Cards on the table at crunch meeting Government due to put forward its own proposals on exiting the crisis By Jacqueline Agathocleous
T
HE TROIKA will today finish up week-long negotiations at a crunch meeting with the ministerial committee on economic issues, where both sides are expected to lay their cards on the table. The government is expected to put forward its own proposals on cost cutting and increasing revenue, which are based on a milder longer-term approach than the nightmarish scenarios leaking out from meetings the team has held so far this week with officials and unionists. Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said yesterday the government would have a better overview concerning the island’s capital requirements following the conclusion of its meeting with the troika representatives today. The troika – delegates from the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund in charge of Cyprus’ request for bailout - will continue its meetings this morning with the head of the VAT Service, before going to parliament to brief the Finance Commit-
tee and then on to the muchanticipated meeting with the ministerial committee, which will take place at 3pm. No agreements or final decisions are expected to be made, though it has become increasingly clear that there is a vast difference of opinion between the government and the EU lenders – both on the amounts needed and the methods that should be used to acquire them. In contrast to the measures proposed by troika – which according to reports include steep pay cuts for public servants and a cancellation of the Cost of Living Allowance (CoLA) – the government is said to be seeking milder measures, which can be implemented in the long term. President Demetris Christofias yesterday held a low-key unpublicised meeting with the troika, while the leaders of the major trade unions met with Labour Minister Sotiroulla Charalambous, where they were briefed on the troika’s intentions. In his meeting with the lenders, Christofias reportedly said Cyprus wouldn’t be seeking assistance from the EU’s support mechanism if it

Fake snake tamer had spoken with forked tongue

AN Austrian applauded for capturing a 2.3-metre (7.5foot) boa constrictor he said he discovered on a riverbank has admitted he made up the story to get rid of a pet snake he found too big to handle, an animal rescue group said yesterday. “It turns out he could not get to grips with the snake and wanted to get rid of it this way,” said Susanne Hemetsberger, head of the Austrian Animal Protection Association. The owner handed over the reptile to an animal shelter. She said in hindsight the tale originally told by the Salzburg man, who has not been identified, that he had happened upon and bagged the 7-kg (15.5-pound) boa last week, seemed suspicious. “No passer-by who isn’t familiar with snakes would ever grab a boa constrictor. On the contrary, they would scream, run away and call the police,” she said. The man has two other twometre snakes that he wants to give away as well, Hemetsberger said. “The snake owner dished up one lie after another and I hope he gets the proper punishment for this. He can’t just release a snake and then pose as its finder,” she said, calling for curbs on the sale of exotic pets that inexperienced owners often find overwhelming.

By Poly Pantelides LAWYER and former interior minister Dinos Michaelides yesterday filed suit against a man who has implicated him in investigations into money laundering allegations against former Greek minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos. Michaelides, 75, has been implicated in one of the biggest scandals in Greece, spanning decades and involving prominent politician, Tsohatzopoulos. Michaelides has denied all claims and yesterday sued, asking the Greek authorities to indict for defamation and perjury. He is also due to sue today for €1.0 million and €100. “By law the claimant needs to ask for an amount, so I will get €100 and give €1.0 million to charity,” Michaelides said. Tsohatzopoulos was arrested in April over suspicion of
taking bribes and tax evasion, linked to the procurement of submarines from German firm Ferrostaal, and Russian TOR M1 missile systems. His cousin, businessman Nicos Zigras, who was also arrested in relation to the investigation, implicated Michaelides and his son, Michalis, last week. Michaelides said he was “shocked”. “Ever since my name has been mentioned as ‘implicated’… I have been trying to find a reason, for which this man [Zigras] would choose my son and I as ‘scapegoats’ trying to give the impression of truth to his false claims,” Michaelides said in his lawsuit. Zigras said that Michaelides allegedly carried luggage full of money, and cheques to Greece for Tsohatzopoulos, acted as a go-between, was directly involved in money laundering activities, and helped set up and was directly involved in offshore companies. “It is a text full
of hatred and maliciousness, and is obviously an effort (from Zigras) to transfer personal responsibility onto a multitude of other persons, especially me since he repeatedly uses my name,” Michaelides said. Zigras said he handled Tsohatzopoulos’ offshore accounts until 2004. Tsohatzopoulos nearly became prime minister in 1996 and has held various posts including ministries for defence, public works and labour. Michaelides – also an old hand who served as interior minister for Cyprus in the eighties and nineties among other posts – said that he knew Tsohatzopoulos as part of his duties as minister, and knew Zigras since he worked closely together with Tsohatzopoulos but maintained a “perfectly formal” relationship. “Mr Zigras does not specify nor focus in on the where, when and how of how I sup-
posedly committed these acts,” Michaelides said. In his suit, Michaelides explains in detail his background as part of the liberation struggle against the British administration, including being arrested twice, being tortured, and becoming a wanted man by the Brits. He also talks of his service to the state and mentions quitting “for personal reasons” in 1999. He was referring to Ombudswoman Eliana Nicolaou’s questions over planning changes to land which Michaelides bought and built a luxury home on, which eventually forced him to resign even though he said then he was being defamed. Michaelides is married with three children and three grandchildren. “This story has greatly pained and raised questions to my family and has upset not just my own life but that of my relatives, collaborators and friends,” he said.

Small shops struggle with electricity bills Paphos butchery, which has been open for 20 years says it cannot pay €1,870 bill and is closing down for good By Bejay Browne A NUMBER of small businesses in Paphos are being crippled by huge electricity bills causing some to shut up shop completely. One such business is N and T English butchery, owned and run by Paphos couple Rosie and Nick Panayiotou. The popular butchery will serve its customers for the last time tomorrow after 20 years in existence. The couple made the difficult decision to close down after receiving a massive electricity bill last month, for twice the amount of any of the highest bills they have received since opening. Rosie Panayiotou, 64, told the Cyprus Mail: “It’s so sad that we have to close and it’s very upsetting for us both, but we can’t afford to carry on. The last electricity bill we received was for €1,870. Prior to the electricity hikes, we used to pay between €600-€800.”
In an attempt to cut costs the pair had turned off a number of fridges and switched off equipment to ensure cost cutting but to no avail. “We are a small family business and we can’t sit back and watch our overdraft mount up. We have been in the butchery trade here for 21 years and in the current shop - which is on the Polis road in Paphosfor the past eleven years.” Rosie is English and her husband, who is 73, is Cypriot and they’ve been married for 47 years, choosing to live and work in Cyprus more than two decades ago. “It’s impossible for small businesses to cover the cost of rent and electricity bills. Trade is dropping off due to the economic crisis and people are more careful about purchasing,” said Rosie. She said her husband had recently suffered a nervous break down brought on by the stress of the business, and that along with the latest electricity bill
Building workers brave the heat out of the shade
Heat warning issued THE LABOUR inspection department warned employees yesterday that workers in the Nicosia and Paphos areas should not be exposed to the sun between 12 and 4pm due to the heat and humidity. They said that workers can carry out light tasks in the shade as long as they had plenty of water. In addition, even though employees in Limassol, Larnaca and Famagusta do not necessarily have to stop work they should still take measures to protect themselves from the harmful rays of the sun. Temperatures today will be 38C inland, between 33 and 38C on the coast and 24C in the mountains. Humidity is high reaching 40 per cent in Nicosia, 70 per cent on the coast and 55 per cent in the mountains. Due to the heatwave last week, over 10 people, mainly elderly, ended up in hospital suffering from heatstroke or heat exhaustion. An elderly lady also died from heat stroke last Wednesday in Nicosia.

prompted her to take the decision to close the shop. “We tried to sell the shop a couple of years ago, but no-one has any money to buy a business, so we will close on Saturday and on Monday all of our equipment will go to the auction house.”
STRESS The couple will retire and try to manage on Nick’s pension alone, which Rosie says will be quite difficult. “But it’s better to rid ourselves of all the stress. We had wanted to continue the butchery for the next five to eight years. “I love interacting with the public and our customers have always been great and very supportive of us. Many of them have brought us in cards to say they’re sorry that we’re closing.” Tommy Tuckers, a UK style take away in Paphos, has proved a hit with the public since it opened six months ago. But in spite of a constant flow of cus-
tomers the fledgling business is finding it difficult to cope with the large electricity bills. Neil Hart of Tommy Tuckers said: “The electricity bills for January, February and March were reasonable but our last bill was astronomically high- close to €1,000.” Hart said this was twice the amount of rent Tommy Tucker’s pays for the building in which it’s located. “The latest bill had so many extras added to it; it’s like a stealth tax applied by the government.” The takeaway has made a number of cutbacks to try to reduce electricity bills such as switching off air conditioning and turning off a number of fridges. “We will get through this but the electricity bills are eating into our profit. Why should I work all month and have nothing at the end of it,” said Hart.” “We need to have a pressure group which will lobby the government over electricity prices before matters get even worse.”

Banking boss says long road to go yet
CYPRUS TODAY Probe into C-sections HEALTH Minister Stavros Malas yesterday ordered an investigation into reports that a gynaecologist at the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia was allegedly scheduling unnecessary caesareans to earn extra in overtime. According to reports the doctor in question carried out 11 C-sections in one weekend alone. A written complaint was filed against the doctor, but the minister said he never received it. In an announcement, the ministry said all claims would be investigated, as would the reasons why Malas never received the complaint.

Break-in THIEVES broke in and stole around €64,100 worth of goods from a hotel in Kakopetria, which was under renovation, police said yesterday. According to the company in charge of renovations, the break-in took place between July 23 and 25. From the first floor of the hotel the thieves stole decorative paper and tiles worth €47,100 while from a small warehouse they stole €7,000 worth of machinery and from the kitchen €10,000 worth of equipment.
Board of three main banks meet Central Bank chief By Stefanos Evripidou
The court is expected today to charge the man suspected of planning attacks on Israeli targets in Cyprus, police spokesman Andreas Angelides said yesterday. “Interrogations are complete,” said Angelides. “The case file was presented to the legal services this morning and orders were given to refer the case to the criminal court”.
The 24-year-old suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, was arrested in Limassol on July 7, on suspicion of tracking the movements of Israeli tourists. He is a Swedish national of Lebanese origin. Israel said he was planning an attack similar to a suicide bus bombing in the Bulgarian city Burgas, which recently killed five Israelis
Investors still seeking justice By Jacqueline Agathocleous INVESTORS who were misled into buying high risk securities have come up with proposals to resolve the serious problem that has arisen. In a meeting on Wednesday night in Limassol, the association’s temporary central committee and district committees met to discuss proposals for resolving the issue. Their conclusions are expected to be ratified by the Pancyprian general assembly of investors on Sunday. “Everyone’s presence is imperative in our effort for justice,” said Phivos Mavrovouniotis, spokesman for the Investors Association. The proposals will on Monday be sent to the finance minister, Central Bank governor, Securities and Exchange Commission, House Institutions Committee, as well as the Popular Bank and Bank of Cyprus (BoC) – the two main banks responsible for the mess. Depositors claim they were deceived by banks which encouraged them to invest in securities without having an authorised professional properly explain the risks involved. As a result of the Greek sovereign debt write-down, Popular Bank and the BoC were hit with severe losses, forcing them to suspend interest payments on high-return investment products, causing their value to
plummet and leaving people with only a fraction of their initial investments. The former head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Giorgos Charalambous, has called on investors who were misled into buying high risk securities to file written complaints to the Central Bank to have their cases investigated. He said that if any law violations were spotted, this would be a powerful weapon in any legal action taken. On Wednesday, Charalambous referred to the MiFID European directive – Markets in Financial Investments Directive – which Cyprus has harmonised with and which clearly states that prospective investors should be thoroughly informed by financial experts before investing in such products. But Charalambous said it seemed this wasn’t the case with the present affair, as he said depositors were approached by “mere bank employees”. He added, “Therefore, what counts is whether the banks complied with (the directive)”. Charalambous urged all affected investors to send written complaints to the Central Bank (CB), so it can investigate if the banks complied with the law. “If (the CB) spots a violation of the law, this will be a powerful weapon in seeking a court decision,” said Charalambous.

