THREE OF the ten police officers involved in the vicious beating of two students were yesterday thrown off the force by majority decision of the Police Appeals Board, seven years after the incident. In April 2011, three months after the officers involved escaped jail at the criminal court, they were fined a mere eight days wages each by the Police Disciplinary Committee. This decision was appealed by the assistant chief as hopelessly inadequate. “The assistant chief appealed the sentence imposed on them as he considered it inadequate,” said police spokesman Andreas Angelides yesterday. It is practically unheard of for police to be kicked off the force in Cyprus. According to Angelides the Appeals Board judged that the three officers who were forced to resign yesterday had
held the “biggest share of the responsibility and participation” in the incident. Also in the ruling, the Appeals Board said the disciplinary fines handed down to another four of the officers – eight days wages – was also inadequate, and ruled that it be extended to include two years without annual pay increments, which are automatic in the public service. It judged that the original punishment in the case of the remaining three officers had been justified and that it should stand. The beating incident dominated headlines in 2005 after a 43-minute amateur video recording, leaked to Politis newspaper, showed the two students being repeatedly beaten as they lay handcuffed on the ground, by five plainclothes officers. These included four MMAD (Mobile Rapid Reaction Unit) officers and one female constable, after they were pulled over for a routine TURN TO PAGE 2

The eight, including the female police officer, received sentences ranging from two months to one year, depending on the degree of their involvement. The sentences were suspended for three years. Seven of the defendants had pleaded guilty to assault and causing actual bodily harm and the policewoman to deliberately failing to stop her colleagues from carrying out the offences.

RESIDENTS in various parts of the island enjoyed some respite from the scorching heat yesterday as showers broke out mid afternoon, bringing temperatures down to normal for this time of year. According to meteorological officer Stalo Papachristodoulou, temperatures shouldn’t reach higher than 37 degrees Celsius
inland and 35 degrees in the coastal areas until at least Tuesday. Referring to the brief showers, Papachristodoulou said “there is some instability in the atmosphere, which has led to cloudy weather, as well as light rain and even storms”. There could be more showers today and tomorrow, she added (Christos Theodorides)
Man remanded over rape of Larnaca boy Using the description given by the ten-year-old and that given by a member of the public, police acted By Poly Pantelides THE LARNACA court yesterday remanded a 34-year-old man suspected of raping a ten-year-old boy on Wednesday night. The Greek Cypriot, who was remanded for eight days, was caught around midnight yesterday when the police tracked down a man matching the description given to them by the boy as well as a bystander who allegedly saw him loitering in the area before the incident on Wednesday evening. The Palestinian boy was on his bike at around 9pm when a man on a motorbike forced him to go along with him to ‘show him his dog’. The man then took the boy to a rooftop and raped him at knifepoint. The boy – who had to walk from the scene of the rape to the Larnaca police headquarters and tell the police what had happened to him – is doing well, said the head of Makarios chil-
dren’s hospital, Costas Hadjicostis. Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said that “the police started intensive investigations resulting in the arrest of the 34-year-old from the moment a complaint was made”. “You understand that this is a very delicate issue so we will not say more,” Angelides said. The Cyprus Mail was told that the fact the man’s look was “distinctive” had helped police find someone matching the description. They now need to do DNA tests and have the boy confirm whether or not he recognises the suspect as his attacker. The police said the 34-year-old does not have a criminal record. On Wednesday night, “a very scared little child” was taken to Makarios children’s hospital in Nicosia. The hospital has a specialised team to treat physical, sexual and psychological abuses along with the help of a state pathologist, Hadjicostis said. He was doing better yesterday and the boy and his parents are getting
psychological support, Hadjicostis said. He said there is “a real increase of abuses” though he added that he had no statistics available. “We are dealing with a serious incident of sexual abuse, which is also an issue that blights Cypriot society,” child commissioner Leda Koursoumba said. She said that through visiting schools and consulting with children she learned that sexual abuse is “part of reality for today’s youths”. Sexual abuse incidents may be higher than those reported to the media and authorities, the association for the prevention and handling of domestic violence in the family said. People should report cases to the police so they can keep a record even when no further legal action can be taken, the association said. A free helpline is available at 1440 for information and support but it is not staffed around the clock.

Home ‘Worker stole coins from parking meter’ By Bejay Browne PAPHOS police yesterday arrested a municipality worker and his female accomplice for stealing coins from parking meters in Paphos. According to police spokesman Nicos Tsappis, the 47year-old Cypriot employee and his 25-year-old Romanian accomplice were placed on a four day remand order by the district court yesterday. They were arrested on Thursday afternoon. Tsappis said: “Paphos municipality performed checks of the parking meters in the town and discovered that the amount of money which should be in the meters didn’t tally up, they found that there was some missing.” While parking fees had increased, the money coming in was less, arousing suspicions. The arrests were made after a complaint was lodged with the police by an internal auditor at the municipality who claims that following an audit performed at various parking meters of the city, there was a shortfall. The police spokesman added that the 25-year-old woman, who worked at a betting shop owned by the municipality worker, had also aroused suspicions as she often deposited large amounts of money in coins at the bank. According to the state broadcaster the pair were caught when authorities placed marked coins into the machines, which were then found in the possession of the Romanian woman. Tsappis said: “The police are fully investigating this case and information suggests that this practice has been going on for more than one month.” State broadcaster said that more than €140,000 was deposited by the woman over the last two years. A press release issued by Nicosia police headquarters confirmed that the pair was under investigation concerning a case of conspiracy to commit felony and theft by an employee.
Tourist raped in Ayia Napa A YOUNG Norwegian tourist claimed she was attacked and raped in Ayia Napa in the early hours of Thursday. The 19-year-old told police she had been walking along the road from Ayia Napa’s marina towards Nissi Beach Avenue at around 4am, when she was attacked by a stranger, who forced her into a secluded coastal area and raped her. The teen was examined by state pathologist Nicolas Charalambous, who confirmed there were indications of rape, as well as cuts and bruises on her entire body. The man in question is still at large.
Ryanair confirms flight suspensions at Larnaca Authorities say the sides are still in negotiations By Natalie Hami CONFUSION over the situation with Ryanair increased yesterday when the airline said it was suspending Larnaca flights from November, yet was taking bookings for Barcelona on its website at least up until next February. The low-cost airline is currently in negotiations with the Cyprus Tourism Organsation (CTO) and airport operator Hermes. It wants to double the amount it receives from the CTO for promoting its Cyprus routes, citing increased fuel costs. However when asked yesterday, Ryanair’s Maria Macken sales manager for the Cypriot market, told the Cyprus Mail in an email that the airline would be suspending flights to and from Larnaca for the winter. “Due to a combination of high fuel costs and traditionally low fares during the winter we have had to suspend all routes during the winter 2012/13 season,” she said. She added that they were not looking at summer 2013 yet but would make every effort to ensure they return by working with the airport and tourist groups. Hermes Airports’ spokesman Adamos Aspris, said they were still waiting for a reply from the airline. “We were informed that they want to review it but we haven’t had their final positions to know
which routes will be affected,” said Aspris. Despite the confirmation from Ryanair on suspensions, flights to Barcelona Girona can still be booked throughout the winter from their website. However flights to Bologna cannot be booked from November. Flights to Brussels and Dusseldorf also cannot be booked throughout the winter other than a few at the beginning of November. Asked via email how it was possible to book flights to Barcelona given the suspension, Macken said: “Ryanair is unaware of any issues with booking flights on www.ryanair.com.” The Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) said this week they did not have the money asked for by Ryanair to keep it flying into Larnaca, putting in jeopardy the agreement that has been in place since 2010. CTO chairman Alekos Oroundiotis said it was not financially possible for the CTO. Questioned yesterday on the agreement made with the CTO, Macken said that they “never comment on rumour or speculation and cannot discuss confidential agreements”. But sources close to the negotiations told the Cyprus Mail that Ryanair may have come out and said that they were suspending flights as a way of exerting pressure during the negotiations. The sources said other airlines were waiting on Ryanair’s response so they could step in and fill the gap.

North fearing flood of ‘abortion tourists’ Terminations ban in Turkey could see women go north By Simon Bahceli FEARS THAT an impending ban on abortion in Turkey would send pregnant women flocking to the north for terminations grew yesterday after revelations that an Istanbul-based tourism company had begun advertising “abortion tours” to the breakaway state. The revelation appeared in Turkey’s Hurriyet, which reported that a company named Baracuda Tourism was being disciplined by the Turkish Travel Agents Association (TURSAB) for offering a product that was deemed “unethical, indecent and against Turkish tradition”. Arguments over whether Turkey will go ahead with plans to ban abortion on demand have been raging since a landmark speech by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May in which he described abortion as “murder”. Although his comments sparked outrage among women’s rights groups in Turkey
and the north, Erdogan remains committed to outlawing abortion on demand in his country. Currently a termination is legal up to the tenth week of pregnancy. However, during his May speech Erdogan said laws were being drawn up to ban or restrict the practice. No plans exist however to ban abortion in the north, leading to fears that women in Turkey with unwanted pregnancies would travel to the north of Cyprus to terminate. The north already caters for a Turkish market in fertility treatments and gender selection processes that are illegal in Turkey. Responding to an expected increase in demand for terminations in the north, Istanbul-based Baracuda Tourism recently began offering threenight stays in abortion clinics in the north for around €700. However, the firm’s hopes of cashing in on what it saw as a new tourism growth sector were dashed after TURSAB moved to discipline the company. TURSAB added that it had taken the issue to the
AUTO AIR PARK
Turkish Minister of Tourism Ertugrul Gunay and claimed the minister had “reacted sternly” and that he was “adamantly opposed” to the creation of an abortion tourism sector in the north of Cyprus. Turkish Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Irsen Kucuk also saw fit to comment on the issue yesterday saying he would not encourage the development of such a tourism sector. “If a person needs an abortion for medical reasons, that is not an issue for us, but that does not mean that we will restructure our medical provisions to create a new sector,” he said. Turkish Cypriot doctors, meanwhile, have also made their position clear on the abortion issue. Earlier, head of the physician’s union Suphi Hudaoglu warned that a ban on abortions in Turkey could lead to an “undesirable” flood of pregnant Turkish women heading to the north. “In the same way as the closing down of casinos in Turkey led to them relocating here, abortion clinics will relocate,” he said.
Currently, abortion law in the north is the same as in Turkey, meaning that up to the tenth week of pregnancy abortion is available on demand. For abortions after the tenth week, approval is needed from an “ethical council” of doctors. Hudaoglu also warned that any move by the Turkish government to implement a ban on abortion in the north as well as in Turkey would lead his organisation to apply to the European Court of Human Rights (EHCR). “No one should think that we condone or support abortion, but we are definitely against this right being taken away from women,” he said. Defending his business venture, head of Baracuda Tourism Cem Polatoglu said he had done “nothing illegal” and that once he delivered patients to the hospital, his company was not involved in the medical part of the tour. He said he believed the opposition to his venture sprung, not from moral outrage, but a desire among his competitors to put him out of business.

A LARNACA rabbi has set up a back-to-nature type school in the Famagusta area for Israeli teenagers who want to experience something different. “It’s similar to a summer camp for kids,” said Rabbi Arie Zeeve Raskin. The camp, which is mainly for teens aged 15-17, will be set up in an agricultural area in Achna, with the first students set to arrive in September - around 10 to 12 of them. They will stay for two to three months, according to Rabbi Raskin. “We want to give them something different…they will be taught stuff that they’re not taught at home such as English, it will fill in what’s missing,” he added. Rabbi Raskin also stressed the importance of what values they will learn by being out in the countryside: “They’ll be living together and with others, seeing farmers and appreciating what’s around them.” He described it as a refreshing change from their iPads and Facebook. Reports in the press recently however said that certain problems had arisen with the setting up of the camp in that particular area. Rabbi Raskin said the only problem was the fact that the site granted to them was close to a Turkish military post. “We’re not afraid though and we believe that the Cypriot authorities will act in the right way,” said the rabbi.
Rabbi Arie Zeeve Raskin He also said that because of the issue with the Lebanese terror suspect in police custody awaiting trial over potential terror attacks on Israeli interests, he had been receiving a lot of phone calls from Jewish people abroad concerned with the safety of the island. “Cyprus is a safe place to live in, a safe place to have your holidays and a safe place to invest,” said Rabbi Raskin. The project is a joint education programme between Israel and the EU, set up by donors in Cyprus and abroad.
Attack on two Russian tourists POLICE are investigating an attack on two Russian tourists, both 21, during the early hours of yesterday in Ayia Napa. According to police, the two women caught what they believed to be a taxi – in which there were two men - outside their hotel and asked to be taken to the centre of Ayia Napa. However they realised that the taxi was heading towards Paralimni and asked to be let out, which they were. One of the men then got out of the taxi and started following them. He then started touching one of the women and lifting up her skirt. When she resisted he lashed out and punched her in the face. She was taken to a private hospital in the area where she is being kept as a precaution. The second woman was not harmed.

