How long does an eye test take? It depends on the patient, but a young, healthy person with no apparent problems should take around 20 minutes. Your optometrist will determine what clinical tests are needed to provide the correct information for new spectacles or contact lenses; if necessary, they might refer the patient for a medical opinion.

Located on the Le Fevre Peninsula at North Haven, the Club was incorporated in 1973. Situated just 5 minutes from Semaphore, 10 minutes from increasingly thriving Port Adelaide, and 15 minutes from West Lakes, the CYCSA’s location is both spectacular and convenient. To many, it remains a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The Club’s facilities are second to none, with magnificent marinas, hardstand berthing, a prestigious Clubhouse and outdoor patio facilities, plus all the necessary ancillary amenities. Port Vincent Marina, located 30 nautical miles across Gulf St Vincent on Yorke Peninsula is also very proudly part of the CYCSA and it provides a great facility for that region for both local members as well as an outstanding destination for Adelaide based members.

Specsavers West Lakes is open 7 days.

Competitive sailors, more casual sail and powerboat cruisers and keen fishermen are all proud to call the CYCSA home. There is a membership category to suit all. These include Senior Member, Club Member, Racing Member, Associate

Members (Family), Intermediate Member, Social and Youth Member. Only Senior Members are eligible to vote and own or lease marina and hardstanding berths. The Club also boasts the Marine Academy, offering an extensive range of training courses conducted by a fully-qualified and talented team of instructors allowing members to improve their sailing and powerboating skills. The Marine Academy also offers a number of more social and corporate opportunities to get people out on the water and into boats. Off the water, the Club has equally enviable hospitality facilities, with Admirals Bar & Bistro, the impressively spacious Horizons functions centre and the more intimate Kinnaird Room, which are available to members and for the public to hire for special occasions such as weddings, parties, or corporate events (subject to availability). The welcome at the CYCSA from both staff and members is warm and genuine and we look forward to seeing you soon.

About the Club The Club was formed in May 1973, when Adelaide businessman Malcolm Kinnaird mobilised a group of sailing associates. Four short decades on, it is scarcely conceivable how incredibly far the Club has come since that germ of an idea was first discussed in Malcolm’s living room. The genesis of the Club launched the formation of the entire North Haven area, transforming it from a coastal wasteland of marshes and sandhills, to a celebrated marina and suburban development.

The Club has provided the platform for thousands of people to enjoy their love of the water and among its many notable achievements is being able to celebrate three winners of the world-famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Mr Kinnaird, a former South Australian of the Year who sadly passed away in 2014, leaves many lasting legacies of which the state can be rightly proud and the CYCSA is among the most pre-eminent of these.

Marine Academy The CYCSA is extremely proud of the work of its Marine Academy, which is Adelaide’s only accredited cruising and racing yacht training centre. The Academy provides several recommended pathways for people who are just starting out on the water or looking to develop their knowledge and skills. The Marine Academy is also able to provide social and corporate team building experiences. This less formal and more fun approach is equally enjoyed by many that just want to get out on the water with friends or workmates to experience the thrill that comes with boating. The CYCSA Marine Academy’s aim is to increase the enjoyment, safety and knowledge of members and nonmembers for recreational power and sail boating and yacht racing. Courses cover all types and levels of boating, ranging from learning to sail a yacht, recreational or competitive sailing and learning to drive a power boat. In addition, courses are run teaching key skills such as navigating or how to operate a radio. Setting a New Course for Veterans with Invictus

Together with The Road Home, the Cruising Yacht Club of SA proudly offers an innovative program that develops veterans’ sailing skills while building their confidence and social connections. In collaboration with the Invictus Pathways Program - Setting a New Course - offers current or former serving Australian Defence Force personnel who have little to no sailing experience the opportunity to undertake a five day Accredited Royal Yachting Association sailing program. The course consists of a two-day Start Yachting component, followed by a three day live aboard sail component incorporating sailing in the Gulf St Vincent and several safe harbours around Adelaide. At the completion of the course, participants receive the qualification of Competent Crew, which enables to them to not only crew in a yacht but also work as a team to respond to unplanned events and make a safe passage home. Invictus Pathways Program Coordinator, Mark Reidy says: “This is an exceptional opportunity for veterans to challenge themselves, learn a new skill and experience the satisfaction and connection that comes from working as a team - it’s the one thing that many former defence personnel miss when they leave service.” For more information on CYCSA’s Marine Academy programs, including current course dates, or to book a course online, go to www.cycsa.com.au, phone (08) 8248 4222 or email the course coordinator at marine.academy@cycsa.com.au

WHEN

SUDDEN STRIKES CARDIAC ARREST

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) knows no boundaries.