CENTRAL BANK governor Panicos Demetriades yesterday met with the boards of the three major banks in Cyprus. His meeting with the Bank of Cyprus, Laiki Bank and Hellenic Bank comes at a time when international lenders from the European Commission, European Central Bank (ECB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) – known as the troika- are in Cyprus for a second visit to assess the request for an EU bailout to meet the Cyprus government’s debt obligations and the banks’ recapitalisation needs. Speaking after the meeting, newly-appointed CEO of the Bank of Cyprus Yiannis Kypri said the troika would need a long time to ascertain the total recapitalisation requirements of the Cypriot banks and to prepare the adjustment programme for Cyprus. “There is a long way to go” until the exact amount needed for the recapitalisation of the banks is calculated, Kypri said, noting that it would take months. “The capital requirement of the banking system has not been clarified yet. There is a procedure that will be followed,” he said. Asked to comment on the meeting with Demetriades, CEO of Hellenic Bank Makis Keravnos said such meetings took place regularly during which there is an exchange of views on all issues. “It was a productive meeting,” he said. Keravnos appeared confi-
dent that the banking system will weather the current crisis, noting that Cyprus has “overcome many crises in the past”. Cyprus’ two largest banks, Bank of Cyprus and Laiki were hit hard by a 76 per cent write-down of Greek sovereign debt. Laiki said it needed €1.8 billion to meet its recapitalisation requirements while Bank of Cyprus requested €500m from the state. According to press reports, the government believes the banks will need up to €6 billion to cover their high exposure to the Greek economy and non-performing loans. However, the same reports suggest the troika has very different and conflicting views, with the ECB considering the necessary sum required for the banks closer to €9 billion and the IMF €11 billion. Reports in the press also claim that Demetriades has asked the island’s two main banks to suspend the employment of senior figures ahead of an external investigation into the circumstances which led to the banks’ overexposure to Greek bonds. Politis yesterday reported that the Central Bank governor wants senior officials who were close to the former CEO of Bank of Cyprus Andreas Eliades removed. Asked to comment yesterday, Kypris said: “That’s a matter for the Central Bank to comment on if it wishes”. Pressed on whether the banks received such a letter, he said the board had some issues that it needed to look at soon, “but there is nothing to announce at this stage”.

Home Hadjipetrou briefs police union on his contacts with troika
CYPRUS TODAY Productivity declines
By Natalie Hami CIVIL servants union PASYDY boss Glafcos Hadjipetrou yesterday briefed the union of police officers SAK on his meeting on Wednesday with the troika team, and how it might affect them. He said public servants were willing to make more sacrifices but everyone else would have to make them also. “We’re all in a difficult position….yes we will make extra sacrifices but everyone else should make them too and according to what they can manage so that we can get over the crisis,” said Hadjipetrou. According to Hadjipetrou there were other ways to overcome the crisis without workers having to bear the brunt. “It is impossible for them. This cannot be remedied with sacrifices from workers in the public sector,” he added. Hadjipetrou said that they were waiting on the troika to clearly state what the problems were in the economy. This is expected to be done today at a meeting between the team and the government. He said he hoped they would suggest some reasonable measures. The public service had already seen a 12 per cent drop in earnings, and pointed the finger at the banks.
PRIVILEGE “When we constantly reduce wages to cover the wrong choices made by the heads of the banks, unavoidably the market will be affected too, but there can be no growth either,” he said. “We’re the only organisation who for the last two years has been saying that the Achilles heel of the Cypriot economy is the banking sector,” said Hadjipetrou. “Everyone must realise that a wage is not a privilege but a right.” Regarding the indexlinked Cost of Living Allowance (CoLA) Hadjipetrou said unions had explained to the troika that the allowance had been around for 80 years “from WWII down to the invasion, when half the population were still in tents”. Head of SAK Andreas Symeou assured his members that they would face any problems together. “As the police association we will not allow police officers to take to the streets like in other countries...” he said. Symeou said that police officers were not necessarily paid for extra duties. For example for football games officers are paid partly with time off, he said.
Troika members met early yesterday with DISY chief Nicos Anastassiades
(Christos Theodorides)
Cards on the table Christofias holds unpublicised meeting with troika (continued from front page) wasn’t for the banks’ exposure to Greek debt. He also said that measures were needed that wouldn’t strangle the economy and blight growth, but would help Cyprus exit the recession and start recovery. The state broadcaster’s report on the meeting was later confirmed by government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou last night. However he said no further comments would be made on the meeting. The leaders of main trade unions SEK, PEO and PASYDY were yesterday said to be in shock after their meeting with Charalambous, which was also held on the quiet. According to reports, the unions were told that troika was seeking a 7.5 per cent reduction of public servants’ wages, which is equivalent to their 13th salaries, with the aim of saving €140 million The troika also reportedly wants the reductions to continue in 2013 and 2014, reaching 15 per cent, which is equivalent to two monthly salaries a year. The EU/IMF team was also said to be toying with the idea of permanently cancelling CoLA, as a structural measure. It is also said to be sug-
gesting that workers’ contributions to their pensions increase to more than the current 3.0 per cent, while it wants the cost of the public service to be reduced by 50 per cent by asking for changes in the way pensions are estimated. The troika may also be seeking a haircut on the lump sums public servants receive on retirement. Presidential candidate and the leader of main opposition DISY, Nicos Anastassiades, yesterday said the troika had confirmed the island’s problems weren’t just restricted to the banking sector but the entire economy, in a meeting they had in the morning. “(Troika’s) observations weren’t restricted to the problems faced in the banking sector, as it is to be understood, but the economy as a whole,” said Anastassiades. He said he raised certain issues, which he felt were important so as to avoid social upheaval during efforts to help the economy recover. “However, it needs to sink in that we are facing a very difficult situation,” said Anastassiades, adding this was no time for populism or petty politics. “Now it’s time for sobriety, unity of power and responsible negotiating. The exclusive responsibility to negotiate lies with the govern-
President attends Olympics opening PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias was expected to arrive in London last night in order to attend the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony tonight. Tomorrow he will attend an event at the Greek centre in central London organised by the Cyprus Olympic Committee and the following day at the same centre he will open a photography exhibition called “Sports in Cyprus, a centuries old story.” The exhibition is one in a series that will open in Athens and Brussels to promote Cyprus’ sports culture. It will remain open until August 8. The Cyprus Sports Organisation has collected photographs of archaeological findings, spanning from the Bronze Age to the Roman Period, from the collections of Cyprus’ Archaeological Museum in Nicosia, Pierides-Laiki Group Museum and Limassol District Museum.
ment, which submitted the application for Cyprus’ accession to the support mechanism.” He said DISY was prepared to contribute to a joint effort. “The negotiations don’t just regard today and tomorrow, but the future of the country and the next generations,” said Anastassiades, repeating his call for all political powers to unite and deal with the challenges together. The other parties were up in arms. EDEK is seeking national cohesion, EVROKO called for transparency and information and the Greens said the government was acting intrepidly. Independent presidential candidate George Lillikas said the government was indecisive and weak. But the government spokesman repeated: “Cyprus wouldn’t have needed to apply to the European support mechanism, if there wasn’t the problem of the Cypriot banks’ exposure to the Greek economy.” He said this was commonly noted by the EU, ECB, IMF and all involved. “Unfortunately the opposi-
tion continues to cover up the vast responsibilities of the banks and insists on trying to blame the government,” said Stefanou. “Regardless of the vested interests and expediency behind the parties’ and politicians’ stance of hiding the banks’ responsibilities, there is one fact: this stance is harming the government’s negotiating effort and is prompting the troika to propose harsh and unpopular measures, which will transfer the cost of the problem with the banks onto the shoulders of the workers.” Regarding the size of the loan required just to get the banking system out of the red, estimated figures vary wildly with the government’s calculations reportedly putting the figure at €6 billion, the ECB closer to €9 billion and the IMF, a few euro more at €11 billion. All three estimates go much higher than the €2.3 billion requested by Laiki and Bank of Cyprus for their total recapitalisation needs, taking into consideration extreme scenarios on non-performing and bad loans.
PRODUCTIVITY, in the fourth quarter of 2011, declined by 0.5 per cent compared to the corresponding period of 2010, according to figures released by the Cyprus Productivity Centre. The decline reflects the 0.7 per cent reduction in GDP, which was partly offset by the 0.2 per cent reduction in the employed population. Labour productivity measured as Gross Value Added Value, per work hour was stagnant in Q4 2011 compared with the corresponding period of 2010, as total work hour marked an equal reduction (0.7 per cent) as the GDP. The biggest decline was recorded in the construction sector which fell by 10.2 per cent, while according to Eurostat figures Cyprus recorded one of the lowest productivity rates among EU member-states with 0.4 per cent. Greece and Spain, whose economies have a similar structure to Cyprus, recorded positive productivity rates with 1.0 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively.
Deposits down TOTAL deposits with Monetary and Financial Institutions (MFI) in Cyprus recorded a decrease of 1.1 per cent in June, on an annual basis, reaching €70.77b, the Central Bank said. May 2012 deposits recorded a decrease of 1.2 per cent, amounting to €72.46b, while June 2011 statistics showed an increase of 6.3 per cent, to €71.07b. The total MFI loans for June 2012 recorded an increase of 10 per cent to €71.69b, on an annual basis, the same increase that was recorded in May 2012 (€70.30b). June 2011 loans recorded an increase of 9.3 per cent to €65.13b. Statistics show that June 2012 deposits of domestic residents held with MFIs recorded a decrease of 1.7 per cent, to €43.56b, compared to €44.26b in May 2012 and €44.25b in June 2011.

‘Squandering public’s money in Mesa Yitonia’
BACKING FOR LILLIKAS?
Some staff being given extra allowance for doing their job, according to claims By Poly Pantelides THE island’s smallest municipality - Mesa Yitonia in Limassol - is in big trouble with a group of its employees who claim that funds are being mismanaged to allow some staff to garner overtime benefits and allowances for “being responsible workers”. The office of the mayor, Doros Antoniou, said that a group of employees had sent a letter complaining about overtime payments, unfair allowances, and mismanagement.
RESPONSIBILITY The letter, reported in daily Politis, lists a number of accusations and grievances from 17 employees. The employees claim that some staff were given a ‘responsibility allowance,’ set at 5.0 per cent of their salary, which was being given to workers who “fulfil their duties responsibly”. The complainants question the criteria used.
They also point the finger at specific individuals - by identifying their job positions – whose promotions were allegedly unjustified. The municipal workers have taken issue with one staff member who they say is guilty of anything from being abusive to using municipal vehicles for hunting to others who work in the afternoon so they can be paid overtime rates. They say they are impacted personally and professionally by a display of nepotism and favouritism. The mayor said he will comment after he has studied the report and started addressing the complaints. Mesa Yitonia is north of Limassol and is one of the six communities which obtained municipality status this year. By law, any community which grows to 5,000 becomes a municipality. The island, which has a population of about 840,000, now has 30 functioning municipalities. Three others are the ‘refu-

gee municipalities’ in that they represent districts in the occupied north. State and parliament have reduced municipalities’ available funding this year by €18 million – in budget cuts and a subsidy reduction. So the municipalities’ union which has lamented the contemporaneous augmentation of municipalities and budget reduction has recommended costsaving measures across the board.
STRUGGLING This includes better management of funds and reduction of administrative expenses. A number of municipalities have told the press they are struggling to pay their staff. Strovolos Mayor Lazaros Savvides said that many wereon the brink of ruin while Ayios Dhometios mayor Costas Petrou said he could not cover their budget deficit and was struggling to pay his staff.
Socialist EDEK’s central committee is tomorrow expected to approve a decision by the leadership to support independent presidential candidate George Lillikas. According to the CyBC, EDEK leader Yiannakis
Omirou is today expected to authorise a meeting with Lillikas to discuss the prospect of collaboration. The party’s decision is expected to be announced officially today, while the central committee is due to meet tomorrow
Man found guilty of conning people out of €4.4m THE NICOSIA Criminal Court found a 37-year old minor employee of an accounting firm guilty of duping clients into giving him €4.4 million under the false promise of making a high-return investment. In its ruling on Wednesday, the court rejected the argument of the 37-year-old from Kakopetria that he had taken the money from various clients as loans to make investments that would yield ten per cent returns. According to yesterday’s Phileleftheros, the 37year-old worked at a well-known accounting firm in the capital as an archivist of cheques. He was found guilty of 11 charges related to fraud, securing money under false pretences and money laundering. According to the court ruling, despite working as a minor employee at the accounting firm, he presented himself to three complainants as the manager of the firm, and to two others as the manager of an offshore bank.
THIS WEEK IN YOUR
He told all five that he could invest their money and secure a ten per cent monthly return. The five ‘invested’ large sums of money which the accused did not invest though he did for a while give them monthly returns on their ‘investment’, convincing them that his investment plan was solid and thereby luring them to make further investments. Each time he gave back a return on the investment, they gave him more money for new investments. By 2008, after the accused had been sacked from his employment, the unsuspecting investors lost all trace of him. A European arrest warrant was issued for him, after which he turned up in Canada and was arrested. He claimed in court that he borrowed the money from ‘friends’ not investors, offering a high interest return, and had provided them with a promissory note prepared by a lawyer to assure them of the legitimacy of the loan.
The accused ended up taking close to €4.4 million between 2006 and 2008, some of which he returned in supposed ‘returns’ to investors. He denied that it was part of a well-planned scam to take money from unsuspecting investors and use it for the purposes of electronic gambling. Though he did acknowledge gambling from time to time, “like everyone else does”. He argued that the loan was being repaid normally until lenders became impatient, and started to threaten him, forcing him to leave the country for Canada. The criminal court rejected the 37-year-old’s testimony that he took money on loan to invest elsewhere as completely unreliable and an insult to the court’s intelligence. It ruled that at least a part of the money duped out of the complainants had ended up in the “black hole of electronic gambling”. The man will be sentenced on August 1.