Opposition has field day with semi-state blunder Side notes on list of SGO appointees causes a stir By George Psyllides THE government yesterday sought to play down its blunder of sending out an email to reporters with the names of the members of semi-state organisations accompanied with notes on their political affiliations and in some cases an evaluation of their ‘performance.’ The government on Thursday appointed the new board members whose names were released to the media late in the afternoon. But in addition to this list, reporters were also sent the list of the previous boards with the attached remarks. The apparent mistake prompted a storm of criticism yesterday, as the government tried to defend itself. “Political practices and procedures are judged by the result and not by some rough notes that usually accompany them,” government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said in a written statement. Beyond the political affiliation or beliefs of each member – for a couple there was just the word ‘cooperative’ -- the authors of the list included special remarks for some. One was described as ‘very positive,’ while another was deemed ‘negative.’ A member of another board
‘should go’ while another – apparently a member of AKEL – “didn’t show any interest for a long period and didn’t show up but when it was necessary he follow the party.” Stefanou said the fact was that the large majority of the members of the old boards had been re-appointed. “The boards include citizens from across the entire social and political spectrums of our country,” the spokesman said. The main criterion was the readiness and potential to contribute, he added, rejecting suggestions that the board seats were filled by AKEL supporters. “In fact, even these rough notes prove this,” Stefanou said. “People appearing to be unsupportive to the government have been reappointed, while others, who seem to be very friendly were not.” The opposition however was having a field day. “The government’s gaffe put AKEL’s dated mentality in the spotlight,” said DISY spokesman Haris Georgiades. He added that the administration’s only preoccupation is to sort out their own and the complete control of the semi-state organisations by AKEL. “While our country is going through the most difficult times and the economy is hanging by a thread they once more confirmed that they
Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said ‘rough notes’ were a usual practice have other worries,” Georgiades said. DIKO said the contents of the email were a political blunder that contradicted the principles of “political ethics.” But the party spokesman also criticised the fact that the government had not consulted DIKO on any of the appointments but he did add that those were the exclusive right of the president and the cabinet. Fotis Fotiou said the party was only represented with one member on the previous boards; now there were boards were DIKO was not represented at all, he said. Thursday’s email blunder was not the first by this administration. In June 2010, the secretary of AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou accidentally emailed the media his phone messages, which included details of a deal over who was being suggested for a senior public sector job. Specifically, Michalis Pittadjis called to inform Kyprianou that the brother of AKEL MP
Company boss in jail for not paying salaries FAMAGUSTA District Court yesterday sentenced a businessman to three months in prison and fined him an undisclosed amount for failing to pay his employees’ salaries. On top of the sentence, the man was also ordered to pay all the salaries due. The labour ministry’s labour relations department yesterday announced there had been a worrying increase in bosses failing to pay their staff. “(The department) will continue to criminally prosecute employers who, in violation of the Law for Protection of Salaries, make arbitrary pay cuts or don’t pay their employees’ salaries,” said the announcement. It added: “Through the complaints we receive and the inspections that are carried out, the phenomenon has taken on worrying dimensions”.
According to the department, a total of 4,397 inspections were carried out on workforces in the first half of the year, resulting in 378 cases going to court for various violations. At the same time, previous cases were ruled on, resulting in fines of over €104,000. “The Depart-
ment of Labour Relations would also like to note that the Law for Protection of Salaries demands payment of salary on a steady systematic basis, weekly or monthly depending on the case, and it doesn’t allow any arbitrary cuts,” the announcement concluded.

THE VAT Service is urging the public to seek receipts for any payments as it assessed the initial results of a number of raids on businesses on Thursday to combat tax evasion. According to VAT official Menelaos Georgiades, a number of teams visited businesses across the island to check the law was being followed. They particularly focused on whether receipts are being issued by businesses. “We are calling on the public to ask for a receipt. They must demand them,” said Georgiades. “We rely on what the businesses declare, so we depend on the public for the good of all of us.” From 10am on Thursday, VAT teams – comprising two officials – visited dozens of businesses to check the law was being implemented. More such surprise visits would be carried out again, said Georgiades. He said the initial findings of Thursday’s raids had unearthed violations, though no exact figures were released.

Property price fall ‘accelerating’ ‘The country is bankrupt and so are the banks, it’s simple’ By Poly Pantelides PROPERTY prices for buyers may be down but so are rents on apartments, warehouses and offices, the latest figures show. The latest index from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) shows “significant falls across Cyprus’ major urban areas, with prices and rents falling across all districts” in the second quarter of 2012. Over six months, the average rental price of a Nicosia two bedroom apartment went from €555 in March to €535 in June. In Limassol, rental prices for apartments went down from €502 to €479 in the same time period. In just three months, about €2,631 got shaved off the average buying price of a two bedroom apartment in Cyprus falling from €131,120 in March to 128,484 € in June. Compared to the second quarter of 2011, prices dropped by 10.2 per cent for apartments, 6.4 per cent for houses, 10.8 per cent for retail, 9.0 per cent for offices, and
12.0 per cent for warehouses, according to the RICS Cyprus property price index. “[Prices] are going down. The country’s bankrupt and so are the banks. It’s as simple as that,” said member of RICS Pavlos Loizou who is in charge of the RICS Cyprus index. “Eighty-three per cent of Cypriots own their home so we don’t really have lots of people who want to buy… at this point you have almost 11 per cent unemployment which means that people who want to buy are putting it off,” he said. Most investors in Cyprus and abroad, such as property developers who would have an interest in buying a property, are “also sitting on the fence waiting to see how they play it out,” Loizou said. If the state of the economy and property prices were the only thing concerning investors then they might be buying, Loizou said. What is going on is that no one knows if and what changes there will be in taxes and legal requirements. Cyprus is due to borrow money from its EU partners
The prognosis is not good for the property market, at least for the next 18 months or so, say experts and will be asked to restructure its economy and increase its income. Property developers cannot calculate what their income will be from renting out a property for the following year, since they might soon be asked to contribute a bigger proportion of their turnover, Loizou said. Or they might not. The point is that no one knows, “there are questions, e.g. are things playing out as they are in
Greece?” So what next for the following year or two? “Paphos and Famagusta have seen their prices drop for years. Nicosia and Limassol started six months ago so prices for them are dropping at an accelerating rate,” Loizou said. Nicosia – relying more on the state and the banks – will suffer more in the following year, Loizou said. “But the fact prices are falling is a sign the market is rebalancing,” he said.
“Between 2004 and 2008 when prices tripled we had just had a decade of stability and employment, banks gave loans out very easily. There was a state of euphoria, as if we were drunk,” Loizou said. Prices are adjusting to a long-term average, he said. Loizou said that when rent prices stop falling investors will know how much rent they will get from an investment and it will be a sign that offices are feeling robust enough
to pay rents. But it will be a year and a half before that, he said. Of course when it comes down to specifics, sweeping generalisations are useless, another member of RICS said. “The index is a mirror of what is happening now,” she said. However, unless investors feel they can track their property’s future, they will postpone making choices. And prices will probably continue dropping.

Hague laments Annan Syria quit move
But Hague (above) said Annan’s departure should not halt diplomatic efforts to secure agreement on Syria (EPA)
BRITAIN will increase support for Syrian opposition forces, William Hague said yesterday as he warned the resignation of peace envoy Kofi Annan was a “bleak moment” in efforts to end the bloodshed. The Foreign Secretary insisted the diplomatic approach was not dead and defended the UK’s efforts to secure international agreement, but accepted “other things” also needed to be done. “Given the scale of death and suffering and the failure so far of the diplomatic process we will, over the coming weeks, increase our practical but non-lethal support,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today. “It will not involve sending armaments.” Asked about reports that US President Barack Obama has authorised the CIA to aid the opposition forces, Hague declined to comment on any potential involvement of UK intelligence.
“I do not ever comment on intelligence matters, but I can say that we are helping elements of the Syrian opposition, but in a practical and non-lethal way,” he said. “We have helped them with communications and matters of that kind, and we will help them more.” Annan cited “finger-pointing and namecalling” in the 15-nation UN Security Council as one of the reasons for his decision to step down. Russia and China have blocked British-backed resolutions in the Security Council to threaten the Assad regime with global sanctions if it fails to halt the bloodshed in the 17-month uprising. There was little sign of progress on the issue in Downing Street talks between Prime Minister David Cameron and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
The two leaders said only that Moscow and London would continue dialogue. Cameron urged the UN to “ramp up” pressure on the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad and said Annan’s resignation showed his plan for a ceasefire to pave the way for talks on a political settlement had not worked. Hague said Annan’s departure should not, however, halt efforts to secure agreement. He added: “It is not dead, but you are quite right to say it is a bleak moment not only for the people of Syria but for our diplomatic efforts. Diplomacy has so far failed the people of Syria. “We do not give up on the diplomacy with Russia and with China; we will keep going with that as long as this situation continues, but we will have to do other things as well.”
Body found in missing oil executive case
Shafilea parents get life
Carole Waugh missing since mid-April By Arj Singh DETECTIVES searching for missing oil executive Carole Waugh have found the body of a woman in a lock-up garage in London. Waugh, 50, originally from Durham, has not been seen by her family since mid-April and concerns for her safety grew after a fraudster tried to sell her central London flat by posing as her brother. Scotland Yard said a woman’s body was found in a garage in Lime Court, New Malden, south west London, Thursday night. Earlier this week a 47-yearold man was arrested on suspicion of kidnap and conspiracy to defraud and subsequently on suspicion of murder. The suspect is in custody at a south London police station. A warrant for further detention was granted at Croydon Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Scotland Yard said. The body has not been formally identified and was taken to Kingston mortuary. A postmortem examination was to take place later yesterday. Waugh, of Harrowby Street, central London, was reported missing by her family on May 7 and had never gone missing before.
The last believed sighting of her was thought to be in central London three days earlier, but this was unconfirmed. To date, 10 people have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
INTERNET MEETINGS Detectives said Waugh, who previously lived in Libya, met men through a variety of internet sites including dating websites and were investigating the possibility that she might have been an escort. Detective Chief Inspector John McFarlane said on Wednesday: “Information has been received which has progressed this inquiry and we are now treating Carole’s disappearance as a murder investigation. “I am unable to go into further detail about the nature of the new information at this time. However, we now believe that Carole has not been seen alive since April 16. “Since that time, significant plundering of her estate has taken place to the value of hundreds of thousands of pounds. “In addition to a number of fraudulent transactions associated with Carole’s bank account, there are also a number of her personal pos-
sessions that currently cannot be located. “Today I am releasing images of items of Cartier jewellery, identical to that worn by Carole, which are amongst items missing from her personal possessions.” The missing items are a Cartier ring, a white gold bracelet, a yellow gold bracelet and a yellow gold necklace, which are all in the same style. The lock-up is in a row of garages behind two detached 1930s houses in a quiet street. The driveway leading to the garages was cordoned off this morning and a police community support officer stood guard. A white and a blue forensic tent were erected outside one of the garages at the end of the row. Matt Elcox, 17, who lives in a house in Lime Grove backing on to the area, said: “I was woken by the sound of police cars coming and going late last night. “I looked out of the window but thought it was just a stolen car or something like that, so went back to bed. “It is surprising because you don’t see much activity around the garages and certainly nothing suspicious.”
Britain’s personal insolvencies hit four-year low PERSONAL insolvencies have fallen to a fouryear low, despite the toughening economy, official figures showed yesterday. Within these figures, bankruptcies are at their lowest since 2003, with 8,088 bankruptcy orders made in the second quarter of this year, representing a 27 per cent drop on a year ago, the Insolvency Service report showed. The service said that bankruptcy numbers have been affected by the introduction of debt relief orders (DROs), which have risen to reach a similar level to bankruptcies for the first time. DROs, which were introduced in 2009 and are often dubbed “bankruptcy light”, reached a new high in the second quarter of this year at
7,956, an increase of almost 10 per cent on a year ago. Overall, there were 27,390 personal insolvencies in England and Wales in the second quarter of this year, a 10 per cent decrease on the same period a year ago and the lowest figure since the summer of 2008. Individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs), which are also included in the figures, were down nearly 7 per cent year-on-year to 11,346. Bankruptcy numbers have now been lower than IVAs for more than a year. Analysts have said the official figures are the tip of the iceberg for people struggling with debt, with an estimated six million households living on the edge.
To date, 10 people have been arrested in connection with the police investigation into the disappearance of oil executive Carole Waugh
A COUPLE who killed their “Westernised” teenage daughter because they believed she brought shame on the family were jailed for life today - nine years after the brutal killing. Iftikhar Ahmed, 52, and his wife Farzana, 49, were told they would both serve a minimum of 25 years in prison after a jury at Chester Crown Court convicted them of the murder of their 17-year-old daughter Shafilea. The trial heard that they suffocated the teenager with a plastic bag at the family home in Warrington, Cheshire, in September 2003. Shafilea’s father showed no emotion as he was sentenced but his wife sobbed loudly. Trial judge Mr Justice Roderick Evans told them: “Your concern about being shamed in your community was greater than the love of your child.” The judge asked them: “What was it that brought you two, her parents, the people who had given her life, to the point of killing her?” He continued: “You chose to bring up your family in Warrington, but although you lived in Warrington your social and cultural attitudes were those of rural Pakistan and it was those which you imposed upon your children.”