• In Australia, approximately 30,000 people sustain cardiac arrest outside hospital and are treated by emergency medical services (EMS) each year. • An average of only 9% of its victims in Australia survive. • It can happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone, even young athletes. • Early defibrillation is the single most effective treatment for SCA. • Defibrillation within three minutes of collapse can increase the chance of survival to over 70%.

Heart Safe Communities

Creating safer places to work, live and play Mindray aims to create more Heart Safe environments across Australia by placing defibrillators in educational establishments, workplaces, sports and leisure clubs, public and communitiy environments - allowing you to simply, safely and effectively help someone save a life.

Be Ready

Be Willing

AEDs are designed to help people with minimal training use them safely in tense, emergency situations. They have numerous built-in safeguards and are designed to deliver a shock only if the AED detects one is necessary.

Calling 000 in the event of SCA is critical, as is performing CPR on the victim. But the chances of survival from sudden cardiac arrest fall by ten percent every minute, and the single most effective treatment for SCA is early defibrillation - providing a shock to the heart within the first three to five minutes.

Sadly, on average, only 9% of people who suffer SCA outside the hospital survive. But survival rates of over 70% have been achieved where automated external defibrillator (AED) programmes have been successfully implemeneted.

AED $1995

FREE Wall bracket or Cabinet FREE Delivery EIGHT Year Warranty 20 www.cycsa.com.au

Anyone with minimal training can use an AED to help save a life. Quick action by the first person on the scene can truly make a difference.

Be Able

Costing as little as a personal computer, and AED is easy to use and maintain. Having AEDs readily available in your leisure or sports club makes sense, and can be the difference between life and death for a victim of SCA. Remember, time to defibrillation, the most critical factor in sudden cardiac arrest survival, can be reduced if an AED is close by and can be brought to the victim quickly, and every minute that passes before defibrillation reduces survival rates by ten percent.

No matter where or when SCA strikes, early use of a defibrillator can help save lives. Clinical consultant & CYCSA member: Harvey Grantham on 0435 050 257

Berthing Facilities Few clubs are able to offer either the quality or choice of berthing facilities that are available to members of the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia. The Club has two marinas at North Haven, Marina East and Marina West, both conveniently located and offering secure access and storage. Additionally, our Port Vincent Marina on the beautiful Yorke Peninsula is just 30 nautical miles across the gulf from North Haven. It is not just its superb facilities that sets the CYCSA apart. Berth licence owning members have the unique flexibility over the title of their berths because of the Club’s freehold ownership of the land and water, a considerable benefit not enjoyed by many other marinas. Owners therefore have the opportunity to treat their berths similar to freehold assets and can lease out or sell their berths through the Club as their circumstances and boating needs change.

Marina berths are available in single and double pens and are serviced by power and water. Hardstand berths are serviced by power, water and a magnificent dual lane launch and retrieval ramp, all in a fully fenced, floodlit, security alarm-protected sealed area.

Highly secure, Marina West has access to onsite parking, protected berths and the unrivalled facilities of the Cruising Yacht Club of SA.

CYCSA Marina East has berthing for 240 vessels up to 22 metres and 150 hardstanding berths up to 12 metres. Marina East is serviced by the main Clubhouse and associated facilities.

The Clubhouse is the hub of the Club, with Admirals Bistro, a magnificent function room and adjacent indoor and outdoor bar facilities. These facilities are complemented by an undercover bistro area that overlooks the marina. Secure car parking, showers, toilets, workshop and slipping areas provide excellent facilities for members’ needs, while nearby services include transport, shops, chandlery, engineering and marine services. Visiting yachts are always welcome – simply call the office in advance on (08) 8248 4222 to arrange a berth.

www.cycsa.com.au

Marina West boasts 73 berths ranging in size from 11 up to 35 metres, reflecting the growing popularity of bigger boats and addressing the need for longer berths to safely moor large yachts and motor boats.

Quite simply, this state-of-the-art complex is Adelaide’s most desirable marina. A first-class amenities building is located at the top of the Marina West gangway. Facilities include television, internet access, shower and change room amenities and coffee/tea station. As with Marina East these facilities are fully fenced, floodlit, and security alarm protected, giving boat owners complete peace of mind.