Police mull moving key witness abroad BECAUSE the main prosecution witness in a high profile murder case has been sneaking out from protective custody, the police are thinking of moving him abroad. Fanos Hadjigeorgiou, a key prosecution witness in the trial for the murder of media boss Andis Hadjicostis, has occasionally snuck out of the house where he was placed for his own safety, under police supervision. Hadjigeorgiou, who has said he drove the getaway motorbike on the night of the murder, would reportedly creep into a house next door to the one he was staying at and leave from there. On one occasion, the police found him and took him back and on another he returned on his own. Hadjigeorgiou is now guarded around the clock and measures have been taken to block his access to the neighbouring house. Nonetheless, the police are considering moving Hadjigeorgiou abroad to protect the integrity of the case. It was not clear yesterday how seriously this was being discussed although the police confirmed it was on the table. During the trial, Hadjigeorgiou’s girlfriend, Yiota Pendodji, told the court that he went to pieces after Hadjicostis was murdered. Pendjodji said that on the day after the murder she found her boyfriend crying who then confessed everything to her. Hadjigeorgiou himself told the court that he “really regretted” the murder and had a “crisis of conscience” which pushed him into blowing the whistle on the other alleged conspirators. The four accused are: TV presenter Elena Skordelli and her brother Tasos Krasopoulis, who allegedly masterminded the murder, alleged fixer Andreas Gregoriou, and Gregoris Xenofontos who allegedly shot Hadjicostis. Sigma boss Hadjicostis was shot twice at close range outside his home in Nicosia on January 11, 2010.

China indicts Bo’s wife for UK man’s murder
Exodus as Assam violence escalates
Ousted Politburo official’s wife could face the death penalty
By Biswajyoti Das
By Michael Martina and Chris Buckley CHINA will try Gu Kailai, the wife of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai, on charges of murdering a British man, state media said yesterday in the latest turn in a scandal that has rocked the government in Beijing and could bring Gu the death penalty. The contentious dismissal of Bo has already shaken the Communist Party’s looming once-in-a-decade succession, and now Gu and family aide Zhang Xiaojun will be prosecuted for allegedly poisoning businessman Neil Heywood last year over “conflict of economic interests”, the official Xinhua news agency said. “The facts of the two defendants’ crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial,” said the Xinhua report summarising the indictment. “Therefore, the two defendants should be charged with intentional homicide.” Gu and Zhang will face trial in Hefei, a city in eastern China, far from Chongqing, the sprawling municipality in the southwest where Bo made his political base and where Heywood died in a hillside hotel in November. Bo has not been named as a suspect in the murder case, but he is separately under investigation by party authorities and could also face trial at a later time. Political observers have said a failure to forge a unified stance on handling the divisive Bo case could affect the Communist Party’s focus on working out the leadership changes that will be decided at the upcoming congress. Bo, the 62-year-old party chief of Chongqing before his dismissal, was widely seen as pushing for a spot in that new leadership until felled by the scandal brought to light by his former police chief, Wang Lijun. “As big as this case is, the party congress will now proceed quite smoothly,” said Joseph Fewsmith, a professor of Chinese politics at Bos-
Murdered: Neil Heywood ton University. “The party has handled this case as one of one person breaking the law. The ideological issues have been pushed to the side, although that doesn’t mean they’re not there.” Britain responded to news that Gu had been indicted for the murder of Heywood by saying it was glad to see that China was continuing investigating the killing. “We are glad to see that the Chinese authorities are continuing with the investigation into the death of Neil Heywood. We are dedicated to seeking justice for him and his family and we will be following developments closely,” a statement from the Foreign Office said. Xinhua did not give a date for the trial, but Shen Zhigeng, a lawyer who had been employed by Gu’s family, told Reuters that her trial was likely to start on August 7 or 8. China’s party-run courts rarely find in favour of defendants, and Gu and Zhang could face the death penalty. The indictment comes around a week after Frenchman Patrick Henri Devillers, 52, flew from Cambodia to China to serve as a witness in the case. Devillers was detained last month in Cambodia at the behest of Beijing because of his suspected business links to Gu. Bo and his wife have had no chance publicly to address the accusations
Gu Kailai, pictured with her husband Bo Xilai, is accused of allegedly poisoning Heywood last year over a ‘conflict of economic interests’ against them since Bo was ousted from his Chongqing post in March. But shortly before his dismissal, Bo said that he and his family had been the victims of slanderous accusations by foes of his policies, especially his controversial crackdown on organised crime. Since Bo’s sacking, supporters of his left-leaning policies and rhetoric have continued to argue that he is the victim of a political plot. The removal of Bo has triggered rifts and uncertainty, disrupting the
Communist Party’s usually secretive and carefully choreographed process of settling on a new central leadership in the run up to the 18th Party Congress. The congress, scheduled to be held late this year, possibly in October, will appoint that leadership. President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao will then step down from their government posts at the National People’s Congress in early 2013, when Vice President Xi Jinping is likely to succeed Hu as president.
TRUCKS loaded with women, children, mattresses and bags of rice rolled into a refugee camp in India’s northeastern Assam state yesterday, as security forces tried to stamp out some of the worst communal violence in a decade with shoot-on-sight orders. The death toll from clashes between Bodo tribespeople and Muslim settlers has risen to 44, Assam’s chief minister, Tarun Gogoi, said after police reported finding more bodies overnight. Police also opened fire on groups armed with sticks and spears for violating a curfew. Fearing for their lives, tens of thousands of Muslims and Bodos have fled their homes in remote hamlets along the border with Bhutan, and sought shelter in camps in larger towns. Roving armed bands have set ablaze hundreds of tin-roofed homes, many made of hay and clay, in the nearly week-long orgy of violence. Gogoi said 200,000 people had been displaced by the fighting. The relief camp in a school in the town of Bijni is just one of nearly 60 hastily set up to cope with the flood of refugees, officials said. Many of the camps lack food, water and security. Angry refugees surrounded a group of state lawmakers visiting the Bijni camp on Thursday and demanded they take action. “Go back, go back,” they chanted. The lawmakers, clearly rattled by the encounter, cancelled plans to visit another camp and returned to the state capital with a security escort. “There is no security at all,” complained Habibur Rahman, 45, who fled to Bijni school camp earlier this week along with his parents, sister, wife and daughter.
Artillery shells hit southern Damascus and Aleppo as Assad forces pound rebels By Mariam Karouny DAMASCUS and Syria’s second biggest city, Aleppo, came under shell fire yesterday as troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad stepped up efforts to crush rebels threatening the government’s two main power centres. One of the most senior figures to defect from Assad’s inner circle, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, put himself forward as someone who could help unite the fragmented opposition inside and outside Syria on a blueprint for a transfer of power. A bomb attack that killed four of Assad’s closest lieu-
tenants last week prompted predictions among his enemies that the 46-year-old president’s time in power was drawing to a close. But in the days that have followed that attack, Assad’s forces have noticeably toughened their response to the armed revolt, with fixed-wing combat aircraft seen in action over Aleppo and rebel fighters said by opposition sources to have been summarily executed on the streets of Damascus. Residents in the capital reported a shell landing in southern districts every minute yesterday morning. Helicopters were attacking the Hajar-al-Aswad district, one of the last rebel strongholds in the city after days
of street fighting, opposition activists said. After a major assault on rebels in Damascus last week, the army has turned to Aleppo, reinforcing troops there with an armoured column that had been operating in a northern province, apparent evidence of the government’s aim not to lose control of Syria’s commercial capital, a city of 2.5 million. Fierce clashes raged in the early hours of yesterday in Aleppo, and an activist said rebels now controlled half of the city, a claim that could not be independently verified. “There was shelling this morning on the Salaheddine and Mashhad dis-
tricts,” said Aleppo activist Abu Hisham. “Now it has stopped, but helicopters are buzzing overhead.” Activists said 24 people were killed in fighting in and around Aleppo on Wednesday, swelling a national death toll of about 18,000 since the revolt against Assad began 16 months ago. In the Syrian capital, a resident in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp reported heavy shelling, particularly near the southern Hajar al-Aswad district. She said the army seemed to be targeting sites on the edges of the camp, firing shells every minute. The bombardment started around 7 a.m. and was still going three hours later.

Obama seeks deal on gun violence Colorado tragedy happens on a smaller scale every day By Alister Bull
Obama: recognises the tradition of gun ownership
US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has pledged to work with leaders of all political stripes to “arrive at a consensus” on how to reduce gun violence across the United States after the Colorado
shootings highlighted the issue in an election year. Closing out a multiday trip that began in Aurora, Colorado, where he met with families and victims of the movie theatre massacre there, Obama told a mostly African-American audience on Wednesday that
such tragedies are replayed on a smaller scale in cities throughout the country on a daily basis. “Every day and a half the number of young people we lose to violence is about the same as the number of people we lost in that movie theatre,” Obama said in remarks to the National Urban League, a group that works to promote civil rights and economic improvement for African-Americans. “I’m going to continue to work with members of both parties and with religious groups and with civic organisations to arrive at a consensus around violence reduction.” Discussing or even touching on the issue of gun control during an election year is risky, and Obama has been careful to avoid making proposals that could offend gun owners and rally his Republican opponents. The president made a point of emphasising his support for the US Constitution’s Second Amendment, which covers the right to bear arms. “We recognise the tradi-
tions of gun ownership that passed on from generation to generation, that hunting and shooting are part of a cherished national heritage,” Obama said. “But I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals. That they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities.” Obama did not make any new proposals on gun control in his remarks, though he said background checks for people seeking to buy firearms were more thorough since he took office. Republican Mitt Romney, Obama’s opponent in the Nov. 6 election, said earlier this week that additional laws would not have stopped the massacre in Colorado. The former governor of Massachusetts has backed gun control measures in the past. Twelve people were killed and 58 wounded after a shooter opened fire at a screening of the latest Batman movie in the Denver suburb of Aurora last week.
Treason verdict in SA trial THE mastermind of a white supremacist plot to assassinate Nelson Mandela and drive blacks out of South Africa was found guilty of high treason yesterday after a trial that started almost a decade ago. The verdict on former university lecturer Mike du Toit was the first member of the “Boeremag”, or “Boer Army”, a rag-tag militia of apartheid loyalists, in connection with a botched 2002 coup attempt in Africa’s biggest economy. He will be sentenced at a later date. Verdicts on another 21 are expected over the next few weeks. Under du Toit’s plan, concocted around barbecues and in fast-food outlets, the Boeremag would force South Africa’s black majority - roughly 40 million people - over the border into Zimbabwe with food parcels, while its 1.2 million Indians would be put on boats back to the subcontinent. Witnesses testified that the group also planned to assassinate Mandela, who became South Africa’s first black president in 1994 and acted as a unifying force after decades of white-minority rule. The Boeremag also intended to shoot whites who opposed their vision of a racially pure nation. Despite racial tensions in Mandela’s “Rainbow Nation”, radical white groups such as the Boeremag have very little support among South Africa’s five million-strong white population.
Crops wilt under US’ scorching sun THE MOST extensive drought in five decades intensified this week across the US Midwest and Plains states that produce most of the county’s corn, soybeans and livestock, a report from climate experts showed yesterday. Almost 30 per cent of the nine-state Midwest was suffering extreme drought, nearly triple from the previous week, according to the US Drought Monitor for the week ending July 24. Conditions in the Midwest, which produces roughly three quarters of the corn and soybean crops in the world’s largest producer and exporter, worsened despite the first measurable rainfall in a month in some areas. More than 53 per cent of the United States and Puerto Rico are in moderate drought or worse, a record-large amount for the fourth straight week in the Drought Monitor’s 12year history. “The 2-plus inches (of rain) from southern Wisconsin to northern Indiana was able to only maintain status quo. Most other areas were not as lucky,” said Drought Monitor author Richard Heim of the National Climatic Data Centre.