China to hold Gu Kailai murder trial on August 9
Kim tells neighbour: economy a priority
face trial at a later time. Political observers have said a failure to forge a unified stance on handling the divisive Bo case could affect the Communist Party’s focus on working out leadership changes that will be decided at the 18th national congress later this year. Bo, 62, was widely seen as pushing for a spot in that new leadership until felled by the scandal brought to light by his former police chief, Wang Lijun. Bo, also a former commerce minister, had used his post in Chongqing since 2007 to recast the sprawling, haze-covered municipality into a showcase for his mix of populist policies and bold investment and spending plans. Wang, 52, spearheaded Bo’s controversial campaign against organised crime, a plank in Bo’s barely concealed campaign to join the topmost ranks of the party. Critics said the campaign involved widespread abuses of police powers. But Wang said he came to fear for his own safety after a split with Bo in late January over allegations that Bo’s wife Gu was involved in the suspected murder of Heywood, sources familiar with the later Chinese investigation have said.
N. Korean leader signals possible economic reform plans
CHINA will open the murder trial of Gu Kailai, the wife of ousted Communist Party Politburo member Bo Xilai, on August 9, two sources said on Friday, a case at the centre of a scandal that has rocked the government and could bring Gu the death penalty. Both sources requested anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the case, and provided no other details. China only last week formally announced Gu’s indictment on charges of murdering a British man in November. Gu will face trial in Hefei, provincial capital of Anhui in eastern China, though she is accused of murdering businessman Neil Heywood in Chongqing, a southwest municipality that her husband Bo turned into a showpiece for his controversial policies. British diplomats have requested access to the trial. CNN reported that two family members would be allowed to attend and that the trial was expected to be speedy. Bo, who was dismissed as chief of Chongqing in March, has not been named as a suspect in the murder case, but he is separately under investigation by party authorities and could also

By Chris Buckley and Ju-min Park NORTH Korea’s new young leader has told chief backer China that his priority is to develop the decaying economy and improve living standards in one of the world’s poorest states, the latest sign that he may be planning economic reforms. Kim Jong-un, who took over the family dictatorship last December, has presented a sharply contrasting image to his austere father. He was shown most recently in public at a Pyongyang theme park with his young wife on his arm and riding a roller coaster in the company of a man reported to be a British diplomat. “Developing the economy and improving livelihoods, so that the Korean people lead happy and civilised lives, is the goal the Korean Workers’ Party is struggling towards,” he was quoted by China’s Xinhua news agency yesterday as telling Wang Jiarui, visiting head of the Chinese Communist Party’s International Department and Beijing’s key interlocutor with the North. Though the report offered no details, there has been mounting speculation that Kim’s one-party state is looking at reforms to help lift an economy dragged down by decades of mismanagement and international sanctions, and rarely far from famine. Those economic problems have been compounded by drought and then, last month, torrential rain and widespread flooding left nearly 120 people dead, damaging some 46,000 hectares of crops. That is equivalent to 2 per cent of the North’s arable land, according to World Bank data, and the damage
There is mounting speculation the regime of Kim Jong-un (centre R) is looking at reforms to help lift an economy hampered by decades of mismanagement and sanctions is certain to lower this year’s harvest, which even in good years is not enough to feed the population. In the face of broad sanctions over its missile and nuclear weapons programmes, the North has been forced to rely heavily on aid from its giant neighbour China, the nearest the ostracised state has to an ally. Any suggestions of strain in relations were brushed aside by the young leader, who was quoted a saying: “It is the unswerving will of the North Korean (ruling) party and government to continue (his father) Comrade Kim Jongil’s teachings of constantly deepening the traditional friendship between North
Korea and China across the generations,” Kim told Wang. It appears to be the highest level diplomatic meeting Kim has held since taking power over 7 months ago. In a sign he may be looking to emerge from such isolation, he has dispatched his head of parliament, Kim Yong-nam, to Vietnam and Laos, the North Korean KCNA news agency reported. Kim, in his late twenties, has sought to impose his own stamp on the top leadership of North Korea, and recently ousted Vice Marshal Ri Yongho, the country’s leading military figure, who was seen as close to Kim Jong-il. Kim Jong-un was named marshal of the army in a
move that cemented his power. He already heads the Workers’ Party of Korea and is First Chairman of the National Defence Commission. He is gearing up to experiment with agricultural and economic reforms after purging Ri Yong-ho for opposing change, a source with ties to both Pyongyang and Beijing told Reuters. Experts in Beijing say their government fears that economic malaise in North Korea could give way to damaging instability and torrents of refugees across the border in China, and Chinese leaders have long nudged Pyongyang to draw lessons from their own route to market economic reform.
Nuke energy wild card in general poll, which Japan Democrats likely to lose GROWING Japanese opposition to nuclear energy after the Fukushima disaster will be a wild card in a general election many expect within months, but politicians on both sides of the aisle agree on one thing: the Democratic Party is likely to fall from power just three years after its historic landslide win. A mix of conservatives, centre-left lawmakers and ex-socialists, the Democrats swept to power on a groundswell of hope for change in August 2009, promising to change how Japan is governed after more
than 50 years of almost non-stop rule by the conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Three years and three prime ministers later, critics say its pledges to reduce bureaucrats’ control of policymaking and pay more heed to consumers and workers than corporations were honoured mainly in the breach. “The Democrats did not sufficiently achieve their campaign promises in the past three years. So for them to return to the opposition is the most likely outcome,” Hajime Ishii,
an upper house heavyweight in Noda’s Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), said. Instead, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has pushed ahead a plan to raise the sales tax to curb massive public debt and fund ballooning social welfare costs. Legislation to double the sales tax by 2015 passed the lower house in June with the backing of the LDP and its one-time coalition partner as well as the DPJ, but that sparked a string of defections from the ruling party.
Keen for an early election, the LDP is threatening to submit a non-binding censure motion against Noda in the opposition-controlled upper chamber, which could halt deliberations, or present a no-confidence motion in order to force the premier’s hand. The DPJ still has a slim majority in the lower house, but that could evaporate if more defect. “The feeling is growing day by day that we cannot leave the governing of Japan to the Democrats any longer,” LDP Vice President Tadamori Oshima told Reuters.
Noda’s Democrats seem headed for defeat
India plans to send a satellite via an unmanned spacecraft to orbit Mars next year - govt scientist INDIA plans to send a satellite via an unmanned spacecraft to orbit Mars next year, joining a small group of nations already exploring the red planet, a government scientist said yesterday. A rocket will blast off from the southeastern coast of India, dropping the satellite into deep space, which will then travel on to
Mars to achieve orbit, the senior scientist said, asking not to be named because the project is awaiting final approval. A spokesman for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) based in the southern city of Bangalore would not confirm the mission, but commented generally on the ambitions of India’s space programme.
“After the Moon, worldwide attention is now focused on finding out if there (are) habitable spots on Mars,” ISRO’s Deviprasad Karnik said. ISRO scientists expect the satellite to orbit at less than 100 km (62 miles) above Mars. India’s federal cabinet is expected soon to clear the mission, according to media
reports this week that said the programme will cost about $80 million. The plan has drawn criticism in a country suffering from high levels of malnutrition and power shortages. But India has long argued that technology developed in its space programme has practical applications to everyday life.

World Violence intensifies after peace envoy Annan quits
Syrian youth play on a destroyed Syrian army tank parked outside the Azaz mosque, north of the restive city of Aleppo, (AFP)
By Hadeel Al Shalchi SYRIAN forces stormed the last rebel stronghold in the capital Damascus in tanks and armoured vehicles yesterday and blasted artillery at rebels in Aleppo, where the United Nations said the army was preparing a massive assault. The violence came within hours of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan quitting as international peace envoy for Syria, underlining the impotence of mediation efforts in the 17month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. A senior UN official said a long-expected army onslaught to take Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and economic hub, was imminent following a buildup of army reinforcements. The fighting in Aleppo has focused on the Salaheddine district, seen as a gateway to the city for the Syrian army. Rebels poured into Aleppo in July after being largely driven from the capital, Damascus, where they had launched an offensive that coincided with a bomb blast that killed four top security officials. The fighting in Syria’s two main cities has intensified the conflict over the past three weeks. Rebels told Reuters journalists inside Aleppo that they had captured a large police station after days of clashes. Rebel commander Abu Zaher said fighters had taken several police officers prisoner and seized weapons and ammunition. Other rebels said heavy fighting was taking place in Saleheddine, the main battleground district, where they estimated 20 civilians had been killed. They say 50 of their fighters have been killed
Army moves on rebels in Aleppo and Damascus there in the last several days. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said “acts of brutality” reported in Aleppo could be crimes against humanity. Both sides have accused each other of carrying out summary executions of prisoners in the city. UN member states voted overwhelmingly to condemn the Syrian government at a special session of the General Assembly that Western diplomats said highlighted the isolation of Assad supporters Russia and China. Russia condemned the resolution complaining that it was tantamount to a show of support for rebels fighting to oust Assad. Russian UN Am-
bassador Vitaly Churkin told the 193-nation assembly that the Saudi-drafted resolution “hides blatant support to the armed opposition.” Russia was among only 12 countries that voted against the non-binding text, which condemns Damascus and calls for a political transition. The resolution received 133 votes in favour and 31 abstentions. China, Iran and Cuba were among the dozen nations that voted against the resolution, which Western diplomats said had been intended to highlight Russia’s and China’s isolation for using their veto power in the Security Council to protect Assad.
In the capital last night, Syrian troops entered Damascus’ southern district of Tadamon with dozens of tanks and armoured vehicles in a push to win back the last rebel stronghold there, a witness and activists said. Activists said most of the district was under the control of government forces by early Friday evening. The army had been trying to enter Tadamon for more than a week but was pushed back by fierce resistance from the rebels. An activist said the troops had executed several people after entering the district. The account could not be confirmed. “Thousands of soldiers have entered the neigh-
bourhood, they are conducting house-to-house raids,” a resident, who did not want to be identified for security reasons, said by telephone. The fighting spread to Aleppo from Damascus after the bomb attack on Assad’s security headquarters in the capital on July 18, which killed four of the president’s senior aides and encouraged rebels to step up hostilities. Annan resigned on Thursday, complaining of “fingerpointing” at the United Nations while the bloodshed in Syria went on. His mission, centred on a peace plan and a ceasefire that never took hold, had looked increasingly futile amid escalating violence.
Clinton urges Sudan compromise to settle dispute over oil US SECRETARY of state Hillary Clinton has urged leaders of South Sudan and their counterparts in the north to quickly reach agreement on oil revenue and other pressing issues to resolve differences that threaten to reignite a decades-long conflict. Those disputes have led to clashes between the two countries which many fear could have an impact
upon the 2005 peace deal that ended what was then Africa’s longestrunning civil war. “While South Sudan and Sudan have become separate states, their fortunes and their futures remain inextricably linked,” Clinton said at a news conference. “Now it is urgent that both sides, north and

WORLD TODAY Envoy expelled by Belarus Belarus has expelled Sweden’s ambassador for being “too supportive of human rights”, it is claimed. Sweden’s foreign minister Carl Bildt said Sweden in turn has decided that the incoming Belarus ambassador will not be welcome. He also said two diplomats have been asked to leave the country. Bildt said Belarus’ government, headed by President Alexander Lukashenko, got upset because the Swedish ambassador had met with the opposition in Minsk. The expulsion comes weeks after a pair of Swedish activists used a plane to drop hundreds of teddy bears bearing messages supportive of human rights into Belarus territory. Lukashenko fired two generals over the incident. Mr Bildt, however, said there was no word that the teddy bear drop was linked to the expulsion.
Wedding ban condemned MISSISSIPPI’S governor has described the refusal by a predominantly white church to allow a black couple to get married there as “unfortunate”. Phil Bryant said the state should encourage the union of any couple - as long as they were a man and a woman. Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson say they were not allowed to marry at First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, a small town south of Jackson, last month. The Rev Stan Weatherford, pastor of the church, married the Wilsons at a predominantly black church nearby. The wedding was moved after some congregants at First Baptist told Weatherford they opposed allowing black people to marry in the church.

Business Spain inching to full EU bailout
Wall Street jumps after hiring data is released
SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy inched closer yesterday to asking for an EU bailout for his country, but said he needed first to know what conditions would be attached and what form the rescue would take. His comments, at his first post-cabinet meeting news conference since taking office last December, came a day after the European Central Bank signalled it was preparing to buy Spanish and Italian bonds but only after EU bailout funds were triggered and countries had asked for help. A source said separately that Spain would not decide whether to apply for several weeks. Buying bonds and providing aid would all be designed to bring down what have been prohibitive borrowing costs in the indebted countries. Rajoy said he was ready to do what is best for Spain, going far further than he did on Thursday when, during a press appearance with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, Rajoy three times declined to say whether he would seek the aid. "I will do, as I always do, what I believe to be in the best interest of the Spanish people," Rajoy said on Friday. "We still don't know what these measures are," he said, referring to a comment by ECB President Mario Draghi that the bank was examining non-conventional measures to defend the euro. "What I want to know is what these measures are, what they mean and whether they are appropriate and, in light of the circumstances, we will make a decision, but I have still not taken any decision," he said. A source familiar with Rajoy's thinking confirmed this possibility was actively being looked at and that Rajoy was ready to bear the political cost of a request.
S&P 500 on track to recover recent losses By Chuck Mikolajczak WALL Street stocks rallied yesterday after employers hired more workers than expected last month, putting the S&P 500 on track to recover all of the losses posted during its recent four-day losing streak. Data showed employers in July hired 163,000 workers, the most in five months and above expectations calling for an increase of 100,000 jobs. But an increase in the jobless rate to 8.3 per cent clouds the picture of what the Federal Reserve will do about additional monetary stimulus. The S&P 500 index had fallen more than 1.5 per cent this week before Friday's advance as investor hopes for further stimulus measures from the European Central Bank and US Federal Reserve were dampened and a trading error at market maker Knight Capital Group Inc (KCG.N) on Wednesday dealt another blow to confidence in market structure. "After everything that has been going on with Europe and central banker disappointment the markets were priced for disappointment and anything above a disappointment would get a positive response - but this number isn't good enough to fix the economic problem that we are in," said Ron Florance,
Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on August 2, 2012 in New York City managing director of investment strategy for Wells Fargo Private Bank based in Scottsdale, Arizona. "You'll need an excuse to fall off the top of trading range and bounce off the bottom it's a nice way to end a week of turmoil." The S&P 500 decline came after the benchmark index saw its best two-day run of the year to close out the prior week as ECB President Mario Draghi heightened expectations for more immediate action to contain the eurozone debt crisis when he pledged to do "whatever it takes" to save the euro. But on Thursday, he dashed hopes for quick rescue measures.
Knight Capital shares surged 20.2 per cent to $3.10 in volatile trade after the Wall Street Journal reported the market maker has told brokers that it has obtained a line of credit, which will allow it to operate for the day. The company is fighting for survival after a $440 million trading loss caused by a software glitch wiped out much of its capital. The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI gained 217.40 points, or 1.69 per cent, to 13,096.28. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX gained 24.75 points, or 1.81 per cent, to 1,389.75. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC gained 55.36 points, or 1.90 per cent, to 2,965.13.
Other data showed the pace of growth in the vast US services sector edged up in July to 52.6 versus the 52.1 reading in June and above analyst expectations for a reading of 52. Dow component Procter & Gamble Co (PG.N) advanced 2.6 per cent to $65.17 after the world's largest household products maker posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit and said it would repurchase $4 billion worth of its shares this fiscal year. money from subscribers, services aimed at businesses and advertising. NYSE Euronext (NYX.N) said new strategies and cost cuts should help the transAtlantic exchange return to growth next year after losses in its three main business lines forced quarterly income down a fifth. Shares advanced 2 per cent to $25.08. According to Thomson Reuters data though Friday morning, of the 405 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported results, 67.7 per cent have reported earnings above analyst expectations. RBS confirms it sacked staff over Libor scandal
These Bank of Cyprus rates for telegraphic transfer transactions (spot deals) apply to yesterday, but provide a good guide to today’s value against the euro.
ROYAL Bank of Scotland confirmed for the first time on Friday it had dismissed staff over an interest rate rigging scandal but the bank gave no indication whether it might settle soon with investigators. Reporting a drop in first-half operating profit, RBS said it was co-operating with governments and regulators which are investigating the role of a number of banks in the setting of Libor and other inter-bank lending rates. "I think that the regulators must decide how they want to deal with the situation. We will stand up and take any punishment that comes our way," Chief Executive Stephen Hester said. He said he believed the Libor issue had been a result of "wrongdoing by individuals" rather than a "systemic problem" within the industry. "The Libor situation is a stark reminder of the damage that individual wrongdoing and inadequate systems and controls can have in terms of financial and reputational impact." The Libor scandal has already cost the chief executive of rival Barclays Bob Diamond his job. RBS said it was being investigated by regulators in the United States, Britain and Japan and by competition authorities in Europe, the United States and Canada. It said it was not possible to measure reliably what effect the investigations would have, including the timing and amount of fines or settlements. Rival Barclays was fined $453 million last month by US and UK regulators after staff reported false