MARINA PORT VINCENT

CYCSA Port Vincent Marina on the beautiful Yorke Peninsula is just 30 nautical miles across the gulf from North Haven. The 90-berth marina is a convenient cruising destination and the ideal way to optimise boat usage out of Adelaide, having all the hallmarks of a family summer holiday playground. A wide range of berth sizes are currently available for lease and purchase through the Club. Port Vincent Marina provides a safe, navigable harbour within easy walking distance to the Port Vincent township. The modern facility includes an amenities building, fully equipped laundry, secure berths, picnic and barbecue facilities and hotel deliveries and pick-up service. Enjoy brilliant fishing in some of SA’s most sparkling waters and beautiful white-sand beaches for safe family fun. To enquire about securing a berth at Marina West, or about berth size options or the extensive array of Club facilities, contact the General Manager or Berthing Administrator at the Cruising Yacht Club of SA by phone on (08) 8248 4222. Visiting yachts are always welcome - simply call the office in advance on the same number.

Slipping, Storage and Other Facilities The CYCSA has outstanding facilities for those looking to perform maintenance on their boats or wishing to store their craft out of water in hardstand berths. Facilities include a magnificent horizontal-lift slipway, large radial crane, a launch and retrieval ramp for the exclusive use of boats stored in our hardstand berth facility and access to a workshop and maintenance shed.

SLIPPING & CRANE WHARF

The Club is rightly proud of its slipping facilities. It has its own horizontal-lift slipway which can handle craft up to 20 metres and 25 tonnes. Adjacent to the slipway is the crane wharf with a fixed arm 1.6-tonne radial crane. The crane is for the use of members, staff and others that have been authorised to use this facility. In and around the slipway are substantial work bench and maintenance facilities. Club members receive discounted slipping rates* (conditions apply).

LAUNCH RAMPS

The dual lane launch and retrieval ramp within the Club premises ensures minimal waiting periods to launch and is for the exclusive use of members with boats stored in the hardstanding area. The Club also owns and operates the North Haven Public Boat Ramp. Fees paid ensure its maintenance for community use and provide increased financial support for the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia.

TRACTORS

For moving larger boats, the Club has a tractor available for use by members only. All members wishing to use the tractor are to be formally inducted in its proper use by a CYCSA staff member.

FUEL

Fuel is available seven days a week at the northern end of North Haven Harbour.

CYCSA HARDSTANDS

Hardstand boat storage at the CYCSA provides a safe, secure alternative to storing a boat at home. Available to Senior members of the CYCSA in sizes ranging from 9m to 12m, the hardstands are available for purchase or on a short to long-term lease.

OTHER FACILITIES

An outboard motor testing tank is provided on the eastern side of the cradle area. A sail drying facility is available on the eastern lawn adjacent to the barbecue area and sail storage facilities can be hired on an annual basis. There are also trolleys available for members’ use for transporting items to and from their boats and there are also a limited number of private storage lockers available for a fee.

Racing Association

AMS SERIES

Whether a supremely ambitious Olympic hopeful or a relative sailing novice still wet behind the ears, boat owner or not, the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia can offer you year-round competitive sailing at a level to suit. The experience of the sailors may differ greatly and their craft may come in all shapes and sizes and from all parts of the financial spectrum, but there is one constant that is guaranteed: the thrill and the exhilaration that comes with racing out on the water. Competitive racing comes in many forms, from the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race – the Club is proud to have three past winners among its ranks – which is as adrenaline-fuelled as it gets – right through to the far more laid-back Twilight Sailing that takes place on Wednesday evenings. Here, in truth, the post-race beer or glass of wine, Clubhouse banter and socialising forms as much a part of the enjoyment as does the racing itself. The Racing Association oversees all racing activities at the CYCSA. A comprehensive calendar includes Windward/Leeward and Fixed Mark course racing, Offshore, Twilight and Short-handed series, Ladies Helm events and Regattas. The fleet at the CYCSA comprises Division 1, Division 2, IRC and AMS divisions. Racing is conducted in Winter and Summer seasons on the following days:

SUMMER

Wednesday (Twilight Series from 1800) Saturday (Club Championship Racing from 1300) Sunday (Regattas only)

42

www.cycsa.com.au

WINTER

Saturday (Short-handed Series from 1300) Sunday (Winter Series from 1200) A large number of series are run throughout the season. As their name suggests, they consist of a number of races, with one point being awarded to the winner, two points for second and so on. Points are totalled up over the course of the series, with the victor being the sailor with the lowest aggregate score. Series reward consistent performers and the more frequent competitors are often allowed to discount their worst scores, provided they race in the stipulated minimum number of events.

Series raced at the CYCSA include: CLUB INSHORE SERIES

This series consists of a combination of windward/leeward and fixed mark courses over the course of 12 races for Div 1 and Div 2.

‘BRAVO SAILS’ COASTER SERIES

The Coaster Series consists of 6 coastal (Category 6) races, conducted during daylight hours.