Draghi sends strong signal ECB will act By David Milliken and Marius Zaharia EUROPEAN Central Bank President Mario Draghi pledged yesterday to do whatever was necessary to protect the eurozone from collapse, sending a strong signal that inflated Spanish and Italian borrowing costs were in his sights. Fears about the eurozone's future are intensifying with Spain and Italy facing frenzied pressure on financial markets and Greece holding crunch meetings with its international lenders having failed to keep its repair plans on track, raising fresh questions about its place in the currency bloc. With the need for urgent action becoming increasingly apparent, the ECB appears to be gearing up to flex its muscles, something Madrid and Rome have been seeking for months. “Within our mandate, the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro. And believe me, it will be
Spanish, Italian bonds fall sharply on hopes of action enough,” Draghi told an investment conference in London to mark the beginning of the Olympics. “To the extent that the size of the sovereign premia (borrowing costs) hamper the functioning of the monetary policy transmission channels, they come within our mandate,” he said. The ECB has cut interest rates to record lows and offered banks unlimited liquidity without any meaningful boost to the eurozone economy or bank lending resulting. The comments are Draghi's boldest to date and suggest the central bank is ready to defend Italy and Spain whose borrowing costs have hit unsustainable levels. Winding up his remarks to an audience of business leaders, he said: “I think I will stop here. I think my assessment was candid and frank enough.”
The euro jumped above $1.23 for the first time in two weeks after his remarks, Spanish and Italian bond yields fell sharply and the index of leading European shares jumped more than two per cent. After defending Italy last year, the ECB has kept its sovereign bond-buying programme mothballed for months. Internal opposition to reviving it is stiff so focus will turn to what else the ECB could do following Draghi's remarks. Economists think despite the reservations it could be forced to buy bonds again, or support struggling eurozone countries via the back door. On Wednesday, ECB policymaker Ewald Nowotny broke ranks with his colleagues, saying that giving Europe's permanent rescue fund a banking licence so that it could drawn on central bank funds had merits. Draghi and others
have previously rejected that option. Alternatively, the bank could act as the Federal Reserve and Bank of England have, and opt for straight quantitative easing – money-printing by another name. “The comments about high government bond yields disrupting ECB monetary policy transmission are interesting, in so far as they hint at a possible attempt to circumvent the restrictions on outright government bond purchases,” said Marc Ostwald, Strategist at Monument Securities. “Of course it remains to be see whether Herr Weidmann, Herr Asmussen, Frau Merkel and Herr Schaeuble would agree with his assessment,” he said, referring to the senior members of the German government and its representatives at the ECB. French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said Draghi's remarks on government bond yields were “very positive”, adding the eurozone should also not ignore the option to use its EFSF bailout fund to buy bonds.

One in three chance Britain could lose its AAA rating - Reuters poll BRITAIN has about a one in three chance of losing its AAA sovereign credit rating, a Reuters poll found yesterday, a move that would put huge pressure on finance minister George Osborne who is sticking with austerity even as the recession deepens. “A worsening growth outlook threatens (Britain's) fiscal goals,” said Nick Stamenkovic, macro strategist at RIA Capital Markets in Edinburgh. “The risk of losing AAA status is rising.”
Rates These Bank of Cyprus rates for telegraphic transfer transactions (spot deals) apply to yesterday, but provide a good guide to today’s value against the euro.
The poll of over 60 economists was taken after news on Wednesday that the economy contracted by 0.7 per cent in the second quarter, deeper than even the most pessimistic forecast, and shrinking faster than the ailing eurozone. A top-notch AAA rating in theory helps keep government borrowing rates low by guaranteeing investors that no matter what, their debts will be repaid. The consensus probability of a downgrade, 35 per cent, is up from 25 per cent polled in March. A slight majority said Osborne should not relax his hotly-contested fiscal austerity programme, which aims to eliminate the budget deficit, at eight per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), within five years. The Bank of England will have to pick up the slack as the government proceeds
with huge spending cuts and public service layoffs, increasing its bond purchase programme to a total of £400 billion, probably in November, the poll found. Aggressive fiscal tightening in eurozone countries such as Spain and Greece have led to even deeper economic contractions there, with Greece bordering on depression and facing a very real threat of ejection from the 17-member eurozone. Both Moody's Investors Service and Fitch Ratings have a negative outlook for Britain's triple-A debt rating, warning it could lose it in the next couple of years if the government relaxes its fiscal stance. Forecasts in the Reuters Poll, taken from a sample of economists and bond strategists this week, ranged from a low probability of just five per cent of a sovereign rating downgrade in the next year to a very high 80 per cent.

US jobless benefits claims fall THE number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell last week to near a four-year low but an unusual pattern for summer factory shutdowns kept hopes in check that the weak labour market was improving. Other data yesterday showed new orders for long-lasting US manufactured goods rose in June although a gauge of planned business spending plans dropped, pointing to a slowdown in factory activity. Economists said the two economic reports did little to change the view that the economy was stuck in a rough patch. “They both look good on the surface, but I don't think there's really anything to get excited about,” said Stephen Stanley, an economist at Pierpont Securities in Stamford, Connecticut. A third report showed contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes unexpectedly fell in June, a worrisome sign for the housing market.

The troika should be as tough as possible on public sector privileges THE MEETINGS of troika officials have fuelled much speculation in the media about the measures that would be taken. We have heard about cuts in public employees’ pensions and wages, the suspension of the 13th salary and the abolition of CoLA, with defiant union bosses insisting that they would resist the imposition of such measures. The government, reportedly, is against these measures but we doubt it can think of any other ways to cut state spending. But Cyprus’ population does not consist exclusively of pampered public employees. There are many people who would support any move to eliminate the privileges that have been enjoyed by public sector employees at huge cost to the taxpayer, and no Cypriot politician would dare touch. In fact these scandalous privileges are the main cause for our precarious public finances. The elimination of the privileges together with the reduction of positions would be the first big step towards fiscal discipline as it would save the state hundreds of millions of euros and put public finances on a healthy footing. First, public employees must all have to contribute the same percentage of their salary, as all other workers to the social insurance fund; they should also pay a percentage of the salary towards the retirement bonus they receive, in the same way that private sector employees pay every month into a provident fund. It is a gross social injustice that workers who receive the highest pensions and retirement pay-offs pay next to nothing for them, expecting the taxpayer to pick up the bill on the absurd grounds that it was a worker’s conquest. The truth is that it is a public workers’ scam at the expense of the rest of us. Wages and pensions of the public employees should also be reduced to be brought in line with rest of society. It is unheard of for the workforce which creates the wealth to receive markedly lower wages, on average, than the least productive section of the workforce. And the same is true in relation to pensions which are three times as high for public sector workers who until last year contributed nothing towards them. We should not forget free healthcare – also a form of payment – which a public servant is entitled to regardless of his or her income. This arrangement ensures that a civil servant on €80,000 a year has free healthcare while a private sector worker on €20,000 has to pay at state hospitals. Troika members should be as tough as possible on public sector employee privilege. Scrapping the privileges of our labour aristocracy would not only put state finances in order, by creating a sustainable public sector, but also bring a sense of social justice. The troika will be doing what needed to be done a long time ago, by our own politicians.

The mythical rise of Asian Americans Comment Vishakha N Desai
T
HE PEW Center’s recent report “The Rise of Asian Americans,” which shows that Asians, not Latinos, comprise the largest group of immigrant arrivals in the United States, took many people by surprise. The data also show that Asian Americans have the highest education and per capita income. Together with low reported discrimination, the report paints a portrait of American success. On the face of these findings, now already three years old, Asian Americans should expect to have a bigger voice in American politics and, indeed, in American society. In fact, Asian Americans remain a relatively rare sight in leadership positions, even in the corporate world, where one would assume that their education and ambition would be most beneficial. If hard work was all it took to rise into the upper echelons of power in corporate America, one would expect to see many Asian American faces at the top, perhaps especially in financial services, accounting, technology, and health care. Study after study shows the reverse to be true. For example, research conducted by Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics shows that just 30 Fortune 100 companies had Asian-Pacific Islander representation on their boards in 2011. Twenty-nine API directors held 32 of 1,211 total board seats, and two of the 100 CEOs were of API descent. Asia Society’s own research of Asian-Pacific American employees finds that just 42% believe that there are APA role models at their companies, and only 48% believe that APAs are amply represented in key positions at their companies. And, in the comprehensive National Asian American Survey 9% of respondents reported being unfairly denied a job or fired, and 12.9% alleged that they had been unfairly denied a promotion at work. This is not a picture of a minority group marching inexorably toward better lives and
In many ways, Asian Americans are caught in a no-win situation reaching into the upper echelons of US society, without facing discrimination. Instead, the barriers faced by all minority populations in the US apply equally to Asian Americans, with certain features particular to, or more apparent in, this community. If all it took was hard work to succeed in America, what has happened to all those APAs who entered US companies on the bottom rung? Surely they did not just disappear. Rather than being a model minority, Asian Americans are in fact a neglected minority. Part of the problem is an overall insistence on looking at the Asian American population largely from the point of view of its members’ countries of origin. This extends the exoticism of the “Orient” with a litany of names that only recently have entered the American consciousness, while overlooking more integral perspectives. For example, we have seen from workplace data that time in the US or nativity is a critical factor. Pew’s research finds some fascinating differences between native-born and foreign-born Asian Americans. Simply put, Asian immigrants who arrive in the US at younger ages are more like their nativeborn counterparts in outlook

and perspective. In addition, the perception of Asian Americans as the “perpetual other” is alive and well. Indeed, the rise of Asia itself, and US companies’ resulting focus on the Asian market, has in many ways served to amplify it. We see this when companies hold up their activities in Asia as examples of what they are doing for the Asian American community. There is also the insidious inference that someone who chooses to call herself Chinese-American is clinging to a non-American identity, whereas someone who chooses to call herself, say, ItalianAmerican, is above suspicion. This alienation is felt in the workplace as well, with just 49% of APA employees in our survey saying that they feel a sense of belonging at their companies. The perception that these employees are “great workers but not leaders,” or that they have “problems communicating or showing assertiveness,” is pervasive. In many ways, Asian Americans are caught in a no-win situation. When their behavior aligns with preconceptions (shy and non-assertive), this is used to justify not promoting them or engaging them on important projects. On the other hand, when Asian Americans exhibit leadership
behaviours similar to those of others, they are perceived as overly aggressive. As Asian Americans become a majority native-born community in the next few decades, challenging these perceptions will become increasingly important. The model minority myth perpetuated by the Pew research is misleading. At its core, it contains a highly objectionable assumption that other minorities do not work hard enough to succeed. In addition, as others have eloquently argued, the topline numbers and statistics hide wide variance within the Asian American community itself. Finally, insistence on holding up Asian Americans’ “success” often serves as an excuse to overlook the very real challenges that they face. If corporate America and the US more generally are to realize the full potential of all citizens, we can no longer use Asian Americans to cling to the idea that it is an unalloyed meritocracy. If anything, their experience points to the need for profound change in the American workplace and US corporate culture. Vishakha N. Desai is President of the Asia Society © Project Syndicate 2012

Keira Knightley works hard to convince herself she is ‘not s**t’ THE Anna Karenina actress says she took a “massive slamming” earlier in her career which has had a permanent negative effect on her self-confidence. She said: “When you take a massive slamming early on, I don’t think you ever really get over it. I look at some actors of my age who didn’t go through a slamming and I cannot understand their confidence. They’re like a different species. I think that’s ingrained into me now, that feeling of needing to convince myself I’m not s**t.” Keira got her first big break in Bend It Like Beckham in 2002 when she was just 17, but didn’t feel like she was treated like a proper actress until after Pride and Prejudice in 2005. Although she claims she never reads stories about her, she does sometimes get exposed to headlines.