Tan Chi Min, Paul White, Neil Danziger and investment adviser Andrew Hamilton were sacked at the end of last year. None was available for comment. New details from court documents and sources suggest that groups of traders working at three major European banks, including RBS were heavily involved. Tan, the former head of delta trading for RBS in Singapore, was fired in November for allegedly trying to influence the banks' rate setters improperly. He is suing RBS for unfair dismissal, alleging the practice of traders providing input to rate setters was widely known among senior managers at the bank. Thomson Reuters Corp is the British Bankers' Association's official agent for the daily calculation and publishing of Libor. The Libor scandal has heaped pressure on Hester, who was appointed CEO four years ago to rebuild the bank and its reputation after a bailout in 2008 during the financial crisis. RBS, now 82 per cent-owned by the government, reported a first-half operating profit of 1.83 billion pounds ($2.8 billion), down from 1.97 billion in the same period last year. The bank made a statutory pretax loss of 1.5 billion pounds, which included a 2.9 billion pounds accounting loss due to a rise in the value of its own debt. In January, RBS finally abandoned ambitions to be a top global investment bank, bowing to pressure from the government to shut down risky operations and prepare for tougher international regulations.

Semi-state bodies are dens of party nepotism WHEN the legislature approved the law making the appointment of the boards of semi-governmental organisations (SGO) coincide with the presidential term, the president sent it back, refusing to ratify it. The change in the law, reducing the term of a board from 36 to 30 months and barring directors from serving more than two terms, was deemed unconstitutional by the president for reasons that remain unclear. The real issue was that President Christofias did not want the people he appointed to the boards now, to step down in March when a new president takes over and, by virtue of the new law, would be able to appoint new boards. He wants to keep his appointees in place for the full three years, more than two of which would be under another president. DISY, which drafted the law, claimed that appointments of directors should be made when a new president is elected as SGOs implement government policy. The row has nothing to do with the constitution or more efficient policy-making, but is all about control. Parties want control of SGOs so they can engage in nepotism, promoting and appointing their people. This has been the case for as long as CyTA, EAC, Ports Authority, CyBC etc have existed and is the reason they are ridiculously overstaffed and their workers grossly overpaid. The average cost per worker at these organisations is in excess of €40,000 a year, while for the CyBC it is close to €70,000. All parties want to offer appointments at these organisations, which are decided by the boards, to loyal supporters. When George Vassiliou was president he distributed the seats on the SGO boards among all the parties, which took turns to promote and appoint their own. This may have seemed superficially fair – it prevented parties from bickering – but it made a mockery of meritocracy and ensured most SGOs were badly-run, inefficient and crippled by high labour costs as unions were always satisfied. Needless to say, the proposal for the privatisation of SGOs by the troika was slammed by all the political parties, none of which is willing to give up these dens of party nepotism. Yesterday, the day after the government’s new appointments to the SGO boards were announced, all the political parties were hypocritically accusing the government of nepotism. This was not because they were opposed to nepotism, but because they were not allowed to practise it as well. We hope the troika will insist on the privatisation of the SGOs because it is the only way to put an end to the partysponsored nepotism that all the parties protest about when they are not allowed to practise it.

In the land of the blind, one-eyed man is king O
N EUROPE’S battered bond markets, Ireland has found it doesn’t take much to stand out from the crowd. Anaemic growth and slow progress towards stabilising its debt mountain have been enough to turn the country into the poster child for the periphery, the subject of a stream of praise from eurozone leaders scrambling for a good news story. To maintain the momentum Dublin needs to avoid slippage in growth numbers that are barely skirting recession and hope that European leaders follow through on promises of bold action. “Most of the numbers are pretty bad, there’s a depression in domestic demand and the banks balance sheets are still damaged,” said Stephen Kinsella, professor of economics at the University of Limerick. “But if you look at our yield performance next to Italy and Spain, you start to see Ireland in a more favourable light,” he said. “In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king.” Ireland’s surprise issue of medium-term bonds last week, the first by a country in an EU/IMF bailout programme, capped a stellar
Comment Conor Humphries and Lorraine Turner year in the bond market in which the premium investors demand to hold its debt over Germany’s shrank by 60 per cent. Ireland’s 10-year bond spreads over their German equivalent have fallen by 14 per cent in five weeks, outperforming all its peripheral rivals and falling back to levels last seen before it entered its bailout in November 2010. The crowning achievement of Ireland’s year-long bond market run, the issue of 4.2 billion euros of new debt last week, was at least as much down to external trends in the wider eurozone as to improvements in the national economy. “Bond market investors seem to reckon that buying Irish bonds at high yields is a good risk-return trade-off in a world that offers either paltry yields on safe-haven government debt ... or scary prospects of default on peripheral debt,” said John Velis, head of capital markets research at Russell Investments. “The Irish treasury authori-
ties are profiting from exploiting this sweet spot.” Ireland’s bond market surge has come despite mixed data on the economy. Gross domestic product shrank by 1.1 per cent in the first quarter. After posting growth of 1.4 per cent last year, the first in four years, the government expects a rise of 0.7 per cent for the year. Despite having the fourth highest unemployment rate in the eurozone and stagnant domestic demand, it is expected to be the only country in the eurozone periphery to post growth this year and next, according to a recent survey by Morgan Stanley. As Ireland’s outlook has improved in recent months, a deepening crisis in other parts of Europe’s periphery has heaped pressure on the continent’s leaders to consider previously taboo steps. Much of the recent fall in Irish bond yields followed a statement by European leaders that they will look at cutting the cost of Ireland’s bank bailout by October. A promise by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi to do everything needed to save the euro gave Dublin a shot in the arm on the day of last week’s auction, with
the head of the debt agency saying it boosted demand by 20 per cent. The country’s prospects now depend on promised concessions from Europe outweighing the drag which the eurozone recession is having on Ireland’s key export sector. Merchandise exports to the eurozone fell 5 per cent in the six months to June, but total exports were up 3.8 per cent. Another major risk is that the government will be forced to pick up the tab for large new losses on property loans at state-owned banks or the National Asset Management Agency, which is bidding to recoup 32 billion euros it paid for bad property debts. But with a four-year head start tackling its banking crisis, investors see the risks in Ireland as far smaller than those now emerging in Spain and Italy. “It’s on schedule, it’s on track, the idea and the plan is in place,” said Owen Callan, senior dealer at Danske Markets, a primary dealer in Irish bonds. “Other countries are much further behind, they’re still at the panic stage, particularly in Spain at the moment and they don’t really know how to fix this,” he said.
Wiggomania, Wembley and midway through the Olympics SIDEBURNS no longer conjure a picture of a plump Elvis in a shiny white suit, in Oxford Circus I spot a group of five young men with painted red side burns on their faces; in a national newspaper there are ones to cut out and stick on, and at the party shop in Brighton they have fake fur ones. Wiggomania has arrived. Bradley Wiggins, winner of the Tour de France and gold medallist of the Olympic time trial, has not only charmed the nation with his understated nonchalance, turning his back on the posh seat ‘prawn sandwiches’ as he called them in the Champs Elysees to crack a joke with the real fans, he has made sideburns cool again. He’s emblematic of a games in Britain which, against the odds, is defying the over-hype of the media, the over exposure of sponsors and the jingoism of

the organisers. Ordinary Britons have decided to play the games their way, which means supporting those competitors, regardless of the shirt on their back, who try their best whether they break records and win medals or not. There has been universal damnation of the American coach’s jibe of doping by a Chinese swimmer, upholding, in this country at least, one is innocent until proven guilty. There has been a disregard for Lord Coe’s

nagging about wearing things to promote the sponsors, and there has been a laid back approach after all the hysteria to security and travel. Of course, there’s been home crowd advantage, I was at Wembley to hear the roars for Bellamy but there were cheers too for the efforts of Senegal. What is clear about these Olympics from the eccentric and idiosyncratic opening ceremony with its underlying messages of support for the NHS and CND, satire and lack of pomposity is that they are reliant on grass roots support. People are fed up of seeing seats empty because corporate sponsors don’t use them; people are fed up of athletes having the glitzy superficial hype of Hollywood superstars. These games are bringing Britain back to earth: proving that medals come
with hard work and dedication, not the get rich quick mentality of reality TV shows. Nowhere was this more obvious than when Zara Phillips with her deliberate non posh accent, marking her out from the Royals as a common mortal, won her silver team event medal in the Eventing; or on Thursday when I saw British rowers beaten by the first ever team gold for rowing by the South Africans. A mixed race crew who got the loudest cheer of the day as the rainbow nation’s flag flew in the wind. There is a message sounding loud and clear: cheats don’t prosper and although winning is about putting in the hours, taking the pain and making the most of your talent, it’s still the taking part that matters. That’s why side burns are back in fashion, being cool means being a good sport.