OFFSHORE SERIES

The Offshore Series is made up of 3 races over 150nm and 4 races under 100nm. All Offshore Races are Category 3.

IRC SERIES

While all boats can compete under the Club handicap (PHS), an IRC division is also offered for Division 1 and Division 2. Boats competing under IRC may nominate for the elite South Australian IRC Championship. This series is open to all boats in the State who hold a current IRC and Category 3 Certificate.

An AMS division was established in season 2013-14 and is also offered for Division 1 and Division 2. Boats competing under AMS may nominate for the South Australian AMS Championship. This series is open to all boats in the State who hold a current AMS and Category 3 Certificate.

THE ‘PHIL HOFFMANN TRAVEL’ TWILIGHT SERIES

Twilight racing is extremely popular during the Summer season. The CYCSA offers two Wednesday Twilight Series - one before Christmas and one after. The Twilight Series is a great opportunity for novice racers and casual sailors to experience the thrill of competing in a large fleet. No spinnakers are allowed in this series, thus alleviating the need for experienced crew on board. Races start around 6pm and the evening culminates with a gourmet BBQ, presentations and prizes. Twilight Racing is a great opportunity to break up the working week and make some new friends.

‘PORT RIVER MARINE’ WINTER SERIES

From May through to August the CYCSA conducts the Port River Marine Winter Series. This series runs parallel with a Combined Winter Series held in conjunction with the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron. Typically, the combined Winter Series fleet sees 30+ boats out on the water every second Sunday. Race days typically start with a cooked breakfast on the Club patio, followed by the prize-giving after the race.

SHORT-HANDED SERIES

The Short-handed Series is run on sporadic Saturdays from May-August. Conducted as a Category 6 series it is open to boats crewed by two able persons 18 years and over. In 2012 the Racing Association introduced a Category 3 Short-handed Destination Race to Pt Vincent. The Short-handed Series usually ends with a few beers on the patio with the rest of the fleet. There are also a number of premier events and regattas throughout the season which are featured in more detail elsewhere in this publication. One other event worthy of note is the Commodores Shield, an interclub series for keelboat yachts on the register of the CYCSA and our neighbours, the Royal South Australian Yacht

Squadron (RSAYS). Results from three regattas - the Premier’s Cup, Queen of the Gulf and Great Southern – are aggregated and then comes the crunch: the losing Commodore has to present the Shield to the winning Commodore, after it has been suitably engraved with the name of the season’s winner. It’s fair to say this is one neither club wants to lose! Don’t worry if you don’t have a boat, you can still experience the thrill that comes with racing. Regardless of skill level, there are always plenty of opportunities for people who are interested in sailing to participate as crew members at the CYCSA, all you need to do is contact the Race Office to register your interest. A ‘Crew Available’ form can also be found on the website. Interested sailors fill in their details, alerting shorthanded skippers to their availability. For new sailors, the Twilight Series is the best series to ensure a position on a boat and meet skippers, though for those with a little more sailing experience, good crew are always in demand for the more competitive Summer Series and Offshore Series. Enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to learn are arguably three of the most sought-after qualities among beginners. There is no substitute for competitive experience, but new sailors can get a foot up by signing up for a course at our highly-regarded Marine Academy, which has a wide variety of courses available for those wishing to learn how to sail or improve their current skills. In 2020, the Club introduced the Memberpoint Application, which enables prospective members to sail at the Club and use the Clubhouse facilities after racing. Other benefits include Australian Sailing personal accident insurance for the day. A sort of ‘pay as you play’ scheme for would-be yacht racers, the CYC Day Pass allows prospective members to race as many times as they like for a nominal fee before they may decide to commit to the annual Racing Association membership. Details of current Racing Association Membership Fees can be viewed on the Club website, which also carries a CYC Casual Day Pass application form.

Regattas and Major Sailing Events As well as providing its members with one of the best club sailing calendars in the State, there are several standalone events that merit special mention and which sailors from the CYCSA, Adelaide and far-flung distant members of the sailing community have inked in their diaries every year. Highlights of the CYCSA racing calendar include the Queen of the Gulf Regatta, the Premier’s Cup Regatta, the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race, and the Great Southern Regatta. The ‘Yalumba’ Great Southern Regatta is held over a weekend and consists of two windward/leeward races and a long race. The event features some competitive racing, a barbecue and some great entertainment on Saturday night after racing.