He said: “I’m really good with a guitar. A hammer not so much. That’s a big part... of it. “There’s a lot of me trying to do that stuff and I actually take pride in it because I feel like it’s ownership in something, and I feel empowered when I do it. I really enjoy it. “I put all the flooring down in our basement... wood flooring. I tried and I did a pretty good job. There’s some weird cuts in a couple of places, but it’s pretty good.” Danielle added: “I (slung) a carpet over it.”
Not greatest band in the world CHARLIE Watts doesn’t believe The Rolling Stones are the best rock ‘n’ band ever. The drummer with the Honky Tonk Women group plays down the idea that the Rolling Stones - which are now comprised of himself, Sir Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood - were the greatest band in the world, as they were introduced in 1969. He said: “What about Little Richard? Then you have Dave Bartholomew and Fats Domino. Chuck Berry’s studio band - there isn’t a better rock ‘n’ roll band. “That’s where we got it from. ‘Roll over Beethoven’ by everybody else is a joke. We came close sometimes with ‘Little Queenie’ or ‘Around and Around’.”
Paparazzo in Bieber charges Criminal charges linked to car chase mark first use of journalists’ law A PAPARAZZO photographer faces criminal charges in connection with a high-speed chase of Justin Bieber, marking the first use of a new law designed to clamp down on the reckless pursuit of celebrities. Los Angeles City Attorney’s office filed four misdemeanour charges against Paul Raef, 30, including reckless driving with the intent to capture pictures for commercial gain, reckless driving, failure to obey a peace officer and following another vehicle too closely. Bieber pulled over for police and was given a speeding ticket. Paparazzi pursuit of celebrities has long been identified as a risk in Los Angeles. Lawyer Harland Braun, who has defended cases involving paparazzi and has had to fend off photographers chasing his celebrity clients, said: “It’s Hollywood. There are a huge number of celebrities and
there’s a lot of money paid for these pictures. “Unfortunately, innocent people get caught up in these chases. I think the law is a good thing.” City attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan said the Raef case meets all the criteria spelled out in the law, which has not been used before. “We’re very confident in our case,” he said. But a leading First Amendment lawyer said the California law is likely to be challenged vigorously. Douglas Mirell said the statute enacted nearly two years ago seeks to punish members of the press by a different standard than the average person. “A fan doing the same thing, trying to get a glimpse of Bieber or taking a photo for their personal photo album might be engaged in the same egregious conduct. But it would fall outside the statute because they
were not doing it for a commercial purpose,” Mirell said. He said members of the press should be prosecuted in the same way as others for laws such as reckless driving but should not be singled out as more culpable than others. The charges stem from a July 6 incident in which Los Angeles councillor Dennis Zine, a former police officer, and three other motorists called emergency number 911 to report a high-speed chase along the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley. Officers saw six vehicles pursuing a silver Fisker Karma, a high-end sports car driven by Bieber. Raef’s Toyota was seen travelling at speeds over 80mph, weaving across all lanes of the freeway and on the shoulder, forcing its way into lanes where there was little room to merge safely.
Authorities said motorists were forced to brake and swerve to avoid colliding with Raef’s vehicle and the others. Bieber pulled over when officers signalled him to do so, but Raef’s vehicle did not stop. Bieber was given a speeding ticket and released. The matter might have ended there, but 30 minutes later, Bieber called 911 and said he was again being followed by the same Toyota. California highway patrol officers arrived at a central Los Angeles garage, where other paparazzi had congregated, and found the Toyota with the same number plate as the one that had chased the singer. Officers identified Raef as the driver. Raef is scheduled to appear in court on August 9. If convicted, he faces up to one year in county jail and $3,500 in fines.
Weisz trusts husband around women Costner seeking profits 42-year-old actress Rachel Weisz - who fell for James Bond star Daniel Craig on the set of Dream House in 2011 - says she doesn’t get jealous of her husband’s onscreen romances with Bond Girls and has a relaxed approach to acting. Rachel said: “It’s just make-believe. It’s a strange job in that way for sure. “We don’t sit around talking about acting but you both understand you’ve got to be flexible. Every few months you start a new job.” The couple married in June 2011 and have two children between them, although The Bourne Legacy star Rachel insists it wasn’t love at first sight. She revealed: “It wasn’t really like that. We’d been friends for ages.” The brunette beauty - who has six-year-old Henry with ex-partner Darren Aronofsky - also admitted that she hasn’t ruled out having another child with Daniel in the future. Rachel said: “I’m pretty content. I’m not planning on having more, but never say never.”

KEVIN Costner is suing producers of Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves for his share of the film’s profits. The 57-year-old star claimed in a Los Angeles lawsuit that Morgan Creek Productions had not paid him for two years. However bosses said they had paid the actor $40 million and had been “very nice to him” in regards to the movie which made $390 million. A lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by Kevin starts out with very harsh words for the independent studio that backed the 1991 blockbuster. It alleges: “Every actor hopes to star in a great movie that makes substantial profits. But if you’re hoping to earn profits based on the success of your film and you want to be paid on a timely basis, then one company you certainly do not want to do business with is Defendant Morgan Creek Productions.” Kevin, represented by Marty Singer and Michael Holtz at Lavely & Singer, says that Morgan Creek promised it would share profits with him but “when it came time to re-

Morgan Creek CEO James Robinson responded: “Why is it after 22 years Mr. Costner finds fault with our accounting procedures or for that matter our way of doing business? “We have paid him over $40 million. I think we’ve been very nice to him. I wonder how much money he has made from other films where he is participant. We’ve been very straight with him.”

Data strengthens view of HIV threat for gay black men A STUDY of black gay and bisexual men in six U.S. cities found HIV infection rates that were 50 per cent higher than among their white counterparts, and rates were even higher for men under the age of 30 in the same community, researchers said on Monday. The research, presented at the International AIDS Conference in Washington on Monday, offers stronger evidence to existing estimates that young black men who have sex with men represent the leading edge of the US HIV epidemic. The team said the overall infection rates among US black gay and bisexual men rival those seen in sub-Saharan African countries that are hardest hit by the virus that causes AIDS.
Close ties aid ovarian cancer survival WOMEN with ovarian cancer may have somewhat better survival odds when they feel emotionally supported by family and friends, a new study suggests. Researchers found that of 168 ovarian cancer patients, there were 95 deemed to have “high social attachment” - meaning they had relationships that made them feel emotionally secure and closely connected to at least one other person. And after almost five years, 59 per cent of those women were still alive, versus 38 per cent of patients with lesser emotional bonds. The researchers are not sure of the reasons for the link. It seemed to go beyond practical factors, like having someone who helps you out day-to-day. But the study cannot say whether a close emotional relationship, itself, affects women’s survival odds. And a researcher not involved in the work cautioned against making too much of the findings. It is “strictly a correlational study”, said James C. Coyne, director of the behavioral oncology programme at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
Early prostate cancer rate drop THE rate of early prostate cancers among older Americans dropped suddenly following a change in screening advice from government-backed experts in 2008, new research shows. The findings are another sign that the tide could be turning against routine prostate cancer screening, which a growing number of medical groups worry could do more harm than good. In August, 2008, the US Preventive Services Task Force began discouraging screening in men over 75 given the known risks of screening and lack of clear benefits. (The group recently expanded its recommendation to men of all ages.) A survey published earlier this year found no decrease in screening. But that work was based on screening tests reported by patients and could be unreliable, said David H. Howard, a health policy researcher at Emory University in Atlanta, who did the new study. Using a national cancer registry, he found the rate of earlystage prostate tumour diagnoses among men aged 75 and older fell 25 per cent from 2007 to 2009.
Late night TV, computer time linked to depression Exposure to artificial light at night results in depressionlike traits By Chris Wickham SITTING in front of a computer or TV screen late into the night or leaving it on when you fall asleep could increase your chances of becoming depressed, according to a study by U.S. scientists. The study, by a team of neuroscientists at Ohio State University Medical Centre partly funded by the US Department of Defence, will give screen-addicted night owls pause for thought. The researchers - who exposed hamsters to dim light at night and picked up changes in behaviour and the brain that bore striking similarities to symptoms in depressed people - said a surge in exposure to artificial light at night in the last 50 years had coincided with rising rates of depression, particularly among women, who are twice as prone as men. “The results we found in hamsters are consistent with what we know about depres-
Although exposure to night-time light has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and obesity, the relationship with mood disorders is poorly understood sion in humans,” said Tracy Bedrosian, who led the study, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. Although exposure to nighttime light has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and obesity, the relationship with mood disorders
is poorly understood. The hamsters involved in the experiment were exposed for four weeks to dim light at night - equivalent to a TV screen in a darkened room and the results compared to a control group exposed to a normal light-dark cycle.
The experimental group was then moved back onto a normal cycle for one, two or four weeks before they were tested. The results showed they were less active and had a lower than usual interest in drinking sugar water - both
symptoms are comparable to signs of depression in people. The similarity extended to their biological makeup. The researchers found changes in the hippocampus - a part of the brain - that were consistent with people suffering depression. The hamsters exposed to dim light at night were also shown to produce more of a protein called tumour necrosis factor (TNF), a chemical messenger that is mobilised when the body is injured or infected and causes inflammation in its efforts to repair the damage. “Researchers have found a strong association in people between chronic inflammation and depression,” said Randy Nelson, who also worked on the study. “That’s why it is very significant that we found this relationship between dim light at night and increased expression of TNF.” The scientists found that blocking the effects of TNF with a drug prevented signs of depression in the hamsters, though some other indicators in the structure of the brain were unaffected. For instance, hamsters that were exposed to dim light at night still showed a much reduced density of dendritic spines - hairlike growths on brain cells that are used to send chemical messages from one cell to another. Nonetheless, those hamsters returned to a normal light-dark cycle saw both their TNF levels and the density of their dendritic spines return to normal after about two weeks.
Hip and knee replacements tied to risk of heart attack - study OLDER patients who have a hip or knee replaced face an increased risk of heart attack in the two weeks after the procedure, according to an international study. Researchers, whose findings appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine, said that people having joint surgery had up to 31 times the
risk of a heart attack shortly afterward. “The risk of acute myocardial infarction is substantially increased in the first 2 weeks after total hip replacement (25-fold) and total knee replacement surgery (31-fold) compared with controls,” wrote Arief Lalmohamed from Utrecht University in
the Netherlands, who led the study. The link between joint surgeries and heart problems was especially high for patients aged 80 or older, they found. But those under the age of 60 weren’t at any higher risk. Although it’s not clear that the hip and knee procedures themselves triggered the heart attacks, research-
ers said it’s reasonable to think they would have some role. “Surgery is a risk, because surgery and anesthesia that you need to have the surgery increase stress levels for patients,” said William Hozack, an orthopedic surgeon at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, who wasn’t involved in the study.
Hope for new drug cocktail to combat TB A NEW combination of three drugs killed 99 per cent of patients’ tuberculosis bacteria in two weeks, raising hope for a new weapon against increasingly resistant forms of TB. The midstage study, presented on Monday at the International AIDS Conference in Washington, needs to be confirmed in larger and longer trials. Scientists say the drug cocktail could speed treatment and help reduce the emergence of resistant forms of tuberculosis. “TB is the largest killer of AIDS patients, and so in order to contain the AIDS epidemic, we have to contain TB to a much greater extent,” said Dr Mel Spiegelman, chief executive officer of the TB Alliance, a non-profit research group that conducted the study, which was published in the Lancet. The combination of drugs includes one existing TB drug, pyrazinamide, a repurposed antibiotic from Bayer AG called moxifloxcin that is now used off-label for patients with drug-restistant TB, and a new drug called PA-824 being developed by the New York-based TB Alliance. What the combination lacks are any drugs in the class called rifamycins, which pose the greatest threat of side effects for patients who also are being treated for infections with HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDs. “The results of this clinical trial give us the first indication that a new TB drug regimen - a combination of drugs - could be more effective than any of the existing TB drug regimens,” Spiegelman said. He said the combination is especially promising because it could be used to treat patients with both treatmentsensitive TB and TB strains that are resistant to two or more of the common drugs, known as multiple-drug resistant TB.