Tiesto leads Forbes highest paid DJ list with $22 million
Farrell totally recalls his unease about Total Recall
Top earners have global fan base
By Zorianna Kitt
By Piya Sinha-Roy ELECTRONIC dance music DJ Tiesto was named the world’s highest paid DJ this week, in a year when EDM has became a staple sound in mainstream pop music. Dutch DJ Tiesto, 43, real name Tijs Verwest, earned $22 million in the past year, fuelled by headlining sets at this year’s Coachella music festival and an exclusive residency at the Wynn Las Vegas, according to Forbes. com, which compiled the ranking. Tiesto, 43, has earned a global fan base with his brand of electro house music, and he teamed his 2009 album Kaleidoscope with a 15-month, 175 date tour, with many shows sold out. Los Angeles DJ Skrillex, 24, came second in the ranking with earnings of $15 million. The DJ, real name Sonny Moore, made waves by winning three Grammy awards this year with his debut album Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, a blend of dubstep, house and electronica. While the music industry has been suffering from lower sales, EDM has been steadily growing in the past year, with DJs performing more than 100 shows at lower overhead costs than bands or artists on tour. “What’s fuelling the DJ craze is that a lot of artists across all different genres realised they needed to put
Dutch DJ Tiesto, 43, real name Tijs Verwest, earned $22 million in the past year, fuelled by headlining sets at this year’s Coachella music festival and an exclusive residency at the Wynn Las Vegas more effort into live music as it’s so much harder to make money off recorded music,” Forbes staff writer Zack O’Malley Greenburg told Reuters. “Electronic music is ideally suited for the Internet age, the DJs never really charged anything for their music, their model was to give away music for free and make money from live shows, and with Twitter and Facebook, it’s so easy for them to spread their music around for free.”
Kennedys open up for RFK television documentary THE Kennedys may be America’s most famous political dynasty, but it took one of their own to get them to open up about their private lives and their place in US history. Film-maker Rory Kennedy, 43, the youngest of the 11 children of slain US Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and his wife, Ethel, persuaded her mother to give her first extended interview in more than 20 years for an upcoming HBO documentary that is also the first film about the Kennedys to come from within the family. Even so, it wasn’t easy. “Why should I have to answer all these questions?” Ethel Kennedy, 84, asks her daughter early in the film. “All this introspection. I hate it!” Ethel, to be shown on HBO on October 18, brings together rarely seen home video, photos, TV footage and anecdotes from several of the children of Ethel and Robert Kennedy. It traces the couple’s early courtship, life at home filled with dogs, horses and even a pet seal, and the political careers of President John F. Kennedy and Robert, who served as his brother’s attorney general. Both were killed by assassins. “I didn’t really want to do it mostly for personal reasons. I didn’t want to ask my mother and my siblings to go through some of the difficult moments that have been part of our history,” Rory Kennedy told television journalists this week. Rory Kennedy, who was born six months after her father’s death in June 1968, said she was persuaded by friends at HBO to do the film, and by the agreement of her mother and siblings. Asked where she drew her strength after her husband’s assassination in Los Angeles while running for president, less than five years after the November 22, 1963, assassination of his older brother, Ethel credited her children and her Roman Catholic faith.
Forbes.com pulled their earnings estimates from a combination of live shows, music sales, endorsements and merchandise sales figures. The ten highest-paid DJs collectively earned $125 million, more than the entire Los Angeles Lakers basketball team. “EDM, for corporate America, is safer than hip hop, it’s not controversial, it’s ready to project onto whatever you want, and I think that’s why we’re seeing sponsors flock
to it much more quickly than they did with rock and hip hop,” said O’Malley Greenburg. Swedish House Mafia, the DJ collective formed by Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell, came in third with $14 million, French DJ David Guetta, 44, notched fourth place with $13.5 million and Southern California DJ Steve Aoki, 34, earned $12 million to round out the top five. DJ Pauly D, 32, one of the
stars of MTV’s Jersey Shore, was a surprising entry at No.7 on the list, earning $11 million in the past year. Pauly D, real name Paul DelVecchio, used his rising reality star status to propel his music career, opening for Britney Spears at select dates on her 2011 Femme Fatale tour, earning a MTV spin-off show, The Pauly D Project this year and establishing a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
Mel B is accused of being a diva
Former Spice Girls member Mel B (2nd right, back row) says she ‘is always up for a reunion’
MEL B has been accused of being a diva ahead of the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony next weekend. The former Spice Girls member reportedly wants her loved ones to get special treatment as part of an agreement to possibly perform during the related concert. Sources told the Daily Star newspaper: “She wants her friends and family flown from all over to see the gig and wants them to have backstage access. The singer and reality TV star also has allegedly made a number of demands so she is personally comfortable in London, England. Mel B – who has lived in Los Angeles and Sydney since leaving her home of the United Kingdom - recently insisted there is no bad blood between her and the other Spice Girls, despite reports. The star nicknamed Scary Spice said: “We are friends. Even though I call them my bitches, I love them. I am always up for a reunion.”
TWENTY-TWO years after the blockbuster success of the Arnold Schwarzenegger action film Total Recall, actor Colin Farrell is stepping into the muscleman’s big shoes in a reboot, but if it seems like a dream job, Farrell initially was not so gung-ho. As flattered as the 36-yearold Irish actor was to be offered the part, he admits “there was a part of me that was honestly afraid of judgment of people” who held the original film so dear to their hearts. “Films to some of us feel sacrosanct and the idea of remaking something seems like an insult to the original when in fact it’s not,” he told reporters at a recent press conference to promote the movie. To cure his unease, the actor sat down with director Len Wiseman, talked about changes to the new movie and decided it was clear the makers wanted a somewhat different tale one with slightly less brawn and a bit more brain. “While honouring the same conventions and concepts and narrative plot points as the original story, this seemed to stand on its own,” Farrell said. The first movie in 1990 was directed by Paul Verhoeven and starred Sharon Stone and former bodybuilder Schwarzenegger who was then at the top of his action hero form. The sci-fi tale was loosely based on a story by writer Philip K. Dick and told of a man who goes on a “virtual vacation” in his mind to Mars only to find he is being hunted, and he must fight his way back to reality. Total Recall became a huge hit, raking in $260 million at worldwide box offices. The new film is also based on Dick’s story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale and co-stars Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston and Wiseman’s real-life wife, Kate Beckinsale. Farrell plays the same basic character, Douglas Quaid, who takes a vacation by strapping himself in a chair and going on a ‘mind trip’. As with the first film, science goes awry and Quaid soon finds himself hunted by police before teaming with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) who explains he’s really a super-spy working for an underground resistance. Key differences include one of his pursuers, a role played by Beckinsale is an amalgamation of two characters in the original, and Wiseman’s film takes place entirely on Earth. Still, some scenes pay homage to the original. Wiseman said he made a list of elements that stayed with him over the 22 years since he’d last seen the film, at age 14.

Apple seeks heavy penalty for Samsung lawyer’s behaviour
Amazon bidding for digital domination
By Dan Levine
Trying to get content on as many gadgets as possible
APPLE Inc asked a US judge on Thursday to punish Samsung Electronics Co Ltd for a Samsung attorney’s conduct by ordering that the South Korean company has infringed Apple’s phone design patents, according to a court filing. Trial began this week in high stakes litigation between the two companies. Apple sued Samsung last year in San Jose, California federal court, accusing Samsung of copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung has countersued. US District Judge Lucy Koh on Tuesday had barred Samsung’s attorneys from presenting some evidence during opening statements. Later that afternoon, Samsung emailed reporters links to that material, along with a statement that “fundamental fairness requires that the jury decide the case based on all the evidence”. Samsung attorney John Quinn, of the law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, acknowledged in a court filing on Wednesday that he authorised the press state-
ment, but said it was not designed to influence the jury. “The members of the jury had already been selected at the time of the statement and the transmission of these public exhibits, and had been specifically instructed not to read any form of media relating to this case,” Quinn wrote. Apple called his conduct “egregious, because it impugned the integrity of the court”, according to its legal brief on Thursday. Samsung spokesman Adam Yates said the company will be submitting a response. “Apple’s filing is baseless,” Yates said. A typical sanction for attorney misbehaviour is a monetary fine, but Apple is asking Koh to rule that Apple’s phone design patents in the case are valid, and that Samsung has infringed them. Those are issues that the jury has been empanelled to decide. The trial was set to resume on Friday. The case in US District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, No. 11-1846.

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY
By Alistair Barr AMAZON.com Inc is trying to get its digital music and video on as many gadgets as possible as the world’s largest Internet retailer replicates a strategy that paid off for its Kindle e-book business. The theory is that if customers can play and watch Amazon music and video on all their existing devices, they are more likely to purchase the content from Amazon rather than competitors like Apple Inc’s iTunes and Netflix . The latest example of this emerged on Wednesday, when the company unveiled a new iPad app that lets customers stream and download Amazon videos on Apple’s dominant tablet computer. Earlier this week, Amazon updated its Cloud Player digital music app and said it would soon be available on Roku Internet TV boxes and the Sonos home music streaming system. The app is already on Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch, Web browsers, smart phones and tablets running Google’s Android and phones running Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Developers and analysts say Amazon is likely working on new mobile devices of its own. But the company is also focused on getting its digital media apps installed on the massive base of gadgets that companies including Apple, Google and Samsung have already designed and sold. “A key objective is to sell more stuff, whether physical or digital. The way we do that is by looking at what problems customers have that we can solve,” said Bill Carr, vice president of digital music and video at Amazon. “They want to read books, listen to music and watch TV shows and movies wherever they are and they don’t want
The theory is that if customers can play and watch Amazon music and video on all their existing devices, they will spurn purchasing content from rivals like iTunes that to be hard work,” he added. Amazon dominates the ebook market partly because customers can buy once from the company and read the content through Kindle apps on devices including Apple’s iPad, iPhone and Mac computers, PCs, BlackBerries, Windows phones and smart phones and tablets running Android. Amazon’s digital music and video businesses have not had the same success. Around since 2007 and 2008, their market share is less than 15 per cent, according to The NPD Group. Apple’s iTunes store is the clear leader in digital music, with over 50 per cent of the market. Netflix is dominant in paid digital mov-
ie rentals, with 55 per cent of that market in the fourth quarter of 2011, said NPD. “It’s so much easier and frictionless to buy from iTunes and play the content on your iPhone, iPad or iPod - even if the content is more expensive than on other platforms,” said Atul Bagga, an analyst at Lazard Capital Markets. If Amazon can help customers access its digital music and video more easily through Apple devices and other gadgets, it may boost sales of that content, Bagga and other analysts said. “They’ve been battling for a long time and have not posed a significant challenge to iTunes yet,” said Ben Schachter, an analyst at Mac-
quarie. “But they are not giving up. They had success with the Kindle e-books strategy and they are hoping to do it again with music and video.” Amazon’s Carr said the company’s digital content sales have been rising fast recently. “The availability of our apps on multiple devices is a big part of that,” he added. Amazon Instant Video is available on Mac computers and PCs, Roku, Sony’s Playstation 3, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, TiVo and hundreds of compatible Blu-ray DVD players and TVs. The new Instant Video iPad app lets users stream or download films and TV shows from Amazon’s library, with over 120,000 videos to rent or buy.
MS revamps Hotmail as social-friendly Outlook
The jeep was credited for America winning World War II
Jeep makes its debut In 1941, Parade magazine called it “...the Army’s most intriguing new gadget.” The gadget was “a tiny truck which can do practically everything.” General Dwight D. Eisenhower said that America couldn’t have won World War II without it. The tiny truck was the Jeep, built at the time by the Willys Truck Company. Parade was so enthusiastic about the Jeep, that, on this day, it devoted three full pages to the vehicle.
MICROSOFT Corp unveiled a revamped, Facebook-friendly version of its free, online email service on Tuesday in an attempt to reverse market share losses to Google Inc’s fast-growing Gmail. The world’s largest software company is renaming its Hotmail service Outlook, giving it a sharp new look, social network links and new features for handling the tide of junk and mass mail that swamps many users. Hotmail was still the world’s largest online mail service as of June, according to the latest comScore figures available, with 324 million users, or about 36 per cent of the global market. But it is losing customers to Google’s Gmail, the fastest-growing rival, which now has about 31 per cent of the market. Yahoo Mail is static with about 32 per cent. In a bid to recapture growth, Microsoft is renaming the service Outlook, a name familiar to most corporate workers who use Microsoft’s Office email application, and sprucing up the whole experience. Hotmail users will be prompted to switch over to the new service over the next few months next few months. Hotmail, launched in 1996, was one of the first online email services, but it has not been updated by Microsoft for eight years. “A lot has changed in the last eight
years, and we think it’s time for a fresh look at email,” Chris Jones, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows Live, said in a blog post. The new look is clean and uncluttered, featuring lots of white space, reminiscent of Google’s recent makeover of Gmail. Relatively unobtrusive advertisements appear in a column to the right of the screen when looking at folders. They do not appear when a message is open. Users can link up with their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ accounts, to see the latest updates from friends and contacts. Online chat is available via Facebook. To help combat the overflow of newsletters, offers, daily deals and social updates which make up over 80 per cent of a typical inbox, the new service automatically detects mass messages and puts them in separate folders. The new mail service also allows easy use of Microsoft’s Internet-based products, such as SkyDrive for storing documents, Office Web Apps for working away from a PC and will eventually have Skype video chat built in.