The ‘Georges Family Winegrowers’ Premier’s Cup Regatta follows a very similar format to the Great Southern Regatta, again with two windward/leeward races on the Saturday and a long Inshore race on the Sunday. The Queen of the Gulf Regatta open to all comers is a single coastal race awarded on the basis of handicap results for both Division 1 and Division 2 sailors. Administered by Port Lincoln Yacht Club, the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race takes place in mid-February and sees some of the country’s leading yachts taking part. The CYCSA regularly hosts the briefing for skippers ahead of the race and several Club members take part in a field that can number more than 50 boats. Details and Notices of Race for these events appear on the Club website well ahead of time and are subject to change.

The Cruising Association is one of the most popular groups within the CYCSA. Their sizeable number is split almost equally between powerboats and yachts. The aim of the C.A. committee is to promote the enjoyment and use of yachts and power boats among all members of our Club. We do this by organising Cruise in Company events throughout the season, mainly on long weekends (weather permitting) to various local gulf destinations and enjoy a number of social events. Whether planning your first trip across Gulf St Vincent or that initial long-distance journey, fellow members are there for advice, support and friendship. This group environment is hugely enjoyable and if travelling with fellow members offers the reassurance to the inexperienced boatie that someone will be able to help out should things not go as smoothly as planned. There is no pressure to take on administrative duties within the group unless members wish to. There are enough willing committee members leading the way to ensure everything operates as it should, allowing others to just enjoy what it means to be part of such a large, friendly and welcoming group. Tasmania has proved to be one of the more popular regular cruise destinations and there has also been a very pleasant cruise to Kangaroo Island over New Year. Another of the popular cruises goes to Port Lincoln and is timed to coincide with the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race.

More experienced Cruisers often head off overseas and come back to recount their adventure to other members of the group. A popular event in the Cruising group’s social calendar is their regular barbecue, held on the second Saturday evening of the month from September through to May. It is a great opportunity to meet fellow sail and power cruisers and to share stories and ideas. All members and friends are welcome, particularly new members. This takes place in the CYCSA’s undercover barbecue area and is bring your own everything excluding the tables, chairs and barbecue, which are already in situ. The bar is always open should attendees prove thirsty and supplies run low! The Club enjoys an excellent relationship with our neighbours and regularly enjoy larger get-togethers with groups from other clubs.

POWER YOUR BOAT PASSION Because we know that you’re as passionate about the great outdoors as we are, here’s some quick power tips that will help you to get the most out of your adventure. Marine batteries are specifically engineered to resist vibration from wave pounding which is why they should always be used in boats. Don’t get stuck out in the water, ensure you have a fully charged battery before you head out. When not out on the water, ensure the battery is stored in a dry area and out of the elements for best performance. Is your battery loose in the carrier? This can cause premature failure of the battery.

OR WE CAN COME TO YOU!

But the most important tip of all is: don’t be a stranger. Our teams of Batteryologists are experts in keeping you powered onroad, off-road or on the water, so if you’ve got a question you can be sure they’ll help.

Fishing Association The Fishing Association of the CYCSA has a number of activities and functions during the year designed to satisfy Club members, from the keen trophy-seeking fishermen to those wanting family and friends outings.

Colour your world

For a small annual subscription members participate in most activities at no further cost. Several FA trophies are awarded on an annual basis. Winners are acknowledged with their trophies at the annual Boating & Fishing Showcase Party in November. One of the rules of the competitions is that members are required to supply a photograph with their fish and details of their catch as verification. This makes interesting viewing for competitive members when uploaded on the Club’s website.

B e s p o ke ha n d c raf te d d e si g ns co l o ure d by yo ur ima g inat i o n.

FA awards and prizes are also presented at the popular and fun annual FA Crabbing Day in February/March. There are regular ‘Come Fishing’ days organised for members keen to fish with others and regular pro-fishing charters are also arranged for the adventurous. The Fishing Association provides a large freezer for association members to store bait at the Club. Advice and assistance with boating and fishing related matters are always available from the Club’s fishing community via the FA committee. The Fishing Association committee is elected annually and welcomes interest and participation from all Club members.

Social Association The boating experience is only half the appeal of belonging to the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia. We are rightly proud of our sailing heritage at the CYCSA, but just like its racing calendar, the Club has an equally rich and varied program of social events. The Club has a Social Association whose aim is to arrange social functions at the Clubhouse that appeal to all members of the Club. These functions are a fantastic way for new members to meet other members and get involved socially. Regular functions include our Winter Quiz Night, the Children’s Christmas Party and a great end of year Christmas Bash involving all the Associations at the Club.

There is also our Commodore’s Dinner, a more formal occasion which has a history of being a lavish and spectacular affair. Other events pop up during the year depending upon the interest of Club members and often at the suggestion of members which gives everyone an opportunity to be involved.