Do-It-Yourself trend ACROSS the globe, D.I.Y., or Do-It-Yourself, has become a way of life. Small collectives of individuals are putting together communities with the D.I.Y. mentality that believes in being the creators of culture rather than consumers. These communities seek to provide an alternative to the mainstream, corporate, societal norms found in every day life. From alternative dance spaces to underground music venues, the D.I.Y. ethics has permeated every aspect of life. While such D.I.Y. activities have been around for many years, it has only been in recent times that they have begun to receive mainstream acceptance in many parts of the world and now Cyprus. The Cypriot music world is no stranger to grassroots innovation, and the Xorko Collaborative movement – run for artists, by artists – is a prime example of how collective artistic passion and support lie at the heart of the island’s cultural scene. Starting today, Arminou village will be the host of the first festival of Xorko Art Collaboration Movement. Made up of mainly local Cypriot artists, musicians and DJs, Xorko (Cypriot for village) is an apt name for this movement as it acts as a communal platform for social and independent business development and artistic/ cultural production, for social entrepreneurs and underground entities to exist and grow. One of the biggest problems that local musicians have faced is the lack of different music scenes.
Above Barbara’s Straight Son (Greece). Inset: Vacation Dad (USA)
Music tends to be very commercial and a poor art education system further hinders musical expression. Xorko, however, seeks to address this issue by focusing on the newest genres, influential electronic music from all over the world and experimental constructions. All the action is set to take place in Arminou village in the Dhiarizos valley. With its unique setting, Arminou is 50km east from Paphos, on the outskirts of the Paphos forest yet twenty minutes away from the sea. Formerly the administrative and cultural centre of this fertile and historic region of Cyprus, Arminou is now inhabited by just 23 people. Over tthree days, the Xorko festival will take audiences on festiva musical journey from folk to a mus drum & bass to experimenlive dr electronic and dark techno. tal ele area, shower and A camping cam cleaning facilities, as well as cleani lunch, dinner and a breakfast, brea drinks bar will be available. It’s noting that you can also worth w partake in hiking and biking partak activities over the course of the activit three days. French music producer and Frenc DJ of nu garage and future Jambon will open dub Fabrice F festival followed by the the fe experimental electronic ex duo vybbtuan & Yiand nis Christofides. Electro acoustic live improvisatitions by Governmental Envelopes will continue the En journey and the night will end journe with a dark electronic mood Shalom & Raw Silver playwith S
ing a set going from electronic punk to chiptune. Tomorrow will start early with chill wave music slowly waking up crowds from slumber, while Monsieur Doumani will take their flutes out and recreate Cypriot folk songs, which will then be followed by an earthy DJ set by DJ Antonis-Renos AKA the Mule as the sun begins to set. Night time will then see four young music composers step into the limelight that have came together to form the Brain Masturbation band. The Black Post Project will enhance the scene with the first dark beats of the night, as audiences then prepare to be swept away by the American electronic rock producer Vacation Dad. Things will then all draw to a close on Sunday with Kineza & Kristia E. taking over the first hour with their live sonic forays followed by Meskalido’s Balcan, an experimental dub playlist. The closing set will then be handed over to the man who has been leading the revival of Cypriot vernacular music, Michalis Terlikkas. DIY is nothing without local support so come down and show some. NEW FILMS The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight Rises
Directed by: Christopher Nolan Starring: Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt US 2012, 164 mins. Showing from today at the K-Cineplex and K-Cineplex (Mall of Cyprus) in Nicosia, the Rio and K-Cineplex in Limassol, the K-Cineplex in Larnaca and the Rio in Paphos.
THE PLOT
Le Mepris (Contempt) Paul Javal (Michel Piccoli) is a writer who’s who s hired by producer Jeremy Prokosch (Jack Palance) to make a script for a film version of ‘The Odyssey’ more commercial. Paul leaves his wife Camille (Brigitte Bardot) alone on a drive with Prokosch – and she, believing he’s used her to ingratiate himself with the producer, suddenly feels contempt for him, putting the relationship in danger. Directed by JeanLuc Godard in 1963. In French, with Greek subtitles. (Drama, 103 mins.) Our rating:
It’s been eight years since Batman (Christian Bale) vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anticrime Dent Act – but everything will change with the arrival of Selina (Anne Hathaway), a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, g , however,, is the emergence of Bane (Tom Hardy), a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce Wayne out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane .
WHAT THE CRITICS SAID Pro: “The Dark Knight Rises (TDKR), Christopher Nolan’s mesmerising climax to his trilogy reboot of the DC Comics character, is a show, all right. But not in the way of the standard summer action fantasy. Although his movie contains elaborate fights, stunts, chases and war toys, and though the director dresses half his characters in outfits suitable for a ComicCon revel, Nolan is a dead-serious artist with a worldview many m ny shades darker than the ma knight k ight of the title. kn The Avengers is kid stuff compared with this meditation on mortal loss and heroic frailty. For once a melodrama with pulp origins
The Dark Knight Rises
convinces viewers that it can be the modern equivalent to Greek myths or a Jonathan Swift satire. TDKR is that big, that bitter – a film of grand ambitions and epic achievement. The most eagerly anticipated movie of summer 2012 was worth waiting for… “Occasionally the movie’s pulp and fantasy origins expose themselves. The opening set piece, in which Bane and his cohorts are rescued from captivity in a CIA plane by hitching a ride on a larger jet flying above it, is the kind that was more suavely imagined in several James Bond films decades ago. (Bane, through his apparatus, often sounds like a 007 villain; you wait for him to say, ‘No, Mr. Wayne, I expect you to die’.) You may also wonder why Bruce took ages to learn, even from Alfred, that his business empire is near depletion; why no Gothamite, police or civilian, thinks to shoot Bane in the leg or apply a kung fu kick to his respirator; why, in a street fight between Batman and Bane, none of the thousands of allies or adversaries joins in to take one or both of the men down; and why the thin frozen ice, on which condemned men in wintry Gotham are meant to fall through, miraculously refreezes for the next group of victims… “More often, though, the movie’s emotional gravity gives special heft to venerable Batman tropes. When, after all these years, the Bat-
Signal illuminates the sky (Bruce has draped an unconscious villain on a searchlight to form the famous silhouette), it’s seriously thrilling, because so much more is at stake here… “Nolan has said he was inspired by Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities; he borrowed the novel’s setting in a time of revolution, its use of a storm motif and its proliferation of characters who are the doubles or mirror images of each other. (Bane, who literally went to the same school as Bruce, might be Batman’s evil twin.) At the end, Alfred reads the last lines from A Tale of Two Cities: ‘It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better place that I go to than I have ever known’. “That could be a summing up of Nolan’s Bruce/Batman, and of The Dark Knight Rises. The movie may not top The Avengers at the worldwide box office, but it is a far, far better thing – maybe the best, most troubling, assured and enthralling of all the superhero movies.” Richard Corliss, TIME (US) Pro/Mixed: “Old superheroes never die; they simply hang up their capes and retreat to the shadows, awaiting the moment when fashions change and they’re required again. One minute Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is hobbling around his country pile, leaning on his stick like a latter-day Howard Hughes and woefully pro-
claiming that ‘there’s nothing out there for me’. The next he’s back in the bat-suit, back in the saddle – recalled to save the world or Warner Bros, whatever comes first. “Preamble complete, the dark knight duly rises for the bruising final stanza in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, a satisfying saga of revolution and redemption that ends the tale on a note of thunder. If viewers were wanting a corrective to the jumpsuit antics of The Avengers, or the noodling highschool angst of The Amazing Spider-Man, then rest assured that Batman delivers in spades. Here is a film of granite, monolithic intensity; a superhero romp so serious that it borders on the comical, like a children’s fancy-dress party scripted by Victor Hugo and scored by Wagner… “The Dark Knight Rises may be a hammy, portentous affair but Nolan directs it with aplomb. He takes these codheroic, costumed elements and whisks them into a tale of heavy-metal fury, full of pain and toil, surging uphill, across the flyovers, in search of a climax. ‘I’m still a believer in the Batman,’ murmurs Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s rookie cop at one point. Arm-twisted, senses reeling, I am forced to concede that I am too.” Xan Brooks, The Guardian (UK) Mixed: “Eight years after the camp
frippery of Batman & Robin (1997), in which Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy played dress-up while George Clooney let his nipply bat-suit do most of the acting, director and co-writer Christopher Nolan brought to the screen the origin story of Bruce Wayne and his tortured, emotionally isolated crimefighting alter ego. Stately and just serious enough, Batman Begins was trumped by Nolan’s own 2008 sequel The Dark Knight, which channelled a planet’s worth of post-9/11 panic and pitted Christian Bale’s masked vigilante against Heath Ledger’s unforgettable merry psycho… “Now comes The Dark Knight Rises, which makes The Dark Knight look like Dora the Explorer and is more of a 164-minute anxiety disorder than a movie… “Nolan’s third in the planned trilogy will likely satisfy many who fell headlong into the previous two. The new film works on your nervous system the way composer Hans Zimmer’s kettle drums of doom keeps tightening the screws, long after the screws are tight. There are many things to admire in The Dark Knight Rises, and Nolan’s bombast is a far, far higher grade than you’d find in a Transformers movie. But … what worked beautifully in The Dark Knight seems overworked and almost ridiculously grim in The Dark Knight Rises.” Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune (US)

Television PICK OF THE DAY Olympic Games: Opening Ceremony (CyBC2, 23.00) Can we stop with the politics already? US presidential candidate Mitt Romney questions the UK’s readiness to host the Olympic Games and claims that preparations so far have been “disconcerting”. David Cameron responds that “Britain can deliver”, and refrains from adding that the nation’s Olympic planning is none of Romney’s damn business anyway. North Korean athletes walk out in a huff after the South Korean flag is shown next to their photos and David Cameron, again, retorts that the blunder was “an honest mistake, honestly made” (doesn’t he have any work to do?). Meanwhile, in Greece, a triple jumper tweets a joke about African immigrants and gets chucked out for racism and being “contrary to the values of the Olympic movement”. You’d think extreme nationalism might actually be an asset in the Olympics, considering they involve athletes from one country competing against athletes from other countries - but of course politicians would rather forget it’s a sporting contest and pretend it’s some wonderful multicultural get-together where people from all over the world sing songs and swap recipes. Maybe that’s why the Opening Ceremony is always such a big deal - because for the fi rst and last time (well, there’s the Closing Ceremony, but ev-
eryone’s kind of burned out by then), the Olympic Idea can take centre-stage, unencumbered by the pesky reality of actual sports. Watching delegations from all over the world parade, one by one, does make you feel like the world is briefl y in harmony, all the more so since the athletes appear in a wide array of national team colours. ‘Unity in diversity,’ as the EU like to put it. The parade is only part of it, of course. There’s also the ‘artistic programme’ which has become increasingly important in recent years, with each host nation vying to outdo the previous one (politics again). The precise content of tonight’s show is a closely-guarded secret, and artistic director Danny Boyle has already apologised to volunteers over ‘spoilers’ appearing in British papers, so we won’t give away too many details - but Boyle himself has revealed that the ceremony will include “a recreation of the British countryside featuring country scenes and farmyard animals,” which sounds cute if not particularly exciting. The title of the programme is ‘The Isles of Wonder’ - ‘Isles’ as in ‘British Isles’, ‘Wonder’ as in ‘I wonder how much this is costing the taxpayer in a time of recession’, though of course we shouldn’t be cynical. You don’t get the sports without the politics.

Saturday Night Fever (CyBC2, 21.00) Remember in Pulp Fiction when John Travolta got up to dance with Uma Thurman, and all he really did was shake his fleshy 40-year-old body slightly - yet the scene still worked because ... well, because he was John Travolta, Icon of Dance? Here’s the fi lm that made him iconic, the ultimate disco movie, and you’d think it’s just nostalgia nowadays but in fact it holds up well, especially the ethnic-Italian gang stuff which bears comparison to Mean Streets. Travolta works a day-job, lives with his parents - and lives for the weekend, when he turns into a strutting peacock with puppy-dog eyes as he and his mates burn up the dance-floor at the local disco. Karen Lynn Gorney (whose performance is awful, but fits her obnoxious character) is the older woman he fancies - and the soundtrack, mostly by the Bee Gees and including the likes of ‘Staying Alive’, is another reason why the fi lm remains timeless. Made in 1977.
Insidious (LTV, 21.00) An ordinary family with three young kids move into a new house - and, almost immediately, strange things start happening. Books are found on the floor, though no-one recalls having dropped them. The baby cries for no reason. Doors creak open, and mysterious rumblings are heard. “There’s something wrong with this place,” Mum (Rose Byrne) tells Dad (Patrick Wilson); “It’s like a sickness”. It wouldn’t be fair to reveal what happens next in this creepy ghost story - but suffice to say that the fi nal act goes off in a fantastical direction that some will fi nd imaginative (think David Lynch) and others deeply silly. “There were several points during the fi lm where I screamed like a 13-year old girl at a Justin Beiber concert,” admits a fan called Chad at the Internet Movie Database - but in fact you could fi nd it entirely nonscary and still enjoy its slow-burning creepiness. Note the title is ‘Insidious’, not ‘Terrifying’. Made in 2010.
Blonde and Blonder (Capital TV, 21.00) There are better fi lms on TV tonight (like, for instance, all of them) - but it’s too hot to think, and the dynamic duo of Pamela Anderson and Denise Richards make thinking superfluous. They’re a pair of dim-witted bimbos (can we say ‘typecasting’?) who somehow get mistaken for hired assassins by a gangster and dispatched on a deadly mission to kill the head of the Chinese underworld. “What are we listening to?” asks Denise at one point. “The Sound of Music,” replies Pam. “Oh cool ... what’s the music called?” ripostes her soulmate. Ladies and gentlemen, I rest my case! A good night for vapid models on Capital TV, with the admittedly less vapid Claudia Schiffer coming up later. Made in 2007.

ARIES March 21 - April 20
LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
You seem to be busy with all kinds of projects, bringing you the variety you probably crave. This opportunity to have fingers in so many pies makes you feel more alive than ever and can ward off boredom. The good news is that your finances can also revive, as long as you are willing to promote yourself and your knowledge and skills on a daily basis.
There is plenty of positive activity being initiated by you and around you, which means you are making all the right connections and benefiting from the associations you currently foster. Both business and romance are well starred. However, as Mercury is still retrograde, you may need patience with some people or projects. In time all will be revealed.
Mercury still rewinds, but not for much longer. You might experience delays just when you are keen to get ahead. But timing is also important. This phase may seem to hold you back, when in reality you may be being encouraged to be patient until the best solution naturally evolves at the right time, bringing you, potentially an even better outcome.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
With a focus on your home zone, you may want to invest some of your money in making your home a better and brighter place. Depending on how much cash you want to splash, there are options for planning something like a conservatory or redecoration. However, you may be happy to just do your research and carefully weigh up the possibilities.
You may be waiting for something and uncertain what you can do to hurry matters up. As Mercury is still retrograde, you might even feel a sense of helplessness as though it’s up to fate to decide what will happen next. However, there is one thing you can do and that is to think positively about the result that you “do” want. That way, it just might happen.
You seem to be mainly consumed by work and general busyness, but the Moon in your social zone may encourage you to relax and have some down time. Even a drink and a chat could leave you feeling in much better spirits. When it comes to employment prospects, a stroke of fortune is possible. If you feel restless, this might be the time to take the plunge.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
Mercury in your communication zone, makes you even wittier, wiser and on the ball - which could be just what’s needed to resolve one key issue. Meanwhile, the Moon in Scorpio can stir your desire to look into health and wellness issues. With all this marvellous mental energy buzzing around, it is important not to neglect what you eat and drink.
You may feel like a fresh start and be thinking of a makeover. The Cosmos seems to be encouraging you to make a few changes to your appearance and also to the way you present yourself to the world. It’s time to move out of your comfort zone and experiment with what is possible. Aim high and you may be surprised at what you can achieve.
You are certainly a people person, and this is more than obvious at this time, as the current influences are working on your behalf to bring you plenty of hot connections that could impact your life in a very positive and upbeat way. The more you are willing to explore your potential and see where it takes you, the more options for amazing success can open up.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
The Moon in Scorpio brings an opportunity for love and romance, if you feel in the mood. You may not want to make a big effort, but if the opportunity presents itself, you could end up having a great time. Your intuition is still very strong, so tune in daily and get a feel for what might be the best direction for you to take in every aspect of your life.
The Moon is currently moving through your sign, so you may get a dose of extra good vibes. If you have had trouble getting something you want, you may be lucky if you go ahead and ask for it again. Money wise, you could be attracting extra funds from a variety of sources and a windfall is very much a possibility at this time. Fingers crossed!
You seem to be looking at your lifestyle and how well it functions. With Mercury retrograde ongoing, your partner or loved one may be keen to point out where things are going wrong and how they can be put right. Reflect on your daily life and you will get an idea of what needs to be changed or eradicated. This may not seem sexy, but it can prove worthwhile.