Capturing a ‘true’ image Next Week Dance Folk dances from the Med Performers of traditional folk dances will add a festive mood to the heart of Limassol, when the Sixth Euro-Mediterranean Traditional Dance Festival gets under way next week. Organised by the Municipality of Limassol, the festival has established a cultural revival of the historical centre of the city and, with the cooperation of the local neighbourhood councils, will this year offer a touch of entertainment to the district of Ayia Gyla and Zakaki. Combining a vibrant patchwork of cultures with live music, performers, and authentic traditional costumes, the festivities offer local residents the opportunity to relax in the hot days of August and enjoy the colourful performances by the visiting folklore groups. This year spectators will get to see dance groups from Cyprus, Spain, Georgia, Italy and Greece. Take a moment to learn about these timeless traditions in movement, many of which you would never see on a typical day. It is vital to preserve and promote the rich folk dance forms that are abundantly found in societies. These cultural dances have been kept alive by our forefathers and passed onto the new generation. A festival such as this goes a long way to preserving, promoting and spreading traditional folk dances as a part of art and culture. The Open Ceremony takes place on Tuesday at 7.30pm. All the groups will-parading through the streets starting from the Limassol Municipality, moving on to Saint Andrew Street and ending at the Mediaeval Castle Square, after which Mayor Andreas Christou will welcome the groups. The Limassol Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra will also be providing some musical entertainment, and a performance with the participation of all groups will follow. On Wednesday night, all the groups will be at the churchyard of Panyia Chrisaifiliotisa at Ayia Fyla, while on Thursday an artistic programme will take place in the churchyard of Agia Varvara in Zakaki. The closing ceremony takes place on Friday, and if you’d like to catch a glimpse of all the groups parading, then just head to the Municipal Gardens of Limassol (seafront road) at 7.30pm and follow the crowds until the reclamation eastern side, opposite St Catherine’s Catholic Church. Sixth Euro-Mediterranean Traditional Dance Festival Five countries showcase their traditional and folkore dances and costumes. August 7-10. Ayia Gyla and Zakaki, Limassol. 7.30pm or 8.30pm. Free. Photographs from Maro Kouri’s archive. From left: India e-waste backstage, mushroom safari in burned Greece, Bangladesh shipbreaking yard and Roma below Acropolis
Acclaimed Greek photojournalist Maro Kouri will conduct Documentary Photography Seminars at the ARTos Foundation beginning on October 5. Fans of photography who seek to collaborate in a personal way with their subjects are invited to participate in either a masterclass, designed for professional photographers and photojournalists, or a workshop intended for amateur photographers with an appetite for creativity. This is a unique opportunity, as never before has such an intensive, challenging and intimate series of seminars taken place in Cyprus. Unfortunately, in Cyprus there is a lack of personalised instruction on visual storytelling for photographers who want to pursue documentary photography. There is very little information available for photographers to develop their skills and pursue a career in photojournalism. Photographers must find a way to learn documentary storytelling and how to penetrate the industry largely on their own. However, this all about to change as the ARTos Foundation, an organisation that’s always looking for new ways to embrace research and creativity, has put together a series of seminars to help photographers to hone the craft of visual storytelling, in collaboration with the production company Forest Troop. Founded in 2011 by Nina Maria Paschalidou, Forest Troop aims to produce and direct guerilla social issue multimedia stories and films and provide production services to a wide range of international clients. It aspires to give opportunities to documentarians who are not able to produce or show their work and spread their ideas by providing them with the knowledge and the means to do so. For those interested in taking their photographic storytelling skills to the next level, the upcoming seminars in October will help you improve both your documentary photography and how you’ll tell a story through those photographs. Documentary photography is the most compelling means of chronicling the
human condition. Rather than serving as a source of art or aesthetic pleasure, it is often used to capture the ‘true’ nature of an image or location. In simple terms, this school of photography uses pictures as documented evidence of a particular situation. The seminars will introduce the art of photojournalism through the development of different themes, such as the use of the camera, the art of photography, the significance of the ‘eye’ of the photographer, the production process of an assignment, research and use of sources, the ethos, the legal framework, in-the field psychology. Emphasis will also be given on the creation of a portfolio, the editing process of the photographs, the selection and editing of images, in order to be able to present a sample of work to the media, to photo agencies and exhibitions. The seminars will be divided into two segments. In the first section, participants will be taught the theory of photojournalism and will chose an assignment to work on during the week with the help of the instructor. In the second section participants will edit and present their photographs and will discuss and evaluate the result among themselves and with the instructor. Your instructor for both seminars is Maro Kouri, who has been awarded many international honours, including Life. com – 2011 Photos of the Year, International Photojournalist Award SCOOP and Photojournalist of the Year by the Greek Association of Photojournalists. It’s important to note that the seminars will be conducted in Greek and participants must bring a digital camera and a laptop with them to the seminars. All the necessary details about the seminars can be found on the ARTos Foundation site (www.artosfoundation.org). Participants must fill out the application form, corresponding to the seminar chosen, and send it to info@foresttroop.com, indicating the title of the chosen seminar (Masterclass or Workshop). While the seminars might seem far off, the dead-
line is September 10. In addition, each participant will receive a certificate and a documentary photography kit including the topics developed during the seminar. Documentary Photography Seminars Masterclass & Workshop by Forest Troop in collaboration with ARTos Foundation instructed by award-winning photojournalist Maro Kouri. October 5-14. Air pollution fouls Be By Ben Blanchard LUNG CANCER rates are rising among the 20 million residents of China’s capital, health officials say. For many multinational companies, Beijing is considered a hardship posting and, despite the extra allowances that classification brings, some executives are leaving. On some days, Beijing is enveloped in a brownish-grey smog, so thick it gets indoors, stings the eyes and darkens the sky in the middle of the day. Smoke from factories and heating plants, winds blowing in from the Gobi Desert and fumes from millions of vehicles can combine to blanket the city in this pungent shroud for days. Englishspeaking residents sometimes call the city “Greyjing” or “Beige-jing”. Some foreigners plan their daily events around the US Embassy’s Twitter feed on Beijing’s air quality (https:// twitter.com/beijingair), which has hourly posts. “On a bad day, you’re going
With its parks, centuries culture, Beijing should be capitals of the world. Inste the worst to live in becau to change your plans,” said American Chauvon Venick, who moved to Beijing from Los Angeles with her lawyer husband and young daughter earlier this year. “You wake up, look outside and it’s a great day, you skip whatever you’re going to do and go outside to enjoy it. If it’s a really bad day, maybe we’ll go and do something inside. “I’m not going to have her out and about,” Venick added, referring to her daughter.
While the embassy’s air quality index has been consistently in the “unhealthy” range around 170 in the past week, the winter months can be especially bad as residents crank up the heating. One day in early December, Beijing’s smog was so severe it forced the main airport to shut for several hours, and the US Embassy’s index reached its ceiling with a reading of 500, meaning the air was hazardous to human health. Last year, the state-run

China Daily quoted a Beijing health official as saying the lung cancer rate in the city had increased by 60 per cent during the past decade, even though the smoking rate during the period had not seen an apparent rise. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s liveability index this year ranked Beijing’s pollution at 4.5, with 5 being the worst. Out of 70 cities surveyed, the only ones rated worse were Mumbai, New Delhi, Karachi, Dakar, Dhaka and Cairo. Beijing has a lot going for it, aside from being capital of the world’s second-largest economy and home to UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Summer Palace and worldfamous cuisine. But the pollution has reached such levels it can be
hard convincing foreign executives to move to the city. “We can’t get people to move here. Pollution is a big worry, especially if you have children,” said a Beijing-based executive for a large Western financial services firm, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Beijing is considered a hardship posting nobody wants.” Those taking advantage include companies that make air purifiers, which report boomi ng business and count big foreign firms among their clients. “Sales last year were three times the average of what we had seen in previous years,” said Zheng Hui, a sales consultant for Swiss company IQ Air, which entered the Chinese market more than five years ago.
Chinese authorities made an all-out effort to improve air quality during the 2008 Summer Olympics, curtailing vehicle movements and relocating outdated, polluting

people to move is a big worry, u have children' diplomatic conventions, in pointed criticism of the US Embassy index. The Beijing authorities say they are well aware of the air pollution problem. “We are trying to improve
air quality. It is not only to attract investment from abroad; we are also doing it for the health of all Beijingers,” an official at Beijing’s environmental protection bureau told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. Elsewhere in China, there have been protests in recent weeks over threats to the environment. Last Saturday, officials cancelled an industrial waste pipeline project after antipollution demonstrators occupied a government office in eastern China, destroying computers and overturning cars. Earlier this month, thousands took to the streets in Sichuan province’s Shifang town to protest against a
$1.6 billion copper refinery they feared would poison their families. The city government swiftly called off the project. For expatriates in Beijing, especially from the West, air pollution is not the only challenge. English is not widely spoken, public transport is often crowded, food safety is a worry and tight controls on the Internet mean websites like Facebook and Twitter are hard to access. “For expat staff themselves looking to move here, the concerns they invariably express to me are: first and foremost safety of consumables and/or prevalence of fake and adulterated groceries, drinking water, pet food and so on, and then the high
fees associated with international schools. Pollution is mentioned, but only in passing,” said a consultant who advises foreign businesses operating in China. “However, that said, a number of clients and friends of mine are now angling to leave China after having been here a few years, and a major factor in that desire is pollution,” added the consultant, who asked not to be identified. Last week, Charlie Custer, Beijing-based editor-in-chief of the respected ChinaGeeks blog, announced he and his wife were leaving for the United States, partly because of the pollution. “I like breathing,” he wrote. “There’s really nothing forcing me to live in Beijing. It
is, in many ways, a wonderful city, and it’s probably the most fascinating, exciting place I have ever lived. However, it was also killing me. “Obviously there are millions of families in Beijing, and they deal. Certainly, we could deal too. But the question I couldn’t stop asking myself was, why should we?” It is hard to gauge exactly how many foreigners are leaving due to pollution as there are no official numbers. Yet the city and China generally remains an attractive place to live for many, especially as its economy booms despite turmoil in Europe and a slow recovery in the United States. “Beijing is obviously more
polluted and it’s not ideal, but senior executives or directors move jobs because of their career,” said Cater Yang, managing director for China at global placement agency Robert Walters. “The China experience will make their career shine more.” The people with some of the best knowledge about expatriate movements -- moving companies -- say Beijing keeps drawing in foreigners. “China’s certainly a popular destination,” said Nick Dobson, Corporate Services Manager North China for Crown Relocations. “We’re busier,” he added. “The rental market continues to rise, and the demand for quality expat housing is outrageous.”

Television PICK OF THE DAY Manhattan Murder Mystery (Novacinema2, 22.00) “Can a man love two women at the same time?” Woody Allen was asked recently (in a rather good interview on a site called the-talks.com). “More than two,” he replied. “I think you can. That’s why romance is a very difficult and painful thing, a very hard, very complicated thing. You can be with your wife, happily married, and then you meet some woman and you love her. But you love your wife, too. And you also love that one”. He should know, because that’s what happened to Woody in the early 90s - with the added, bothersome caveat that “that one” was Soon-Yi Previn, the teenage adopted daughter of his partner Mia Farrow. The resulting scandal nearly destroyed his reputation - but Woody did what he always does, which is to work steadily and imperturbably. He’s been making one film a year since 1971 - and the year after the scandal saw the release of a Woody Allen film, right on schedule, only of course without Mia Farrow as the female lead. In her place was Diane Keaton, Allen’s previous muse and romantic partner. In retrospect, it was good of Keaton to co-star in Manhattan Murder Mystery, making her support for beleaguered Woody very public (she hasn’t appeared in another of his films since). The film too is blithe and airy, almost self-consciously so, as if making light of the scandal - one of Woody’s fun-
niest, fluffiest entertainments, despite the word ‘murder’ in the title. There is indeed a murder (or is there?), an elderly neighbour having apparently disposed of his wife - or at least ditzy Diane is convinced of his guilt, even though the wife officially died of a heart attack. Diane’s husband Woody thinks she’s nuts but agrees to go along with her amateur sleuthing, spiced with the usual Noo Yawk banter and one-liners. Much of the pleasure here comes just from watching (and listening to) Allen and Keaton together; she was the best comic foil he ever had, her neurotic bubbliness a perfect match for his neurotic kvetching. “Well, listen, I think maybe I’ll go back to seeing my shrink -” she babbles; “You don’t have to see your shrink,” he interrupts, “there’s nothing wrong with you that can’t be cured with a little Prozac and a polo mallet”. The plot adds a touch of the macabre but the film fizzes along (it’s a lot like Scoop, Woody’s other comedy about murder), a happy surprise from a famously grumpy man. “Mr. Allen, do you believe that happiness in life is impossible?” asks the interviewer at the-talks.com. “This is my perspective and has always been my perspective on life,” comes the reply. “I have a very grim, pessimistic view of it”. You could’ve fooled us. Made in 1993.

Treasure Buddies (Novacinema1, 17.40) There’s a place and time for straight-to-video Disney fi lms about talking puppies - and that place and time, if we’re going to be honest, is probably Novacinema at 6 o’clock on a Saturday afternoon. The puppies (cuddly furry Golden Retriever types) ‘speak’ with the voices of annoying American kids and say things like “That’s fo’ shizzle!” or “Desert? I thought you said dessert!” - the desert in question being in Egypt, where the “buddies” (a.k.a. the talking dogs) go in search of ancient treasure in a kind of canine Raiders of the Lost Ark. Actually part of a franchise that’s become Disney’s biggest straightto-video moneymaker (previous entries include Snow Buddies, Space Buddies and Spooky Buddies), the audience for talking puppies being apparently almost as large as the audience for kittens doing cute things with balls of yarn - speaking of which there’s a cat here too, inevitably bent on world domination. “Why do they always make the cats the bad guys?” asks an unhappy cat-lover in the YouTube comments. Made in 2012.
Five Broken Cameras (CyBC1, 18.30) Another fi ne documentary tying in with the Limassol Documentary Festival - and 5 Broken Cameras is among the most high-profi le titles in the festival, having recently opened in the US to rave reviews. “For anyone who retains an interest in the human contours of the situation ... the movie is necessary, if difficult, viewing,” wrote the New York Times, the situation in question being the confl ict between Israel and Palestine. Emad Burnat is a Palestinian farmer protesting against a separation barrier being built by the Israelis which threatens to engulf his land - and the fi lm, shot over five years, is a kind of video diary, not just a polemic but also a vivid portrait of living in the midst of mayhem. By all accounts, a must-see. Made in 2011.

Bloodworth (Novacinema1, 22.00) “Whisky wasn’t my undoing. It was music,” says Kris Kristofferson in his honeyed-gravel voice, then strums a few notes on his guitar; “My bane and my salvation!”. Kris is Bloodworth, E.F. Bloodworth to be precise, who comes back to his home - a corner of rural Tennessee 40 years after having abandoned his family. “The wife he walked out on has withered and faded, his three sons are grown and angry,” says the synopsis; his only hope is his grandson, who tries to escape his cursed family, helped by the love of a good girl (Hilary Duff, of all people). A languid Deep South melodrama, focusing on family dynamics. Val Kilmer plays the youngest son, a womanising alcoholic. Made in 2010.