CYPRUS MAIL Friday, July 27, 2012
Sport Capello confirmed as Russia’s new coach FABIO Capello has been appointed as Russia’s new coach yesterday. There had been much speculation the former England boss was among the favourites for the vacant job and a Russian Football Union spokesman confirmed to Press Association Sport that he has signed a two-year deal. The Italian succeeds Dick Advocaat, who took charge of Eredivisie outfit PSV Eindhoven after Russia were eliminated in the group stages of Euro 2012. Capello, who resigned as England manager in February, was earlier this month on a shortlist of 13 candidates for the job, with Harry Redknapp and former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola also mentioned by the RFU. But speculation had grown since the 66-year-old was their man and he was set to complete the formalities yesterday afternoon. The RFU will be hoping Capello will prosper after Russia started promisingly at the European Championship, by beating Czech Republic 4-1, before being eliminated after a draw with co-hosts Poland and a defeat to Greece. Similarly, Capello will be looking to rebuild his reputation after a less than impressive four years with England. After taking charge in 2008, he was initially a great success after England comfortably qualified for the 2010 World Cup but the tournament ultimately ended with a crushing 4-1 defeat by rivals Germany in the second round. The former AC Milan, Roma and Real Madrid boss guided England into this year’s tournament in Poland and Ukraine, but quit his post in acrimonious circumstances after the Football Association stripped John Terry of the captaincy due to the Chelsea defender being charged with making a racist remark to Anton Ferdinand. Terry was subsequently cleared in a magistrates court trial.
Still gunning for Arsenal: so far, with City unable to off-load any of their unwanted high earners, there have been no signings, with Arsenal snubbing an initial approach for Van Persie
Europa progress for Anorthosis and APOEL By Nemanja Bjedov
Mancini hits out at lack of City signings By Simon Stone MANCHESTER City manager Roberto Mancini has shoved the responsibility for the lack of new faces at the Etihad Stadium this summer on the Citizens’ football director Brian Marwood. City are keen to sign Robin van Persie, with Mancini believing it is crucial to strengthen in order to defend their Premier League title. So far though, with City unable to off-load any of their unwanted high earners, there have been no signings, with Arsenal snubbing an initial approach for Van Persie. And, ahead of the Blues’ friendly with Arsenal in Beijing today, Mancini, while not mentioning Marwood by name, made it clear where he feels the responsibility lies.
Places the responsibility on football director Marwood “For this question, speak to the man in charge,” Mancini told reporters at a press conference in the Chinese capital. “I am not in charge of this. “It is important (to get players quickly) because, after what we did last year, we must continue to win. “This year will be harder than last, so we need to improve our team. “We have a man who works for this and we hope that they can do a good job.” Mancini has previously made his admiration for Van Persie well known. However, aware he will be
facing Arsene Wenger today, the Italian opted to tread a delicate path. “Van Persie is an Arsenal player, not our player,” he said. “He is a fantastic player, but we have four strikers and with those strikers we won the title last year. “Van Persie is a fantastic player, but he is an Arsenal player.” Meanwhile, skipper Vincent Kompany has signed a massive six-year contract that could net him £60million at an estimated £200,000-a-week. “We have laid the foundations and now we want to win
more,” the Belgian told www. mcfc.co.uk. “If we do that then we can be one of the most successful clubs for a long time to come. That is the aim.” Given the vast changes that have taken place since Sheikh Mansour completed his buyout in 2008, Kompany finds himself as one of the longestserving members of Mancini’s squad. Former boss Mark Hughes spent what is now viewed as a bargain £6million for Kompany in August 2008, since which time he has become one of Europe’s best defenders. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year in 2011 and won the City Player of the Year award last term, in addition to scoring the crucial goal against Manchester United in April that turned the championship battle their way.
ANORTHOSIS and APOEL progressed into the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League after 6-1 and 3-0 aggregate victories over FC Levadia Tallinn and FK Senica respectively. Ronny Levy’s men had a 3-1 lead from the first leg and had no difficulties seeing off Estonian representatives 3-0 at Larnaca’s Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium yesterday evening. Toni Calvo opened proceedings after only 13 minutes when he ran down the right flank and tried to find Giannis Okkas on the second post. While his pass was way ahead of Okkas, the experienced striker still managed to flick it past Roman Smishko and the Spaniard tapped the ball into an empty net. Okkas thereafter netted to make it 2-0 four minutes before the interval. Colombian midfielder Ricardo Laborde set up the final score in the 62nd minute, placing the ball in the net after Smishko initially saved Juliano Spadacio’s effort. APOEL had a somewhat more complicated job in Slovakia, but they eventually prevailed 1-0 as Helio Pinto scored the winner 17 minutes from time. Ivan Jovanovic’s team had a 2-0 advantage after the first leg in Nicosia last week, and their outstanding game plan won them another victory against the solid Slovakian outfit. In the third qualifying round Anorthosis will take on Georgian side FC Dalia Gori, who overcame AGF Aarhus of Denmark 5-2 on aggregate in their second round encounter, while APOEL face Norwegian team Aalesunds FK, who dismantled KF Tirana of Albania 5-0 in the second leg to secure a 6-1 aggregate win. The first legs are set for next Thursday with Anorthosis travelling to Georgia, while APOEL host Aalesunds at the GSP Stadium in the Cypriot capital.
Goalless tie sufficient for AEL to progress to third round By Nemanja Bjedov
Edmar (left) in action against Linfield for AEL
AEL manager’s expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance in a goalless draw against Northern Irish Linfield FC at Belfast’s Windsor Park, after the Limassol team advanced into the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 aggregate win. “It was a difficult game tonight as we had expected. We were playing an opponent who had nothing to lose after the first game in Cyprus,” said Pambos Christodoulou. “We tried to keep possession of the ball and had a number of chances in either half. Linfield had only few chances and did not really threaten us. “We succeeded in what we came here to do and have progressed to the next
round against Partizan Belgrade. We have shown that we are a difficult team to beat and the aim now is to try and progress as far as possible in this competition.” Linfield’s manager David Jeffrey was in positive mood after watching his side not conceding against the Cypriot champions. “AEL made four changes for tonight’s game, but you could see they were a top quality side. They prepared thoroughly for this game and I have every respect for them. We changed our shape a little bit tonight and went for a 3-5-2 formation,” he said. “I ... have got to mention the performance of William Murphy which was highly significant. He came back from holiday and ticked all the boxes in terms of our tests and I felt we needed someone at
the back who naturally attacks the ball. David Armstrong and Stephen Douglas helped him out tremendously but I thought William was quite magnificent. “That’s three clean sheets in Europe this season and it’s not a bad return,” concluded Jeffrey. AEL will now take on Serbian champions FK Partizan Belgrade, with the first game scheduled for next Wednesday in Cyprus. Partizan’s manager Vladimir Vermezovic took the Cypriot side very seriously, noting: “We have many people who can give us information about the Cypriot team and we’ll try to have a complete picture until the first match. What we know so far is that it is a very physical team, with many creative players and that they are very dangerous from set pieces.”

Olympic Games
Moynihan unhappy with Blatter comments on Bale BRITISH Olympic Association chairman Lord Moynihan yesterday criticised Sepp Blatter for suggesting Gareth Bale could be banned from playing for Tottenham during London 2012. Moynihan claimed he could “understand” the anger of Great Britain fans who saw Bale pull out of the Games with a back injury only for the winger to take part in a pre-season friendly for Spurs on Wednesday. Moynihan said: “I understand the response from some football fans who were hoping to see him play as part of Team GB. “My view is different. “I welcome the fact that, actually, he has returned from injury earlier than anticipated.” FIFA president Blatter said on Wednesday Bale could be banned from playing during the Games if an official complaint was made, but Moynihan added: “I don’t agree with Sepp Blatter’s comments about looking at ban-
ning him during the Games. “I think Sepp Blatter needs to get a bit closer to Team GB and maybe join me on the Jubilee Line early in the morning. I didn’t notice him there this morning. “It would’ve been helpful, because I could’ve explained the situation to him very clearly.”
ROONEY COMPARISON The situation with Bale was compared yesterday to that which saw Wayne Rooney named in England’s European Championship squad despite being suspended for two matches. BOA chef de mission Andy Hunt claimed Team GB head coach Stuart Pearce was happy with his squad. “Stuart made that selection based on fitness and form at the time,” he said. “You can’t ever predict the recovery period from an injury. “Gareth, in some ways, is missing an amazing opportunity, which I’m sure
- reflecting - he might be disappointed about because he wasn’t fit at the time. “You’ve seen the comments back from the players. Their eyes have been truly opened about Olympic football and the significance of competing in this game.” Hunt was pressed on why the BOA had demanded the medical records of injured triple-jumper Phillips Idowu and not those of Bale. “There’s a very simple difference,” Hunt said. “Phillips is selected for the team. Gareth wasn’t selected for the team at that point in time. “Phillips is part of our delegation. We have responsibility for Phillips.” He added: “We leave the selection down to the sports. “It’s not for me to interfere with the selection process.” Britain’s men were to kick-off a day after their female counterparts got the Olympic hosts off to a successful start against New Zealand.

Madrid Olympics bid to go ahead despite euro crisis
ATHLETES en route to the Olympics may end up sharing their special Games Lanes with funeral carriages drawn by plumed horses draped in black velvet. Funeral directors exasperated by Olympic traffic rules that threaten to delay burial processions suggested they could commandeer the lanes reserved for athletes and officials. Some have had to draw up contracts with grieving families to make clear the possibility of severe delays. “If we went down the Olympic lanes in a horse-drawn, what are they going to do photograph a horse? Fingerprinting?” said John Cribb, director of T. Cribb and Sons, a funeral director partnership run by the same family in east London since 1881. Traditional east London funerals echo the elaborate customs of the Victorian era, when the coffin, laden with flowers, was placed in a glasssided carriage and drawn ceremoniously through the streets by black horses. Funeral organisers have had to make emergency plans to cope with the road closures and traffic light changes imposed as part of the special Olympic Route Network. When the strict plans were first proposed, funeral directors reacted with disbelief, Cribb said. “That’s when I said...perhaps we can advise people in (the east London neighbourhoods of) Newham and Tower Hamlets not to die while the Olympics is on,” he recalled.
Spanish capital desperate for 2020 Games By Jonathan Veal SPAIN’S Secretary of State for Sport Miguel Cardenal insists Madrid is right to go ahead with its bid for the 2020 Olympic Games despite the eurozone crisis. The south-western European country has been hit hard by debts, with talk of them requiring a bail-out, and although Rome has pulled out of the running due to the financial situation, the Spanish capital is desperate to land the Games. It has been a Candidate City for the 2012 and 2016 Games, won by London and Rio respectively, and with much of the investment in the bid already received, Cardenal is unconcerned. “The analysis that we have from the Spanish government is that the Olympic Games are not merely something that will give a boost to the Spanish economy but they also provide us with a huge opportunity,” Cardenal said. “We have experience of the Barcelona Olympic Games
Spain Secretary of State for Sport Cardenal said his country already had the requisite experience for the bid, having successfully put on the Barcelona Games in 1992 and in economic terms its resolve was indisputable. Four-fifths of our necessary investment for our bid has already been achieved, so we are not talking about a huge
scale of new investment. “The Spanish state is calling for its citizens to tighten their belts and accept the need for a degree of sacrifice and the measures are cer-
tainly painful. “But we are pursuing this project because there are economic studies that identify the investment already made, the investment still
to be made and the yield on those investments in terms of employment will boost the economy. “The bid wishes to be smart and reasonable looking at sustainability and we shall only have expenditure that’s absolutely necessary and will make financial dividends. “Let’s not forget the Games we are bidding for is in 2020. Eight years is a very long time in terms of economic developments and we certainly hope the economic situation in Spain in eight years time will be a lot better than now. “There will be no additional investment between now and the final decision of the bid in September 2013 apart from those that are supported by the private sector rather than the public.” President of the Spanish Olympic Committee Alejandro Blanco, who is also serving as the president of the 2020 bidding committee, added: “Madrid is different because the bulk of the investment has already been made. “The investment that is called for if we are successful is less than the return we will get on the Games. “All of the investment made by Spain will be affected if we don’t get the Games, but the amount we would need for further infrastructure is quite minor in relation to the investment already made. We have private sector funding ready to be made if we are successful.”
Greece’s far right Golden Dawn party rails against triple jumper Papachristou’s ban GREECE’S far-right Golden Dawn party condemned yesterday the withdrawal of an athlete from the London Olympics for an anti-African tweet, saying it reflected “racism against Greeks”. Triple jumper Paraskevi Papachristou was taken off the Greek
Olympic team on Wednesday after causing an uproar at home with a tweet about West Nile virus and the number of Africans in Greece that was deemed as racist. Golden Dawn, who rode on a wave of anti-immigrant sentiment in austerity-hurt Greece to surprisingly
win seats in the country’s parliament last month, objected to her withdrawal. “The only racism in Greece is the racism against the Greeks,” Golden Dawn said on its website that also featured a photograph showing Papachristou waving a huge
Greek flag. “Anybody who says even a word against illegal immigrants is held up to public ridicule,” the party added. “It would be more honest to pass a law condemning everybody who has different views to death by stoning.”
Several other smaller parties and politicians also criticised the Olympic team’s decision, saying it was excessive. “I believe it was exaggerated to expel Papachristou, especially after she apologised,” tweeted Adonis Georgiadis, a conservative MP.

Aussies bullish over Robertson Games gamble UK, Australian wager over most golds to come down to wins in just a few events By Matt Somerford HUGH Robertson, UK Minister for Sport and the Olympics, faces the prospect of wearing an Australian shirt and playing hockey in central London after the Games following a bet with his counterpart from Down Under. Australia’s Sports Minister, Senator Kate Lundy, yesterday morning revealed details of the now traditional Olympic bet between Great Britain and their Antipodean rivals over who will win the most gold medals in the next fortnight. Pre-Olympic predictions have indicated Team GB are set to stand atop the podium more often, however talk in the Australian camp is of spoiling the home party. Former rower Lundy, who will complete a length of the Eton Dorney course should Australia come up short, and chef de mission Nick Green believe the Australian team can do just that by beating Great Britain in events the hosts are expected to win. Mark Cavendish is hotlytipped to kick off the home gold-medal haul in tomorrow’s men’s Road Race, but the Australians believe their all-Tour de France team that includes last year’s winner Cadel Evans, Matt Goss and
Team Sky’s Mark Rodgers can upset the odds. And with Australia also set to send out strong teams in the track cycling, rowing and sailing - events Team GB have targeted - they have thrown down the gauntlet a day out from the opening ceremony. “It’s a traditional rivalry of course, back in Sydney when we were the host team we took great pride in getting ahead of the UK. It’s exactly the same here,” Senator Lundy said. “We’ve got a traditional wager on where we will finish on the medal tally. It’s a gold-medal bet.
‘OPTIMISTIC’ “Both the UK Sports Minister Hugh Robertson and I play a bit of sport. If we come out on top with the gold medals then he is going to don a Kookaburras (Australia men’s hockey) shirt, a hockey stick and dribble a ball around Australia House in the centre of London. “If the result is the other way then I think I have to wear a Stella McCartney Union Jack t-shirt and row a length of the Dorney Olympic rowing course. We’ll see what happens. “I’m quite optimistic about it. It’s all in good humour of course.” Despite her tough talking
Lundy, 45, did admit the Australians faced a difficult task to win her bet. “In 2011 the AOC (Australian Olympic Committee) medal predictions had us level pegging for gold medals at 15 each and I’ve since seen other esteemed organisations give their own predictions,” she said. “I think we’re going to have to dig really deep to beat the UK in the top five and the medal count. “The home-team advantage I think is strong, I think you can feel it in the air in this place. I think we can do it. “So many of the sports we are up against the UK in are sports that we’re both great at - the margins are the slimmest and so anything can happen on the day.” Great Britain finished fourth ahead of Australia in the medal table in Beijing four years ago, collecting 19 golds compared to 14, although that was the first time since Seoul in 1988 that Team GB had come out on top. Australia had to be content with sixth in China and, after managing fourth in the previous two Olympics, Green believes they will return to the top-five in London. “Top five is our absolute target. We think we’re on target to do that,” he said. “What’s going to unfold
GB’s Mark Cavendish, hotly-tipped to kick off the home gold-medal haul in tomorrow’s men’s Road Race will be among Britain’s arsenal against Australia which will determine how Great Britain or Australia finish on the medal tally is going to come down to a couple of sports where Australia and Great Britain are the respective number one and number two in the world.
“Sailing is one of them, track cycling, rowing is another. The medal tally possibly could go either way as a result of Australia versus Great Britain when they are number one and two in the world.”
SAUDI Arabia’s female judo competitor will fight at the London Olympics “without a hijab”, or Islamic headscarf, the sport’s chief said yesterday. Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani, one of the first two female athletes sent to the Olympics by the conservative Muslim kingdom, is due to compete in the women’s heavyweight tournament next Friday. “She will fight according to the principle and spirit of judo, so without a hijab,” International Judo Federation president Marius Vizer said. The decision is likely to cause controversy in Saudi Arabia, where female participation in sports has long been a controversial issue. Powerful clerics denounce women for exercising, saying it goes against their natural role. A Saudi official had told Reuters earlier this month they expected that the women would have to obey the dress code of Islamic law. He did not elaborate, but other conservative Muslim countries have interpreted this to mean a headscarf, long sleeves and long pants. Shaherkani, who will compete in the 78-kg category in judo, and teenage 800 metre runner Sarah Attar were the first Saudi women allowed to take part in the Olympics after talks between the International Olympic Committee and the country. The decision to allow female Saudi athletes to compete at London was praised by IOC President Jacques Rogge at the time. “This is very positive news and we will be delighted to welcome these two athletes in London in a few weeks time,” Rogge said in a statement in early July.
Thorpe urging Adlington to play it cool Zagunis revealed as US flag-bearer FIVE-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe believes relaxation is key for Rebecca Adlington as the Briton enters London in nigh-on identical circumstances as the Australian found himself in in Sydney 12 years ago. The 29-year-old was the overwhelming favourite for the 200 metres freestyle in his home town in 2000, with the general consensus being a gold medal was a formality. However, Pieter van den Hoogenband showed his hand in the semi-finals when he lowered Thorpe’s world record and the Dutchman then stunned the home crowd when he went on to claim the Olympic title. Adlington now finds herself in the same position, some talking in terms of when she wins gold, not if. Thorpe empathised with the 23-year-old, who will be defending both the 400m and 800m freestyle titles she
Rebecca Adlington will be defending the 400m and 800m freestyle titles she claimed in Beijing claimed in Beijing. He said: “I think it is the hardest thing, the assumption a gold medal is won before a heat has even been swum. “I had to deal with that leading into a home Olympics where people would come up to me and say ‘I can’t wait to
see you win your first Olympic gold’. “It’s like ‘I’m not there, I’m at the supermarket’. “I didn’t know how I was going to respond to it at the Olympic Games. “And Becky also has the pressure on her that she is defending Olympic titles as well which adds another layer of complexity to it going into this Olympics. “So it is difficult for her. “I think from what I’ve seen from the footage of her arriving she looks quite relaxed and she needs to stay relaxed over the next few days.” As well as Adlington, Britain boasts the likes of Fran Halsall, Ellen Gandy and Hannah Miley - all world medallists as well as world open water champion Keri-Anne Payne. However, Thorpe warned that expectation must be tempered by reality given the strength of swimming across the world.
Two-time Olympic champion Maria Zagunis
TWO-time Olympic champion fencer Mariel Zagunis was selected on Wednesday as the flag-bearer to lead the 529-member U.S. team in today’s opening ceremony of the London Games. Zagunis, who became the first American fencer in 100 years to win a gold medal when she triumphed at the 2004 Athens Games, was selected as flag-bearer in a vote by fellow members of the U.S. Olympic team. “As an athlete, I can’t imagine a higher honour than to lead Team USA into the Olympic Games, which are the pinnacle of sport and a platform for world peace,” Zagunis said in a statement released by the United States Olympic Committee. “I am tremendously proud to represent my sport, our team and, most importantly, the United States of America.” The world’s top-ranked women’s sabre fencer defended her Olympic crown at the 2008 Beijing Games and won individual world championship titles in 2009 and 2010. She becomes the third fencer to serve as US flag-bearer and the first since Janice Lee Romary in 1968. Zagunis was chosen over a number of possible high-profile candidates that included Kobe Bryant and LeBron James of the men’s basketball team.

Olympic tennis final could see Wimbledon repeat TOP seed Roger Federer could meet Britain’s Andy Murray in the Olympic tennis final in a repeat of their Wimbledon showdown earlier this month, after the pair were drawn on opposite sides of the competition yesterday. World number one and 17-time grand slam champion Federer, seeking his first Olympic singles medal, will play Colombia’s Alejandro Falla in the opening round. Federer, who beat Murray to secure a record-equalling seventh Wimbledon title, battled back from two sets down to beat Falla in the Wimbledon first round in 2010. Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, seeded two, will take on Italy’s Fabio Fognini, referee Stefan Fransson said, unveiling the draw in a lounge at Wimbledon’s centre court adorned with large photos of London landmarks including Buckingham Palace and the London Eye. Djokovic, who won bronze in Beijing, is
in the same half of the draw as British number one Murray, who he would meet in the semi-finals. Before that, third seed Murray will have to beat Federer’s fellow-Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in his opening match, an announcement which drew a noisy response from a room packed with team leaders, officials and media. Wawrinka, who was out practising on a sun-drenched court three yesterday morning, is carrying the Swiss flag in tonight’s opening ceremony and will have to wait until the schedule of play is released today to find out if he will have to play on the first day of the competition tomorrow. Women’s top seed Belarusian Victoria Azarenka will play Romanian world number 79 Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round, while America’s Serena Williams, fresh from her fifth Wimbledon title, takes on former world number one Jelena Jankovic of Serbia.
Neither of Beijing’s singles gold medallists will be returning to defend their titles, after Spain’s Rafa Nadal was forced to pull out through injury and Russia’s Elena Dementieva retired. But the draw is the strongest ever, with 18 of the world’s top 20 men and 19 of the top 20 women taking part. Top-seeded men’s duo Mike and Bob Bryan, who won bronze in Beijing, will begin their medal campaign by playing Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci and Andre Sa, and could face defending doubles gold medallists Federer and Wawrinka in the quarter-finals. In the women’s doubles, top-seeded American’s Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond get a pass to the second round after the withdrawal of Ukraine’s Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko due to injury. Unseeded defending gold medallists Venus and Serena Williams will take on Romania’s Sorana Cirstea and Simona Halep.

G
reece’s world indoor high jump champion Dimitris Chondrokoukis (inset) withdrew from the London Olympics yesterday after testing positive for the drug Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson used before the 1988 Seoul Games. Johnson was sent home in disgrace after metabolites of the anabolic steroid stanozolol were found in his urine sample following his victory over Carl Lewis in the 100 metres final in world record time. Chondrokoukis’ father and coach Kyriakos said the athlete would seek a retest after a positive test for stanozolol. “I will fight - we will fight to respond and see exactly what happened,” a statement from Kryiakos Chondrokoukis said . Johnson’s fall from grace is still the biggest doping scandal in the history of the Games. After serving a twoyear suspension he returned to competition, but was banned for life after a positive test for excessive levels of the male sex hormone testesterone. Kovago denied doping and said he had provided three samples within a four-day period around the time in question. Another medallist from this year’s world indoor championships, Moroccan 1,500 metres silver medallist Mariem Alaoui, will miss the Games after a positive test for a banned diuretic. On Wednesday the world athletics governing body
also announced that nine track and field athletes had been banned for doping violations. Meanwhile, the fallout from Wednesday’s diplomatic blunder when the North Korean women’s team left the field before their match with Colombia at Glasgow’s Hampden Park because the South Korean flag had been displayed continued with an angry response from North Korea’s Olympic representative Ung Chang. “Of course the people are angry,” International Olympic Committee (IOC) mem-

Earlier, in response to a question from Chang on the final day of the IOC session, president Jacques Rogge said there had been no “political connotation”. “The organising committee has taken corrective action and there will be no repeat. It was a simple human mistake,” he said. Speaking to reporters at the Olympic Park, Cameron said the government’s priority was to ensure a safe and secure Olympics, with more than 9,000 extra police walking the streets and 17,000 troops called in to cover a shortfall left by private security group G4S.