ARIES March 21 - April 20
LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
It won’t be until the start of next week until the Moon enters your sign, so until then you could experience a kind of need to go for it or pause, all at the same time. However, if you feel comfortable with the people around you, the chances are you will open up and the more exuberant side of your nature will come to the fore. So, who will you call?
If you find yourself taking more and more of a leading role, try to relish and enjoy it. Whether it is in the family, amongst friends, socially or at work, your vision can be in vogue. This may mean that you are thinking more long term, setting targets, and in general enjoying the ripples all this creates. Just be aware that there may be the odd glitch.
If you are discussing anything of a contractual nature, or about how to expand your horizons - a recurrent Archer theme, you do need to be utterly realistic about what is possible, and what isn’t. Fanciful ideas are all very well, but any flaws in your approach can soon be revealed. Don’t be tempted by any kind of shortcut. Be factual in all you say.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
In the next few weeks you might experience some confusion or uncertainty as to exactly who you can rely upon, especially around your circle of friends. But all this simply serves to encourage you to bolster your defences, both physically and in terms of your personal space. Seek to do so with activities and interests that boost your sense of self and wellbeing.
The Moon moves through your sector of relating. An interesting location at this time, because recently your ruler Mercury may have caused you to doubt yourself or to secretly worry that other people are not on-side, or harbour resentments towards you. Be assured, by the middle of the coming week a lot of such concerns can melt away. Good vibes beckon.
The bounce factor that the Sun and Jupiter have been providing continues to resonate in the heavens today. This may give you the spur to do something a little bit more radical when it comes to your lifestyle, diet and approach to your health. There is a sense that things are ripe for reform. Some more novel approaches could work out really well.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
Take a deep breath Gemini, for by the middle of next week, your guide planet Mercury will be surging forwards again, so try to be philosophical about the things that aren’t quite dropping into place. Yet, what you can appreciate are the benefits of extra physical activity, or taking part in bright debates. You can pick up some great tips from all this.
Both Mercury and Neptune remain in backward motion, and they form an obtuse but potentially tricky angle to one another through to the middle of this month. When it comes to commitments, be sure not to hastily pledge to help someone that given time, could prove to be a bind. Neither let a desire to be a “good person”, confuse your motives.
If your world is still reverberating to the Aquarius Full Moon of earlier this week, it would be understandable. But even if you have decided to call time on one association, there may still be some loose ends to tie up. If money or possessions are involved, double check everything is as it should be, don’t just assume it. Nor take an explanation at face value.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
The word “journey” is used rather a lot these days, but not necessarily in tandem or in terms of travelling from A to B. No, it is more the metaphorical journey we go on as we experience different things in life and perhaps not physical things. And there can be something of this for you now, and a springboard for developments for many months to come.
The Moon has progressed to a warmer more affectionate location in your solar horoscope, and with the Sun in a pronounced area, you can find yourself taking the lead more assertively in situations. If you’re wanting to make progress in terms of property transactions, Jupiter gives you a sense all will be well. Just don’t be too gung-ho Scorpio.
The Moon boosts your natural powers of perception, but you need to listen to whatever feeds back into your mind. You may have experienced some self doubts this week, and wonder if you are on the right track. Put the focus on spending time in the place, or with the people with whom you feel most at ease. This can help bolster your spirits.

Sport Rodgers impressed by battlers Liverpool manager wins first competitive encounter LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers praised the “desire and commitment” of his side following their 1-0 Europa League third qualifying round first leg win over Gomel on Thursday night. Stewart Downing’s second half strike ensured Rodgers’ first competitive match in charge ended in victory, and the Ulsterman was happy with what he saw at the Central Stadion in Belarus. “It will take time until Liverpool start playing the way Swansea did last season tactically,” he said. “Actually the way you play depends on the players you have. “As for today I saw two things which were very important for me, I saw desire and commitment. I am very grateful to my players for a good game. “Obviously it was a serious test of the players’ fitness and I am really happy with the result. “This was my first competitive game in charge of Liverpool and for me it didn’t really matter whether the game was played in Belarus or Brazil as I am really honoured to manage this side.” However his first match at the helm did not go all Liverpool’s way. The hosts, who are halfway through

Stewart Downing (right) gave Liverpool a 1-0 Europa League third qualifying round first leg win over Gomel in Belarus
their domestic campaign, dominated the majority of the game and were it not for poor finishing would have emerged victorious. Rodgers continued: “This game was a great test for us at this point of the season. Today we saw that Gomel is a very good club which is already into the season. “Their tactical idea was to defend and counter-attack so it was difficult for us to find the open spaces in the
first half but at half-time I told my players to be patient and that the chances would come. “After the first 45 minutes I also changed the structure of the midfield and Steven Gerrard started to play a bit lower than the other two central midfielders. “I am glad that Stewart scored the goal as we put him on that side to come in and shoot. It was a great shot.”
On the other flank, Joe Cole, who spent last season on loan at Lille, lasted just 23 minutes before picking what looked like a hamstring injury. Glen Johnson was also replaced a minute into the second half, but Rodgers was quick to downplay any injury fears. “The substitution of Glen was planned and as for Joe the injury is not serious and more of a precaution,” the
39-year-old added. Gomel boss Oleg Kubarev felt the result did not reflect the game. “I hope that we gave our city and our fans a great day,” he said. “It is a pity that we lost. The team played well and at least deserved a draw. “We are very upset but we can prepare for the next game even better and we are going there to give a fight.”
Fergie denies money motivation By Simon Stone
The Manchester United manager says everything he does is in the best interests of the club
SIR Alex Ferguson has revealed he would have left Manchester United if money had been his prime motivation. Ferguson has been stunned by claims the reason behind his recent praise of the controversial Glazer family was that he stands to gain from the forthcoming IPO. It was anticipated opposition to the IPO amongst Manchester United fans would be extensive when it was discovered earlier this week that the Glazers intended to use half of the proceeds - approximately £75million - to pay off the club’s massive £423million debt. However, attention quickly turned to a revelation within the official prospectus that senior management at Old Trafford would also profit from a “2012 Equity Incentive
Award Plan” share scheme. That led to some conclude Ferguson and chief executive David Gill - as the most obvious examples of senior management - would be amongst them. Gill is prevented from discussing the matter under IPO rules. Ferguson is under no such restriction. And, in defending his position, the United boss hinted that he could have earned more away from Old Trafford. “My decisions and beliefs are not based around what is best for my personal financial gain,” he said. “That is an accusation that insults me. If that was the case I would have left Old Trafford a long time ago.” Ferguson feared if the allegations of personal involvement went unchecked, it would erode the support he receives from the vast majority of Red Devils supporters after deliv-
ering a record 12 league titles. “In regards to suggestions that I have praised the Glazer family because I stand to financially benefit from the proposed IPO, there is not a single grain of truth in this allegation,” he said. “I do not receive any payments, directly or indirectly, from the IPO. “Ultimately, I run the football side of this club and in order to do this, you need backing from above,” he said. “The Glazer family have let me get on with my job, there is no interference or obstruction, only support. “I am speaking because I do not want a situation to develop whereby the media and other parties create a rift, however small, between myself and Manchester United. “I’ve spent 25 years of my life pushing this club forward and not only could I not have done that without those fans, I do it for them.”
ANORTHOSIS manager Ronny Levy was satisfied with his side’s performance and a 1-0 victory against Georgian side Dila Gori in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round match on Thursday evening in Tbilisi. “It was a difficult game for us against a strong opponent. We prepared really well for this game and tactically we were sound. We did not allow them to impose their style of play and as a result we scored a goal which was enough to win the game, but I think that we should have scored more,” said Levy. “Overall, I am pleased with everything I saw as we brought in several new players this summer and we will get better in the games to come,” he added. APOEL recovered from a goal down to beat Aalesunds FK of Norway 2-1 at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. “The game was as hard as I expected it to be. Their game plan was to have almost everyone behind the ball and try to hit us on the counter attack. It was something we expected,” said APOEL manager Ivan Jovanovic. “We need to be more patient when we have the ball. Once we conceded early on we did not respond positively. We missed a couple of chances before they scored and then had to push even harder when we were a goal down. The game in Norway will have a different feel and I do not see any reason why we cannot win over there,” Jovanovic concluded. Elsewhere, Neophtyos Larkou’s Omonia drew 0-0 against Serbian giants Red Star in Belgrade. “With this result everything stays wide open. We have to focus now on the game at our stadium and I believe that we have a good chance of advancing,” Larkou said. “In the first half we did not play that well, but after the interval we managed to keep possession for much longer and that brought us the desired result.” Red Star manager Robert Prosinecki did not share Larkou’s views though. “I think we were playing well and dominated proceedings. We were motivated and had no problem closing down their counter attacks. The only problem was our efficiency as we threw away several decent goal-scoring opportunities. We still have a good chance of progressing and we will give everything we have on Thursday in Nicosia.”

London transport faces test as athletics starts OLYMPIC spectators crammed into trains and formed long queues at London train stations yesterday on what was expected to be the busiest day for London’s creaking transport system as track and field competitions began at the main Olympic stadium. Europe’s oldest public transport network has so far coped well with the influx of Olympic fans but the start of the hugely popular athletics events - all taking
place at the new stadium in London’s Stratford district could pose new challenges. Almost a quarter of a million people were expected to descend on the area yesterday. The Olympic Stadium alone has a capacity of 80,000. Transport authorities called on Londoners to use alternative routes after the Central Line - a major link between the city centre and the Olympic Park - was partly suspended for
an hour due to a technical problem. “During the suspension we advised spectators going to Stratford to use the wide range of other lines serving the Olympic Park,” said a London transport authority spokesman. At King’s Cross station, one of London’s biggest hubs, there were queues of up to 100 metres for the high-speed Javelin train service, designed to whisk fans to the Olympic Park in
a few minutes. Fans of all ages with flags of various nations draped around their shoulders waited patiently while Games volunteers in purple uniforms directed the crowds. London’s transport bosses expect an extra three million journeys per day during the Games on top of the usual weekday total of 12 million on a transport network that dates, in part, back to 1863.

US Dream Team crush poor Nigeria in record spree Americans score an incredible 156 points as they set a new Olympic scoring record By Larry Fine
IN BRIEF
AN irresistible force met with a very moveable object late on Thursday night and the result was a recordbreaking scoring spree for the US men’s basketball ‘Dream Team’ over a hapless Nigeria at the Olympic Basketball Arena. The defending champions rolled to a 156-73 victory, scoring the most points ever in an Olympic game on a mind-boggling shooting night spearheaded by Carmelo Anthony. Anthony made 13 of his 16 shots, including an incredible 10-of-12 from beyond the three-point line for a 37-point haul. The points total easily eclipsed the previous record of 138 set by Brazil in 1988. The US halftime total of 78 points was also an Olympic record, officials said. “Every time that I touched it, the ball was going in as far as the zone that I was in,” Anthony told reporters. The entire US team, given a wide berth by Nigerian defenders, enjoyed an
extraordinarily accurate night of target practice as they made 71 per cent of their shots, including 29-of46 from long range, and 30of-37 from inside the arc. “We shot better than any team in a game I ever coached. Our guys just couldn’t miss tonight,” US coach Mike Krzyzewski said. His Nigerian counterpart Ayodele Bakare could only shake his head in disbelief at the US performance. “They shot an unbelievable percentage. I felt we could have played better defensively,” he lamented. The victory improved the US to 3-0 in the preliminary round while Nigeria slipped to 1-2. Kzyzewski bristled, however, when he was asked at the post-game news conference whether he felt his team had been cruel to humiliate an overmatched opponent. “We didn’t play LeBron (James) and Kobe (Bryant) in the second half. We benched Melo (Anthony) despite how he was playing. We didn’t play (Kevin) Durant. We didn’t take any fast breaks. There is a 24-
second clock. The shots we took, we happened to hit,” he said. “A coach would think it humiliating if we didn’t play hard. We just want to play hard and win.” Ike Diogu, who played six seasons with various NBA clubs, led Nigeria with 27 points. “When they shoot like this, I don’t think there is any team that could beat them,” Diogu said. Nigerian forward Koko Archibong said it was quite an experience being part of the game. “On the one side, it’s terrible to get whupped like that,” he said. “But on the other side it was something impressive to see, to be a part of, to witness in person.” In other action, two nailbiting finishes kept the pot boiling at the top of Group B. Russia squeezed past Brazil 75-74 to maintain their unbeaten record at the summit of Group B along with 2008 silver medallists Spain (3-0) who narrowly held off an inspired British team (0-3) to score a 79-78 victory.

Cyprus’ Stathelakos out of Indian gatecrasher regrets hammer competition her ‘error of judgement’ CYPRIOT hammer thrower Constantinos Stathelakos failed to make it through to the final after qualifying yesterday. The 24-year-old, who was born in the Greek city of Lamia, had a first round attempt of 69.65 metres and then recorded two illegal attempts in the following rounds. A throw more than four metres shorter than this season’s personal best of 73.85m was only enough for 16th place in qualifying Group B, which was led by Hungarian Krisztian Pars whose throw of 79.37m was the longest throw of the day. The final of the event is tomorrow evening at 10.20pm Cyprus time.
THE woman who gatecrashed India’s parade at the Olympic opening ceremony apologised yesterday for her “error of judgement” and said she did not breach security at the London Games. Madhura Nagendra, identified as a Bangalore student by local media, irked Indian officials in London by her unauthorised presence alongside flag-bearing wrestler Sushil Kumar. London 2012 chief Sebastian Coe confirmed her as a cast member and said she had been “slightly over excited”. “In an error of judgement I resulted in walking with the Indian contingent,” Nagendra told reporters in Bangalore.
A TURKMEN boxing referee and an Azerbaijani technical official were expelled from the London Olympics on Thursday after a night of controversy plunged the sport back into the mire. The focus should be turning to women boxers competing at an Olympic Games for the first time on Sunday but instead the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) has had to deal with the type of scandals that dogged it almost a decade ago. Turkmen referee Ishanguly Meretnyyazov and Azerbaijani International Technical Official Aghajan Abiyev were sent home with immediate effect, while a second referee, Frank Scharmach of Germany, was suspended. Meretnyyazov failed to stop a men’s bantamweight bout despite fighter Magomed Abdulhamidov being knocked down six times in the final round. The referee was expelled and AIBA said he was on his way home. Japan’s Satoshi Shimizu, who went into the last round of the bout against the Azerbaijani trailing by seven points, lost the contest by five when all three rounds were scored. The AIBA later overturned the verdict saying Meretnyyazov should have given the Azerbaijani “at least” three standing counts which would have resulted in the contest being stopped.
Powell complains over dope test wake-up call JAMAICAN sprinter Asafa Powell has complained to the International OlympicCommittee after being woken from his sleep for drug testing, the former 100 metres world record holder’s manager said yesterday. Manager Paul Doyle said Powell, who will run in the 100 metres heats today, was woken at 10.15pm local time on Thursday to undergo the test. “We love the fact that they are testing but we wish they would be more sensitive to his preparations,” Doyle said. “Less than 48 hours before his first competition, he lost a very important night’s sleep.”

Olympic Games Saudi's first woman bows out after symbolic Newest phenomenon has cheeky personality and jaw-dropping skills judo show
Flying Squirrel Douglas ready to take off after her heroics By Steve Keating WHEN Gabby Douglas arrived at the London Olympics all she wanted to do was meet Usain Bolt. But after the 16-year-old American added the Olympic all-round title to her gymnastics team gold, it might be the world’s fastest man seeking a meeting with her. Dressed in a shimmering pink leotard, Douglas dazzled a packed North Greenwich Arena with her cheeky personality and a jaw-dropping exhibition of high-flying acrobatics that heralded the arrival of the London Games’ newest sensation. By the time Douglas was wrapping up her evening with a floor routine, the gymnast nicknamed the ‘Flying Squirrel’ had the massive crowd on its feet and eating out of her hand, finishing with a playful wave before diving into the arms of her coach Liang Chow. “It just feels amazing to be called the Olympic champion, so much hard work, effort and passion and determination in the gym,” Douglas told reporters after claiming gymnastics biggest prize. “You have to push it every day. It definitely feels amazing. “The all-around matters to me. People keep saying I’m the first black American to win the gold medal and I’m so honoured.” Armed with cute nickname, a megawatt smile, a compelling back-story and two gold medals with maybe more to

Wow! 16-year-old American Gabby Douglas had the massive crowd on its feet and eating out of her hand come in apparatus finals, it is certain fame and fortune await the teenager when she returns home to the United States. The subject of a pre-Games article in Time magazine, Douglas shared the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Olympic edition with her ‘Fierce Five’ team mates but the first African-American to wear the all-round crown looks ready to emerge from the Games as a marketing dynamo. From Olga Korbut in 1972 and Nadia Comaneci in 1976
to Nastia Liukin four years ago in Beijing, each Summer Games seems to introduce a new precocious talent, an irresistible charmer who commands the Olympic spotlight leaving spectators spellbound by their gravitydefying antics. “I didn’t realise that,” said Douglas when asked about the endorsements and opportunities waiting for her. “I just wanted to seize the moment, you have to learn to seize the moment so it kind of hasn’t sunk in yet.”
Seizing the moment will also be on the minds of the men and women who will market Douglas as they try to capitalise on the fame that can be fleeting in the sport of women’s gymnastics. While it may seem so, Douglas did not just appear out of thin air to take her place as America’s Olympic sweetheart. Her dream like most was born out of a childhood fascination then fashioned into reality by years of numbing training in gyms, some far
away from her Virginia Beach home. Just 14-years-old but determined to be the best gymnast she could be, Douglas convinced her mother to let her move to train with Chow, a coach she felt an instant connection with after watching his interaction with US gymnasts at the Beijing Olympics on television. “I thought it was possible to make the Olympic team but when you look back now, it’s like wow, anything is possible.”
Chinese sensation Ye slams doping suggestions
Prodigy: 16-year-old Ye Shiwen has hit back at her critics
OLYMPIC sensation Ye Shiwen has hit back at a top American coach who suggested the Chinese swimmer could be using banned substances, telling state news agency Xinhua that John Leonard had acted unprofessionally. Ye, who won two golds at the London Games, set a world record in the 400 metres individual medley and shaved five seconds off her personal best, instantly raising questions given her country’s doping past. Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, said history showed that every time something “unbelievable” occurred in the sport it turned out ultimately to involve doping. While the United States Olympic Committee distanced itself from his remarks, and there was no evidence to show Ye’s performance was down to doping, the case kicked off a firestorm in China with many seeing the accusa-
tions as biased and racist. “The coach (Leonard) was not professional,” Xinhua quoted Ye as saying yesterday. “If a foreign swimmer achieved this result they may say it is a miracle,” the 16-year-old added. “I won’t be affected by any accusations.” Ye trailed world champion Elizabeth Beisel of the US after the penultimate breaststroke leg in her individual medley before producing a devastating finish over the final two freestyle lengths. The Chinese teenager covered the penultimate lap in 29.75 seconds, faster than record-breaking Michael Phelps in the men’s final, and the last in 28.93, quicker than Ryan Lochte did in winning the male equivalent. “How can I be compared with Lochte?”, Ye said. “His 400 result was more than 20 seconds faster than mine and he was totally relaxed over the last part of the race.
“I was trying my best to come from behind. Freestyle was my favourite in the medley but I still cannot be compared with professional men’s freestylers. “A freestyle turn is different from breaststroke-tofreestyle transition and the former is much faster than the latter,” Ye added. “It’s normal the last 50 in the 200 medley is slower than that in the 400 medley.” She said that now her Games was over all she wanted to do was sleep. “Because of doping tests and press conferences I went back to my room very late,” said Ye. “As the competition is over I can finally have a good sleep.” Writing on her Sina Weibo microblog on Thursday, Ye gave a sarcastic thanks to the Western media which had also cast aspersions over her successes. “A really big thanks to everyone for their support! Including the doubts from the Western media!”, she said.
AFTER days of controversy and hours of negotiation over whether she could compete in an Islamic headscarf, Saudi Arabia’s first female athlete to appear at the Olympic Games bowed out yesterday after 80 seconds. Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani, one of the two Saudi women chosen to compete at the Games, wore something akin to a swimming cap to cover her head in her +78kg last-32 judo defeat by Melissa Mojica. Despite the quick end to her Olympic adventure, she hopes her legacy will last for years. “I’m really happy to be at the Olympics and proud to represent the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and thank all those who stood with me,” she told Reuters. The shy 17-year-old looked ill at ease as she entered the arena in an ill-fitting judogi (a judoka’s white robe) that appeared several sizes too big. Her bewilderment was hardly surprising as she had never competed at an international tournament before. She smiled nervously as she walked to the mat to warm applause and cheers from the crowd at London’s Excel Centre. “I was afraid when I came out into the arena but I was happy when I heard the cheering,” she said. The brief fight was rather tame and appeared to be more of a cuddle with Shaherkani making no real attempts to attack her opponent. It ended when the teenager was thrown to the floor by the Puerto Rican for an automatic winning ippon. Having only taken up the sport two years ago and not yet at the black belt rank, her defeat was hardly surprising. Her opponent shook her hand warmly and there were more cheers from the crowd. As Shaherkani left the mat, she was then embraced by her brother, who gave her a lengthy hug. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had extended a special invitation to her and fellow female Saudi athlete, teenage 800 metre runner Sarah Attar, after it pressed Saudi Arabia along with fellow conservative Muslim nations Qatar and Brunei to end their ban on female participation. However, Shaherkani’s appearance at the Games was thrown into doubt last week after the International Judo Federation, the sport’s governing body, ruled that she could not compete wearing a hijab or Islamic headscarf because it would be dangerous.

US Dream Team crush poor Nigeria in record spree 30
Adlington stunned by 15-year-old Ledecky AMERICAN teenager Katie Ledecky pulled off a stunning upset in the women’s 800 metres freestyle final last night, ruining Rebecca Adlington’s hopes of providing Britain with their first gold medal in swimming at the London Olympics. The 15-year-old Ledecky, the youngest member of the American team, gave her rivals no chance as she led all the way to snatch the gold medal in a time of eight minutes 14.63 seconds, missing the world record in the longest event for women in the pool by half a second. Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia took the silver, her second of the Games after she finished runner-up in the 200 butterfly three days ago, but was more than four seconds behind Ledecky, who slashed more than five seconds off her personal best.
Adlington held on to win the bronze despite fading over the last 150 metres after she had tried to take the field up to Ledecky, who set off at a cracking tempo and was under world record pace for all but the last lap. Adlington ended Britain’s long drought in swimming champions by winning two gold medals in Beijing four years ago but finished third in both the 400 and 800 this time. Elsewhere at the Aquatics centre last night, man of the moment Michael Phelps, showing no signs of complacency after breaking every imaginable record in Olympic swimming, won the men’s 100 metres butterfly gold medal. On the eve of his retirement, Phelps provided an unforgettable reminder of his incredible talent and determination when he came from seventh at the
turn to overpower his rivals and win in a time of 51.21 seconds. South Africa’s Chad le Clos, who beat Phelps in the 200 butterfly final, deadheated for second with Russia’s Evgeny Korotyshkin. By winning, he joined his American team mate Missy Franklin as the only triple gold medallists in London and took his career tally to 21 medals, including 17 golds. Elsewhere, Florent Manaudou of France, the younger brother of Laure Manaudou, joined his famous sister on the top of the Olympic podium when he won the men’s 50 metres freestyle final to claim the title of the fastest man on water. The 21-year-old charged down the pool to get his hand on the wall first and win the frantic one-lap dash in a time of 21.34 seconds.

Federer wins record epic as Murray awaits in final Serena to face old foe Sharapova in women’s golden showdown By Martyn Herman

OGER Federer is one victory away from filling the last space in his creaking trophy cabinet after beating Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro in a four hour 26 minute epic to reach the Olympic men’s singles final at Wimbledon yesterday. The 30-year-old Swiss, who added a 17th grand slam title to his collection last month on the same Centre Court, survived a record-breaking scrap to win 3-6 7-6 19-17 in the longest men’s three-set match played in the professional era. The third set alone took an astonishing 163 minutes with Federer, who served for the match at 10-9 but was broken to love, claiming victory when his exhausted opponent fired an attempted backhand pass into the net. Federer won doubles gold in Beijing four years ago with Stanislas Wawrinka but had never previously reached an Olympics singles final. “It was a big match obviously. Very tough from start to finish. Juan Martin did so well to hang in there,” Federer, still looking fresh despite his exertions, said. “I got lucky in the second set to get back and then in the third it was so tough. I don’t think I have ever played as long a set in a best of three-set match. “Obviously I feel bad and horrible for Juan Martin but he can be very proud. I had a sense though that it was something special and it was cool to be part of a match like that.” Del Potro looked shattered as he talked to reporters af-
Marathon man: Roger Federer finally came out on top in the longest men’s three set match played in the professional era ter the match. “It is tough to speak now, I feel sad, but Roger made a fantastic match, he is a good winner,” Del Potro said. “When you lose you can’t see the good things. It hurts a lot to lose like that.” Federer struggled in the first set against the relentless power of Del Potro, who he lost to in the final of the 2009 US Open but has beaten consistently since. Del Potro dominated the baseline exchanges to take the opening set in 36 minutes and he remained in charge during the opening games of the second set as Federer hung on. With Argentine fans roaring their man on and cries of ‘Roger Roger’ resounding
around the court, Federer upped his game to win the second set tiebreaker. No one could have imagined what was to follow though. Serving second, Federer was always playing catch-up but the Swiss remained rock solid on serve, never once offering Del Potro a match point despite standing one game away from defeat on 12 occasions in the final set. When he broke the Del Potro serve to lead 10-9 it seemed Federer had the match in his hand but the opportunity came and went in a flash as the match extended past the fours three minutes it took Spain’s Rafa Nadal to beat Djokovic in the 2009 Madrid Masters semi-final. At 17-17 Del Potro wavered
again on serve to hand Federer a second chance. Federer fluffed an easy volley on his first match point but kept the pressure on and roared his relief when Del Potro netted to finish the match. In the second semi-final, Andy Murray rode the wave of British euphoria to reach the final with victory over world number two Novak Djokovic of Serbia. The Scot, roared on by a vociferous Centre Court crowd, won 7-5 7-5 to set up a repeat of last month’s Wimbledon final against Federer. Murray fed off the energy inside the arena, producing a scintillating display of shotmaking to leave Djokovic facing a scrap with Del Potro
for a bronze medal. He fended off everything Djokovic could throw at him in the depths of the second set, then pounced when the Serb served to stay in the match at 5-6, claiming victory with a dipping backhand that his opponent bundled into the net. In the women’s event meanwhile, American Serena Williams continued her romp towards a first Olympic singles gold medal with a 6-1 6-2 thrashing of world number one Victoria Azarenka after Maria Sharapova won an allRussian clash against Maria Kirilenko. Williams, trying to complete her full set of major honours, needed just 63 minutes to destroy the outclassed Belarussian. Russia’s opening ceremony flag bearer Sharapova won 6-3 6-3 to reach the final on her first Games appearance. Williams has been unstoppable on grass this summer. First she claimed a fifth Wimbledon title to secure a 14th grand slam title. Now she is on the verge of an Olympics singles gold to go with the two she won in doubles with sister Venus. The 30-year-old Williams, seeded four, has conceded only 16 games in five matches to reach the final. Standing in her way in today’s final will be Sharapova. “Well it’s incredible, not only to be part of this event and be an Olympian, but to put yourself in with an opportunity to go for gold. It’s a really nice feeling,” Sharapova said. “I’ve been really fortunate to win all the grand slams and obviously this is my first Olympics so I’m just thrilled to be in the final.”
Kontides has great chance of medal for Cyprus By Nemanja Bjedov FIVE-TIME world champion Tom Slingsby of Australia has moved ahead of Cyprus sailor Pavlos Kontides in the Men’s Laser event after a great second race on the fourth day of action at the Weymouth and Portland course yesterday afternoon. Slingsby now leads the overall standings with 23 points, five ahead of the Cypriot, who began the day in gold medal-winning position. Croatia’s Toni Stipanovic, who shares the same coach as Kontides, is third overall with 40 points. “It helps that I am acclimatised to the area and I have been preparing here so that I can perform as well as possible at the Olympics,” said the 22-year-old Kontides, who is currently studying in Southampton which is located only 80km away from the racing venue. In the first race of the day, Julio Alsogaray of Argentina sailed across the finish line first with a time of 56 minutes and 20 seconds, while Kontides and Slingsby ended 12th and 15th respectively. The Australian then dominated the 8th race of the event, winning it with a time of 57m and 28s, while Kontides could only finish seventh, which was enough for Slingsby to leapfrog the Cypriot into the overall lead. The competition continues today with the final two races of the regular program, with the medal race scheduled for Monday.
